03 _ Human Dynamics
Observation Matrix + Mapping Overlay
Scale: Body Site: Orchard St. Between Delancey & Broom Materials: 2 Oxford Shirts, Stitching, Drafting Tape Design: Attempting to exhaust a place I tracked 6 factors of people & behavior networking/indexing the results into a system of 36 photos of seemingly minor but deeply significant events in urban space. By mapping the findings I highlighted invisible connections & designed a prosthetic to better understand them. An extension of the body, architecture acts as a prosthetic, altering vision & motion. By extracting from research
extruding the diagram I created a tool for experiencing human dynamics. Accentuating the miniscule gravitational pull we exhibit on each other, it describes hidden intricacies. The final result is a human typology describing dynamics between individuals, groups & the the city. A mapping that can be overlayed & tested on other blocks & cities as well.

Programming Spatial Experiences
By warping, connecting & building space a dynamic relationship is created. The object frames the city & the city frames the object on a sliding scale from large to small, dense to sparse. Exploring human curiosity it highlights the unseen & creates a typology of spatial conditions.
Scale: Instalation Site: Flatiron Building Materials: 36 1/4� basswood lengths (24� long)
The positioning Flatiron creates unique perspectives into spacial dynamics by carving negative space into the urban landscape.
Design: Extruding form data & diagrams I built an armature that performs abstract functions through simple geometric operations. A framing tool for forced perspective guiding eye site in/through certain directions/views to find hidden shapes uncovering something new as people circulate, breaking geomatry & reframing it as the object crystallizes & aggregates. A level of adaptation to the site builds spatial articulation making the negative a positive. People inhabit the negative space bringing tangibility while it exudes force on passers by, dictating flow & movement. Taking the unseen to the next level & turning what is absent into something present.

Scale: Room Site: Non-Existent Conceptual Area Materials: 1 roll of twine & previous model Design: Through negative space I explored spacial dynamics but Georges Perec described 38 additional “species of space” in his 1974 essay. I dove deeper into this idea at the garment district where I “stalked” a garment, how it is worn, stored & folded. By documenting its movement & human interaction with it I was able to capture the ephemeral space created by it. I deconstructed this space by quantifying it based on observable elements. Using this information I designed 2 changing rooms by deconstructed the space created in my previous model. What was once implied now became clearly observable. By deconsutring space ideas of privacy vs publicity, concealment vs revealment, introversion vs extroversion, transparency, translcency translucency, & opacity are explored. Some spaces are meant for one person but some are meant for two or more, reconnecting to the idea of human dynamics. Space created allows people to pass through or find a corner in which they can change. .

Designing Situations Through Tectonics
Scale: Building Site: Lincoln Center, Corner of Opera House Materials: Chipboard Design: Built objects tend to extend their forces into unseen spatial conidtions. The corner of the opera house presents a matrix of these forces to which people react in various ways. How they interact with the area individually or in a group, how it influences pedestrian traffic or where people choose to gather. By utelizing tectonic methods to designate programatic areas I designed a fashion atilier that features retail space, archive/storage, permanent runway, & observation area.
