Spring 2025 Adult Formation

Catechumenate

The Catechumenate is a community of learning, conversation, and fellowship in a gathering as old as Christianity itself. It is the journey to baptism, confirmation, and reception into the Episcopal Church, or the reaffirmation of baptismal vows. Participation in the Catechumenate is also a wonderful way to learn more about Saint John’s as a cathedral and a community. Two Catechumenate classes will be offered this Spring; Visit sjcathedral.org/catechumenate to register.

Women’s Bible Study

with Canon Katie

Third Tuesdays through April 8

10 am in-person in Room 107 and 5 pm online

The parables of the lost coin, the leaven, the ten maidens, and the judge and the widow all share women as the main characters of the stories Jesus tells. What can we learn from these women and how do parables featuring women differ from others? Join Canon Katie in an exploration and discussion of these figurative women in the gospels. All Saint John’s parishioners and friends who identify as women are welcome. Nursery care will be provided for the Tuesday morning Bible studies.

Lent & the Five Physical Senses

with Dean Richard and Canon Katie Wednesdays from March 12 to April 9 in Room 107

Join Canon Katie and Dean Richard as they discuss the meaning and spiritual practices of Lent. Using Sam Portaro’s lovely, short book on Lent, Sense and Sensibility: A Lenten Exploration, they will talk about the history and symbolism of Ash Wednesday and then focus on one of the physical senses (sight, sound, touch, smell, & taste) for each week in Lent. In this way, participants will learn to see that Lent is about becoming more — not less — human and humane.

Cathedral Night

Wednesdays, January 29 through February 26

Holy Eucharist at 5:30 pm

Dinner at 6 pm

Formation & Small Group Gatherings at 7 pm

Cathedral Night is a beloved tradition at Saint John’s: an evening of worship, fellowship, and formation, including a delicious meal prepared by our very own Cathedral Cooks. Join us for the entire evening or one offering.

At Saint John’s, we have a shared hunger for meaning, learning, and connection. Christian Formation includes journeying together through faith and doubt, engaging in scripture, sharing our stories, and exploring what it means to follow Christ in a world that needs the good news of God’s love.

For more information on all of our formation opportunities, go to sjcathedral.org/learn.

Men’s Bible Study with Dean Richard

Third Tuesdays through April 8

10 am in the Saint John’s Library

Genesis is filled with dramatic stories that mysteriously resonate with life today. As the novelist Marilynne Robinson has written in light of these stories, “Love and grief are, in this infinite Creation, things of the kind we share with God.” Using Robinson’s new commentary on Genesis as our companion, Dean Richard will walk us through the details of these foundational Biblical stories before asking participants to reflect on how they relate to our own personal stories. Each class stands on its own; you can come and go as your schedule allows. Nursery care will be provided for the Tuesday morning Bible studies.

SAGES: Spiritual Awareness & Growth in Everyday Situations

Wednesdays during Cathedral Night at 7 pm

SAGES returns to Cathedral Night as a space to explore the spiritual journey of our daily lives in support and community. Using poetry as the starting point of our conversations, each group is encouraged to go, conversationally, where the Spirit leads. The groups offered are SAGES for our Beloved LGBTQI+ ministry, SAGES for our 20s & 30s ministry, and SAGES for all those in their 40s plus.

Parents Pause

Weekly during Cathedral Night, parents come together before dinner for social connection, conversation around various parenting topics, and prayer during chorister rehearsal. Childcare is provided.
