GENERATING A COMMON FRAMEWORK BETWEEN POLARITIES Project: urban complex: market, commerce, housing Place: Bogota, Colombia Type: Master Graduation project University: TU Delft Task: research and design based on the idea of “commons” in Bogota Teachers: Jorge Mejia Hernandez, Klaske Havik, Pierre Jennen Year: 2016

We should not try to forecast what will happen, but try to make provisions for the unforeseen. // N.J. Habraken, 196I

Due to rapid growth, specific historic events and certain political/urban planning decisions the city of Bogota shaped what is now clearly visible as polarities or two subcenters that emerge inside of Bogota city center. I decided to zoom in on the edges of theses polarities of “Los Martires” and the current “Center of power”. The main goal of the project is to find connecting points between contradicting areas without dismantling differences or diversity. By integrating different kind of activities into alternative type of urban framework I seek to create interactive relations and the place for coexistence. The concepts of “Stem” by Shadrach Woods and “Open building” by John Habraken are very influential to my project. Even though both of them originate around 60’s, I found them very useful as tools to achieve my design goals and test the operationality of concepts in totally different Latin American context while trying to adapt it to new urban questions arising in Bogota. To my mind, nowadays these ideas could again become highly relevant dealing with urban polarities, managing informality or responding to socio-economic problematics. In my proposal, “Stem” as a concept for urban design brings the possibility of order in urban scale circulation and connectivity as well as the new interpretation of layered street life. This predetermined order is able to accommodate diversity and informality. Considering Habraken’s “Open building“ concept, the complex could also it be translated into levels of “support” and “infill” that mean distinct decision making and design levels. As I propose to design mainly support level I assume that the infill level would be influenced by great variety of stakeholders and the multitude of ownership would create a possibility for variety and change in time. Sense of ownership would also increase the sense of responsibility and interest towards built environment as well as create some sort of “order in chaos”. As the complex could transform in time and work both top-down and bottom-up, it would become the fertile ground for “Commons” to emerge.

WUNDERKAMMER Project: science center and student housing Place: Plantage, Amsterdam Type: personal academic project Task: research based “invisible landmark - panorama building” in Plantage University: TU Delft Teachers: Kees Kaan, Aldo Trim, Afaina de Jong Year: 2015

Plantage is the neighborhood in Amsterdam that is recognizable by its reputation to be the place for curiosities and education. Rather detached from the rest of the city center by canals, it is also crowded with institutions and lacks critical mass of residents and commercial activities to become a strong neighborhood. As I had a goal to connect different people (students at UvA, visitors, residents and business representatives) the idea was to create a multifunctional complex that would be a catalisator between all those groups. The 80’s block of St Jacobs next to Plantsoen Plantage Westermanlaan would be demolished as it was already planned. The chapel inside of the block is monumental and could create a new entrance for new block. The concept for the complex is to create science and technology center (free standing object) that would connect students, visitors and business as well as would be surrounded by student/starter housing block with commercial function on the ground floor and lush green courtyard. It enhances the image of typical introvert building block of Plantage (closed from outside and very green inside). In front of the chapel the new public green square would be created that would be connected well with the bridge leading to UvA as well as the street and would replace the absence of Plantsoen Plantage Westermanlaan. All this complex has a poetic reference to Panorama building (former landmark of the site) and Wunderkammer that connects greatly with Plantage identity. From Panorama building it takes spatial organisation with projected enclosed entrance and exactly the same section silhouette of the main hall. Wunderkammer, or cabinet of curiosities, arose in mid-sixteenth-century Europe as repositories for all manner of wondrous and exotic objects. This science and technology center would present a contemporary interpretation of the traditional cabinet of curiosities.

INBETWEEN Project: pavilion bridge Place: Toulouse, France Type: personal academic project Task: To design a pavillion using Canal du Midi as inspiration University: TU Delft Teachers: Oscar Rommens, Micha de Haas Year: 2015

Canal du Midi is not only a historic technological marvel but It also brings a certain kind of atmosphere and quality it is known for. The perception of the interior edge is a crucial part of the canal atmosphere and image. It can be perceived and deconstructed into several different layers: rhythm, transparency and color. Moving along the canal creates always changing shift in layers. Manipulation of those layers reflects the variety of ways to experience the canal as a semi–transparent layered space. The part of the canal that I chose for my design in the city of Toulouse is recognized as the beginning of the Canal du Midi. Even though the position of the canal is rather important for the city structure it is surprisingly neglected and underused. I chose the existing lock in front of the Central Toulouse station. The second chamber of the lock is covered with supporting concrete beams. This is the place I chose to reintroduce the new experience of the Canal du Midi. The aim of the new structure over the canal is to recreate the layered atmosphere of the canal and make a passerby familiar with the presence of water and it’s movement as an essential parts of the canal experience. The existing Bayard lock has a biggest canal drop of 6.7 meters. However, only one of the two chambers are used in a lock because the second chamber needed to be strengthened with previously mentioned concrete structure. I propose to let this second chamber to be used as a lock and existing structure to be used as a multiple bridge for the busy area. Color layers are introduced; every layer is separate and wrapped around the existing beam while floating on the pontoons in the canal water. Passerby has a chance to choose how to go inbetween different layers and manipulate the layered transparent views on the sides. When the boat passes, it directly affects the level of layers: it goes up and down 3.5m depending on the water level and creates changing volume and experience form outside and inside of the pavillion/bridge. The layers are made of light hollow steel tube construction and covered with light colored polyester mesh. Its transparency and floating ripples creates the sensation of lightness and levitating atmosphere.

CONGRESS CENTER AND HOTEL Project: Congress center and hotel Task: A Congress Center which would suit city needs. The site of the project is determined. The size, program and scenario are free to choose. Place: Kaunas, Zemoji Freda Type: personal final Bachelor project University: VGTU Size: 10206 m2 + hotel Year: 2013

As congress center should be a representative object of the city, revealing and strengthening Kaunas architectural and urban identity, I devoted the center for congress (+conference, concert) and hotel functions to make the complex constantly lively. Congress wing was detalised in greater detail. The main iconic view of the compex is created by two main volumes: congress center volume and hotel volume. Both of them are connected by pedestrian ramp that also serves as a roof for other functions. New public spaces created: park inbetween two cultural buildings, common entrance square, pedestrian ramp, marina with stairs, hotel terrace. Architectural concept of the congress center part is to have this easily understandable building as „open source“ then people flows are free and easy. It is created with transparent volume with the main auditorium in the middle which could be walked around while having an opportunity to look around to the different directions of townscape. The main entrance and lobby opens to common entrance square for congress center and hotel. This square also has under-pedestrian-ramp connection to waterfront. Main auditorium lobby is on the other side of the building and is orientated to Nemunas island. Both passage/galleries are orientated either directly to Nemunas river or the the hillside. So this building becomes all-direcion open viewpoint. Upper levels have fluent people flows around main auditorium which on sides are covered with smaller meeting rooms and auditoriums. Number of seats in auditorium – 1450.

ARCHITECTURE CENTER EXTENSION Project: Architecture Center renovation project Task: To renovate and expand the existing Architecture Union building in Vilnius into Architecture Center. Place: Vilnius city center Type: personal academic project Size: 4931m2 Year: 2012

Renovation object - Architects Union building (future architecture center). The plot is situated next to the crossing of streets. It is situated in the very heart of Vilnius city, on the crossing of the street. There is also Neris river to the south of the building (and bridge) that influences the situation a lot. The situation around existing building is very contrast. It’s not only because of clearly different and contrasting heights of the buildings but also style, construction year, etc. The building is quiet small and delicate comparing to some of other surrounding buildings. Most of it’s facades are heritage protected. The concept of renovation+extension is to create new expression for architectural forms in contrast to existing structure but at the same time emphasize it without putting it to the shade. Proposed frame structure of extension works as opening gates for the castle attracting attention to the building in the background as well as leading to new open gallery spaces under upper yard. So it creates two yards/areas – public (lower yard) and architects (upper yard). Gallery space works as a mixing bowl from which people can get easily to all other parts of buildings. Functionally building is also divided into more public and working. As a result, new extension hosts public functions as gallery, info centre and library. The existing building hosts offices, conference hall, meeting rooms, „lounge tree“, administration, etc. “Workshop tree” is located in existing courtyard. It is an open glazed space with the climbing structure of working places in the middle and restaurant space on the ground level. Underground pedestrian connection allows to create easy accessibility and lively public square.

JAKARTA HOTEL Project: hotel competition Place: Java island, Amsterdam Designed by: SeARCH Part taken: planning, facades, schemes, physical model, competition material preparation State: winning proposal Size: ~10800 sq m Year: 2014

PROFESSIONAL

The winning proposal of Hotel Jakarta, is situated at the very edge of Java island. Given the prominent location, the city council wanted a unique hotel concept, not only in its architecture, but also in its public programming and sustainability. Hotel Jakarta symbolizes Amsterdam’s historic maritime connection with Asia and feels like a second living room to both the curious globe-trotter and the neighbours and other inhabitants of the city of Amsterdam. It is designed as a true public building, as a lively corner stone of the city. Characteristic is the dynamic public ‘pasar’ with various bars, restaurants and coffee corners, a wellness centre and cultural activities, built as a ‘sawa’ around the central subtropical garden which is publically accessible through the transparent façade. Unique for the Netherlands is its 30 m high load-bearing structure in wood. The design and maintenance of the subtropical garden is a result of a collaboration with the Hortus Botanicus and the Royal Tropical Institute assisting with the cultural planning. NDSM terrein
