Founded in 1951, this year marks the Museum’s 70th anniversary. The museum has over 500,000 years of history under one roof, from local fossils millions of years old up to artefacts from the last century in our 1950s post war room. The most famous displays are: - A replica of the famous Mildenhall Treasure, a RomanoBritish collection of exquisite, silver tableware found at West Row in 1942. The priceless original is in the British Museum in London. - The skeletons of the Lakenheath Warrior and his horse with lavish grave goods, found in 1997 at the excavation of an Anglo-Saxon burial site on RAF Lakenheath. - The Great Air Race in 1934 from Mildenhall Airbase to Melbourne, Australia which attracted worldwide attention and a visit by King George V, Queen Mary and the Prince of Wales.

The museum also has early photographs of Mildenhall Airbase and its importance in World War 2 is displayed in uniforms, equipment and model aircraft. In addition we have the Stirling Society memorial dedicated to those who served on the base during the war. There are many other galleries which give an insight into the past life and times of the area which was predominantly fenland and sandy Breckland. You can glimpse life in a Mildenhall cottage during the Victorian and Edwardian eras and a house in the 1950s. We also have a parade of shop windows from the Victorian and Edwardian eras including haberdashery, photography and children’s toys. The cellar houses a display of carpentry tools and dairy equipment for butter making.

The museum has temporary exhibitions in the modern community room which is also used for society meetings and prearranged group and school visits. We can serve refreshments if requested. You can view old photographs of Mildenhall and surrounding
