# WishGranted Make-A-Wish Colorado partners with local high schools to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Their mission is to grant the wish of every child diagnosed with a critical illness.

8 SEARCHCASTLEROCK

High schools around the county recently hosted “Wish Weeks” to raise money for children in the Make-a-Wish Foundation. In this beautiful community effort, the high schools host talent shows, dodgeball tournaments, school assemblies, and more to charge ticket fees, ask for donations, and raise funds that go toward this worthy cause. The week is filled with kindness and service. Wishes are more than just a nice thing. And they are far more than gifts, or singular events in time. Wishes impact everyone involved - wish kids, volunteers, donors, sponsors, medical professionals and communities. For wish kids, just the act of making their wish come true can give them the courage to comply with their medical treatments. Parents might finally feel like they can be optimistic. And still others might realize all they have to offer the world through volunteer work or philanthropy. Make-A-Wish traces its inspiration to Christopher James Greicius, an energetic 7-year-old boy battling leukemia who wished to be a police officer. In 1980, his Phoenix community came together to make his wish come true. Little did Chris know that his wish would create a movement that would transform millions of lives. Today, Make-A-Wish has granted hundreds of thousands of lifechanging wishes to children battling critical illnesses. Wishes that give families hope through dark times, strength to persevere and experiences that forever change their lives. Ponderosa High School raised money this year to help Kennadie, a young girl who suffers from a rare form of liver disease and is in need of a liver transplant. She loves all things Disney and the events were Disney-themed. In this incredible community response, over $35,000 was raised to help Kennadie to achieve her wish of going to Disneyworld and to help the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Teagan, a sophomore at Ponderosa, decided to have his head shaved in an act of selflessness to help raise extra money for Kennadie. He said, “I decided to shave my head in the assembly because I thought I needed a change to my hair and when I heard that we could raise a lot of money for Kennedie, I thought why not? During the assembly, I was really excited! I wasn't even nervous! I was excited and exhilarated! I honestly did not think we would make that much, so when I found out we made over $1,800, I was flabbergasted! While I was getting my hair shaved, people were screaming my name and I was so excited! Afterwards, I felt excited for Kennedie and I couldn't believe that it actually happened! My hair is growing back quickly and I was honored to participate in making Kennedie's wish come true!”

Staff organize children outside the church building

When a burst pipe forced over 300 children to evacuate their classrooms, they found refuge from the bitter cold with help from a neighbor. by AMBER TUELLER

| photos provided by LEGACY POINT ELEMENTARY

It was a freezing, cold morning on Friday, March 11, when a pipe burst and water began pouring into the Legacy Point Elementary commons area. The fire alarm was pulled and everyone quickly headed out of the building, leaving laptops, coats, and bags in classrooms. When they made it outside students, teachers, and staff were greeted by 10° weather. President Dave Crandall, part of the local leadership for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, received a call regarding the stranded group. He invited them to take shelter in one of the church’s Parker buildings on French Creek Avenue, next door to the school. Kristin Drury, principal for Legacy Point, noted that nearly 50 adults and 300 students walked down the hill to the church building. In this act of kindness, they were able to stay warm and comfortable during the next three hours while parents made arrangements to pick up their children. 10 SEARCHCASTLEROCK

Students were split into grades and spread out on the floor of the gym and other large classrooms in the church building. Teachers drew on chalk boards to explain what had happened in the school and answered questions about pipes. A movie projector also helped to keep little ones occupied. President Crandall shared some tender moments, like when a boy seeking comfort asked for some scriptures. Another boy pointed to a large painting of Jesus Christ on the wall and said, “Isn’t this His church?” to which the answer was yes. Then the boy asked, “But didn’t he die?” President Crandall responded, “Yes, he did, but he came back to life.” There were many parents to greet in the foyer as they picked up their children. They expressed gratitude and shared how much this experience meant to them. It is wonderful to see a community coming together in hard times!

Happy Trails! We are incredibly lucky to live in an area teeming with beautiful hike and bike trails, and for those a little more daring, rockier mountain trails, that we can walk, run, stroll, bike and ride on to enjoy the great state of Colorado. To keep the trails in great shape for everyone and ensure trail outings are enjoyable ones, there are a few things to keep in mind. Trail etiquette will differ slightly from trail to trail and place to place, but some basic rules of thumb apply to most. Bouldermountainbike.org offers a great reminder, “treat everyone you meet on the trail like you’d treat your mother (if you don’t like your mother, think of someone you really, really like.) Being nice solves a lot of problems before they happen.” Be nice. It’s a pretty simple rule. Be nice to the trail, stay on it, keep it in good shape, keep it clean and know when to yield to others on the trail. Knowing who has the right of way can be kind of tricky, but generally speaking, bikers yield to hikers and horses; hikers yield to horses and downhill traffic yields to uphill traffic. The concept is that bikers are fast and can stop and go easily so they let everything else have the right of way. Horses are big and unpredictable so they get the right of way above everyone else. Colorado trails are definitely a place where you could meet the occasional equestrian and should you meet a horse and rider on the trail, be considerate, step off the trail on the downhill side. Moving to the downhill side, when letting horses by, reduces your size and appearance and horses will tend to bolt uphill when spooked. Quietly greet the rider and ask if you are good where you are. Stand quietly while the horse and rider pass. In any situation, it is always best to communicate with the rider to ask them what they prefer, as they know their animal best. You and Mr. Ed should get along just fine that way. So far it seems pretty easy. Everyone yields to horses, bikers yield to hikers, and downhill yields to uphill. Hikerdude.

Trail Etiquette Made Easy

com is quick to point out a few “gray areas” you may find yourself hiking through. “What if a downhill hiker meets an uphill cyclist? The guidelines would say the biker yields, but personally I know it is a lot easier for me to stop and start hiking than it is when riding, so I generally step off the trail when hiking or running. I suppose the cyclist should never have an expectation that the hiker will let you pass, but it might happen out of courtesy.” What if an uphill runner meets up with a group hiking down the trail? Downhill traffic should yield, but a single runner may want to step off the trail, as it’s easier for one to move aside than a larger group of hikers. When yielding to other traffic, remember to always look for safe and durable surfaces to step onto. And finally, the International Mountain Biking Association recommends when riding single track to come to a complete stop and then side step off the trail, as opposed to just riding off the side of trail, and thereby widening it.

FOR QUICK REFERENCE, HERE ARE A FEW TIPS! • • • • • • • • • •

Stay on the trail. Do not cut switchbacks or take shortcuts. Stay to the right on wider paths and pass on the left. Whenever you stop for a view, a rest, or to yield, move off the trail so it is free for others. Greet people you meet. This makes sure they know you are there and is polite. When in a group, walk single file or take up no more than half of a wide trail. Make sure everyone in your group understands what actions to take when encountering walker, bikers, and horses. Read trailhead guidelines. There may be specific rules for the trail you are on. Pack It In - Pack It Out. Don't Litter! Take a Picture. A pretty rock or a bunch of flowers deserve to remain where they are. Report vandalism. Whether you’re walking, cycling or riding, get out and enjoy the trails!
