While space becomes scarce, the idea of “a home” or “a house” is subject to change. Within a rapidly densifying urban environment we consider identity and place-making part of the most important goals. The identity of many typical houses are described by one feature, either the ‘red door’, ‘the green shutters’ or the even ‘the big oak’. In this proposal 7 distinct “Hoofddorpse Huizen” are designed, in which the shared entrance and public spaces define and display the identity of these houses. Inspired by the adjacent qualities of the Wandelbos and nearby community project ‘ de Fruittuinen”, the plot seeks a visual and existential connection with these surroundings. The proposal builds on the romantic idea of explaining where you live; “...I live at the house with the cherry blossom”. All ‘front-door’s from the Hoofddorpse Huizen have a direct connection to the communal garden. The structure of the communal garden is derived from spacing that the identities - all fruit-trees - need, to live and grow in prosperity.

Within a KCAP masterplan a high-end residential urban block is designed along the marina and IJssel as a contemporary interpretation and continuation of the picturesque historical IJsselfront. Materiality and the classical tripartite division both distinguish and connect the designs from Zecc and KCAP. Whereas Zecc uses the plinth as a unique design feature, KCAP designed a plethora of unique ‘crowns’. 10

A residential tower wit commercial spaces in the plinth and ‘ city balcony’ arises on the busy junction of the Stadsring and the Snouckaertslaan. Instead of claiming all the available footprint to build on, the L-shape footprint takes on the shape of a gate which connects the city, through a lush city garden, towards the Zonnehof. A grand ‘city balcony’ is created on the mid-section of the building, providing a beautiful view towards the city and the church tower of the ‘Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren’.

TRANSPARENCY BLENDS NEW PUBLIC APPEARANCE WITH FORMER INDUSTRIAL CHARACTER

Coming all the way from the Seine, Canal St. Martin connects different neighborhoods by providing a quality public space. It is at the junction of Place de Stalingrad, where this path is interrupted by heavy traffic and an industrial plot. The developed masterplan reconnects both public spheres along the canal, and activates the spaces along the water by public functions. Part of this masterplan is the redevelopment of one of the last industrial remnants in the surroundings: a 140m long, 12m wide and 3 story high warehouse will be transformed to a cultural center with a library and theatre.

MASTER PLAN TRANSFORMS TWO DISRUPTED REALMS INTO ONE CONTINUOUS PUBLIC SPACE ALONG THE CANAL

Framed by its own excavation the plot bears outstanding qualities as a public space to reside. Key components to establishing a good public space are the interaction of the building by means of increased transparency and interacting public programming. To anchor its new function in the surroundings, entrances are realized on both street and quai level. Good visual and physical connections, and spa-

ciousness, are realized by carefully positioned penetrations through floors and facades. Given the narrow dimensioning of the building, expansion in front of the building allows the original footprint to be used in the most flexible way. The gallery in front of the building reveals movement, while the former exterior wall becomes the membrane between program and circulation. The materialzation celebrates

the continuous ageing of the building. As the contemporary Muntz metal louvers and 2 story high glass facade are prominent during the day, the balance shifts towards the rhythm of the rich brickwork of the warehouse that lights up at night. The result is a dynamic building of which its patina is shifting throughout the day: The industrial zeitgeist together with the new public function, enhance each other in duality. 15

Arden Macaulay, North Melbourne, Australia individual project urban design | redevelopment | transportation | retail MICRO-CITY UNDER A ROOF

The whole is greater then the sum of it’s parts” (Aristotles). Rapid growth of North-Melbourne dictates the need for a new mall with public facilities and a single line metro station. The proposed concept combines both features under one unifying roof, allowing them to benefit from each others activity and proximity. This roof is constructed from typical Melbourne red brick, appearing as heavy monolith hovering over the plot to provide shelter and comfort. As vast and distinct as the rhythm of this monolith is, the inside of the mall is shaped to induce interaction and frame surprises. While public space rather than buildings create successful cities, the result is rather derived from a studies of the urban environment. Gordon Cullen’s “The Concise Townscape” inspired my approach to design the building as a sequence of spaces, very much dictating the usage, paths and experiences of the citizens. 18

Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, Amsterdam, The Netherlands individual project transformation | mixed use | hotel | conferences | restaurant | offices

The heritage Post Telegraph and Telephone building has been appointed as the new location for TEDx. By topping out the building from behind the current facade, the uniform perforated corten steel volume blends with the existing architecture without interfering with the strong existing composition. Two level and transparent entrances increase the permeability and accessibility. To facilitate the core purpose of TED, positioning of the program is dictated by studies as to where good ideas come from. This resulted in an orchestration of interaction, to allow small ideas from different fields of expertise to collide in corridors, shared spaces and elevators.

Elandsstraat, Jordaan, Amsterdam, the Netherlands individual project architecture | primary school | daycare

Increasing in popularity is the typology where primary schools and daycare share spaces to simplify daily accommodation of young scholars. This project aims to investigate a new approach for the current needs to share accommodation. Rather than making the distinction in program between both organizations, the concept separates the actual activities: playing and learning. Studying the conditions that are needed to perform best in those activities, the concept resulted in a playful“ above ground” and rational “under ground” for concentration. Study on the psychology of the underground shows that it can provide a mindset of calmness and protection, while quality of the spaces can still be guaranteed by providing good orientation and lighting conditions. It eliminates all the unwelcome incentives, especially in the buzzing city of Amsterdam, while the patios ensure deep penetration of daylight and fresh air. The playing environment is characterized by pavilions that are specifically suited for a range of distinct activities. The sports hall can be used during evenings and weekend events by the municipality while it has its independent entrance. 22
