hen planning our wedding, we were looking for a venue that stood out and catered for all our needs, and Cowes Yacht Haven definitely exceeded our expectations. From the picturesque view of the marina whilst we said our vows on the balcony, to the wide choice of delicious food prepared for us, it ticked all the boxes. The layout of the venue made our day flow seamlessly, and the staff could not have been more accommodating.”

From Pirates of the Caribbean to Abu Dhabi Director of Sailcare Company UK Limited Gerry Faram makes a good cup of coffee in the morning. That is something he needs after working through the night on a number of overnight sail repairs. New tenant at Cowes Yacht Haven, Sailcare, are already frantically busy during the racing season.
W
ith sail making experience extending around the world from Americas Cup teams in New Zealand and sail repairs in Palma to North Sails Service Department on the south coast, Gerry worked for the GBR Challenge Americas Cup Team until its conclusion at the end of 2004. Looking for another form of income, he realised that he could put his years of experience to use in setting up his own business. This rapidly led to him becoming the Isle of Wight’s service agent for North Sails. This is of huge benefit to
sailors with boats based in Cowes Yacht Haven and the local area. Customers know they can rely on Sailcare to do the highest standard of work, with their staff having over 30 years of combined experience and all having worked for North Sails for a number of years. The sail loft is open seven days a week during the racing season, concentrating on overnight sail repair supporting the local regattas. Winter service, laundry, re-cuts etc. are also undertaken during the quieter months.

How Important is Good Nutrition for Yacht Racing? Any successful sportsman will tell you that eating correctly is the most important element of their training programme. A yacht racing crew is no different.

hilst loss of performance is less noticeable on a short two - three-hour round the cans race, it is significantly noticeable on longer races and, in particular, overnight offshore races. If you then consider a regatta such as Cowes Week, the difference in crew performance can be as much as 30%.
The golden rule is to drink at least 2-3 litres of water per day, replace the sugary foods with good complex carbohydrate alternatives, such as natural oat, fruit and nut based energy bars - and don’t drink excessive alcohol!

A Boat with Soul
Jamie Matheson has a high-profile career as Executive Chairman of Brewin Dolphin, the new title sponsor of Commodores’ Cup. But he loves nothing better than sailing on his classic boat Opposition.
My boat
O
Jamie Matheson’s ‘Opposition’
pposition is a beautiful Sparkman & Stephens boat, which has been tenderly restored by Jamie. Built locally in 1971 for Ted Heath, it was his second Morning Cloud. That year’s Admiral Cup team won their class at Hobart. Fourteen years ago his late brother-in-law bought her. But he agrees that it was love at first sight. “I had always vowed never to own a boat, but then after 18 months I bought it from my brother-in-law. Although she had lasted 35 years, these boats weren’t designed for durability. She has basically been rebuilt and is now stronger”. Opposition was the first boat that Jamie owned (although he does own a motor boat). Deciding to have the rebuild job done here in Cowes, he says that “lots of my friends were stunned at how good she looked once she was back in the water! We took her back to Scotland for a couple of years – bringing her back to Cowes for regattas. Then my wife and I decided to keep her here.” Jamie is delighted with the way she sails and says that “she sails just as well as she ever did before, although stronger and stiffer”. He hopes that she is true to her pedigree.
Although there are many lovely production yachts, he decided to buy a classic boat rather than a modern one because “when you buy a classic you are buying character,

The most important factor is hydration. Not being properly hydrated before the race starts will quickly lead to increased de-hydration without realising it. A 2% reduction in hydration = 15-20% reduction in energy output, and significantly reduced concentration. Sugary drinks and high sugar snack foods should also be avoided as they provide a quick energy rush that within 10-15 minutes of eating, creates a significant energy crash.

not necessarily comfort or convenience. Wooden boats have soul.” Taking part in the British Classics every year is part of his calendar, and the key draw for Jamie is “being able to sail with other classic boats. It’s competitive but the boats are what it’s all about; people take enormous care of them. It’s beautiful to see and watch. Whilst you have to concentrate during racing you get to see craftsmanship at the same time.” Coming from a sailing family - Jamie’s father was an enthusiastic yachtsman, and he would sail with both his parents - after a while he became the nipper on a 35 tonne ketch. He also did dinghy sailing at school. However, his memory is that it was “much more cold and wet!” He started as a cruising yachtsman and at that time he adored cruising the Clyde and West Scotland. Then he went to Cowes for racing and really enjoys the Solent: “it challenges my limited skills. I love being down here for racing. But there is nothing to beat Scotland for cruising ground; both my wife and I enjoy this.” Asked about how he copes with the cold weather in Scotland he responded that “that’s one of the reasons I’m down here”. With more sunshine than anywhere else in Britain, down on the South coast, who couldn’t agree with that!

ith the help of Fairview Sailing, who supplied the 15 Beneteau Oceanis 37s for the two-day event in June, the event was “very successful”. After lunch at Banana Wharf at Fairview’s base in Port Hamble on Thursday, and an afternoons race training, the fleet sailed over to Cowes Yacht Haven, where over 100 people enjoyed a hog roast on the covered terrace looking over the Solent. Friday saw several exciting races, which because of the breezy weather, were timed, over a 5-mile course. In the evening the teams were treated to a splendid regatta dinner in the Events Centre (inset).

If you are travelling from the mainland to Cowes by ferry remember that the crossings can be busy during the week, so allow extra time to get here. The quickest way to Cowes is on the Red Jet hi-speed service from Southampton, which takes just 25 minutes. There is also a dedicated service from Lymington to Cowes during the event. If you are arriving by car from elsewhere on the Island, the best place to park is up at Northwood House where you can park all day and be just a short 5-minute walk from the centre of the town.
2
Watch the races start from the Royal Yacht Squadron start line, where brass cannons are fired to start the races and you will get a ringside view of all the action. The start sequence begins at 10.25 and there is then a start every 5 minutes until 12.45 each day. The only exception to this is Thursday 16 August, when the Artemis Challenge will start at 10am.
3
Having watched the starts make your way down to the Parade for a drink and a snack, and you can even hop on a spectator boat to enjoy the racing up-close. There’s live entertainment, fun and games for the kids and a great vibe.
4
A walk down Cowes’s delightful historic high street with its twists and turns and historic buildings is a must. With dozens of great shops, art galleries and attractions it’s a wonderful thing to do.
5
Call into the Cowes Yacht Haven Regatta Village and watch the race boats returning to their docks. At the same time you can enjoy the attractions including the Talisker Boat House, the Pimms Bus and Cowes Cocktail Bar. There are some great food outlets offering everything from crepes to oysters and a range of retail outlets where you can buy the official clothing range, courtesy of Gill, the Regatta Watch from BOSS, or get kitted out in a pair of the original boat shoes from Sperry Top-Sider. The nightlife is jumping with fantastic live bands every evening.
Interview
Nick Crane, BBC Coast
A Love of Britain’s Coastline Nick Crane takes time out of his busy filming schedule during Round the Island Race weekend at Cowes Yacht Haven to discuss the popular BBC series, Coast, and why he loves Britain’s coastline.
S
ailing is a lifeline for Nick, although he doesn’t generally race (he used to race bicycles though), but he admits to never having visited Cowes before! Here’s what he had to say:
How did the original idea for the Coast series come about? It was a BBC idea and it was meant to be for a one-off Coast series. Five people were assembled - Mark, Alice, Miranda, Neil and myself as the lead presenter. We went clockwise around Britain and it took one year to film. We were weeks on the road and it was the greatest adventure of my life! The secret to its success is that the presenters are not doing it for egotistical reasons, and they all love it. Britain’s population has reclaimed the coast for themselves. It’s always been about the contributors; they are the voices of the coast, not the presenters.

On Friday 17 August, Skandia Team GBR will be in Cowes for the day, following their representation of Great Britain the previous week. Plus of course in the evening there is the fabulous Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week fireworks display which starts at 9.30pm, with best views from Cowes Green.
We encounter an enormous amount of diversity, both geologically and otherwise. For example this morning we were at the Needles and I saw them from an angle I had never seen before. The rain stopped and the sun came out. The Needles were gleaming white and with the huge sea swirling around them it was incredible; I was bewitched. What has been your favourite place to film, and why? The North West coast of Scotland; it’s a wild, unpopulated place. I’ve done a lot of sailing in classic ships and was in the Tall Ships race. Fair Isle is special. Also the East Anglian coast - it is mellow, peaceful and the birdlife is good. You’ve taken the series abroad, to France, Belgium, Sweden and the Netherlands. Do you see the series going overseas more often? I would love to, but it’s not my decision. I would really like to film Northern Spain, and also the New Zealand, Australian and African coasts! But even when we’re abroad, we only tell stories relating to Britain - Coast is a very British story at the moment, and that’s one of its strengths. You have written several books including the story of your epic 17-month journey across Europe on foot, told in Clear Water Rising. Is there something you are still burning to write about?
Send your questions to thehavenmag@cowesyachthaven.com
I’m actually writing one at the moment. It’s a history of the British landscape - from the Ice Age to the present. Hopefully it’ll be finished soon.

Read the sailing instructions carefully and make sure you have any amendments. There are a lot more variables at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week than at most other regattas, so make sure you know which start lines you could be using, what your start sequences are and be aware of exclusion zones, etc.
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
With Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week just around the corner we went to the experts for some advice on how to make the most of the event - whether you are a competitor or a visitor.
Don’t forget to record the sail numbers of the boats that finish immediately before and after you on the line - and then complete your declaration each day!

Keep a very good lookout at all times on the water and don’t forget that you are not the only class on the water. With some 900 boats of all shapes and sizes racing, plus hundreds of spectator boats and members of the public enjoying the Solent, always remember that right of way boats could come at you from completely unexpected directions.
You’ve published a book on the groundbreaking cartographer Gerardus Mercator. Which famous geographer inspires you? It has to be him; he invented the atlas and he devised projection, which is even used by NASA. Is there one big issue to do with the British coastline today? There are several big issues which urgently need addressing. In no particular order they are: 1) climate change - which is leading to the sea level rise 2) the acidification of the oceans and 3) marine life in general - which affects fishing. It has gone critical, although steps are being made. However, I believe that it’s better that people discover these things for themselves rather than it being forced down their throats. I’ve read an article that said that you are committed to not taking flights due to global warming. Is this still something you believe in strongly? This was misquoted. I’ve virtually stopped flying recreationally but I still fly for work! I have cut down basically. I certainly wouldn’t consider myself holier than thou about it though. If you had to choose only one method of getting around on future trips (cycling or walking) which would it be? That would be difficult to choose, but it would be walking! It’s so simple, accessible and spontaneous and it gives the most intense contact with people. Finally, what can we expect in Series 8? It will screen next spring and it is in themes; it’s no longer a geographical journey. The theme in the Cowes episode is ‘Boats’. ‘The Workers Coast’ is another, which is about all the people whose lives depend on the coast. ‘Cliffs’ reveals the secret life of cliffs - and expect something surprising, which involves an abseil down an 80m hole in a cliff, in the dark!

U
nder glorious clear blue skies, the yachts in the marina were dressed overall and hundreds of people gathered at 11am to greet The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh. As she stepped ashore from the tender to the superyacht Leander she was met by our Managing Director, Jon Pridham. The crowd gave her a rousing cheer. To music by a Sea Cadets band Her Majesty made her way to the Haven Events Centre where she met representatives of the following selected charities, including Dame Ellen MacArthur:
The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
This Diamond Jubilee year marks 60 years of the Queen’s reign. There have been celebrations all year, with the highlights on the weekend of 2nd-5th June 2012. What more fitting a place to end the series of UK regional visits made by The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh than the Isle of Wight, the island with so many Royal connections?

dward I bought Carisbrooke Castle and King Charles I was unfortunately incarcerated there. Then, in 1845 Queen Victoria, who was the only other British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee, bought and loved Osborne House; she said “it is impossible to imagine a prettier spot”. Her youngest daughter Princess Beatrice became Governor of the island and holidayed here until her death in 1944. Then her great nephew, the Earl Mountbatten of Burma, became governor of the island.
There are many other more recent connections to Cowes. For example, in 1952, in the same year that the Queen acceded to the throne, The Duke of Edinburgh, with Uffa Fox, came 2nd in a Royal London Yacht Club race, in his boat Coweslip (which is now in the Classic Boat Museum). The Duke also raced in many Cowes Weeks in various classes including his International Dragon Bluebottle, which was presented to The Queen and Duke as a wedding gift by the members of the Island Sailing Club.

On the final day of her tour of Britain, Her Majesty The Queen visited Cowes Yacht Haven.
These organisations share a common goal of encouraging people into sailing and use sailing and water based activities to improve the lives of individuals from all walks of life. Her Majesty was given a hamper of delicious Isle of Wight food by Michelinstarred chef Robert Thompson, including a separate hamper for her corgis! She was also presented with a beautiful glass bowl by Timothy Harris of Isle of Wight Studio Glass. The Lord Lieutenant Maj Gen Martin White gave a speech, thanking them for their attendance. After spending around 40 minutes in the Events Centre, Her Majesty left by car. You can see photos and a video on our Facebook page. Earlier in the day Her Majesty the Queen was welcomed to Cowes by a 21-gun salute from the Royal Yacht Squadron. She formally opened the new Cowes RNLI station. On their walk along Cowes Parade, they Royal party stopped to hear a choir from Cowes Primary School perform a song especially written for her by music teacher Becky Bevan .
