Just Love
February is a time of year many people associate with love. Because of Valentine’s day, we think a little more about those people close to us and buy sweet treats to show them how much they mean to us. This is also the time of year when many young couples say “I Do” and decide to create a new life together. The start of an exciting new time in these couple’s lives when they move from being two people to becoming one couple. Life has an interesting way of showing us how love is so important in our lives. Not just the traditional love, but also the love you can have for a friend, a community or a moment. When I was a young man in my early years of high school I met a very special young lady. She impressed me with her shyness, intelligence and natural beauty. I fell for her as our relationship grew over time. I vividly remember they day where I realized I could not survive without the love of this sweet young lady. As I sat there, now in college, contemplating the future I realized that every life changing event which I had not yet experienced... every success that would come in the future...every heart ache and challenge which would surely materialize in the future...every aspect of my life...was something I yearned to share with her. She had
become as essential to my being as food, water and air. It was at that moment I realized...and prayed... that she would become my wife. I was fortunate that she agreed and this year will mark the 20th year that I have had the honor and privilege of calling her my wife. Love also manifests itself in other ways. Over the years I have built life long friendships and share a level of love with these people that has cemented their importance in my life and mine in theirs. Similar to the love of a brother or sister. I have also experienced love from a complete stranger that has had a lasting impact. An unexpected smile from someone I will probably never meet again that just happened to come when I needed it most. It is amazing how much impact a simple act of love can have on the world around us. This month I challenge each of you to do something very simple... very easy...very impactfull. This month I challenge you to just love. Lend a smile to a stranger, call up an old friend, play a game with your kids, do something anonymous for someone in need, just spread some love around. I guarantee this simple expansion of love in our community will come back ten fold and continue to make our world a better place. Happy February and remember, just love!

EXPERIENCESOUTHAURORA SOUTHAURORAhistory THE DELANEY ROUND BARN
Seeing rustic farmhouses dotting the Colorado countryside is not something out of the ordinary. It is quite extraordinary, however, to see something like the beautifully restored Delaney Round Barn. Part of the 158 acre Delaney Farm Historic District and Community Farm, the Round Barn serves as a reminder of a very unique architecture and time. Round barns, while not as popular as their more recognizable “big red barn” counterparts, mark an important time in early 20th Century architecture. These unique barns, which include octagonal and polygonal as well as circular design plans, were at the height of their popularity at the turn of the century between the years 1880-1920. The DeLaney Round Barn was originally constructed in 1902 to serve as a grain silo and was converted into a two-story cow barn around 1912. The John Delaney family lived in a home across the Toll Gate
Creek and raised horses, dairy cattle and other livestock here. The DeLaney Round Barn, quite possibly one of the few round barns left in Colorado, is currently owned by the City of Aurora and houses an exhibit on dairy farming and agriculture in the Aurora area. The former homestead is located at 170 S. Chambers Road. For more information on the DeLaney Community Farm, visit www.dug.org.

GOOCHIE CAKES
In the age of Pintrest and DIY-ing everything, there’s oodles of information out there on making your own custom cake creations, cupcake towers and cake pop confections. Pictures online and on baking competition shows may look like something anyone could do – but some things are best left to the professionals! The owner of Goochie Cakes was one such DIY-er when, several years ago, she decided she wanted to do something extra special for her mother’s surprise 60th birthday party. Wisely, she started researching months before and many, many hours and trials later, the final result was a show stopper. With that labor of love, a path to a new career was paved. Thanks to word of mouth and the powers of social media, a star was born. Two years ago, more space for more cakes was needed and the current location was opened. The cupcake recipes from the original shop were brought over and incorporated into the cakes and yummy treats (cake pops anyone?) and the retro inspired, Rock and Roll, retro bakery Goochie Cakes came to fruition. If you think the designs are amazing, that’s nothing compared to the flavors and fillings offered. Choose from enticing varieties such as Dark Chocolate, Lemon, Red Velvet and the classic white or yellow cakes and more. Filling options include buttercream flavors like cinnamon, lemon, strawberry or vanilla (and many more.) Most cakes are covered in vanilla or fondant in order to create a blank canvas for the out of this world decorating work. Cupcakes flavors like Strawberry Lemonade, Snickerdoodle, S’mores, Turtle and White Chocolate Macadamia are waiting to tempt you as well. If that weren’t enough, custom cake pop creations can be conjured up and exquisite wedding cakes and groom’s cakes are available to order as well. All cake orders are custom and therefore require at least a week’s notice. Prices depend on the number of people the cake needs to serve (the size), flavors and complexity of the design. All orders and inquiries must be placed through Goochie Cake’s contact page at www.goochiecakes.com or via email at GoochieGourmet@gmail. com. It’s amazing what a little cake and a lot of imagine can do! As Goochie Cakes say, it’s all about “Peace, Cake and Rock-n-Roll!” 5 SEARCH SOUTH AURORA MAGAZINE

Bring your fur baby to Tagawa Gardens annual My Furry Valentine event on Sunday, February 14th for a ton of tail-wagging fun! The My Furry Valentine event will feature over thirty local vendors offering pet services, accessories and gifts! THEBOOKENDS
with Pam & Becky
The Gilded Hour By Sara Donati
Welcome to New York City in 1883. Construction on the Brooklyn Bridge is almost complete, transportation was primarily by walking or horse-drawn carriage, gaslight was the main source of lighting and communication is done by writing letters or telegrams. Meet Anna and her cousin Sophie Savard. Both are doctors that specialize in women’s health. They have a passion to help women but it is a male dominated occupation, during a time when women have few options in regard to their bodies. BECKY This 700 plus page book has so many topics
that are covered during this story that I don’t know where to begin. We have romance, murder, immigration issues, missing children and the controversial topic of contraception and abortion. For the majority of the story we follow Dr. Anna Savard. She is a single, no-nonsense doctor working at a charity hospital. Did you easily warm up to this character?
PAM Initially, I felt that Anna’s character was going to be abrupt and cold. However, as I got to know her, I loved the combination of strength and caring that was Anna Savard. Sophie and Anna were part of an unconventional family that embraced the education and voice of women in a time when not all appreciated this change. They lived with their aunt, who was a strong woman that encouraged and supported Sophie and Anna in their educational and career goals. What did you feel about this character? BECKY Aunt Quinlan was one of the more interesting
FEBRUARY 2016
characters to me. She had a smaller part but I enjoyed her view on life. She was very forward thinking regarding a woman’s role in the world. In her home, girls were encouraged to explore, try new things and be independant. She had a very strong and specific role in this story. However, while I was reading, I had a hard time distinguishing Anna and Sophie’s “voice” during the story, did you?
PAM I agree. It was challenging to form a complete picture of either one, especially at the beginning of the story. One of the many story lines begins when Anna is called to examine and determine health issues for a large group of orphans. This leads to Anna meeting a family of children that have recently lost their parents. Although there are many children, she is drawn to this family and will cross paths again. Anna also meets Jack, a detective with the local police department. They feel an attraction right away and we witness a courtship that bewilders Anna, who felt she would never have a relationship. What were your feelings about Jack? 11 SEARCH SOUTH AURORA MAGAZINE
BECKY He was a
very likable character. I pictured someone similar to George Clooney. He was successful, handsome, unattached, liked children and was close to his sister’s family. A little too good to be true but his character fit well in this story that had so much going on. There are some sensual scenes that I didn’t think were necessary but you can easily skip over those areas if it’s not to your liking. When I picked this book I didn’t realize that it was the first part of a series. Were you satisfied with the conclusion of this book?
PAM I didn’t realize this book was the first in a series. That puts the conclusion into a new perspective for me! There were many unanswered questions at the end of this story. Will you read the next book to help answer some of these outstanding questions? BECKY There are a few storylines that I would like to know
the end to but I wouldn’t be interested in taking on another book of this size just to get the complete picture. There are some friends that I would recommend this book to but it’s unlikely that I would pursue this author again. Check out this website if this book looks interesting to you, http:// thegildedhour.com . It has some wonderful information, a deleted scene and a few photos. Are your unanswered questions enough to encourage you to read the next book in this series?
PAM If I am looking for a book to read, I will probably pick up her next story in order to solve the remaining mysteries. I really enjoyed a few of the characters and wouldn’t mind following the rest of their adventures. I will have to check out the website! Our next adventure will take us to London and Paris, as we follow the adventures of two women that have a surprising connection.

pproximately 85% of the US population will experience acute low back pain lasting 2-4 weeks. Let’s face it, we sit too much and move too little, which can contribute to weakness, stiffness and low back pain. If you are one of these people, you know the difficulties that accompany low back pain. Many people get better after 2-4 weeks, however, the pain may last weeks, months and years longer. If you are one of the few that are experiencing chronic low back pain, you may benefit from clinical Pilates. Clinical Pilates is an approach that combines the benefits of Physical Therapy and Pilates- based exercises to turn on the deepest core muscles that are slow to rebound after an episode of acute low back pain. Instead of returning to normal looking and functioning spinal muscles they lose strength, reduce in size, and turn into fatty tissues. Fatty tissues do not provide the strength and stability to the bones in the back. Instead, the loss of ‘normal stiffness’ and strength of the spine allows unwanted, extra movements, causing wear and tear on the sensitive tissues of the bones, ligaments, joints, muscles and nerves in the back causing back pain. The back pain may eventually disappear, but the muscles haven’t regained their strength, size, stamina and stability without the proper deep core training. Pilates works to strengthen the deepest core muscles of the abdominals and spinal muscles, returning the fatty, dysfunctional muscles to strong, resilient and stabilizing structures. When these muscles remain weak, you are more susceptible to reinjuring your back, or another body part, due to changes and adaptations as a result of the normal healing process. These movement adaptations are subtle and create compensations in how you move and your ability to properly access your deep core muscles. The subtle movement changes lead to tight, weak and deconditioned tissues setting you up for other injuries. Pilates helps identify the weak, tight and deconditioned tissues leaving you with a stronger, more flexible and balanced body. Before beginning a Pilates program for back pain check with your doctor or physical therapist. Once you are cleared to begin exercising, it’s always a good idea to work with an instructor who specializes in back pain. Some exercises may not be appropriate for your back based on your diagnosis, what movements alleviate and what movements aggravate your pain. For example, back pain due to a bulging disc may be made worse by sitting and forward leaning positions. For this reason, it is important that people who are experiencing back pain, are carefully assessed by a healthcare professional before starting a Pilates for back pain program. Are you ready to reduce the wear and tear on your spine and create a stronger, more flexible and balanced body? Try Clinical Pilates…it does a body good!! Dr. Rebecca Hoeck is a Physical Therapist and Certified Pilates Instructor. She is the owner and clinical director of Intelligent Motion Therapy, LLC.
