CRANELOFT constitutes a proposal of the Gau:di Competition on Sustainable Architecture with the subject ‘Urban Loft: Working and Living Space in the densified European city. Expansion of an existing urban building as working and living space (max. 300m²) under the criteria of: • architectural quality, urban impact • energy zero at lowest grey energy level (transport-infrastructure-recycling) • carbon zero • low cost economy’ Aknowlegments to: Zissis Kotionis for his valuable advices and Niovi Zarampouka for the translation of the texts. SCENARIO

URBAN CONTEXT: DATASCAPE

The existing building that is chosen is a port crane. The deindustrialization of the city centers and the recent global financial reality put large areas of the urban tissue that were once facilities, on waiting list for future exploitation. The idea of transforming the crane into a loft (habitation-work), derives from the fact that the already existing facilities are garbage therefore the reuse of objects, structures and engines left behind from the port use are the main design tool, helping the now free area to be incorporated in the urban tissue. The port cranes as structures can be found at all commercial ports worldwide, turning the craneloft into a possible proposal of an alternative habitation with a global character. The exploitation of the natural resources, the use of renewal energy resources and the reuse of the objects of the surrounding area make the craneloft one low-cost, autonomous, self-sufficient infrastructure/structure, serving the contemporary forms of habitation and working in the constantly changing, “condensed European city.

Volos is the capital of the Magnesia prefecture, a coastal port city situated at the center of the Greek mainland, about 326 km north of Athens and 215 km south of Thessaloniki. Its population consists of 120.000 inhabitants and the extent of the urban cluster is 2.770 Ha. The city has a relatively condensed tissue, with blocks of flats reaching up to 6 levels. The pablic transports of the city consist of buses, taxis and cars, while short distances are covered by bicycles, which are also very popular means of transportation. The port of Volos is situated in the city center. In nearby distances, one can find the bus stations (both urban and suburban), the train station and the Polytechnic faculty of the University of Thessaly which serves 2000 students.

CONTROL ROOM

The control room of the automation of the CRANELOFT is placed to the preexistent crane control room. From that point the rotation system of the crane, the container's movement, and the inclination of the photovoltaic panels can be programmed. In addition, this is the point from where the light and water consumption can be controled.

WOODS OF OLD RAILROADS

The woods from old railroads are reused for the main floor. dimensions: 10cm x 25cm x 150cm

Diogenes the Cynic (412 BC-323 BC) was a Greek philosopher who lived in Korinthos. He inhabited an earthenware jar that he use to turn around, achieving accordingly heating and shadowing needs.

STRUCTURE TAGS

CRANE CONTAINER

CRANELOFT΄S extra space and storage extension are achieved by two containers that are connected to each other. The containers are hanging from the crane and when they reach craneloft they attach to the rails of the existing edges. The containers can facilitate two elevations, therefore serving as the expansion of the bedroom in one case and as that of the living room in the other case.
