Greenhouse tours
Pajaro Valley’s agriculture industry is a thriving one, processing and shipping out everything from artichokes to roses to strawberries to zucchini throughout the United States and the world. Although it is the lifeblood of South Santa Cruz County, it is also a world normally closed to the public. But every June, the annual Monterey Bay Greenhouse Growers Open House sets aside a day when the public can get a glimpse behind the opaque walls of the greenhouses, meet the growers and perhaps take home some of the products. The self-guided tour offers participants a chance to purchase locally grown products, and gives businesses a chance to promote themselves. It also raises money for charities chosen by each grower. Participants can visit businesses that grow and ship several varieties of flowers, native and succulent plants, and produce. Many of the businesses offer informational workshops and refreshments. Some hold contests and games. For information, visit www.montereybayfarmtours.org.
Welcome to the home of one of the most spectacular birding and wildlife venues in North America— the annual Monterey Bay Birding Festival. From soaring golden eagles, effortlessly gliding California condors, bushtits, Townsend’s warblers, scampering snowy plovers, to thousands of sooty shearwaters streaming along the ocean’s surface, few places can match the diversity of species as the Monterey Bay region. September marks the peak of fall migration, with wintering shorebirds arriving en masse, making it the ideal month for a birding festival. Located along the globally important Pacific Flyway, the Wetlands of Watsonville provide a resting stop for birds on their migratory journey. The wetland system of sloughs and their uplands offer breeding and year-round habitat for over 200 species of shorebirds, waterfowl, raptors and songbirds. Birds like the cinnamon teal and the barn swallow travel thousands of miles from Mexico and Central and South America to nest here. For information, visit www.montereybaybirding.org.

in the Pajaro Valley (cont.) Historic Apple Box Label Mural Project
The City of Watsonville has developed the Historic Label Art Mural Project as part of the City’s Public Art Program. A series of apple box label murals have been installed throughout Watsonville’s downtown area. Some of these murals were completed with city financial support, and others were completed by private individuals without city assistance. The murals are exact replicas of box and crate labels used in the early 1900s to identify the product, shipper or grower, and the area of origin. The Watsonville area, as well as the Pájaro Valley in general, had literally hundreds of labels in use during this time. There are presently 13 completed murals, created by five artists. The Redevelopment and Housing Department is in the process of developing a fullpage, full-color print brochure for the City of Watsonville’s Outdoor Art / Mural Walk program, along with a webbased, virtual walking tour. www.growinwatsonville.com/ Mural%20sample%20pt%20 %202.pdf

Food
Watsonville is known for its Mexican food, with taquerias selling simple tacos, burritos and other basics as good as anything that can be found outside Mexico. The city also boasts several sit-down Mexican restaurants. But those seeking different cuisines need look no further than Watsonville’s borders. Hungry visitors can find Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese, in addition to pizza places and even two hot dog stands.
Moss Landing
The Watsonville Farmers Market
A short drive through verdant Pajaro Valley farmland is Moss Landing, a quaint fishing village where visitors can nosh on world-class seafood, charter a fishing boat, take a kayak tour through a beautiful wetland system or go whale watching. During commercial crab season in November, visitors can purchase freshly caught Dungeness crab directly from the boat in Moss Landing Harbor. www.mosslandingchamber.com
On Fridays, Watsonville Plaza is transformed into a thriving outdoor market, with dozens of vendors selling produce and a variety of ready-made food. The Watsonville Farmers Market was established in 2000 and has remained a downtown mainstay. After strolling through the party-like atmosphere, visitors can check out downtown Watsonville’s eclectic mix of shops and markets. The Watsonville Farmers Market is open year-round. It is located in Watsonville Plaza along Peck Street. It is held Fridays from 3 until 7 p.m.
Beaches
Just a short drive from Watsonville are some of the best beaches in Santa Cruz County, with wide, open sands stretching out for miles along the coast. The wide, open space allows visitors to stretch out and relax, and offers the illusion of isolation, even when there are numerous visitors. Most of the beaches allow dogs on a leash.

W
ith a staff of physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains and aides, hospice offers medical, emotional and spiritual care for seriously ill people in the last months and days of their lives, and for their families. The organization was formed 35 years ago and serves some 1,000 patients per year. “We’re thrilled,” said CEO Michael Milward, who accepted the award for the organization, “It recognizes almost 140 employees and 250 volunteers, all of whom are so committed to the medical needs and the spiritual needs of our patients, and their families of course.” The organization runs grief support groups for adults, and in more than 40 schools countywide, in addition to a grief camp for young people who have lost a loved one.

The event features costumes and fun activities. Several food vendors sell cotton candy, nachos, burgers, pizza and other snacks typical of such gatherings. A fun celebration for children and their families, the carnival also honors loved ones. Every activity, every booth, is in honor of a child with cancer,” Butterworth said. ”You might think it’s sad but when you get there are people dressed up in costume, and everyone is there celebrating children with cancer. They are kids and we need to celebrate them and remember them.”

‘Auto Row’ — where Ford and Chrysler, Cadillac and Chevrolet dealers are located — houses staple dealerships in Watsonville.
O
ne dealership in particular, Marty Franich’s Ford and Chrysler, has a history that goes back to 1949. Rocky Franich, the current owner, said his father bought the Ford and Chrysler dealership in 1963 and sold the first car shortly after to Doug Davis, a Watsonville local. Now a fleet dealer, they provide around 50,000 cars to rental companies across the United States as well as selling locally.
22
“Watsonville Auto Center was one of the earliest in California where auto dealers all moved to one location,” Franich said. “Originally on Arthur Road, the city changed the name to Auto Center Drive about 20 years ago.” Throughout the years, the three dealerships have been joined by the antique service center and now Tractor Supply Co. “The one thing about

Tractor Supply Co. moving next door is that it is bringing traffic and excitement to the auto center,” Franich said. Overall though, he said the center has deep roots in the community. “Ford and Chrysler have a history of taking care of customers in the community,” he said. “We have a Hispanic staff — all dealers have staff that speaks the language of the people and all the dealerships in Watsonville are
very proud to represent the community.” Franich himself says he goes out of his way to support all the local charities and reviews them twice a month. “We donate to schools, health care, the ag industry and Rotary — we really try to give back to the community that has supported us.” While all dealerships have won awards on customer service, most recently Franich received a 50 year plaque by
Kyle Pease, Mark Wexler, Rocky, Henry Ford III Henry Ford III. “Ford is a friend of mine,” Franich said. “Once I became eligible he wanted to be the one who presented it to me, it was very exciting.” The other dealerships also serve their community in
unique ways. Watsonville Cadillac Buick GMC has a long history of serving the people of Santa Cruz County. Opened in the 1940s as Portola Motors, in August 2002 the name was changed to better
identify the business with the community it serves. A family-owned business, Watsonville Cadillac prides itself on its strong work ethic and keeping employees and customers happy. It is a full service GM dealership with
factory-trained technicians, managers and sales staff. It has won the General Motors Mark of Excellence award eight times. Service Manager Randy Van Winkle emphasized the importance of catering to Pajaro Valley customers. “We try to promote keeping our business local. When people buy locally from us, they are part of our ‘Miles of Smiles’ program. They are treated as our number-one priority. We pick up and deliver their vehicle for annual service. We do what we can to make our customers feel special. They like that friendly touch.” The business often steps up to help the community. One notable donation was a handicap-accessible van to the local hospice. When thieves stole bicycles and tricycles used by special education students at H.A. Hyde Elementary School in Watsonville, the dealership donated funds to replace them. “We care about our community,” Van Winkle said. Chevrolet of Watsonville joined auto row in September 2008. Owner Melvin Cooper said supporting local organizations is of high importance. “They come first,” he said. “We are extremely involved in helping.” An annual custom car show at the dealership raises money for numerous nonprofit organizations. The funds have benefited Jacob’s Heart, Second Harvest Food Bank, the Heritage Foundation, the Ag History Project, Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department and other good causes. Sponsorship of golf tournaments and a presence at local events such as the Strawberry Festival, the Pajaro Valley Chamber Business Expo and

Cinco de Mayo are priorities. Involvement in Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce are also at the top of the list. “We are out in the community,” Cooper said. The business owner also takes pride in his employees, the awards they have won and the expertise they provide customers, whether buying a new or pre-owned vehicle, or seeking repairs. “They go above and beyond the call of duty,” Cooper added.

Thank you Pajaro Valley & The Tri-County Area!
TESTIMONIALS: From our 1st meeting on Green Valley Road, to the time we turned the key on Rancho Brazil Lane our journey was effortless because we were fortunate enough to have found an exceptional REALTOR. One of the best in the business! Abundance of patience, knowledge of the area and the ability to understand our wants and facilitate them to reality, all done with professionalism and a sense of humor. Even with the coast to coast transaction, your diligence in looking after our interest was comforting to both of us. After our purchase and arrival, you continued to guide us through the myriad of complexities of moving to a new area. Not only were you our REALTOR, but now we consider you a family friend. Love, Janet & Michael Krupa
Becky Campos was an excellent real estate agent for us. She kept us informed, answered all of our inquiries quickly, and provided sensible solutions to any problem that arose. She checked on the house since we reside out of state and made sure the yard was maintained in good condition as well as finding reasonable services in support of the sale. She is great at attention to detail and tying up loose ends. Most importantly, she did not renege or back off the marketing promises that she made when we first interviewed her. We highly recommend her, without reservation, to anyone looking for a real estate agent to represent them. Nancy & Gerald Yamada
Thanks Becky for all your help. I was very impressed with all of the people at Coldwell Banker Campos Real Estate. Great Job! Bill Dorey
