Welcome from the Supervisor & Mayor
Saugerties is celebrating its 200th birthday this year! We’ve added a number of historyfocused events to our community calendar, and we hope you think about coming here and taking in this fun, friendly and historical community of ours. As a way of saying “Come join us! Our doors are always open!” . . . we wanted our photo for this year’s “Discover Saugerties” brochure to be taken at the entrance to our 1727 Kiersted House, home of the Saugerties Historical Society. A must-see when you come visit. Saugerties is a source of great pride for both of us. There’s a real sense of community here, and a great blend of history on the one hand, and leading-edge progress on the other. Reading through this booklet, we’re sure you’ll see evidence of that blend. There are events we have planned that will celebrate our area’s history and our Town’s Bicentennial. Once again, our active Chamber will be hosting a summer-long public art display in our Village, with each work of art based on the design (by local craftsman Marcus “Skip” Arthur) of our 1869 Hudson River lighthouse. Our May Historic Houses Tour this year will feature homes that date back to 1811. And come to any of the Farmers Markets that are held year round, enjoy the fruits of local farmers, bakers and other producers’ labors and take in the sense of community and a local focus that we think are so important to our area. You’ll see evidence of progress, with construction on the new, beautifully designed Diamond Mills Inn and Conference Center; a completed expansion of our Carnegie Library on Washington Avenue; and shovel-ready and Internet-ready locations all along our Kings Highway business corridor. Too much to cover in this brief intro of ours . . . have a look inside and then come visit!

The Saugerties American Legion Museum was established in 1986, at the Lamouree-Hackett Post 72 building that continues to house the museum today. Containing over 300 items of historical interest, the museum focuses on Saugerties citizens and their participation during wartime. The museum is open Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Other days, it is open by appointment only, for individuals or groups.
Art Lab
www.SaugertiesArtLab.com Art Lab is a not-for-profit organization working to provide free and low-cost art education emphasizing hands-on learning techniques and creative expression. One of its locations is the Farmer’s Market, giving kids the chance to create while their parents visit the Market.
Cantine Field (Cantine Veterans Memorial Complex)
Washington Avenue Extension (845) 246-5890 Village.Saugerties.ny.us/cantine This 127-acre sports and recreation complex is owned and operated by the Town of Saugerties under the Department of Parks, Recreation and Buildings. The complex proudly offers outstanding baseball fields, soccer fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, a Skate Park, playgrounds, pavilions with kitchens and the fully enclosed Kiwanis Ice Arena. It is also the home of the Hudson Valley Garlic Festival and the 4th of July fireworks, both sponsored by the Kiwanis Club.
Donlon Auditorium

The house retains its wide wood plank floors, box stairs, Georgian mantels and 18th century glass windowpanes. Open 11am to 3pm Saturdays and 1pm to 4pm on Sundays from May 28th to Monday, Oct. 10th or by appointment.
Historic Lighthouse
168 Lighthouse Drive (845) 247-0656 www.SaugertiesLighthouse.com The Saugerties lighthouse was built in 1869. Currently a top rated Bed and Breakfast, the lighthouse also has a museum with models, displays and artifacts. The lighthouse can be approached by water or by foot through a nature conservancy. The trail starts just east of a Coast Guard Station fence, about 50 feet from the road, through a steel gate.

This arena features an 85foot by 190-foot Olympic-size, fully-enclosed, refrigerated ice rink. The rink is used for recreational and instructional skating, promotional events/activities, tournaments and youth and adult leagues.

Features include an amphitheater containing the Grand Prix Ring and a Feature Hunter Ring, 1,100 permanent stalls and permanent buildings housing offices, food concessions, rest rooms and equestrian shops. In 2011, HITS hosts the Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix (Sunday, September 11th).

With its location on the Hudson River, and with the Esopus Creek meandering through it, Saugertis provides many opportunities for trying out your kayaking and canoeing skills. There are 4 convenient locations for launcing your kayaks or canoes: the George J. Opus 40
50 Fite Road (845) 246-3400 www.Opus40.org Conceived by artist/sculptor Harvey Fite, this abandoned bluestone quarry was transformed over 37 years into a monument of soaring beauty with Overlook Mountain as a background. The site also features a small quarryman’s museum and a series of outdoor concerts. It is open each Fnday from Memorial weekend to Columbus Day.

The Lions Club Playground at Cantine Field includes swings, slides, monkey bars and a merry-go-round. There is also a seasonal filtered wading pool for small children (10am to 6pm, M-F, from July 1 to late August) with a pavilion and picnic area. The playground includes a regulation outdoor basketball court and a Little League baseball field.

Built as a community project and opened May 1st, 1994, this popular wooden playground is located near the Cantine Field soccer fields and the Kiwanis Ice Arena.

Arts & Recreation • tourism The well-maintained, low-trafficked country roads in Saugerties allow bicyclists easy access to the Hudson River, Esopus Creek, serene marshlands and more. A flyer with the bike routes is available at either the Saugerties Town Hall, the Saugerties Village Offices or the web page above.

Rip Van Winkle Hikers

Saugerties is a great locale for walking and hiking for all ages and abilities. If you’re interested in joining a group, consider the Rip Van Winkle Hikers, a hiking group open to everyone. The club meets the 4th Monday of every other month, beginning in January, at 7 pm at the Atonement Lutheran Church on Market St.
Seamon Park is a beautifully landscaped year-round park. It is the home of the annual Mum Festival in October and is also decorated for the Christmas holiday season. It is the perfect destination for strolling and viewing the Catskills from its peaks, and a favored spot for wedding pix.

WHAT IS THERE FOR THE KIDS TO DO? Skateboarding at the Town of
Saugerties Skate Park (next to the Kiwanis Ice Arena and across from HITS, on Washington Avenue Extension)
Golf. There’s a great 9-hole golf course in Palenville (Rip Van Winkle Country Club) and in Saugerties (The Lazy Swan) and there are other courses (all with very reasonable greens fees) nearby. Swimming/Camping/Fishing. There’s great summertime swim-
ming at the Saugerties Village Beach. For camping, you can visit the Saugerties/Woodstock KOA (Kampgrounds of America) location or the Rip Van Winkle Campground. And the Esopus Creek is a wellknown fishing destination for serious anglers.
Kayaking. Great accommodations for kayakers at 2 parks set
right on the river -- Malden Mini-Park and Glasco Mini-Park. Also, you can launch at 2 Village locations on the Esopus Creek (Saugerties Village Beach and Tina Chorvas Park).
Bicycling. Visit Village Hall (43 Partition Street) or Town Hall (4

Equestrian. Like horses? You won’t see any more impressive horses or horse riding than what you can see at the Horse-Showsin-the-Sun (HITS) Inc. complex, off Washington Avenue. Winter Sports in Saugerties: • Ice Skating/Hockey at the Kiwanis Ice Arena (Washington Ave.)
• Sleigh Riding. Snyders Farm Hill, off Route 212, on the righthand side of the road, within 500 yeards of the point at which 212 meets Route 32. If you park on the shoulder of Route 212, be careful that your car is parked well off the road, as it is a busy State road. • Skiing. The Catskills offer some great skiing and Saugerties makes a nice, close, warm and comfy base station to visit any of the following nearby ski resorts: Belleayre Mountain, Hunter Mountain, Sawkill Family Ski Center, and/or Windham.

Saugerties...Celebrating 200 Years
The second important event was the arrival of industrialist Henry Barclay in 1825. He immediately secured title to land on both sides of the Esopus Creek where he built his dam and used the water flow to generate power needed to run his mills and build an industrial community. Saugerties grew from 40 families in 1825 to over 4,000 people in the Village alone. Irish, Italians, Germans and scores of others arrived to work in these mills. It was discovered also that the quarries here held some of the most beautiful bluestone in the
Settled in its early days by the Dutch, the Town of Saugerties sits nestled
between the base of the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson River. It was
purchased from the Esopus Sachem Tribe in 1677 by Governor Edmund Andros for a piece of cloth, a shirt, a loaf of bread and maize. The earliest settler in Saugerties, known as "the little sawyer," was Barent Cornelis Volge; from early documents, it is known that he had secured a title from the Esopus Sachem to these lands before 1663. It was from him that the name of the town originated, showing the community's early Dutch influence. Saugerties has the unique distinction of being the only community in the nation with this name. Saugerties experienced minimal growth after the mid-1600's until two major events occurred. One was the coming in 1710 of the Palatines, a group of refugees who had fled the Rhine Valley in Germany to settle in West Camp, a hamlet of this community. At the West Camp church there is a monument paying tribute to these people who came to America fleeing persecution, arriving with barely the clothing on their backs. Today, many of the descendants of these brave people still reside in this community.

With the arrival of all these immigrants, businesses sprang up to provide all that was needed to sustain a community. Establishments such as Smith Hardware, Montano's Shoes and the Exchange Hotel still exist today. The Village of Saugerties where these businesses are located has the distinction of being the first business district in the United States to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The people of Saugerties have always had tremendous pride in who they are, and so they should. It is evident in the preservation of places such as the Kiersted House, the Saugerties Lighthouse, Cantine Memorial Field, Seamon Park, the newly expanded Saugerties Library, and monuments to our Veterans. Today, the Town of Saugerties, which is celebrating its 200th anniversary of incorporation, is still growing and thriving. Industry still has a home here but the community has evolved into so much more. The community has become an important tourist location energized by the artists, environmentalists, historians, antiquarians, restauranteurs and sports enthusists who reside here today, causing Saugerties to be be named one the 10 coolest places to visit in the USA. The Village of Saugerties has been described as “cool”, “historic”, “friendly”, and “Mayberry-like”. We agree with all of those descriptions, and yet, it’s something more that keeps Saugerties unique . . . whether your focus is on yesterday, today and tomorrow. They say a picture’s worth a thousand words. Here are 5 pictures that show (clockwise from upper left) construction underway on the beautiful Diamond Mills Inn and Conference Center; Donlon Auditorium (home of innumerable basketball games and other events, and named after Captain Roger H. C.
