EDITOR'STAKE

I have come to dislike the phrase Falling in Love. Sorry hopeless romantics. It's not that I am against the notion, I "fell" in love with my wife 25 years ago and I am more in love with her every day. What I object to is the connotation that falling in love evokes. It makes it feel arbitrary, out of our control even. Something that happens to you against your will. The reason I object to the phrase is because if you accept involuntarily being made to fall into love, doesn't that mean that you can just as unwittingly fall OUT of love?

Love is a choice.

I think that is true for all kinds of love; romantic, sibling, and even neighborly. Love in any form is never easy, at least not the lasting kind. Being willing to so easily accept "falling out" of love is a coward's way of escape. And it is prevalent in the world we live in. Especially among neighbors. Why do we have such contempt for our neighbors and community members that have a different view than us?

I love this story about why sometimes we choose not to love our neighbor.

A couple sat at their kitchen table to indulge in a delicious breakfast. The wife looked out the window and saw her neighbor hanging laundry on the clothesline.

"Her laundry is never clean!" she said to her husband. "Someone needs to teach her a thing or two when it comes to washing her clothes!"

Day after day, the wife would complain to her husband about their neighbor's dirty laundry. One morning, as they enjoyied their breakfast, she noticed something was different.

"Wow, look!" the surprised wife said to her husband, "Her clothes are clean. Someone must have taught her how to wash her clothes."

Without raising his head from his plate, the husband kindly responded, "Actually, honey, I got up early this morning and washed the window."

And so it is with life - what we see when watching others depends on the window through which we look. Have more patience, more empathy, more understanding ... and choose to love.

DATE NIGHT DATE NIGHT

DATE NIGHT

I love dinner and a movie, but if you’re stuck in a dating rut and need some fun date night ideas, step out of the box with these easy and fun options to give you some inspiration!

12 SEARCHPARKER

February is typically the month of hearts and flowers, chocolate and cupids and many grand gestures of wining and dining with day-long outings of intricately planned details. Most reading may agree: sometimes less is more and grand gestures, although appreciated, aren’t always what they're cracked up to be; sometimes we’re just looking for a little something different for a fun night out. If you’re looking to plan a date night or just a night out with friends, there are lots of options you may not have realized are available. Whether you’re looking for a new culinary experience, something a bit adventurous, a little art and culture or something completely different, check out what might be your next night out.

Want to keep it simple with a nice dinner out? Why not try something new like the Brazilian inspired dishes at Fogo de Chão, scratch-made Italian at Portofinos, or maybe the Greek fare at Opa Grill?

Feeling a bit daring? Maybe look into exploring the Denver area a little differently with BigCity Hunt (www.scavengerhunt. com). See some of the best sites through photo challenges and fun activities to do with a group of friends. Maybe take a drive around town or even to the mountains, but in your DREAM car (denverluxurycarrental.com or exoticdrivesdenver. com). Rather take a spin on the dance floor instead of the highway? Many dance schools offer classes for adults from ballroom to hip hop. Check out Fred Astaire (www.fredastaire. com) for some toe tapping options. Perhaps you’d like to do something out of the ordinary, but make it a night in? Check

out www.nightofmystery.com for a variety of Murder Mystery party plots and ideas.

Those looking for a sportier night out may want to try some fun straight out of the pages of gym class. Check out Ultimate Dodgeball at Skyzone, book the climbing wall at Parker Recreation or lace up your skates at the Ice Trail at Discovery Park. Maybe drive a few miles out of town and try your hand at any one of the activities at Family Sports Center (laser tag, climbing wall, ice arena, or the two-tiered, heated driving range) www.ssprd.org/Family-Sports-Center. Instead of a battle on the turf, maybe a battle of wits is in order - check out Try’n Escape. See if you can beat the clock against Ghostly Mayhem, Money Madness or the Sinking Ship room. (trynescapeco.com)

Looking to up the culture factor? The PACE Center and Schoolhouse Theater have schedules packed with shows (parkerarts.org). You could also take the things into your own hands, literally, by checking out Uncorked Kitchen. You’ve most likely seen this: professional chefs guide and work sideby-side with guests to help them transform some of the world’s finest ingredients into a soulful meal that’s ultimately enjoyed sitting down, together.

Exploring the city or staying close to home, the next time you get a date night on the calendar or you’re able to get the guys/ girls together, think outside the box a bit and try something new on for size. Don’t save the original ideas for once a year on Valentine’s - make every night out a new adventure!

Winter Vibes

Those long winter months can play havoc with our heads. Stuck inside, patience on its last nerve, sometimes all we need is an outlet. Here are a few suggestions to beat those winter blues.

Snowshoeing Tubing

Rocky Mountain National Park has various levels of trails that are available for snowshoeing. Also, they offer ranger-led snowshoe walks for beginners on weekends through March 31 on the east side and beginner and intermediate snowshoers through March 11 on the west side. Entrance fees to the park apply, however there is no additional fee for the walks. For more information, visit www.nps.gov/romo and search for snowshoe information.

A great place to enjoy some exciting, fast-paced tubing with the family is Fraser Tubing Hill, which is located two miles west of Winter Park. They charge $27 per hour. For more information, they can be reached at 970-726-5954.

14 SEARCHPARKER

Take a trip over to Glenwood Springs and enjoy a dip in their hot springs pool. For more information, call 970-947-2955.

Hot Tub

Beat those winter blues without ever leaving your back yard. Visit our friends at Spas of Parker to get a hot tub! Not only will this get you out of the house, the health benefits are amazing. Get more information by going to www.spasofparker.com

Neighborhood

Let’s not forget a great day spent sledding or tubing down the neighborhood hill! Also under this category we have building a snowman, erecting a snow fort, making snow art, etc. This year the kids are able to climb their very own tall mountain of snow in the comfort of their own yard!

Camping

For an entire weekend of winter family fun, a great place to visit is the YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch. You can make reservations to stay in a room, in a lodge, or reserve your own cabin. There are many winter activities to keep you busy during your stay. For more information or to make reservations, call 970-887-2152 or visit www.ymcarockies.org.

Hot Springs Ice Skating

What better way to enjoy the winter air than ice skating! The Ice Trail at Discovery Park is a great option. For a fun mountain experience, try Evergreen Lake. Get more information at www. evergreenrecreation.com

We are so excited to have our students and staff back in the classrooms after the winter break. During the new year, I’ve already had the absolute privilege of visiting some of our elementary schools and reading to students. It does not get any better than seeing the eager faces of Kindergarteners as you share with them the wonder of reading.

Core Reading Programs in DCSD

Speaking of reading, at the January 10 Board of Education meeting, principals and teachers from Cherokee Trail Elementary (Parker), Stone Mountain Elementary (Highlands Ranch), and Sage Canyon Elementary (Castle Rock) presented updates on how they are implementing our school district’s new Science of Reading based core reading programs in their classrooms. These programs are already making a significant impact on student literacy at our schools. The principals and teachers who spoke used many words to describe these new programs, including: “stability,” “alignment across grade levels,” “student love of reading and writing,” “teacher collaboration,” and more.

Staff Retention Strategies: Turning Disappointment into Opportunity

When the Mill Levy Override (5A) was narrowly defeated in November, it was disappointing as we had hopes of using that additional funding to make teacher and staff pay more competitive. While we’re not done working to pass additional funding in the future, we know that right now we must focus on retaining our amazing teachers and staff. We recently announced some exciting short-term retention strategies in hopes of encouraging our staff to stay with us for the 2023-2024 school year. We are able to do this by investing onetime savings from staff positions that were unfilled this year (due to current labor shortages) into our amazing teachers and staff. However, it’s critical to understand that this is only a one-year fix – our need for additional long-term funding to pay our teachers and staff more competitively with neighboring school districts remains.

Transportation Challenges: We Are Listening

We have heard from many of our families about how frustrating it is to have last minute cancellations of bus routes. We absolutely recognize how challenging this is for our families who rely on bus transportation for their students. The ongoing labor shortage combined with our inability to pay competitively compared to other school districts (and other employers) has contributed to us often not having enough staff to run all of our bus routes each day. However, we have heard loud and clear that our families want and need us to prioritize finding solutions. Even with our limited resources, we have made the decision to increase compensation for our Transportation staff as a step in trying to alleviate this ongoing challenge. You can help us by spreading the word about our need to hire additional bus drivers and transportation assistants. Encourage your networks to learn more about these positions and to apply to be part of our team! www.dcsdk12.org/DriveDCSD

DCSD Board Adopts 2023 Legislative Priorities

Another celebration that I must share is that our Board of Education voted 7-0 to adopt 2023 Legislative Priorities for our school district. At their Board retreat in December they engaged in some amazing discussions about these legislative priorities and worked collaboratively to find consensus on each area of focus.

As you can tell from the above, 2023 is already off to a great start here in DCSD and I’m feeling very optimistic about the future of our amazing school district.

Sincerely,

FEBRUARY 2023 19

Timely Tax Filing Tips

It’s tax time again. Oftentimes, the amount you owe is enough to raise your blood pressure. Now, add to that the fact that you waited until April 14 to start working on those taxes, and you have the makings of a major meltdown! This year, don’t let tax time take a toll on you. Instead, use these timely tax filing tips to take control.

Tip No. 1: Get organized

Start a folder of tax information. As you receive your W-2 forms, interest and dividend statements, mortgage interest statements and so forth, file them in this folder. Gathering this information now will save you or your tax preparer a lot of time and frustration later on.

Tip No. 2: Start early

Don’t wait until the last minute to get started. If you’re doing your own taxes, this will allow plenty of time for deep-breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. If a professional is figuring your taxes, it will allow you enough time to locate that interest-income form you forgot to file in your tax folder.

Tip No. 3: Choose your weapon

Should you figure your own taxes, purchase a computer tax program, or pay a professional to do the work for you? The answer depends on your situation and personal preferences. Here’s a quick look at the advantages of each:

Preparing Your Own Return

Lots of Americans calculate their own taxes each year armed with nothing more than a pile of tax forms, plenty of pencils, a calculator and lots of patience. If your financial situation hasn’t changed much and you don’t mind giving up your free time, this may be an ideal method for you. After all, you can’t beat the price.

Before you figure this year’s taxes, though, make sure you read up on the multitude of tax law changes going into effect this year. These changes affect everything from tax brackets and estate-tax rates to how much you can contribute to your IRA. Learn more by visiting the IRS’s Web site at www.irs.gov or visit your local library for more details.

Using a Computer Tax Program

If you enjoy working on the computer and would welcome help in completing your tax forms, you may want to consider purchasing tax software. Many good programs cost less than $100. Computer programs walk you step by step through the process of figuring your taxes. They also do all the necessary calculations, suggest deductions you may have overlooked, and even provide help if you get stumped. Remember if you ever give away or sell your computer, make sure you delete all personal information, including all tax information, as a safeguard.

Using a Tax Professional

The advantages of using a professional are obvious: You get the services of a professional who eats, sleeps and breathes IRS regulations and tax law changes. This may be especially beneficial this year because of the multitude of tax law changes going into effect. In addition, a good tax professional will try to provide every possible tax advantage allowed by law.

Unfortunately, professional tax preparation doesn’t come cheap. It may cost several hundred dollars to have your taxes done by a professional, but if you have a complex tax situation or are uncomfortable doing your taxes, that price may be a bargain.

April 15 may seem far away, but it will be here before you know it, so get started today. Getting organized and starting early may not lower your tax bill, but it sure will make this tax season less taxing for you.

Lena is the best! She is cute and spunky which makes every appointment fun and something to look forward to. She has so much wisdom, insight, and knowledge regarding hair and color. I rarely direct her, instead trusting her choices.

Kat is so wonderful and does an amazing job for my daughter and I. Customers of hers for 11 years!

I have been going to Leah for a few years now. I love her. My hair is very fragile. She takes good care of it. She does an awesome job on my highlights, lowlights, and anything else I have her do. She is also very very sweet! I hope she never leaves!
