Unmasked: Overcoming the New Normal HOLY CHILD’s Blended Learning Experience

motivated to work more independently. Some students are also satisfied with distance learning. But few others feel uncomfortable spending several class hours on computers; other students think that quality education can’t take place without faceto-face interaction with their teachers. Furthermore, the results of the survey also show students who are experiencing dilemmas over some activities that they used to do while there was still no pandemic. Among these are meeting their classmates and instructors face-to-face, driving, or commuting to school. Additionally, the parents also shared their views about the current situation and the present form of education given to their children. Most of them were confident in their ability to make their children meet their learning needs and school requirements. Some also believe that their children are more likely focused entirely on doing academic works while at home. But others still think that their children may have too many school activities even after school hours. Like the students, parents are also satisfied with the present distance learning because, with the growing cases of Covid19, they feel secure when they see their children just inside their houses. In general, both students and parents of the institution preferred distance learning as a method of teaching and learning. They see more advantages of conducting this type of learning modalities in this “new” norm than other modality. But this did not stop them to think of continuing the traditional way of education setting – physical, face to face classroom set up. To conclude, the surveys were administered to the HOLY CHILD students and parents, as respondents may provide us with good ideas and results about how their experiences during the present situation affect their learning. Through this, we continue to study and gather the information that may be helpful in the transition during the new normal, the four corners of the classroom, the blending-in of education in the digital frontier, and the formulation of better approaches, modalities, and policies for our school and other private schools.
ducation has been one of the most affected areas by the Covid-19 pandemic as governments across the world implemented lockdown policies. Educators, however, do believe that learning should not halt. The pandemic crisis has instigated a lot of shifts in the society and has forced even the educational sector to do different experimentations of new designs and modalities of teaching and learning. Different schools have presented numerous answers to address the continuation of educational processes. These include the introduction of distance learning. In the Philippines, where Covid-19 cases continue to increase, “New normal” conditions in the school setting were also presented. However, challenges and issues were observed while implementing several approaches during the “new” normal. HOLY CHILD College of Davao was also not spared to experience this dilemma- learning to blend in the “new normal”. Learning to blend in the “new normal” should primarily be considered in the planning and implementation of the “new normal” educational policies. Schools are considered public places where large numbers of people are unavoidable, and children are vulnerable. Thus, HOLY CHILD College of Davao continuously implements different studies and surveys to get both the students’ and parents’ notions and experiences. These two-point-of-views may help in responding to issues, problems, and trends that are currently arising and may arise in the future due to the Covid-19 pandemic or other similar cases. We have gathered the responses of our students from the surveys that we have administered. By looking at the lens of the students’ perspective on the blended learning approach that the school has implemented, the study showed different spectrums of experiences ranging from positive to negative responses. Some students believe that online class teaching is helpful for their growth and their future career because they agree that the correct use of technology in the learning process will help them. Others also believe that they feel

nline learning has been widely promoted to replace traditional face-to-face learning during the COVID-19 pandemic to maintain young children’s learning and play at home. HOLY CHILD College of Davao has been advancing in meeting the educational needs of the students in the midst of crisis. The pandemic did not hinder the learning excitement of the students. JULY is the month of meeting the students and teachers together online. Mixed emotions were felt. Both students and teachers were excited and nervous at the same time, thinking of how it is going to be meeting each other in an online platform. However, the teachers did not fail to see the happy faces of the students and that they were so delighted seeing their classmates and friends.
Kinderville MathSci Experiments
S
eptember was MATHSCI month. In this month, Preschool pupils engaged in different meaning activities. The kids enjoyed doing different experiments such as Sinks or Floats, Erupting Volcano, Soda and Balloon with Mentos, and Mung Planting among others. Parents were also participative and supportive in their child’s activity which also gave them the opportunity to bond at home while learning together at the same time. There was also the Math and Movement activity which also helped develop the mathematical skills of the kids while dancing and exercising. It was indeed a month of fun and learning.

A
teacher is a friend, philosopher, and guide who holds our hand, opens our mind, and touches our heart. The contribution of a teacher cannot be ignored at all. Teaching is the most influential job in the world. As we know, Teachers are known to shape the mind of youth and without knowledge no one can exist in this world. Teachers impart good value in children and turn them into responsible citizens. In the month of OCTOBER, the world gives honor and appreciation to all our teachers. They should be celebrated. HOLY CHILD College of Davao, once again, participated in this celebration. The students and parents sent messages and presents through different platforms to show their care, appreciation, and love to their beloved parents in school. Also, in the month of October, we celebrated United Nations. The students were thrilled to wear their respective national costumes and represent the country that they chose. Our adorable kids shared simple greetings using the language of the country they represented. It was indeed fun speaking in different languages.

MathSci Month: Accelerate with AIMS

timulate imagination, problem-solving, logical thinking, and a lot more with a strong Math and Science background and foundation. Pupils, as early as their primary years, engage and learn from different online platforms while having fun at the same time. Last September 2020, HOLY CHILD College of Davao, spearheaded by the Math and Science Departments, launched Math and Science Month (MathSci Month) with the theme: “Digital Transformation Accelerated with AIMS, e-Activities Integrating Math and Science.” Various activities were prepared for our Primary Learners which will surely fuel their interest to learn more about Math and Science.[Students] got the chance to do activities which include Mobile Observatory, Physics Studio, Cubex, Sudoku Number Picture Matching, Bubble Buster, Counting Pizza Party and a lot more. Brainpop Jr., an animated educational site for kids, was one of the activities that they experienced. Furthermore, students also got the chance to become “The Genius of MathSci Play” where they had first-hand experience of doing experiments. These experiments were Rock Candy Lab, Hot and Cold Water Density, Elephant Toothpaste and Mini Fan at Home. The Science Department, headed by the Science Coordinator, Teacher Ruth S. Gamelo, partnered with the organization Kids Who Farm to promote Urban Container Gardening and tackle Food Security in general. Through this activity, kids knew and understood more about the value of planting and harvesting their food which will sustain and nurture them every day. Without a doubt, the celebration of MathSci Month has transformed our students in numerous sustainable ways.

elcoming a new school year amidst a pandemic was a great challenge for every academic institution. Education shifts had to be studied, learned and simulated before the school year officially starts. HOLY CHILD College of Davao never ceased to adapt to educational shifts caused by the pandemic. Last July 2020, HOLY CHILD College of Davao officially welcomed all the students and parents for the School Year 2020-2021. Primary pupils were initially welcomed by their respective Level Coordinators and later met by their class advisers and subject teachers. The meet and greet sessions commenced with praise and worship, reading of the Bible Verse and sharing of reflections. To get to know each other even more, the teachers introduced fun games and question and answer portions. For primary pupils, these were great means to build rapport with their teachers and classmates virtually. The pupils then were given the chance to introduce themselves. Despite the technological adjustments and limitations, the meet and greet session was a success. It’s a new beginning, a fresh, bright year for all the students and teachers.
UNITED NATIONS MONTH
E
very school year, HOLY CHILD College of Davao celebrates United Nations Month. This year, the pandemic did not halt us from continuing this tradition. There
were various activities for the students to improve their skills. One of the activities I took part in required me to make an artwork discussing my interpretation on how to preserve the world from the coronavirus. While thinking of how to best deliver my work, I had a lot of fun because I spent most of my time preparing and even brainstormed with my family. Before the pandemic, we had a lot of fun and exciting activities

because everyone worked together to achieve a certain goal or skill. Though this year’s experience was different from before, we all thought that the purpose of these events is to enrich our knowledge on United Nations, be aware of its achievements and be one in understanding its vision while having fun as well. Overall, this year’s UN month celebration was a great experience.

avid Archer once said, “Literacy is the fertilizer needed for development to take root and grow.” Let our ultimate goal be to understand the world we live in and participate in our community with less or no barriers. Last November 9, 2020, HOLY CHILD College of Davao celebrated the month of Literacy with the theme, “Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond.” Along with this was our tagline, “Transmit Knowledge. Promote Social Participation.” Spearheaded by the English Department, It was the time of the year when students were given opportunities to develop varied competencies through joining different activities such as the 3-Day Vocabulary Challenge for the Primary learners, Declamation Challenge for Middle-Grade learners, Oratorical Speech Challenge, and Speak Up Challenge exclusively for Junior High School learners, and ESSAY COMPOSITION CHALLENGE open to all Middle Graders and Junior High School learners. During the 3-Day Vocabulary Challenge, which took place last November 9-13, 2020, the Primary learners who took the time to share their knowledge were featured on the official Facebook page of the

English Club, HOLY CHILD English Literacy Enthusiasts (ENLITE). Furthermore, participants in the remaining activities were also featured on the same Facebook page. Students discovered their interests and talents while developing values and uphold competencies. The only difference was that they participated in these activities using varied online platforms. This program aimed to embark on transformation by deepening their sense of belonging and social integration. This month, we envisioned developing our students’ skills in different aspects particularly their proficiency in macro skills amidst the limitations brought by the pandemic. With the help of our students’ parents and teachers, this month-long celebration was indeed a success. As the month ended, we acknowledged our learners for their participation in the varied activities. Despite the transition to the online platform, HOLY CHILD College of Davao endeavors to overcome these challenges and still promote active learning. Moreover, we see this time not as a year of misery, but a bridge to hope that whatever affects the delivery of quality education and hinders the acquisition of literacy will be overcome.

HOLY CHILD SIGNED MOU WITH KWF Mikko Canarias
F
arming plays a significant role in the Philippine Economy. It involves 36 percent of Filipino Workers and contributes 20 percent of the Gross Domestic Product. Agriculture, in general, is the key economic driver of the economy, especially in rural areas. Farmers have great importance and role in society because they are the ones who cultivate and grow the food we need for proper living. However, a farmer’s job is sometimes stigmatized as a dirty poor man’s job. The Philippines is in danger of a possibility to face a massive extinction of farmers with the recent census of 16 to 89 years old Filipinos have shown that the majority of our farmers’ age range from 50 to 59 years old, with an average of age 53 years old. A farmer’s job, if not addressed significantly, will become a dying job. Another key factor is the rapid spread of urbanization to the farmlands; and has chased down every plot of land intended for farming to create housing and commercial spaces. With fewer farmers who plant and farmlands to cultivate, production will become less, and prices of the basic necessities like fresh food will also inflate. These two key factors are issues that are a threat to the country’s food security. If we can teach the kids a fun way to farm and earn from it, what would the world be if the youth will be at the forefront in addressing its food security? To address these impending issues of food security and extend its community partnerships, HOLY CHILD College of Davao inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with KIDS WHO FARM (KWF) last January 26, 2021, via Google Classroom. KWF is an initiative founded by a father and daughter team Munneer and Raaina Hinay based in Zamboanga City that aims to teach kids, out of school youth, and women about the importance of farming and

food production through fun online classes like urban container gardening. HOLY CHILD’s partnership with KWF drew back from August of 2020 when KWF was invited to become one of HOLY CHILD’s guest speakers on a webinar about urban container gardening. Its success was then followed by another webinar and now in partnership with HOLY CHILD Earth Warriors Club. Students, parents, and teachers who joined the webinars have sent their photos and success stories after trying their own backyard mini gardens. It was fun to see kids, knowing the importance of food production at a very young age. Present during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding were Ms. Jeanine Angeli L. Leuterio, HOLY CHILD Vice-President for Admin, and Mr. Muneer Hinday, Co-founder of Kids Who Farm Initiative, are holding the signed Memorandum of Understanding between HOLY CHILD College of Davao and Kids Who Farms Initiative were joined with Engr. Ma Chrystella Velasco, MEP, GDTIMS, Ph.D., HOLY CHILD Vice-President for Academics and External Affairs, Ms. Amiya Shayne, member of Kids Who Farm, Ms. Ruth Gamelo, HOLY CHILD Science Coordinator, and Mr. Koii Canarias, HOLY CHILD Sports Designate and Strategic Communication Manager. With the newly signed partnership with KWF, HOLY CHILD will be having series of activities and more technology transfer webinars that will aim to establish and replicate the success of KWF in Zamboanga City to Davao City. These activities will also include training on hydroponics, agro-enterprise, financial interest, and youth participation in community development. In the face of the pandemic, HOLY CHILD has seen this opportunity to reach out to more communities to help them ease down the effects and struggles everyone is facing during this time of uncertainty. It was also last year when HOLY CHILD partnered with the city’s agriculture office to help displaced farmers during the pandemic through the HOLY CHILD Online Community Market. Now, the partnership with KWF is just one of many others that the school is aiming to do. HOLY CHILD is now looking forward to partner with various local communities, corporate companies, and different organizations to make these endeavors even more possible and successful.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS DROP OFF
Jesus Christ. It is a season of sharing, kindness and giving. It is when we wrap our gifts and get together at parties. But last year’s Christmas was never like any other we experienced. We were limited from doing our usual Christmas activities. Although limited, HOLY CHILD College of Davao continued to uphold its values and traditions. We may not have our usual grandiose parties where we celebrate together with our students, teachers and friends, but we still managed to make our Christmas meaningful through the Operation CHRISTmas DropOff. The Operation CHRISTmas DropOff was an initiative of the school that aims to teach our students and stakeholders the value of showing little acts of kindness through sharing their blessings to those who are in need. The activity’s goal was to inculcate to them that Christmas is truly the season of heartily giving and sharing, traits that will never cease. Operation CHRISTmas Drop off became a successful activity because students, parents, teachers, and alumni have readily shared items that will be helpful for our school’s modern day heroes, the frontliners and those who have served in dedication while risking their lives. The activity has proven that despite the challenges that we are facing right now we can still celebrate Christmas with a purpose. And that purpose was to show how we truly understand the importance and ture meaning of Christmas even in a season of uncertainty.

e have come across a terrifying hurdle, the covid-19 pandemic, which we continue to face up until now. Nevertheless, we still have chosen to live in the spirit of Christmas. The Philippines was not spared as the virus spread around the world. We were bounded into our homes as quarantine measures pushed for stricter health and safety protocols. Social gatherings were prohibited and face-to-face classes were no longer feasible. In the onslaught of the pandemic, many had suffered loss of loved ones, displaced jobs and employees, closed businesses, and the economy literally went down. Then, Christmas came. Christmas, as we all know, is the time when we celebrate the birth of our Saviour

C
hristmas is a time when families, friends and loved ones gather together to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. But last year I’ve experienced more

than that. HOLY CHILD College of Davao celebrated it in a new normal way. Though it is not celebrated like it used to be because of the crisis we are facing today, with each other’s strength, selected students, faculty and alumni pulled it off together, HOLY CHILD College of Davao celebrated it in a new normal way. The teachers celebrated it with singing, tambourine dancing and praising unto God. Personally, it’s the experience that I can’t forget because I’ve been part of it. Every afternoon, we used our time to practice our tambourine dancing and Christmas carol for recording. It wasn’t easy because we were for perfection to avoid repeating it during the final record. All teachers that had been part of it gave their best to perform the expected outcome. During our practices, I’ve also developed a good relationship with my co-teachers from the different campuses. Tambourine dancing, I think, was the hardest part but we shared ideas to each other on how to fit all the steps in the music. All the arrangements, including the choreography and making steps, are very challenging for us at the same time we had a lot of fun. I thanked God for all the opportunities He has given to share my talents and used it for His glory. In these trying times, we should not let our situation stop us from doing what is right, good and noble in the eyes of God. I praised and thanked God for all these experiences because it has developed my character as a teacher and as a person. All the glory and honor belongs to Him alone. colleagues. But because of the pandemic, people welcomed this season with mixed emotions. Most families cannot meet and gather as one to celebrate Christmas. Some faced it with fear and loss of hope while others tried to make it as merry as the previous years were, continually having that positive spirit. HOLY CHILD College of Davao chose the latter: having that positive and hopeful spirit. In line with this, the institution still continued its tradition of decorating the different campuses with ornaments to welcome CHRISTmas. In this way, personnel, parents, students and clients will be reminded that Jesus is the reason for this season and that there is hope. Each campus had its unique theme. The Kalayaan campus was filled with gift boxes of different sizes reminding us that Jesus is the greatest gift we received in life. The Green Meadows campus delivered the message of rejoicing, for Jesus is here; while the Trinity Campus was filled with bright stars symbolizing Jesus as our light and hope especially in this difficult situation. Though the three campuses had different themes, one thing that is common is the manger. This manger reminded us of the humble coming of Jesus here on earth and His love for mankind. Some problems and trials may still be there, but one small step or action to make people happy and hopeful made a big difference and impact in people’s lives.

Did you sing along with them? Christmas caroling is probably one of the memorable and exciting activities that most of us enjoyed with during Christmas season especially if we were with our friends or loved ones. Christmas won’t be that lively and gaily without songs of Christmas that remind us about the birth of Jesus in a musical form. Traditionally, we often do caroling from different houses around the neighborhood or sometimes explore other places that adds excitement to us. Though, others tend to stay at home and do caroling within their family, doing it outside is really a different thing. Unfortunately, Christmas caroling outside our places was put into silence due to the worldwide
health crisis – the CORONA VIRUS PANDEMIC. Holy Child College of Davao and even other establishments restrict social movements and physical interaction inside and outside their community. This is to prevent us from the spread of the virus and to follow government protocols. Now, what would happen to the traditional Christmas Caroling? How can we make Christmas 2020 merry if singing together with our friends and family no longer allowed? Through the efforts and initiative of the Holy Child College of Davao administration and the participation of the stakeholders and outside community, the HCCD Virtual Christmas Carol was made possible. The said program featured a new way to do caroling despite of the pandemic through the use of technology and social media. Participants performed different Christmas songs just inside their houses. Parents, students, alumni and even teachers indulged themselves in singing virtually that proved that no matter the distance is, our hearts to give glory and to celebrate the birth of Jesus will be known to all in all way. Performances were featured via Facebook Page of Holy Child College of Davao, thus influencing different people to celebrate and sing with us virtually. According to James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change”, the verse has reminded us that even if the world has changed because of the different crisis we are facing with, the Light, who is Jesus Christ, will never change and will always give His light for us, His people. Our life is His perfect gift for us, so it is just right to give Him our talent through singing our praises and adoration for all the things He has done in our life not just in Christmas time but for all eternity.

However, practicing and understanding the importance of extending gratitude without costing a leg will make a huge change of how life is perceived!

Senior High School students of Trinity Campus’ December was indeed a tiring one. After all, it was the end of the first semester. Every Senior High School (SHS) student was almost at the peak of mental breakdown. Cramming, sleepless nights, studying and reviewing, and beating all of the deadlines of activities and written works is what the month of December was. Luckily, every student made it to the second semester without too much of a chaotic series of events. Moving forward, what catches the interests of each of SHS student was the newly announced Christmas activity; the Gratitude Jar. It made students freeze to wonder how perfect the timing is to conduct such activity centralising on expressing gratitude in times of Christmas. Students were given the instructions that the Gratitude Jar should be made up of recycled materials, which was a very economical way of showcasing the students’ competitive artistic sides. It also should be made with the presence of an
JAR OF HOPE The hope of humanity is threatened by the wrath of COVID-19. Millions of lives are devoured by a propagating microorganism. Homes became prisons of innocents. Interaction and not wearing face masks are considered crimes. Mankind sees its boat lose the paddle. As the world is being dominated by an unseen enemy, people are in conquest to search for a reason to thrive. While the outside world is in combat, a war inside every person also began. The lives of humankind are anchored in the middle of the sea. The string that connects the anchor and the boat needs to be cut off to cease the peril to our hope. But when humanity needed power to ignite, it was stolen by the clamor caused by the virus. Like lights at the end of the tunnel, teachers Trisha Vanne A. Vitor and Geselle Joy Tingal were able to curtail negativity and bring hope to every Senior High School student
important family or relative. This empty decorated jar must be filled with vibrant papers that has a written thought of unsaid appreciation. The said activity was aimed to connect students to their beloved ones and, most especially, to God who bestows blessings upon everyone who tends to forget about all the good things. Also, the activity was a reminder that life has so much to offer, and God is pouring His grace upon everyone. To showcase the products in this activity, social media was used to send forth the message of expressing gratitude in their own unique way. The masterpieces of the SHS students in Trinity Campus are captioned with a bible verse taken from 2 Thessalonians 5:18, together with the use of multiple hashtags. After the hectic and challenging days, it should be remembered to always take a pause and utter a simple thanks to what God has given you and the instruments he used to keep you breathing.

Derived from the performance task on “Gratitude Jar”, small pieces of papers were rolled and inside of those are the compelling phrases that can strike the darkness ruling an individual’s feet which has halted them to walk towards the light. “Through this activity, students can showcase their creativity in making the Jar”, Ms. Vitor said. The jars would then be designed by students according to their desired preferences─ glitters, colored papers and any other art materials that boast the appearance of the empty and listless jar. Teacher Vitor also indicated the importance of gratitude towards God amidst the Pandemic. In this time, we are not just a prisoner of our own homes but also of our thoughts. ACT OF GIVING In Africa, there are large antelopes called Impala that engage in customs not unlike humans. An Impala grooms the neck of another Impala, and the other returns the favor, and grooms the first Impala for an equivalent amount of time, both having a mutual understanding of gratitude. It is truly quite fascinating for wild animals to also practice the concept of giving thanks. As far more sentient beings, humans have come up with a million grand gestures, and a thousand more ways to say, ‘thank you’. When the blessings are great, the praise and the thanks are tenfold. Gratitude Jars are only one of the many creative innovations that mankind has offered in the field of appreciation. Tiny pieces of paper with words of thanks and sweet notes that would melt even the coldest of hearts, enclosed in a jar decorated with colorful ribbons that practically scream, “open me!”. We offer these to people who stood by us in dark times, who have extended their hands when all we got were closed fists, and who have touched our lives without knowing. That is why, the Holy Child College of Davao - Green Meadows Campus joined the Gratitude Jar initiative. This activity started just this December 2020, with the faculty riding on the Christmas spirit of generosity, encouraging the students to make it their way of life to be grateful daily. The event was met with success as the Grade-11 students of the aforementioned campus showcased their ingenuity as they posted pictures of their creations online which garnered enormous support from netizens. Moreover, it enabled the students to learn about gratefulness. To receive a gratitude jar is wonderful, but in creating one, you allow yourself the liberty of expression, to hold no boundaries in showing how you truly feel. It is truly as it was written in Acts 20:35, which says “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” There is joy in the act of giving, especially if it is in giving back.
