AGENDA
Session 2: Airfield Marking Programs
Session summaries
(Subject to change)
Please join us for an informative session on airfield markings presented by Mike Dikun, airfield maintenance superintendent from Reno-Tahoe International Airport in Reno, Nevada Dikun will be joined by Donna Speidel, owner of Sightline, Inc. Together they will present a “lessons learned” session on airfield markings and also discuss the best practices handbook that is being developed to support the airport operators airfield markings maintenance requirement in accordance with FAR Part 139. Session 3: Sea-Tac Green Airport Initiative An independent report conducted in 2007 by the Clean Airport Partnership revealed that Seattle-Tacoma International Airport has one of the strongest and most comprehensive environmental programs of any U.S. Airport. Some of the report highlights include: approval of a $5 million energy conservation project that will save the airport 3.4 million kilowatt-hours and $9.3 million over the next 20 years; retrofitted escalators that save 130,000 kilowatt-hours each month – this retrofit also adds to the life of the escalator motors; and, the collection of aircraft deicing fluids that directs them away from local waterways for processing at the local wastewater treatment plant. This session will cover the Sea-Tac (Seattle-Tacoma International Airport) initiatives and highlight some “green” initiatives at other airports.
Session 4: Aircraft Loading Bridges
If you are considering purchasing or upgrading aircraft loading bridges, you won’t want to miss this session. Collin MacDonald, vice president of sales and marketing with FMC Technologies, will be on hand to discuss the latest technologies and trends in the industry. MacDonald will discuss new innovations in loading bridge technology, the interface with Ground Power 400 hertz - 110v and 28v (commuter aircraft demand), preconditioned air systems, the ability to monitor through technology real time operations at the gates and interaction with the aircraft to assist airlines in the quest for fuel burn reduction. This discussion will cover controls, accessories and ancillary equipment.
Session 5: Aviation Inventory and Maintenance
The Aviation Inventory and Maintenance Systems Initiative (AIMS) is the continuous improvement effort to better and more efficiently manage and maintain the facilities, systems and equipment at the airport. Another large part of the AIMS initiative is to streamline and standardize work practices. The focus of AIMS is to help the airport better understand the value and life cycle of the assets maintained and to shift most of the maintenance to planned and scheduled work rather than reactive response. The goal is to optimally manage equipment, inventory, skilled labor and technology that support the broader aviation division efforts to control the cost per enplanement (CPE) for the airlines. All efforts are designed to improve the maintenance services we offer. Our airport partners by delivering both 24/7 operational reliability while achieving this in the most cost-effective manner possible.
Session 6: Sustainable Airport Facilities
There is a growing movement throughout the United States to integrate sustainable technologies and methodologies into the built environment. In many cases, the move to these green practices is assumed to translate into costeffective operation and maintenance processes, plus social and environmental benefits. This discussion will take a closer look at sustainability and the necessary steps to provide the airport facility owner with a strategic approach to long-term management of the built environment.
Session 7: Security Cameras - Issues and Challenges
Technological advancements are rapidly shifting the roles of traditional CCTV with a plethora of video tools now commercially available for specific airport applications. Learn what Salt Lake City and others are doing at their airports. This session will address CCTV’s unique applications, best practices and lessons learned at some of our nation’s airports.
Session 8: Interior/Exterior Way Finding/Signage
Airport signage plays a vital role in the movement of passengers through an airport. Kirk Gundersen will share insights from his 24 years of experience with signage at SLC. In this discussion, Gundersen will share his ideas on the advantages and disadvantages of in-house sign design and fabrication, over-signage, methods of lighting signs, new technologies and recommendations.
Session 9: Airport Lighting Control and Monitoring Systems (ALCMS)
Beginning in the early 90’s, airports started getting away from the FAA L 821 control panels and began installing ALCMS with touch screen computers in many of the nations air traffic control towers. This session will address the pros and cons of PLC-based vs. PC-based ALCMS and other issues you would want to consider if you are purchasing or upgrading an ACLMS.

Airport Safety and Operations Specialist
SCHOOL
July 19-20, 2008 • Seattle, Washington • Mtg. #080705 The American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are pleased to present the Advanced Airport Safety and Operations Specialist (ASOS) School, July 19-20, 2008, in Seattle, WA. Since 1989, more than 7,000 airport operations personnel have attended one or more of these schools. ASOS Schools have become a regular and recurring part of virtually every airport’s training program for operations staff. Endorsed and taught by FAA officials and other airport industry professionals, these nationally recognized courses are designed to increase awareness of FAA’s Part 139 airport certification program, as well as to enhance the professionalism and safety responsibilities of airport operations personnel. These professional schools are specifically tailored to airport personnel responsible for the day-to-day operations of public-use (both commercial service and general aviation) and military shared-use airports throughout the United States. This course will address the new FAR Part 139 requirements and provide the most recent information available, including new, revised, or pending changes for FAA Advisory Circulars impacting operations. This session also gives attendees a great opportunity to apply the new requirements in practical case study environments, as well as to test their own new revision or development ideas for the Airport Certification Manual.
This advanced school is designed for individuals who either have attended an earlier ASOS school or have at least three years of experience in airport operations. The advanced course has a unique blend of lectures, practical case studies and laboratories designed to increase retention and reinforce practices acceptable to FAA. The school balances prepared presentations, problem-solving exercises and interactive breakout groups, so that all attendees can actively participate in the proceedings. Participants are encouraged to discuss best management practices and lessons learned at their airports or from other experiences. All sessions will take place at the Doubletree Hotel Seattle Airport. The program sessions will begin on Saturday, July 19, at 8 a.m. (registration and continental breakfast at 7:30 a.m.), and end at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 20. Registration fees include two continental breakfasts, two lunches, coffee breaks and all handout materials. Confirmation of registration will be e-mailed to all attendees.
