Michael Archer Wins Emerging New York Architects Merit Award
AIA New York and the AIANY Emerging New York Architects (ENYA) Committee are proud to announce the 2016 ENYA Merit Award. The purpose of the award is to recognize the significant contributions of members at an early stage of their career and to congratulate them on achieving licensure. Awards are not based on financial need, as much as they are based on contributions the individual has made to their profession, their community, and/or AIA New York. The New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has honored SOM architect Michael Archer with the Emerging New York Architects (ENYA) Merit Award. This award recognizes Michael’s significant contribution as a young architect to the profession and community. The award was presented at the 2017 AIA New York Board Inaugural on December 13th, 2016. At SOM, Michael has worked on projects including One World Trade Center, 35 Hudson Yards, and the Manhattan West Development. He also started SOM’s Licensure Open House, a quarterly gathering to support designers at SOM who are working towards earning their licenses. Michael is also active in the broader design community. He serves on the NCARB Ethics Task Force; is a former chair of the AIA Jason Pettigrew Memorial Scholarship jury; and is the AIA New York Chapter Architect Licensing Advisor, where he founded the ARE Workshop, a biweekly, yearlong licensure support program open to the public.

MANHATTAN WEST - SOUTHEAST TOWER | SKIDMORE, OWINGS & MERRILL LLP | 2016
PROJECT SUMMARY Leading the technical team of SOM through the schematic design phase of Manhattan West’s Southeast Tower was a rare opportunity. The master plan for the site contains 4 new commercial towers, full retail podium and commercial public plaza. All of these spaces and structures will be designed and built by SOM in collaboration with in-house structural engineering teams. The resulting innovation is evident in the Southeast Tower’s unique geometry and lobby presence.

Principal responsibilities included full technical coordination and documentation of the 1.4 million sf tower and its integration into the retail podium and plaza below. Significant attention was paid to mechanical, electrical, IT, and plumbing systems design and coordination within the building’s structural core. Unique to the challenge of developing Class A office space in New York is the cutting edge spatial and infrastructural offerings that must be made available to prospective tenants. In order to maximize leasable space, an optimized curtain wall assembly was developed alongside a curtain wall fabricator, mechanical systems were optimally placed without through-tower offsets to reduce equipment size, and cooperation with all local jurisdictions was achieved in order to locate vital urban power systems within the building’s podium rather than below grade. The closer proximity of these systems added further efficiency to the required systems for future tenants. Carefully planned elevator zoning enabled the core design to subtly phase and shift systems to emergent spaces as the tower rises, creating the opportunity to step the building’s facade back as the core narrows. Innovations in core planning, building geometry, and structural systems coalesce into a tower that achieves maximum height, rentable floors, leasable space, and excellent integration into surrounding public and commercial spaces. The result is a truly integrated commercial office development.

MANHATTAN WEST - SOUTHEAST TOWER | SKIDMORE, OWINGS & MERRILL LLP | 2016
PROJECT SUMMARY Hudson Yards Tower E is being designed and built in the largest real estate development in New York’s history. Comprised of over 1 million sf, Tower E will contain residences, office space, public facilities, building-wide amenities, outdoor spaces, and a flagship hotel for Equinox on its 15th thru 29th floors. Principal responsibilities throughout the hotel phases were conducted in two parts; the overall coordination of the hotel project, and the separate undertaking to coordinate and build a mock-up prototype guest room at full scale. The fast-paced, collaborative process of working with an associated interior design firm resulted in a full-scale prototype for executive and owner approval on site. The resolution of key details and material choices were fed directly into the BIM model used to document the tower and its interiors. During the mock-up process a full set of construction documents and design presentations were delivered. During the hotel coordination a full set of construction documents for the hotel ground floor entry, terrace and amenity floors, and guest rooms was developed in quick succession. As a leading developer of high-profile projects, Related Companies allowed our firm access to premier consultant teams and product manufacturers. The highly collaborative nature of this project epitomizes high-performance design and development. No detail or project component was developed in isolation,. No detail is standard, no plan the same. Only through the use of technology and successful team management is one able to produce and coordinate such a large bespoke project. When opened in 2019 the hotel will serve as the flagship hotel and extended stay brand of Equinox, and will promote healthy lifestyles and activity through an all-natural material palette, sophisticated lighting control system, and extensive curated public spaces.

CHENGDU UNION SUN | KOHN PEDERSEN FOX | 2015
Activating the Public Realm Part of a massive waterfront development in the 4th largest city in China, Chengdu’s new Union Sun development will host class A office towers, a luxury hotel highrise, three residential towers, and a premier retail and cultural podium. Incorporating massive civic spaces at the podium’s immediate exterior creates a blend of public and private enterprise much needed in a rapidly developing city such as Chengdu. Soaring interior atriums anchor the podium’s interior at north, south, east and west entrances. These atriums serve as cardinal axes along which retail arcades extend and arc, directing inhabitants along an ever-changing sweep of retail spaces, cultural venues, cinemas, and art installations. Pivitol to this development is its exterior form which does not seek to fill its zoning envelope, but rather to form a composition which can be viewed at an urban scale as well as experienced subtly as it undulates along its podium at grade.

A Contextual Interior Experience The interior of the retail and cultural podium at Chengdu Union Sun retains both the delicacy and monumentality by which Chinese architecture continues to astound. A mix of intricate detailing and texture with monumental formal gestures creates a soaring and unique interior experience. The scarcity of civic space in Chengdu served as a catalyst for an emphasis on gathering spaces and cultural hubs. At no cost to the budgeted GFA the terminus of each retail arcade aligns with large atrium spaces used to house performances, art exhibitions, and cultural events. A material palette akin to the natural materials used in traditional Chengdu architecture was incorporated into each space at varying degrees of tradition. The result is a modern spatial experience articulated with traditional hints of Chinese culture.

C) Food and beverage arcade
B) Mediateque and cultural venue
D) North Gallery
Retail Movement Retail program is organized along arcuated corridors. These corridors provide for gradually unfolding retail experiences while still affording consistent lines of sight to each cultural atrium supporting each terminus. A connection to Chengdu’s MRT line below grade and an extensive subterranean parking plinth accomodate a bevy of visitors to this large destination center. Prevelent vertical circulation ties all atriums together as well as a main central void space.

NEW WORLD CENTER | KOHN PEDERSEN FOX | 2014
A Curated Retail Environment
WITHIN A CULTURAL DISTRICT
New World Center, the home of a new conceptual retail branding experience by development pioneers K11, hosts an innovative commercial podium. The experience is poised to compete with the modern spectacle of virtual commercial experiences by privileging curated retail zones. By appropriating zones of each floor plate to specific retail market sectors a remarkable diversity of arcade and spatial conditions emerges. The central atrium spaces and select void punctures throughout these arcades provides spatial unification amongst otherwise diverse and far ranging experiences. Central to the mission statement of K11 is the incorporation of curated art and product exhibitions that merge an appreciation of art and design with lifestyle and experience. These elements compliment each other within this diverse setting.

An Open Visitor Experience Detailing the storefront system at New World Center proved vital to expressing the open retail concept. This notion allowed a blending of retail arcade and retail tenant spaces to form one integrated visitor experience. The open storefronts created a sense of depth not found in typical glass arcades. By integrating fire suppression and security systems into the storefront bulkhead and demising walls our team was able to create a largely open partition between these two vital zones of interaction A) Detail of open storefront shutter system

KENT AVENUE DEVELOPMENT | GF55 PARTNERS | 2014
Our development at 149 Kent Avenue responds to the growing need for diverse housing accommodations in the rapidly expanding neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Since our proposal-winning submission I have had the privilege of participating in the projects entirety. My responsibilities include, amongst a myriad of others, preliminary zoning analysis, schematic design, a lengthy design development around a complex mixed use program request, and production of a two-volume suite of construction documents. The project requires extensive adjacent property accommodation, soil remediation given its site’s brown field status, and submission to the Department of Housing Preservation and Development for review of over 30 various units being offered to moderate income and mobility-impaired citizens.

PARK AVENUE DEVELOPMENT | GF55 PARTNERS | 2011
A competition-winning proposal for the redevelopment of the Harlem riverfront, Park Avenue is a 400,000 sf development featuring over 300 private resdiences for a range of income demographics, a childcare and early education facility, elaborate public/private gardens, a public playground, and rooftop terraces. The complexity of the project is highlighted by its adjacency to the elevated Metro North rail line, Harlem River Drive, a public park, and an entire neighborhood undergoing a calculated and delicate redevelopment.

SEWARD PARK DEVELOPMENT | GF55 PARTNERS | 2013
The area around Seward Park and its current derilict lots is an evolving and dynamic environment. This area of the Lower East Side is in need of increased housing and commercial activity. The proposed architectural intervention on such a site is a high quality, mixed use development on an important parcel along Delancey Street. The development of the site will replace the existing structure of the Essex Street Market with an attractive LEED building of market rate condominiums and large commercial tri-level space on the ground floor. Glazed mezzanine rooftop gardens and soaring public interiors create a spatial sequence that is connected visually and acoustically throughout the public sector of this proposal.

ASHLAND ARTS COMPLEX | GF55 PARTNERS | 2012
The bustling arts district of Downtown Brooklyn has seen unprecedented residential and cultural development activity in recent years. This competition entry for a vacant lot adjacent to the famous BAM Theater Center provides live/work residences for the artistic community, a gallery atrium for public art shows, contextual commercial space at grade, and several community facilities. The design focused on the use of contextual materials, as can be seen in the successful adaptive reuse of several historic spaces currently in use by BAM, while incorporating a progressive spatial vocabulary to maximize connections from inside and out, public to private. The result is a rich series of views that allow the building and its zones to be as dynamic as the performances that take place within them.

11TH STREET APARTMENTS | GF55 PARTNERS | 2014
It was with our 11th St Apartments project that I truly developed my inseparable bond with the practice of architecture. 11th St has been my personal responsibility and, while under the close guidance of our firm’s founding partner, I have taken this project from the drawing board to the construction site over the course of my almost 3 year tenure within our office. From initial conceptual design to full construction document production and coordination following a rigorous realization of preliminary exterior detailing with talented consultants I have been charged with delivering this building to the world. As construction draws to a close I am routinely present on site to conduct the orchestra that is currently assembling the newest addition to Long Island City, Queens. The building is scheduled to be completed by April of 2014 and at which it will welcome its first residents.
