Equine Discussions With Cal Middleton

Proper Use of the Warm-Up Pen One thing that I get a lot of questions about is how to warm up your horse properly before a show. The warm up pen seems to be a source of confusion and sometimes chaos. Here are a few simple rules to follow when warming up horses at a show. 1. Only do things in the warm

up pen that you do at home.

The warm up pen at a show is not the time or place to try new ideas or techniques. Make sure everything you are doing at the show is already working very consistently at home. If the things you are needing to do at the show aren't working well at home, then maybe you should stay home until they are working more consistently, then go to a show. Go get some help if you need it. 2. Focus on your horse only

and stick with your game plan.

Do not worry about what everyone else is doing. I see a lot of people watching another rider, possibly a more experienced rider or trainer doing something, and they instinctively start trying to do it like they do. There is nothing wrong with learning from more experienced riders, but wait until you get home to implement the new ideas. Your horse has enough to stress at shows without you adding new expectations.

when teaching him the maneuvers or whatever it is you are competing at. If you ask your horse to do something a few times in the warm up pen, and it isn't working, it may be the time to put him in his stall and then work on it once you get back home. 4. Stay calm and quiet with

your hands and feet. When you get to a show you will

most likely be a little more excited and/or nervous. This will increase the speed of your hands and feet as well as your brain. Be careful not to transfer that energy to your horse. Focus on reacting slowly and keeping your hands quiet but firm enough to get the job done. Remember that this is all just for fun and the only person that you have to please is you. Nothing to get worried about. A lot of horses are ruined in the warm up pen by people being worried about how they look in front of everyone else. Remember the judge is in the show pen, not the warm up so there really

isn't anyone important watching you anyway. And if you are working with a trainer, they should be there to help you, not judge you. Instead of focusing on what you look like, focus on what you need to do to help your horse get correct. So, the next time you're in the warm up pen getting ready for the show, remember these four rules and go in and have fun. The next time I'll be warming up for a show will be at the CPRHA Firecracker Classic July 3-5 in Lincoln, NE. Hope to see you there. Send your questions to cal@ calmiddleton.com. Until next time ride smarter, not harder. Cal Middleton is a professional horse trainer and non-pro coach who competes at shows on the state and national level. He has won numerous titles including a world championship in Reining at the APHA Congress and a 4th place finish in Jr Working Cow Horse at the ApHC Nationals. Call 816-256-9597.

3. Help your horse without training on him by just reviewing what he already knows.

Prepare your horse and school on him without doing too much. Do not train your horse at the show in the warm up pen like you would at home

Ranch Horse Versatility

Competition With Camaraderie By Al Dunning In these days of fast cars, video games and all sorts of distractions, it may be surprising that in some quarters competing on horse back is undergoing a resurgence. I started showing horses in the 1960’s, and in those days most of the competitors were breeders and notable ranchers. The trainers were ranch hands that performed their daily duties of ranching, roping, separating, herding and doctoring cattle. These were the common jobs of the ranch hands and their valued mounts. Pride of ownership and the diligent honing of their horsemanship skills energized the hard working cowboys to spend the extra hours necessary to earn the privilege to show. They polished up their work tack , groomed their horses and in their best clean jeans headed off to the shows to promote their ranches and the horses they bred. As the years went by more and more of the cowboy trainers became professional trainers, developing their “barns” of affluent customers and expensive horses. The halter horses became bigger and stouter and the pleasure horses became slower and lower. It became difficult to compete without having deep pockets to afford a top trainer and the type of horse it took to succeed. But many of those on the sidelines became discontent with the unnatural gate of the western pleasure horse. Utilitarian value and form-tofunction seemed not to be as important as a horse with a manufactured gait, ridden with lots of silver and glitz. Then some of the exhibitors saw the fun and excitement of other

classes that were gaining popularity, like the working cow horse, which by this time had added an entry level class called Boxing. Other classes like trail and western riding also made the horses move with more forward and natural motion while maneuvering through obstacles. These classes gave exhibitors that were looking for– a place to show in the kinds of classes that offered more meaning to the question, Why am I showing and what does it mean? Classes with cows, obstacles, and maneuvers were the answer. The Ranch Versatility Class came on the scene with the hope of bringing the more natural moving and ranch-type horse to the forefront. This is a multiple class event that takes quite a bit of time to run, usually as much as a full day, if not two. Many of the existing shows already had full schedules and lacked

the time necessary to offer the Ranch Versatility Class in its entirety. Ranch Pleasure (Ranch Riding) was added to some shows and accepted with much enthusiasm by all sorts of exhibitors. The Amateur exhibitor that once showed in allaround classes, but couldn’t afford the time away from work, or the mega-expensive show horse, saw this class as an opportunity to have fun and be able to compete at a different level. The reining horse exhibitors found it a less stressful class for their horses. It was a place to enter the arena, relax and still use some of their reining skills. The working cow horse exhibitors were already a little “ranchy” and found another class to compete in at a slower pace. The Boxing exhibitors found an opportunity to enter the arena and work on their mental and pattern skills. Many other horses also fit into

this new event which sparked fun and camaraderie back into the show arena. The American Quarter Horse Association is currently looking at other options to add more “Ranch” classes into its show schedules because of the outstanding success of the Ranch Pleasure. Of course there are complete Versatility Ranch Horse shows throughout the year in different parts of the country and annual World Championships. (See sidebar below.) I personally foresee masses of exhibitors looking for classes that showcase the horse’s natural way of going and expresses a well trained horse, while also adding in obstacles and maneuvers for a greater challenge. Moreover, I feel horse enthusiasts want to go back to basics. They want to see horses move naturally and be more utilitarian. A large market of exhibitors put a great value on having a fun and spending their

Jay Clements of Dale, Texas, and Seven S Limelight, a 2010 sorrel gelding by CD Lights and out of Seven S Babe by Seven S Zanaday, drag a log in the Ranch Trail Class. hobby time in a fulfilling experience. There’s an old saying, “What goes around, comes around.” I think we are coming back around to the

point of enjoying and loving our horses while being with our friends and family doing something that fills our hearts.

Classes, Shows, World Championships Versatility Ranch Horse encompasses the gamut of western riding disciplines with classes in: • Ranch Riding • Ranch Trail • Ranch Reining • Ranch Cutting • Ranch Cow Work • Ranch Conformation. Divisions include Open, Cowboy, Amateur and Youth. Upcoming AQHA-approved shows are scheduled in August in Montgomery, AL, and Hamilton

and Lubbock, TX. Pueblo, CO, and Amarillo and Vernon, TX, are sites for September shows. October shows are set for Montgomery, AL, Daly City, CA, and Stephenville, TX. The annual Zoetis AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championships will be held in Houston March 2016. See the AQHA website (www.aqha.com) for details on the classes, shows and qualifying points for the World Championships.

Al Dunning has been a professional trainer since 1970 at his Almosta Ranch in Scottsdale, AZ. His expertise in all facets of western events has elevated him to great success in the AQHA, NRHA, NRCHA, and NCHA. He trains, conducts clinics, and consults for ranch development and equestrian planning. www.aldunning.com

By Larry Thornton The Three D Stock Farm of Arlington, TX, has to be heralded as one of the great breeding programs of the American Quarter Horse. The Three D Stock Farm owned by E. Paul Waggoner was home to the famous stallions Poco Bueno, Pretty Buck and Jessie James. Waggoner’s goal for this breeding program was to breed and sell good show horses. He did it through the promotion of the stallions. Poco Bueno became one of the early AQHA Champions and Pretty Buck was a noted show horse; both stallions were named Grand Champions at many of the major shows. Jessie James was sold and thus didn’t make an impact on the Three D Stock Farm except through a few foals. Poco Bueno was the senior sire for the Three D Stock Farm. He was trained and shown by Pine Johnson. Poco Bueno earned six cutting points and 37 halter points in AQHA Shows, and was Grand Champion at Fort Worth in 1947 and Denver in 1948. Poco Bueno was a very successful show horse before the AQHA kept show records. So he was brought out of retirement in the early 1950’s to earn his AQHA Championship points. Poco Bueno was the sire of 38 AQHA Champions, 84 show Register of Merit, 21 Superior Halter Horses and Superior Performance Horses. Poco Bueno was sired by King P-234. King P-234 was owned for most of his career by Jess Hankins. He was sired by Zantanon by Little Joe. Little Joe was sired by Traveler. Zantanon was out of Jeanette by Billy. The dam of King P-234 was Jabalina by Strait Horse by Yellow Jacket. The dam of Jabalina was a Bay Quarter Mare. Many pedigrees show that the Bay Quarter Mare may have been a daughter of Traveler. This would make King P-234 double bred to Page 34

The dam of Miss Taylor was the Eads Mare by Hickory Bill. Hickory Bill was sired by Peter McCue. Hickory Bill was the sire of such horses as Old Sorrel, the foundation sire of the King Ranch breeding program. The goal of the Three D Stock Farm was successful with Poco Bueno and Pretty Buck reinforcing their success as show horses by siring some good show horses. Poco Bueno sired the early AQHA Champions Poco Tivio and Poco

Lena. Pretty Buck sired Snipper W, another early AQHA Champion. All three of these show horses became important cutting horses in the NCHA with Snipper W the 1953 NCHA Open World Champion and Poco Lena earning five NCHA Open Reserve World Championships. Poco Tivio was an NCHA Open Top Ten cutting horse. Poco Tivio and Poco Lena were full brother and sister out of Sheilwin, a Pretty Boy mare that came from the home ranch at Vernon, TX. Snipper W was out of Snipette, a daughter of Blackburn, another stallion standing at the home ranch in Vernon. Pretty Boy was the sire of Pretty Buck and Blackburn and was also the broodmare sire of Sheilwin, dam of Poco Lena and Poco Tivio. Pretty Boy and Blackburn became a very important

cross with Poco Bueno, producing many of Poco Bueno’s top foals including the AQHA Champions Poco Bob, Poco Mona, Poco Champ, Poco Bay, Poco Doll, Poco Speedy, Poco Stampede and Poco Pine. The Waggoner Ranch had a great source of mares from Pretty Boy and Blackburn. But as part of the ongoing breeding program new stallions were being brought in to sire ranch horses. One of those ranch stallions was Pep Up, a King Ranch bred stallion. Pep-Up was sired by Macanudo and out of Petra R2 by Little Richard. Macanudo and Little Richard were sired by Old Sorrel. The dam of Macanudo was Canales Belle. Canales Belle was sired by Roan Clegg by Hickory Bill. Pep Up was foaled in 1941 and turned out with mares in 1943. His first foals came in 1944. They included Buck Up, a colt that would run AA time and earn a racing ROM. Another foal from this crop was Miss Peppy D who produced Doc’s Kitty, the second dam of High Brow Cat, the all time leading sire of NCHA money winners. "The first horse that came in... they ran him

Jimmie Randals of Tucumcari, NM, bought Poco Dell the first son of Shady Dell and Poco Bueno. “I had been interested in cutting, but I had never gotten into cutting,” Randals says. “I had started showing horses in 1951 but I wanted to get my own program started. Poco Bueno was becoming popular at that time and making a pretty good name for himself. “Of course the Fort Worth Stock Show was going strong and I had seen Poco Bueno cut. When he got up to $2,500 I got back in and rode him on up and caught the horse at $2,800.” Randals took his new unproven stallion home to New Mexico, making a short stop in Snyder, TX, to show his Dad the new stallion. The elder Randals wasn't impressed when he heard the purchase price.

One of the great mares bred to Poco Dell was Quo Vadis. She produced six foals by Poco Dell, all point earning performers. Poco Dell went on to become an AQHA Champion with 35 halter points and 15 cutting points. He earned his performance ROM in 1957. His halter wins include the Grand Championship of the New Mexico State Fair. Poco Dell proved to be a very good sire. His foals garnered 18 AQHA Championships, 46 show Register of Merit, 11 Superiors in halter and three Superiors in performance. He is the maternal grandsire of 17 AQHA Champions. Some of Poco Dell’s Superior Halter horses would include Poco Dondi, Dell Tommy, Dell Jiggs, Judy Dell, Chubby Poco Dell, Poco Ra Dell, Madonna Dell, Nunes Cameo, Nunes Debonair Poco Dana, Wise Poco and Poco Jeff. His Superior performance horses include Dell Tommy and Impressive Dell. Both of these horses got their Superior in Western Pleasure. points and three performance points; and last but not least, Madonna Dell, Superior in halter with 202 points and 7.5 performance points. Randals describes Madonna Dell as “the top horse I showed. You couldn't draw a more perfect horse.” The leading point earner out of Madonna Dell was Diamon Dell, an AQHA Champion and Superor Pleasure Horse. Quo Vadis produced Bonita Dondi in 1963. Bonita Dondi was sired by Poco Dondi. This bay mare earned an AQHA Championship with 31 halter points and 16 performance points. She was Register of Merit in performance as well. One of the great halter horses sired by Poco Dell was Nunes Cameo. This mare earned 96 halter points and was named Grand Champion at shows like the San Antonio Livestock Show. She was purchased by E. Paul Waggoner and bred to Poco Bueno. She produced

Fickle Miss earned an AQHA Superior in halter with 120 points. The dam of Poco Violet Hill was Mayflower Daugherty out of Panzarita Daugherty who sold in the 1952 Three D Stock Farm Sale for $650. The second Shady Dell foal was Poco Shade, another son of Poco Bueno. Poco Shade earned two halter points and 11.5 performance points earning an ROM in the arena. Poco Shade sold for $400 in the Waggoner Sale. He sired 18 AQHA performers with eight ROM and three AQHA Champions. His AQHA Champions were Rags Riches, Poco Shady Whiz and Poco Shady Ed. The daughters of Poco Shade produced 17 ROM with seven AQHA Championships in the open, youth and amateur divisions. The leading point earners were Go With Skip and Devious Skip, full brothers sired by Skip Sioux. Go With Skip earned 899 points with two Superior Halter Awards and a Superior in

A Pedigree Dilemma – Pep Up or Old Mac?

One of the long time puzzles that confronted me as a pedigree researcher was the pedigree of Pep Up. When I first did Pep Up’s pedigree from the AQHA Stud Book, I found that he was sired by Peppy P-212 and out of the mare Canalita by Solis. Then I started finding pedigrees showing that Pep Up was sired by Macanudo and out of Petra R2 by Little Richard. Today the official AQHA pedigree on Pep Up is the Macanudo/Petra R2 pedigree. The AQHA registration file on Pep Up from the AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum shows why this pedigree change came about. The file starts with a letter dated July 23, 1957, from B. F. Phillips, Jr. to the AQHA employee Ralph E. Morrison. Phillips wrote: “In looking over the tabulated pedigrees that you supplied me on my recent trip to Amarillo, there seems to be an error in the pedigree of Pep-Up, P-2100. It was always my understanding that this horse was sired by Peppy P-212.” What Phillips got was the official pedigree that showed Pep Up to be sired by Macanudo and out of Petra R2. Morrison replied to Phillips: “I am returning to you the pedigree form on Pep Up, AQHA P-2100 and also a pedigree form on Old Mac, AQHA #2162.” The Morrison letter continued, “This is the story as told to me by Bob Anderson, and the facts as confirmed by Doctor Northway of the King Ranch, concerning these two stallions which the Waggoner’s bought from the King Ranch. “At the time the colts were unloaded in the corrals at the Waggoner Ranch, the weather was very bad and the corrals very muddy. The cowboys, from the first day, got the two individuals mixed up and their true identification became an error. Actually, the horse they called Old Mac was by Peppy. Old Mac was born in March 1941, and we have the usual King Ranch pedigree on one of their large yellow sheets of paper. Old Mac shows to have been a sorrel stallion, branded with a “W” on the left tail set and branded with another “W” on the right rear leg, ‘possibly on the inside from the hock area up.’ This was a special brand by an outstanding Mexican cowboy brander who took great pride in branding the horses for Doctor Northway. Therefore, Old Mac should be carried as sired by Peppy, by Little Richard, by Old Sorrel, and dammed by Canalita (roan mare ridden by Lauro), by Solis, by Old Sorrel. The second dam is a roan Quarter mare by Hickory Bill. This information, of course, will show on the pedigree form which I am sending to you. Old Mac died in the latter part of 1948 or 1949. “On the stallion Pep Up the King Ranch pedigree shows the colt was sired by Macanudo, by Old Sorrel, by Hickory Bill, and dammed by a mare called Petra, by Little Richard, by Old Sorrel, and the second dam was a mare by Lucky Mose. From the two pedigrees, you can readily see that these two stallions were very

Western Pleasure. Devious Skip earned 926.5 AQHA points with five AQHA Championships in the open, youth and amateur divisions. He also earned four AQHA Superiors in halter in the open, youth and amateur divisions. He was an AQHA Youth Supreme Champion. The leading NCHA performer out of a daughter of Poco Shade is Shaboon. This horse by Boon Bar earned $70,488.50 in the NCHA. Bill and Rena Howard bought three horses at the 1952 sale: Poco Deuce, Poco Tiny and Shady Dell. Poco Tiny was the weanling foal with Shady Dell. She was an unshown full sister to Poco Dell that sold in the sale for $280. Randals later bought Poco Tiny for $4,000. She died on the Randals Ranch before her true value as a broodmare

Shady Dell left the Three D Stock Farm carrying Poco Willy, another full brother to Poco Dell. Poco Willy was the second AQHA Champion out of Shady Dell, earning 47 halter points and 14 performance points. Poco Willy sired a number of ROM performers and several AQHA Champions. His AQHA Champions include Poco Handy Boy, Poco Harmon and Poco Minute. Poco Willy was the sire of Willoa. She is the dam of the 1980 NCHA Open World Champion Doc Page 38

The foal produced from this mating was Poco Deuce Jr, an AQHA Champion. He earned 27 halter points and 12.5 performance points. Poco Deuce Jr sired a number of ROM performers including the

Eads Mare by Hickory Bill. Shady Dell was double bred to Old Sorrel by Hickory Bill. Pep Up was sired by Macanudo by Old Sorrel by Hickory Bill. Macanudo was also out of Canales Belle by Roan Clegg by Hickory Bill. The dam of Pep Up was Petra R2 by Little Richard P-17 by Old Sorrel by Hickory Bill. This results in a breeding pattern of 3 X 4 X 4 to Hickory Bill in the pedigree of Pep Up. The foals of Shady Dell

The mating of Poco Bueno and Shady Dell by Pep Up provides an interesting nick, a nick being the mating of a stallion or stallion line with a mare or group of mares that produces outstanding foals. With a nick there is a blood affinity between the stallion and mares, a common ancestor or ancestors between the stallion and mare. Poco Bueno carried the blood of Hickory Bill through his dam Miss Taylor. Miss Taylor was out of the

Compania was Omblongana Da Javiel by Cardenal by Old Sorrel. This cross also produced several good show horses like Poco Husky and Poco Amber Fern. This cross also produced Poco Ojos Grande, some say the last breeding son of Poco Bueno. Shady Dell changed sire lines for her 1955 foal. She produced Shady Reed by Logan's Bobby Reed. Shady Reed was a Register of Merit show horse with 5 performance points and 3 halter points. Shady Dell stayed with Logan's Bobby Reed for her 1956 foal, the AQHA Champion Snipper Reed. Logan’s Bobby Reed was sired by Reed McCue by Joe Reed P-3. His dam was Logan’s Ruby by Dr. Blue Eyes by A D Reed by Peter McCue. Logan’s Bobby Reed was the sire of Logan’s Miss Lue. Logan’s Miss Lue was the second dam of the AQHA Hall of Fame stallion The Investor. Snipper Reed earned 40.5 performance points and 26 halter points. He shows the versatility of the line with points earned in working cow horse, reining, tiedown roping, barrel racing, western pleasure, pole bending and western riding. Snipper Reed is the sire of such noted horse as Snipper's Sarah, a phenomenal show horse with six Superior Awards in halter and performance and an AQHA Performance Championship. She was a two time AQHA Youth World Champion Open Aged Halter Mare and an AQHA World Champion Aged Halter Mare. Snipper Reed was the sire of Poco Acres, an AQHA Champion with 23 halter and 27 performance points. closely related from a genetic standpoint, and Mr. Anderson suggested that since Old Mac had died at such an early age and that the colt, Pep Up, was sold as a non-breeder several years ago to Otis Gafford that we not change the names of these two stallions less we cause a lot of confusion.” It is apparent from the correspondence in the AQHA file on Pep Up that by leaving Old Mac as Pep Up and Pep Up as Old Mac was the easiest thing to do to prevent any further confusion. So the names got changed but the pedigrees didn’t. The horse we know today as Pep Up (Old Mac) was sired by Macanudo and the horse we know today as Old Mac (Pep Up) was sired by Peppy P-212. The Journal Of Heredity article about the inbreeding on the King Ranch called “The Development of a Superior Family in the Quarter Horse” shows that in the list of foals sired by Peppy P-212 there is a foal out of Canalita. The year this foal was born isn’t given, but it was 1941 or 1942. In the list of foals sired by Macanudo in this article Petra R2 is not listed as one of his mares. Thus more confusion. But there was a #2 mare that was out of Old Castilla, a thoroughbred mare. She may have been Petra R2. The “R” shows she was a Little Richard mare. This list of mares includes five more daughters of Little Richard bred to Macanudo. Old Mac (1942) died on the Waggoner Ranch after siring only three foal crops with nine registered foals. He sired four performers with one point earner that earned two halter points. His daughters fared a little better producing foals that earned 177 halter points and 51 performance points with three ROMs and two AQHA Champions. The AQHA Champions were Joe’s Halo and Flyaway Mac. This isn’t a bad record considering that Old Mac sired seven daughters that produced only 29 foals. When Pep Up was injured and the Waggoner Ranch decided to put the horse down, Otis Gafford stepped in and offered to buy the horse. When Gafford bought Pep Up, he wanted verification of the horse’s pedigree. That got the ball rolling and the clarification of the names and their respective pedigrees. After getting the description of the two colts, Gafford wrote to Ralph Morrison: “Think this is what we have been looking for, and am sure this will clear everything up. With these pedigrees and description of the colts, I think everyone can readily see the horse I have is sired by Macanudo. As my horse is the sorrel and the other one was a roan.” Gafford left it in Morrison’s hands as how to handle the clarification. Pep Up became Old Mac and Old Mac became Pep Up. It has to be noted that Pep Up (Old Mac) sired Peppy Belle, in 1955 while he was owned by Otis Gifford. She was the dam of Peppy San and Mr San Peppy, the great sires and NCHA Open World Champions. Thank you Mr. Gafford for saving his life and giving us another great mare in Peppy Belle. Western Pleasure Horse. Some of the other noted horses sired by Poco Acres include Coaster Acres, a Superior Western Pleasure Horse; Doc’s Poco Candy, an AQHA Superior Halter Horse, and Acres

dam of Poco Acres is Juanita Dell by Poco Dell who is out of Shady Dell. Shady Dell returned to Poco Deuce's court in 1956 to produce the 1957 foal Poco Pep Up. Poco Pep Up was the fifth AQHA Champion produced by Shady Dell. He earned 14 halter points and 23 performance. Shady Dell produced two more foals by Poco Deuce. Neither earned any AQHA points. The nick of Poco Deuce and Shady Dell gives us a breeding pattern of 5 X 5 X 6 X 6 to Hickory Bill as its blood affinity. Shady Joe was an unshown son of Shady Dell that was foaled in 1960. Shady Joe was sired by Red Joe Jones. Then in 1961 Shady Dell was sold to Bill McNabb and she produced Shady Chic in 1961 sired by Chicaro Blue. Shady Chic earned 18 halter points and one performance point. Poco Rafter by R. Joking was the next foal. He earned no AQHA points. Shady Van and Shady Vandal were foaled in 1963 and 1964. Shady Van earned 1 halter point. The last two foals out of Shady Dell were Double Shady and Double Shad, both by Double Drift. Double Shady earned one AQHA youth halter point and one AQHA youth performance point. Shady Dell produced her last foal for McNabb. She was sold to Jody Carsello in about 1967 and then again in 1970 to Barbara Struthers but produced no foals for either of them. Shady Dell became one of the great producers after a modest beginning on the famed Waggoner Ranch. Her selection to the Poco Bueno broodmare band gave her the opportunity to excel as a broodmare. She continued her producing ways after leaving the Three D Stock Farm. Her continued success made her one of our Mares With More.

Vet Call

Shoulders and Withers Pain – More Common Than We Think By Jay Merriam, DVM, MS The athlete’s shoulders are often the most visible and obvious place we look when first evaluating the potential fitness or strength of the horse or human before us. A stud led out for show or exam is often puffed up and intent and the shoulders and neck carriage are the first things we see and comment on. After a quick glance there, it’s on to the feet and lower legs as sources of potential pain or unsoundness. We have all learned our lesson over the years, that 80 percent of all lameness occurs from the fetlocks down, almost regardless of the discipline or tasks the horse is being asked to perform. That leaves 20 to 30 percent of lameness as potentially originating from higher up. If you include shoulder and upper back pain as occurring simultaneously with lower leg pain as a “side effect,” which it certainly is, then

Muscles of the shoulder form a large sling, holding the leg to the body. the real significance of the shoulders in lameness, or more importantly in poor performance, comes into focus. Looking at the shoulder/withers as a unit, which it is, we see how it plays out as part of the whole forelimb lameness complex.

Anatomy

The shoulder in most animals differs a lot from ours; horses, who have evolved to require speed for

Page 44

escape, are especially well designed. First, unlike us, there is no connection between the front limb and the skeleton. No bony attachment means no restrictions on flexions, extensions and some lateral movement. The ability to change

extension of the forelimbs. This is critical in almost any kind of athletic endeavor. Dressage judges always look for this, and so did the old cavalry officers when picking studs. A short humerus places the front limbs well in front of the body

The withers are tall and prominent on the skeleton, but heavily wrapped by ligaments and muscles. speed, direction and stance is considerably quicker than our own. (They don’t have a rotator cuff, so their golf swing is never painful!) And arthritis in their shoulders is very rare. The horse shoulder joint has a lot more independence than humans. On the other hand, it is bearing weight constantly and that’s where the stress comes in–there is no skeleton to absorb some concussion. There is, however, a huge, angled set of shock absorbers- the muscles, ligaments and muscle fibers, to catch the animals weight when needed. Another area often discussed when evaluating shoulder conformation is the so-called shoulder angle. The more “open” the angle between the shoulder blade and the humerus, the better the

essential for quick changes of direction and overall athleticism. An angle of 90 degrees or more will meet this standard.

The Withers

Probably the most visible and least understood part of the equine anatomy, the withers, is often just a convenient saddle rack, hand hold or even an annoyance. It’s what keeps us from slipping to one side or the other as we work or ride, and yet is considered less important than a correct foot or knee. It’s really an important part of the package, not to be ignored once hidden by a saddle and heavy blanket. In the illustration of the horse, it’s clear the connection of withers to shoulder is huge. The trapezius muscle group ties into the scapular

muscles and wraps the whole unit to the base of the neck. There’s no way to separate one from the other. And yet often we see judges giving a horse with the bulldog chest and forearms a higher score than a less bulked up, more svelte animal. I know which one I want under me when it’s time to maneuver! Some of the conditions I see and treat as an equine vet include: • kissing spines • distortion of the wither • wither fracture • scapular muscle de-nervation Kissing spines is a common and overused term that can refer to pain of the withers or back that occurs between the dorsal spines of the vertebrae. It is often diagnosed and treated without any real basis other than pain on palpation or resistance to saddling. If your horse has ever just frozen in place as the girth was tightened, consider that you have just put extreme pressure on a very important muscle/nerve pathway, the trapezius muscle, as well as the actual bony wither. Distortion of the withers, and subsequently the shoulders, is a common finding, if you take the time to look. There is almost always asymmetry of the shoulders visible from the top or front. Horses tend to be as right or left-handed as we are, and there is also a natural tendency to over develop the right side. This doesn’t always have any clinical significance but is often the difference between a winner and a Champion in the work arena. Fractured withers are usually the result of a flip or fall. Slow motion videos of horses that rear and then fall usually show the withers hitting the ground first, absorbing the full weight and mass of the body. Such injuries can be fatal, but in most cases are not, and are often totally

overlooked if the injury occurred in the pasture, coming to light only after the horse shows pain or resentment on saddling. The fractures can be seen on x-ray in some cases and on simple exam from above in others. Long term recovery is excellent in most cases, but saddle and tack adjustments need to be made. This is a pretty simple fix and one we can do with only a little time spent analyzing and measuring.

This x-ray shows several broken spines bones sustained in a flip. Scapular nerve injury used to be called “sweeny” for some reason and was associated with pressure from

the collar or hames on work horses. It showed itself as a loss of muscle on the anterior edge of the shoulder and a resultant inability to lift or extend the leg. In extreme cases there was an actual drop in the shoulder and the horse would stand as if rooted to the ground. The nerves of the scapula can be damaged separately, so there are varying degrees of injury. Most often a kick or some other direct blow are involved. Prognosis is difficult to assess initially, but if there is an actual severance of the nerve it is permanent. If not, anti-inflammatory meds, acupuncture and rest will suffice. Breeder Profile

KeSa Quarter Horses—'Woven' from the Bloodlines of Blue Valentine, Driftwood & Hancock By Adele Lind-Nichols KeSa Quarter Horses’ Sam Schoultz refers to the shape of a pyramid to illustrate a solid breeding program. Certain traits, such as a trainable mind and solid conformation, are the most important and must be strong to form a broad and lasting foundation. Color is closer to the top of the pyramid; while it can be a nice bonus at times, it is not a necessary trait for a strong foundation. Building a durable base that will stand the test of time has been the focus of KeSa Quarter Horses from the very beginning. Sam Schoultz was raised near Casper, WY, where much of his family was in the business of ranching. After attending Casper College, Sam went to Colorado State University where he

studied genetics. He fondly remembers a class where students were able to put together their own cattle breeding program using a computer model. Now, keep in mind, this was in the mid 1960’s and using a computer for anything was a big deal! While at CSU, Schoultz began to notice the bloodlines of Driftwood,

While both are highly admired, Johnston and Before including a new mare or stallion in Merritt had different ways of going about the program, Schoultz studies the mind their programs, but both and conformation of the animal. believed in proven working lines. progress. One of Schoultz and Matzner’s proudest moments came at the 2011 AQHA World Show, where four KeSa bred horses were represented at one time–and all four horses characterized a different part of the KeSa breeding program. Schoultz believes in the merit of the year-end highpoint standings as these horses represent the “road warriors” of the breed. They must have the conformation to not break down over the season, the mind to not show stress while being hauled, and they must also show versatility. KeSa horses have accumulated 3,000 AQHA points in the Open division in

These horses can compete in the toughest open AQHA classes, as well as being dependable rodeo and using horses, yet quiet enough to be a dependable family using horse,” Jones says. “KESA horses have great minds and trainability, and can handle the stress of the show ring, and yet stay sound, a big plus. These horses are consistent in their training and retention, and have good quality overall. Going forward, Schoultz and Matzner will continue promoting the KeSa bloodlines and proving that these foundation bred horses can compete at the highest levels, with the demeanor and mind it takes to win, the structure, good legs and feet for longevity, and the versatility to do any job. With the recent sales of a Mr Fritz Wood and another Mr Junewood to buyers in Brazil, Schoultz feels this may be the “opening of a door”–recognition of the KeSa bloodlines in South America. He is excited about the possibilities in other countries. KeSa has a strong working relationship with Colorado State University, where Schoultz serves on the Equine Reproduction Laboratory Advisory Board to provide valuable input on research, outreach and educational programs. KeSa often hosts tours for CSU equine reproduction classes and offers internships and work study programs for CSU Equine Sciences students.

In addition to Mr Junewood, KeSa stallion Blue Fox Hancock (Leo Hancock Hayes by Blue Valentine X Fox Coup by Plenty Try) is an AQHA Champion with 722 AQHA Open Points to date. He has won more awards than any high percentage Blue Valentine and his youngsters are following in his footsteps, winning in the roping events. Also, Mr Fritz Wood (Mr Junewood by Wayward Ike X Fritz Lovelady by China Fritz) currently has earned 400+ AQHA points in heading, heeling, calf roping and performance halter events. In April 2015, The Quarter Horse Journal listed KeSa as one of the top 10 breeders of performance point earners. Luke Jones, professional trainer, multiple winner of AQHA World Shows, and high point winners concurs. “I have ridden enough KESA horses for enough years, that I can verify the following KeSa quarter horses are bred for strong statements: conformation, good minds and versatility.

Leo’s Question combines two branches of the Himyar family of thoroughbreds and quarter horses. They are the Plaudit and Domino lines, both sons of Himyar. Joe Reed II was the sire of Leo. Joe Reed II was the Champion Quarter Running Stallion of 194243. Joe Reed P-3 was the sire of Joe Reed II. Joe Reed P-3 was sired by Joe Blair, a thoroughbred out of Della Moore, a famous Cajun-bred running mare that came to Texas from Louisiana. Joe Blair was sired by Bonnie Joe. Della Moore was sired by the famous Cajun-bred running horse Old D. J. The dam of Joe Reed II was Nellene. The blood of Domino in Leo comes from Nellene. Nellene was sired by Fleeting Time. Fleeting Time was sired by High Time who carried three crosses to Domino. The sire of High Time was Ultimus by Commando by Domino. The dam of Ultimus was Running Stream by Domino. The dam of High Time was Noonday by Domino. This gives High Time a 3 X 3 X 2 linebreeding pattern to Domino. Nellene was out of Little Red Nell. Little Red Nell was sired by Brown Billy. Her dam was Red Nell. The dam of Leo was Little Fanny by Joe Reed P-3 which makes Leo 2 X 2 inbred to Joe Reed P-3. Little Fanny was out of Fanny Ashwell, who was sired by the thoroughbred Ashwell by *Alloway. The dam of Ashwell was Melton Mowbray. Fanny Richardson was the dam of Fanny Ashwell. The sire of Fanny Richardson was unknown and her dam was Sister Fanny. The Plaudit side of the Himyar family comes through Question Mark. Question Mark was the sire of Questionaire’s Miss, the dam of Leo’s Question. Question Mark was a world class quarter running horse that earned much of his prestige as a racehorse when he defeated the great

Rockingham wrote that the race with Shue Fly was at a half mile. Question Mark not only won the race, but did it after breaking a pastern joint. It was Question Mark’s last race, a race won on heart and courage. Rockingham says that Question Mark was also a good halter horse, a Grand Champion at shows like Fort Worth, Tulsa and Denver. (On a side note: Montague Rockingham was the famous

Western writer Nelson Nye. Rockingham wrote under several names during this time period. He is the author of such great quarter horse reference books as The Complete Book Of The Quarter Horse.) Question Mark was sired by the quarter horse Plaudit. Plaudit was sired by the thoroughbred King Plaudit. King Plaudit was sired by Plaudit, a Kentucky Derby winner. The thoroughbred Plaudit was a son of Himyar which makes Domino and Plaudit paternal half brothers. The dam of Question Mark was Pepito by Kenward, a thoroughbred. The dam of Pepito was Phyllis F. The last two foals produced in this cross were Bird Quest and Squier’s Warbird. Squier’s Warbird has 17 AQHA open halter points, 14 youth halter points and three youth working points. With the success of War Leo and his brothers and sisters, Leo’s Question and War Bird have proven over the years to be one of the great nicks in the quarter horse breed. War Bird’s pedigree offers some insight into this nicking pattern. War Bird was sired by War Star. War Star was by Oklahoma Star Jr. by Oklahoma Star P-6. The dam of War Bird was Star Bird by Oklahoma Star P-6. This makes War Bird 3 X 2 inbred to Oklahoma Star P-6. War Star is also linebred to the great mare Babe Dawson. Oklahoma Star Jr. is out of Babe Dawson. The dam of War Star is Sheridina, whose dam is Quarter Lady. Quarter Lady is out of Pretty Lady, whose dam is Babe Dawson. Pretty Lady is by Old Red Buck. Star Bird (dam of War Bird) is out of Fleet by Old Red Buck. Old Red Buck is out of Pet

Dawson. The mating of Leo’s Question with War Bird reinforces the success Leo had when crossed with Oklahoma Star mares. Leo was a very good cross on Oklahoma Star with Miss Meyers and Holey Sox serving as prime examples. The tie between Leo and Oklahoma Star is an interesting one from the standpoint of their pedigrees. Leo was a great great grandson of Bonnie Joe, the sire of Joe Blair. Cutthroat was the dam of Oklahoma Star. She was reported to be a daughter of Bonnie Joe. Thus there is a tie between Leo and Oklahoma Star. This tie is called a blood affinity. Many nicks have a blood affinity between the stallion and mare. This theory becomes complicated by the fact that some feel Cutthroat was a Missouri Mike bred mare. Babe Dawson was a Missouri Mike bred mare, providing a tie between Oklahoma Star and Babe Dawson, if Cutthroat was a Missouri Mike bred mare. Oklahoma Star and Babe Dawson was a good nick as well. The disputed pedigree of Cutthroat offers some interesting food for thought on the nicking pattern of Leo’s Question and War Bird. Mr Gun Smoke provides another interesting tie between Leo’s Question and Oklahoma Star. The dam of Mr Gun Smoke is Kansas Cindy by Kansas Star. Kansas Star is 2 X 2 inbred to Oklahoma Star, making Mr Gun Smoke 5 X 4 X 4 X 4 linebred to Oklahoma Star. Several foals out of Kansas Cindy show that the pedigree of Mr Gun Smoke with its Leo’s Question/ Oklahoma Star breeding was no fluke. Price’s Smokey Leo was a full brother to Mr Gun Smoke. This stallion earned 29 AQHA cutting points and was an AQHA World Show Finalist. He earned his NCHA

Certificate of Ability and $8,408 in cutting. Kansas Dillon was an NCHA Certificate of Ability winner with $5,900 in earnings and two AQHA performance points. He was a full brother to Price’s Smokey Leo and Mr Gun Smoke. Leo’s Lightfoot was a son of Leo’s Question that was out of Kansas Cindy making him a 3/4 brother to Mr Gun Smoke. Leo’s Lightfoot earned 37 AQHA cutting points and $1,776 in NCHA money. Another 3/4 sister to Mr Gun Smoke was Price’s Cindy Leo. Price’s Cindy Leo, sired by Leo Matador, a son of Rondo Leo, was the dam of several top cutting horses

including Sonitas Cindy, with earnings of $55,000, and Cindy Solano, with earnings of $7,427. Leo’s Question sent several runners to the track. His AAA rated runners were She’s A Leo, Van’s Dumpy and Baldy Pete. Baldy Pete appears to have been a very sound race horse. He started 196 times with 30 wins, 29 seconds and 17 thirds. He earned $31,185 and a Superior in racing. His speed index was a 93. Nita Adella was another ROM runner, rated AA. The most interesting part of Baldy Pete and Nita Adella are their pedigrees. Baldy Pete was out of Miss Joe Blair (TB) Joe Reed P-3 Della Moore

Doolette. The mother of Miss Doolette was Questionette, a daughter of Questionaire’s Miss. (Dam of Leo’s Question.) This makes Baldy Pete 2 X 3 inbred to Questionaire’s Miss. Nita Adella was out of Questionette, making Nita Adella 2 X 2 inbred to Questionaire’s Miss. Baldy Pete’s dam was sired by Bill Doolin by Chicaro Bill. The dam of Bill Doolin was Beggar Peaches, out of Peaches, an Oklahoma Star/Babe Dawson mare. Cutter Leo and Cutter Question were full brothers out of Dusty Queen. Cutter Leo was an AQHA Champion with a Superior in cutting and he was an NCHA Bronze Award winner. Cutter Question was an NCHA Silver Award winner with $135,325 in earnings. Dusty Queen was sired by Dust Storm by Billy Clegg. The dam of Dusty Queen was

Dixie Queen by Tom Benear. Tom Benear was sired by Tommy Clegg and out of Dixie Beach. Tom Benear was a full brother in blood to Bert P-227. Dixie Beach was a full sister to Lady Coolidge, the dam of Bert. Tommy Clegg was the sire of Bert P-227. The Wilkins’ daughter, Becky, was an AJQHA World Show Finalist with Mr Bart Question. This good gelding earned 24 AQHA Cutting points and was a Quarter Horse Association of Nebraska High Point Senior Cutting Horse. His dam was Lady Jo Barton, a daughter of Sir Barton by Spot Cash. Spot Cash was sired by Skipper W and out of Southern Queen. Southern Queen was sired by Brujo a son of Plaudit. The dam of Sir Barton was Skipadoo by Skipper W. The dam of Skipadoo was Miss Helen by Plaudit. This

makes Mr Bart Question 4 X 6 X 5 linebred to Plaudit. The dam of Lady Jo Barton was Lady Jo Bob. This mare was sired by Bobby Wiemer by Bert, the full brother in blood to Torn Benear. The dam of Lady Jo Bob was V’s Lady Jo by Little Jodie, who was out of Dixie Beach. This makes Lady Jo Bob linebred to the full sisters, Dixie Beach and Lady Coolidge. The mating of Star Cooper with Leo’s Question is another cross along these lines. Star Cooper was an AQHA Champion with 15 halter points, 48 cutting points, 23 reining points, 1.5 western riding points and 6.5 western pleasure points. She had an NCHA Certificate of Ability. She was the dam of Cooper’s Query by Leo’s Question. Cooper’s Query had 34 AQHA open and youth performance points. Star Cooper was by Star Tona by Star Deck. Star Deck was sired by Oklahoma Star P-6. The dam of Star Tona was Blanche’s Tona by Tommy Clegg, the sire of Tom Benear and Bert. The dam of Star Cooper was Miss Cooper 53, who was out of Smokey Cooper by Nicky. Nicky was by Sheik P-11. Sheik was the sire of Nick, the grandsire of Hank Wiescamp’s stallion Skipper W. The sire of Miss Cooper 53 was Red Waggoner. Red Waggoner was sired by Blackburn by Yellow Jacket. Yellow Jacket was the sire of Cowboy P~12, the broodmare sire of Skipper W. Skipper W was the sire of Spot Cash. Wilkins stood Leo’s Question for 16 years and in that time, he put together a band of Leo’s Question broodmares. When the Doc Bar’s came on the scene, Wilkins decided it was time to cross his Leo’s Question daughters with a son of Doc Bar. So he bought Doc’s Jack Sprat. His goal was a Doc Bar/King/ Leo cross. Doc’s Jack Sprat became an

Page 62

AQHA Champion with 15 halter points, 14 western pleasure points and 29 cutting points. His NCHA record included $3,069 in earnings. He was an NCHA Derby Semi-finalist. Doc’s Jack Sprat was sired by Doc Bar. Doc’s Jack Sprat was out of a linebred King P-234 mare named Pura Fina, by Puro Tivio, Puro Tivio was sired by Poco Tivio by Poco Bueno by King. The dam of Puro Tivio was Red Jane C, a full sister to Poco Bueno. The dam of Pura Fina was Handy Annie by King P-234. This made Pura Fina 4 X 3 X 2 linebred King. One of the interesting facets of the success of Doc’s Jack Sprat and the Leo’s Question mares is that nonpros showed them. Of course, the Wilkins boys Bill, Jim and Mike lead the list of non-pros showing these great horses. Some of the top nonpro event horses to come out of this cross are Jae Bar Curt, 1982 NCHA Non-Pro Classic Finalist; Jae Bar Fame, NCHA Non-Pro Super Stakes Finalist; Jae Bar Gaby, 1987 Kansas AM/Non-Pro Tournament $25,000 Champion, and Jae Bar Donna, CHAN Non-Pro Futurity Champion. Leading the way for the Doc’s Jack Sprat/Leo’s Question cross is Jae Bar Fletch who turned out to be one of the great cutting horses of all time. He was the NCHA Open World Champion Cutting Horse in 1989; the AQHA World Champion Senior Cutting Horse in 1985, and he helped carry Ernest Cannon to a Non-Pro World Championship in 1991. This great cutter was inducted into the NCHA Hall of Fame with earnings of $349,401. Jae Bar Maise took Debbie Patterson to an NCHA Non-Pro World Championship in 1987. This mare is a full sister to Jae Bar Fletch. She is the second leading money earner sired by Doc’s Jack Sprat with earnings of $173,692.

Page 63

Jae Bar Lena by Leo’s Question is the dam of these two good cutters. Her dam is Royal Bonita by Royal King by King. The dam or Royal Bonita is Jal, who is out of a daughter of King P-234. This makes Jae Bar Fletch and Jae Bar Maise 6 X 5 X 4 X 4 X 5 linebred to King P-234.

“They have tremendous physical ability and staying power. They’ve got so much heart that you just cannot ride them down. You just can’t wear them out. If you’ve got a chore that requires all day, they’re with you all day..." John Wilkins, describing Leo and Jae Bar Camie is sired by Leo’s Question and out of Llaheh Queen, a daughter of Dusty Queen. This mare is the dam of Jae Bar Gaby, winner of $138,057 and the third leading money winner sired by Doe’s Jack Sprat and out of a Leo’s Question daughter. Jae Bar Mina was a good cutter by Doc’s Jack Sprat that was out of Miss Lou Leo, a full sister to Jae Bar Camie. Jae Bar Mina won $64,051 in cutting. Jae Bar Kori, a full sister to Jae Bar Mina, won in excess of $11,000 and 19 AQHA performance

points. Miss Leo Le was a full sister to Miss Lou Leo and Jae Bar Camie. Miss Leo Le was the dam of Jae Bar Marco, winner of $43,912. One of the first mares bred to Doc’s Jack Sprat was Leo’s Redonda by Leo’s Question. This mare was out of Missajo Dexter, a 3/4 sister to the famous Cutter Bill. Leo’s Redonda shows the versatility of the cross. She was the dam of Jae Bar Cass, who earned 32 halter points, and Jae Bar Fame, winner of $133,848 in cutting. Jae Bar Fame is the fourth highest money winner sired by Doc’s Jack Sprat and out of a Leo’s Question daughter. Jae Bar Gali was another cutter from this cross that earned $56,678 in cutting. She was an NCHA Non-Pro Classic Champion. Jae Bar Jane by Leo’s Question was unshown due to an injury. Her dam was Star Cooper. The first foal out of Jae Bar Jane was Jae Bar Christy and she reinforces the versatility that came out of this cross. Jae Bar Christy was an NCHA money earner and an AQHA World Show qualifier. She earned 46 AQHA points in working cow horse, reining and heeling. Supreme Question was a 3/4 sister to Jae Bar Jane. She was sired by Leo’s Question and out of Miss Cooper 53, the dam of Star Cooper. Supreme Question was the dam of Jae Bar Darcie, the first Futurity winner sired by Doc’s Jack Sprat. In addition, Supreme Question was the dam of several other money earners like Jae Bar Megan, Jae Bar Fawn and Jae Bar Pamela. Supreme Question and her daughter Jae Bar Pamela demonstrate the influence of Leo’s Question in today’s performance horses. Jae Bar Pamela is the dam of a number of performers, including Zee Dually, winner of $202,891, and Fuego Del Corazon, winner of Continued on page 69 THE WORKING HORSE • NOVEMBER 2006

Healing Horses with Herbs

Asking the Right Question By Patrick Jones, DVM Silver Lining Herbs People are discovering, more and more, that modern Western medicine doesn't have all the answers. It's my belief that the principle reason they don't have more answers is because they are asking the wrong question! The entire basis of modern medical training and practice revolves around one question. It's the first question we are asked by our veterinarian in the examination room and the only question that receives any real attention: “What's wrong with them?”

a diagnosis of eczema. The skin condition had started several months previous to our meeting as a small dry spot behind the dog’s ear. Three months later, it had become a truly horrific scaly mess covering her neck. She had consulted with several different veterinarians. When she was asked, “What's wrong with your dog,” the answer was always, “A nasty case of eczema.”Antibiotics were prescribed to kill the bacterial pathogens and corticosteroids to eliminate the inflammation. As the dogs condition worsened,

This question isn't a bad one certainly. They do need to know what an animal’s symptoms are and why they have come to see them; but the question is flawed. The problem with asking "What's wrong with them?" is that it implies that the symptom is the problem. This, of course, leads naturally to the fallacious conclusion that making the symptom go away equates with curing or healing the disease. I would propose that there is a much better question: “Why is something wrong with them?” This is a very different question that leads, by its very nature, to very different answers. I recently had a young woman bring her dog in for an herbal consultation. She had been to several veterinarians and received from them

the veterinarian continued asking the same question and arriving at the same answer. They tried various variations on a theme with their antibiotics and steroids but nothing seemed to help. In fact, her condition became alarmingly worse. When the young lady came to see me, I visited with her for about an hour. As we visited, I tried to find answers to the following questions: “What has changed in your dog’s life that has made her so susceptible to this condition? Why, even with pharmaceutical intervention, can your dog’s body not heal itself from this condition? What is the source of your dog’s dis-ease?” In other words, “Why is something wrong with your dog?” In the course of our conversation I learned that the young ladies dog

was stressed. Eating poor food and, because of a recent divorce, suffering some neglect less attention, infrequent exercise, longer hours spent alone. In the midst of all this the dis-ease had taken its place. I recommended she get her dog better food. I suggested some herbs that might be helpful: Silver Lining Herbs’ 20 Keep Cool, 27 Liver Support, and 37 Kidney Support. Interestingly, not one of those herbs has any anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial properties. She came back about a month later to show me her dogs’ skin. It was beautiful and smooth without a trace of dryness or scales. She finally got the answers she needed, but only when we asked the right question. The same pattern applies to our horses. Often what we see as a symptom – lameness, lethargy, pain – can have its cause in a variety of areas. So before determining how to treat the symptoms, it would be wise to determine “why is something wrong with your horse.” Dr. Jones is the staff veterinarian for Silver Lining Herbs.

Smart Little Jaebar is the sire of Jaebars Miss Quixote, an NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Reserve Champion. In describing the physical attributes and power of the Leo’s Question, Wilkins noted that these physical attributes carried on into the produce of the Leo’s Question daughters. “They’re the most physical horses that I’ve ever been around,” he said. “They have tremendous physical ability and staying power. They’ve got so much heart that you just cannot ride them down. You just can’t wear them out. If you’ve got a chore that requires all day, they’re with you all day. They have so much heart and so much give to them. It’s that Leo breeding with so much staying power. They just won’t give up." The life of Leo’s Question parallels the life of Leo to a degree: He was a good race horse that sired good race, halter and performance horses. He sired several sons that proved to be good sires and his daughters became great producers of cutting horses. The success of Leo’s Question has been a major influence on the legacy of Leo, a legacy of stamina and power in the modern performance horse.
