TH E SL AB TOWER CON CR E TE T RANSI TI ONS Partner Yongki Sunarta, Myriem Tlemcani

The analysis of structural mavericks aimed to transform their structural language and soak up its peculiar features in the view of developing an architecture for vertical living. The thin shell structure mastered by Zehrfuss, Torroja and Candela allows large span in the horizontal direction. This lead to the idea of a new slab typology following this principle and translating it into a pressured surface, allowing the slab to overcome its conventional flat characteristic to a multi-level surface. The final prototype outcome is a vertical architecture built from a horizontal structural element: the slab. The slab, without any other architectural elements, it also performs as beam that allows structural stability. Through stacking of multiple slabs, allows vertical load transfer to the ground. The slope is the element that allows the transition to a vertical structure and challenges the idea of inhabiting the space. The logic behind this design is a square grid, which varies the number of slopes in each side of it, ending up in more or less corrugated or folded surfaces. A more sloped surface is more structural and would, hence, be used in the lower levels to carry the load, but would also create more space division and smaller room sizes. The building process is mainly comprised of stacking. This action erects the tower to redefine the typical stories organization, suggesting an alternative for space-saving through mid-level floors as opposed to “condensed agglomerates of sealed units around a core. The slab design also opens up to a variety of possibilities of room types from average flat units to free open spaces, according to how they are configured. This is how the tower reaches collective qualities on top of the rest mentioned above. Watch the video on Youtube: https://youtu.be/Snr68mdX5CI

THE G AP ELDERLY HOUSI NG

Partner Hwanseo Lee Site Wah Fu Estate

Wah Fu Estate is located on the South-West end of Hong Kong Island. Wah Fu Estate was built as a new town concept in 1967. It is the earliest successful public housing planning project. Due to its distance from the city, most of the living population in the town is now above the age of 55. This project is exploring the method of reconstruction of old apartment building through implication of “gap to solve the missing sequence of the living space and the commercial zones. Through reconnection of the spaces, we found this area to be a core of the town. Rich in diversity of people and activities, providing community oriented life for the elderly living in different zones of Wah Fu Estate. Community Scale, the project brings in main circulation from the commercial complex to housing area. We aimed to activate the unused platform to create a hub, by making use of the existing programmes. Where in building scale, the gap inbetween the floor levels, brings in community oriented programmes, perform as a gathering spot among the residents. In unit scale, small shared gap inbetween the units, used for smaller interaction between the residents, to solve the issue of lonliness and possible dangerous moments for elderly.

WEAVI NG I N UR B AN I NT ERVENT I ON Site Sheung Wan

Taking chosen topic of Land & Sea relationship, was investigating Sheung Wan from the inner town side to the pier side. Focusing on the land reclaimation that has shaped the Land & Sea throughout the time. Tried to find how that would have affected Sheung Wan. Through the land reclamation and change in transportation through time, car roads and highway were constructed inbetween the newer and older areas of land. This has created obstruction for the pedestrians, so that bridges and underground pathways became the only ways for movement between two lands. Thus, we visualized Sheung Wan as small Hong Kong, where it is consist of small islands, which is seperated by the body of water: roads and vehicles, and they are connected by point to point connections: bridges. Even though the physical land has enlarged, because of the poor accessibility, it feels like tow individual islands psychically, rather than an extended land. Final proposal consists two main zones and redesigned bus terminal. Main pavilions, community one that’s closer to the bus station and leisure one clcoer to the pier side. Main approach of this project is to invite Sheung Wan in-town residents to the pier side, taking advantage of open sight place, activating the leisure park. Re-connecting the disconnected reclaimed land through implementing cultural activities. By pulling out local residents through the bridge Western Market connecting to the bus station, connecting local residents and tourists, making this place a multi-culture zone, blends disconnected islands to become one.

SOUND -T EMPERATUR E M A PPING Bartlett Summer Studio 2018 Site Along the River Thames, London

As a visitor in London, sensation of the city was rather fresh. On the site, the main activity to search for concept was to blindfold ourselves to sense the site. Rather than evoking sense of touch and being physical, focused on the abstraction of sound of the space. Image and colors of sounds, physical sensation of sound, layer of sounds and harmony of sounds. The project is exploring the relationship of the hearing to the physical sensation. According to research, people can differentiate the sound of pouring hot and cold water. This refers to the difference in speed of molecular movement. Spatializing the depth of the sounds varies in different thermal sensations. Through the reimagination of the spatial quality through the sound, in molecular unit, allowed new visualization of the sound.

MoMa Charette is a competition project for MoMA renovation in 1997. Rem Koolhaas once mentioned elevator as one of the key inventions that revolutionized architecture. We approached the project through rethinking OMA’s retroactive and avant-garde influence on the machinery flow in MoMA Charette, by experiencing travelator, escalator and elevator. Flux of travelator, escalator and elevator flows through the whole art museum. Taking the lifted surface as our main subject to have architectural and artistic experience of the museum horizontally, diagonally and vertically, guided with the endless flow of water and wind.

WORLD AMATEUAR B AS KETBALL ASSOC I AT I ON Logo Design & Videography

A logo isn’t just a text, it is the summary of the stories beyond the visual, in extension to the history that will be built along with the activities. The focus of the design was to have dynamic motion of sports spirit, while preserving figure of a ball in one. This has been the basis of all designs, from posters to videos. As part of the Korean Basketball team of The University of Hong Kong, always had enthusiasm towards basketball. With other team members, we decided to go beyond university level of league. That was the start of WABA (World Amateur Basketball Association). Amateur league of sports were rarely taken seriously with its identity. Thus, I decided to make WABA, with spirit and identity towards basketball. 8 52 PR O DUCT I ONS Videography Club

852 productions is a videography club, found in 2018, by my friend Jungheum and I, to create a Korean student community in Hong Kong. Started off with HKU, creating videos in reflection to the daily life as a Korean student in Hong Kong. Later, to be further elaborated with Korean restaurants and places to visit, with the persepctive of Korean culture. The logo of 852 productions consists three parts of our team: Planning Team, Design Team, Video Team. Concept of our first set of project, VLOG, is borrowed from Instagram, where it has been essential part of dailylife, documenting and recording thoughts of each individuals. First video of this project has elaborated daily school life of a freshman vs. junior. In Korea, male students returning from the complementary military service, are often called fossils, because of their age, and they are seen as outsiders. We wanted to change this culture, respecting all individuals, so that it became our first video. COVID-19 in 2020 has paused our first project, and allowed to develop special project. Unlike daily life that we that we thought are daily, are not daily anymore. Due to sudden change of academic schedules, some are missing home in Korea, some are missing Hong Kong life. We depicted this contrary perspectives through interviews with VLOG. Before I came in Hong Kong, there were minimal informations on HKU and HKUKSA (Korean Student Association). Thus, after two years of experience in Hong Kong, decided to create a Youtube channel, sharing informations and lifestyle of Hong Kong as a Korean student.
