CANVAS HOUSE

HOCKING HILLS, OHIO / UG2 / WI ‘09

CANVAS HOUSE For this project, I was required to design a house in Hocking Hills Ohio for the client of my choosing. The client was to be someone with a specialized hobby, so I choose a grafiti artist. My idea was to take the traditional idea of a two dimensional canvas and apply that two the building envelope. I then made undulations in the facade to create a new spatial environment that now feels more like sculture than painting.

SULLIVANT HALL RENOVATION

THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY / UG3 / WI ‘10

SULLIVANT HALL RENOVATION Sullivant Hall is home to the dance department on the campus of The Ohio State University. For this project I was required to redesign the building to accomodate the dance department as well as the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design and the Wexner Center for the Arts cartoon library. My aim for this project was to create an environment in which the inherent synergies between the dance school and ACCAD could function alongside the cartoon library. This was accomplished by creating open catwalk circulation system that allows the individual program to flow seamlessly between levels. In addition, each category of program is clad to identify its relationship to the three colleges being represented.

BETTER BIRTHS CENTER (GROUP PROJECT)

WEINLAND PARK / UG3 / SP ‘10

BETTER BIRTHS CENTER The Weinland Park community suffers from some of the worst cases of premature births in Central Ohio. This is due in large part to a lack of prenatal care in a comfortable neighborhood setting. Our goal was to promote healthy lifestyles from conception to adulthood by including a health and fitness spa. By combining Medical, Mental, and Physical health services to pregnant women and the community alike, the hope is to educate and influence patterns at a young age and increase healthy birthrates.

MAIN IDEA

The main idea is to promote healthy lifestyles from conception to adulthood.

PROGRAM COMMUNITY

The building is broken into three bars focussing on prenatal care, community, and a fitness spa. FITNESS SPA

Architecturally, the idea of promoting health is rendered by elevating the Fitness Room and slanting the windows to create a playful reference to body movement. By elevating the building we were also able to place the mechanical systems bellow allowing for a lighter roof and create a street side plaza.

SUSTAINABILITY

GLASS ROOF IS SHADED BY SOLAR PANELS THAT REFLECT THE LIGHT.

Design elements such as solar panels and collecting pools improve the buildings ability to sustain itself. The solar panels collect energy and reflect light acting as solar shades and energy collectors.

FACES (GROUP PROJECT)

KNOWLTON SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE / UG4 / AU ‘11

FACES The main space is well occupied by the three corresponding elements of the project; the projected face, the wooden faces, and the concrete faces the source, the forms, and the formed. The forms all stem from the source image, a composite of many different faces which have been transformed into a typographical object. With the explicit language of face removed, the features are blurred or sharpened to create twelve distinct variations of the face in varying degrees of resolution. After a series of transformative processes, the mask becomes representative of the origin of its evolution, which no longer exists. The notion of the array functions as something more than a distribution, or matrix, of the forms. The array as a way of creating and documenting a series.
