physical computing soldering through hole soldering - when you have parts that have legs/pins, these legs stick through the circuit board and you have a mechanical connection. that mechanical connection makes it easier to solder. surface mount go on top of the circuit board. parts float and sit on top. no mechanical connection. The distance between the pins can be as half of a millimeter. Very small.

physical computing soldering cold solder joints - when iron doesn’t get hot enough where it doesn’t maintain the temperature, it melts the solder but doesn’t get it through the hole set your soldering iron to 650F if your using lead or set it to 700F if your using lead free solder with .031 diameter solder, solder is hollow on inside and tends to have flux(removes oxidation) flux cleans off any dirt when soldering you should have a wet sponge to wipe the tip of your iron of excess tin the tip of your soldering iron: melt solder over tip of iron till the tip looks silver, use sponge as needed to wipe excess off @ 2013 Michell J. physical computing soldering place your parts on board as flush to board as possible place side of soldering iron tip to both the copper the wire and then feed solder use the side of your tip to solder, this is hotter than the tip! if its lead free the bead will look a little dull, if its lead solder it will be shiny when you are done desoldering is a pain so before you solder make sure parts are in the right direction cut leads after you have tested that it works
