I am a student as master of Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) in Japan. Since I was a child, I like making things so much. Even now I build some furniture and so on by myself. Therefore I decided to learn Architecture. From 11/2018, I moved to Zurich, Switzerland to experience internship at architecture office for 11 months. At the Switzerland which escaped war in Europe, the urban is formed with accumulation of history especially. Therefore I could learn the importance of reading and respecting the cultural context to design Architecture for people and urban.

Native TOEIC 810 I’m studing now

Architecture has quite big influence on society regardless of the size. Therefore, in the process of designing architecture, I always take care not only own interest but also influence on society. Unfortunately, nobody knows the correct answer to design Architecture, however we can chose the optimal solution from some considered solution.

For these reasons, I always repeat trial and error as much as possible to find the optimal solution for all society in the process of designing Architecture.

01 / 100m Primary School

In recent years, the developer build highrise residential apartment on the site which used as primary school. As people lives in the highrise residential apartment, the population in Osaka city is getting increase again. As a result of increasing of population, we need primary school again. However many primary school in Osaka was pulled down therefore it happen the shortage of classroom now. In order to solve the shortage of the classroom, the school building is expanded to the playground. Because of that, the ratio of playground area per person is reduced. So we have to consider not only increasing number of classroom but also keeping the area of playground. On the other hand, the facility of primary school is only for children and closed for other citizen generally. The facility is used only under half a day. In addition to that, the site which is build primary school is quite a large space in urban and almost occupied by playground. It means almost Floor area ratio is not used.

01 / 100m Primary School

For these reasons, we have to consider the new typology of primary school in urban to use the site and facility effectively and to open all citizen. The building of new typology has complex function such as Primary school, Kindergarten, Nursing house, Office, Media center, Sports center. These function can mix all generation in one building. This building will become the place for cultural exchange and relaxation in urban...

As a result of progress of living in suburb, it decrease the population in Osaka city. At the same time, the number of child is also decreased. Therefore some primary school is pulled down and the site is sold to developer.

The developer build highrise residential apartment on the site which used as primary school.

2017

Highrise residential apartment is not so expensive and easily accessible to workplace therefore people who lives in suburb move to urban. As people lives in the highrise residential apartment, the population in Osaka city is getting increase again.

As a result of increasing of population, we need primary school again. However many primary school in Osaka was pulled down and it happen the shortage of classroom now. Government estimates the population will keep increasing from now on and the shortage of classroom will become 140 classroom in Osaka until 2022.

In order to solve the shortage of the classroom, the school building is expanded to the playground. Because of that, the ratio of playground area per person is reduced. In Osaka city, all school are confronted with this kind of problem. The government recommend to keep 10m 2 playground per person but now it is getting being under half of it. So we have to consider not only increasing number of classroom but also keeping the area of playground.

-Shortage of Classroom vs Shortage of Playground-

4.5m2

01 / 100m Primary School

10m2

At this primary school, the volume of classroom is build at playground recently to make up for a deficiency.

We can imagine this situation could be happen in the next. As a building is build at playground, the ratio of playground area per person is reduced.

To avoid the second situation, we can add new volume as classroom on the existing building. But it is not realistic.

-New business model of primary school in urban-

-Business hours-

Generally, all citizen paid so much money for the facility of primary school. However that facility is only for children and closed for other citizen. The facility is used only under half a day. In addition to that, the site which is build primary school is quite a large space in urban and almost occupied by playground. It means almost FAR (Floor area ratio) is not used. Therefore we have to consider the new typology of primary school in urban to use the site and facility effectively and to open all citizen.

02 / YAKISUGI Pavilion

I was in charge of design this pavilion which is a shop of school festival. Our concept of the shop at this year was Japanese feeling WA( ĺ’Œ ). At the school festival, we can find so many place to get the food and drink every year. However there is no place to relax and have a conversation. Therefore I tried to build a large bench for all people who visit the festival. To build the large bench, I received an idea from ENGAWA which is the place of Japanese housing middle of inside and outside.

02 / YAKISUGI Pavilion

This shop has the characteristic long facade along the street because I combined 2 shops side by side to reduce the cost and manpower. It is quite large scale for human activities therefore I tried to divide the long facade to make human scale. To divide the facade, I referenced GANKO (Zigzag) which is traditional plot type in Japan. This GANKO facade not only divide the space but also connect all activities as one facade. This pavilion is not a leading character but a scene. As scene of activities, I decided to use Japanese traditional way, YAKISUGI as the facade. YAKISUGI which is burned cedar board is black appearance but it makes various shadow on the facade. This black facade melt into the surrounding and accentuate the activities drawn into the pavilion.

So I tried to combine these site and designed 16m facade. This horizontal and long facade can be a part of the road and create activities with the pedestrian.

I could get the cedar boards in sets of 1820 mm in length, 120 mm, 150 mm and 180 mm in width. I decided to make YAKISUGI from this material for black appearance without any cost. YAKISUGI is burned cedar board which is typical way in Japan. If I paint the cedar board, it's no shadow, on the other hand YAKISUGI make various shadows on the facade. When I burn the cedar boards, the edges of cedar boards is not burned and can't use it. Therefore, I designed random pattern facade to make the waste minimum.

03 / Floating House

We construct the strong building and infrastructure however nature is more strong than we expected. That's why disaster will be happen. Should we confront nature to protect our life? Can we coexist with nature? I propose a new typology of housing which coexist with nature along the lake. This housing is not strong but could be escape from disaster and produce energy from nature power itself.

This ecological system contribute to reduce the disaster from now on.

This scroll is drawn with scanned material in this strip during the workshop. When I visit the strip, I could find this kind of bird, therefore I focused on system of the bird. Birds can fly to use the energy of nature with light form. This bird structure can be transrated into architecture. The strong and light bone can be Aluminium, FRP, Wood. The soft and light skin can be Acrylic, Expand metal, Curtain.

-Typology of flood disaster prevention-

-System of floating-

03 / Floating House

We can classify typology of flood disaster prevention into 4 categories generally. It's made strong to against the flood disaster. At this time, I will propose new typology which is not strong but can be against the flood disaster. If water comes to the site, this house accept water and can use water power to prevent itself.

This house is build with light structure and soft skin to make weight lightly. It has air pocket under the 1st floor therefore it will get floating power from the water. Because of this system, this house has contrast which is opened 1st floor and closed -1st floor. It will be living, dining, kitchen, kids room on the 1st floor, on the other hand it will be bed room, bathroom, stock room, machine room on -1st floor.

04 / 多移庵 / TAI-AN

This workshop was 3D scanning the building and landscape as the point cloud and recording the sound at Ruriko-in temple in Kyoto.

04 / 多移庵 / TAI-AN

In the general design process, we make a modelling of building and combine with the site photos with Photoshop to consider it. However, as a result of 3D scanning it is possible to consider the building on the point cloud in real time. It will be the occasion to get new ideas. We give a presentation only the visual information such as drawing and perspective generally. However in the actual experience, sound information is also one of the most important factors. From this result of research, I designed a small pavilion in the garden. This pavilion has a strong form as square plane, rectangular roof and diagonal partition. This partition cut out the fragments of the landscape even delicate events such as minor or seasonal changes which hide in daily life. As the result of this workshop, I made a short movie.
