letterfrompublishers We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. ~Native American Proverb

E

arth Day is celebrated globally on April 22 which corresponds to spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. It is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment. In 2009, the United Nations designated April 22 International Mother Earth Day.

contact us Publishers

Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson in response to an oil spill and widespread environmental degradation in 1969. The first Earth Day was a teach-in, observed on university campuses and held on April 22, 1970. Earth Day was a national event until Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations.

Doug Zerbarini Terry Chriswell Assistant Editors Sharon Bruckman S. Alison Chabonais

Earth Day is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network and is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year. Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues. Nelson said,

Design & Production Courtney Ayers

“Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself.”

EcoScraps Expands into Colorado

E

coScraps, a company which recycles food waste into a nutrient-rich soil conditioner, is now servicing Colorado. According to their website, Ecoscraps “transforms leftover fruits and veggies into highly nutritious, 100% organic soil through a special process similar to composting…Basically, we collect produce waste from grocery stores and wholesale food distributors, and then take them to our plant to be processed. All of the food we collect has gone bad and would otherwise be thrown away and taken to the dump.” Through this process they are able to reduce landfill waste and methane emissions. Harvest Plenty Premium Soils will be delivered first to Spencer’s Lawn and Garden in Fountain, Echter’s Greenhouse in Arvada, Jared’s Nursery in Littleton, Picadilly’s Nursery in Brighton, and Nick’s Garden Center & Farm Market in Aurora. ecobriefs Earth Care Women’s Leadership for a Green Economy Earth Day Network’s new campaign, Women and Green Economy (WAGE), is engaging female executives in business, government and nongovernmental organizations to take leadership of the emerging global green economy. “Currently, women are not present in very many top international negotiations on climate change and the green economy,” says Earth Day Network President Kathleen Rogers. “We aim to change that equation.” Women such as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, are among those now leading key efforts in the climate and renewable energy discussion. “It is essential that our most talented and driven women come together to fast-forward the green economy,” says Rogers. With the world’s women making 85 percent of all consumer choices, they are in a commanding position to lead the way to a sustainable world. WAGE creates a road map for women to aggregate their power and promote their leadership in such issues. Earth Day Network’s supporting goals are to help prompt national and international initiatives that will promote the green economy, secure education and job training opportunities for women and channel green investment to benefit women. Action Alert Science Solves Mystery of Bee Colony Collapse Bees are dying off in developed Western countries, putting 90 percent of U.S. crops in peril. Multiple scientific studies now blame one group of agricultural toxins—neonicotinoid pesticides—as a major contributor to their rapid demise, and bee populations have recovered in the four European countries that have banned these products. But Bayer still sells this deadly poison here, even though the Environmental Protection Agency has recognized, in a leaked document, that Bayer’s “highly toxic” product is a “major risk concern to non-target insects [honey bees].” In 2009, Italy’s new, neonicotinoid-free corn sowing resulted in no cases of widespread bee mortality in apiaries around the crops, a first since 1999. Italy, France, Slovenia and Germany, where Bayer’s main manufacturing plant is located, have all banned neonicotinoids with good results. It’s up to U.S. citizens to convince the government not to heed the powerful chemical lobby, but to defend the bees and the country’s food supply by calling for a national ban now. Build a buzz today. Sign the emergency petition at Secure.Avaaz.org/ en/save_the_bees_usa/?vl.

No-Deprivation Diets & 3 Levels of Evolutionary EatingTM by Simla Somturk Wickless, MBA, CHC, CNE

D

o you find the idea of all diets distasteful? It doesn’t have to be that way for you to look and feel your best with an eating plan that is delicious, varied, flexible, rich and that works for your unique body and lifestyle. There are 3 Levels of Evolutionary EatingTM . LEVEL 1: Impulsive is the most primitive way of eating with very low bodily awareness. You go by the dictum “I want” and make choices mostly based on perceived convenience and immediate gratification. This level lends itself to mindless or emotional eating, unwanted weight gain, burnout/fatigue, and a host of chronic health issues. LEVEL 2: Inhibited is eating impulsively, driven by “shoulds,” calorie counts, deprivation, and strict rules. It is restrictive and can result in hunger, binges, dismay, and a contentious relationship with food. You may lose weight or feel better at first, but it’s temporary. LEVEL 3: Intuitive is when you’ve decided you’re ready for something better. You develop full-body awareness and make empowered, mindful choices built around real, whole foods that work for you. When you get to this point, your taste buds wake up. Your energy is on fire. Your moods blossom. You reach and maintain your natural weight equilibrium easily. Your way of eating is a way of being and you feel full and fully present to your life.

Evolving your relationship with food can help you stop with the fads, restrictions, and “shoulds” and discover a way of eating that your body, taste buds, and life can all thrive on. What is Organic Lawn Care? by Josh Studer

A

n organic lawn care program will help you protect the health of your children, your pets, yourself and allows you to make a healthier, “greener” choice for the environment. Synthetic fertilizers are known to possess many toxic chemicals and metals that are hazardous to humans and may contribute to serious diseases. These fossil-fuel-based synthetic fertilizers are energy-intensive and add salts and chemicals to the soil which hardens the soil and requires you use more water to achieve the same green lawn. High levels of chemicals can leach into ground water, poisoning our waterways also. Think grass on steroids; this is a similar comparison to what synthetic fertilizers do to grass. Organic lawn care provides slow release organic products that will promote active soil biology by mobilizing nutrients and microorganisms, retain water, and support natural plant growth. Benefits of organic fertilizers include: Reducing water needs up to 50%.; Lawns that are naturally resistant to disease and insects; Reducing the need to mow as often; Reduction of Carbon footprint and air pollution; Non-toxic, healthy living space for the whole family. A truly organic lawn care program will not use conventional gas mowers that pollute the environment at alarming rates. According to the EPA, small engines such as gas mowers contribute 5% of the nation’s air pollution. And, in one hour, 1 gas mower pollutes the same as 11 cars. You can benefit greatly by choosing organic lawn care or using an organic lawn care service. Not only are you doing your part to reduce the carbon footprint while keeping your loved ones free of toxic chemicals; your neighbors will appreciate it too. Josh Studer is with Clean Air Lawn Care Denver. 303-681-4543. Visit CleanAirLawnCareCherryCreek.com for a special “Come Clean” campaign to receive a free year of organic treatment. Go Green to Clean

A

ny family can benefit from green cleaning. When you clean green, you do not use any harmful chemicals or abrasive products in the cleaning process. Imagine the benefits of having bleach quality clean floors without having to have harmful, toxic bleach in your home. When you consider green cleaning supplies, the benefits to your own environment, and the overall environment are numerous. Many chemicals contain toxins, including poisonous elements, cancer causing irritants, skin irritants, and harmful products for your respiratory system and the air you breathe. There are many instances where you can easily ingest or inhale these products when they are sprayed into the air or applied to surfaces. Even trace amounts of some chemicals can and do build up in your system. Chemicals applied to counter tops or sponges will rinse down the drain into the water sources for your home. If there are a large amount of chemicals being used, the fumes from those chemicals can be dangerous coming up from the drain. Inhaling them can have immediate effects. Consider allergies. In some situations, chemicals found within cleaning products contain allergens. Bleaches, toxic cleaning sprays and other chemicals used to clean the home commonly contain a variety of ingredients specifically able to cause or trigger allergies in people. Children and the elderly are most likely to suffer from them, since they have weaker immune systems, but anyone can suffer from allergies, including your pets. Finding organic, green cleaning products and/services can be the answer you are looking for to detoxify your home, rid your family and pets of a slew of allergen responses and help the environment. See Green Cleaning Products and Services in the Community Resource Guide, page 23.

CHINESE MEDICINE TIPS FOR SPRING by Cindy Haxel

S

pring – seeds start to sprout, trees and flowers start to bud, animals seem to wake up, and the sunshine last longer. According to Chinese Medicine, spring is the time of the Liver and Gallbladder. In Chinese Medicine, the liver’s function is to help keep the body healthy and balanced by making sure the Qi (life force) within our body circulates without obstruction. The liver is responsible for the strength of our tendons, our eyes, and the smooth flow of Qi. When our Liver isn’t functioning properly we can get irritable, have menstrual or digestive issues. There are some very simple things you can do this spring to help have as healthy a liver as possible: • Do Tai Chi or Yoga. This exercise not only helps to move Qi throughout the body, but also helps to maintain flexibility in the tendons and connective tissues. • Let go of things you cannot control – things that make you angry. Holding on to anger and resentment only further constrains the Liver. • Cut down on your liver’s workload by decreasing alcohol, refined sugar, pesticides and herbicides. • Eat green, pungent foods. Radish, onion, garlic, peppermint, marjoram, coriander, leeks, dill, turmeric can all be helpful to move Liver Qi. (If your digestion is weak, stick to cooked vegetables – these are easier to digest). • Acupuncture and Oriental medicine can help improve the overall health of your liver as well as treat stress, anger and frustration, which are often associated with liver Qi disharmony. Cindy Haxel owns Cindy Haxel Acupuncture which can be found in the Golden Well Being Collective, 1113 Washington Ave., Suite 110, Golden. 303-956-5817. See listing page 23.

INTEGRATING CONVENTIONAL AND NATURAL MEDICINE FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH

“IT ’S IN YOUR HEAD!”

Neurotransmitters: the Symphony in your Brain Neurotransmitters are the little messenger-molecules that connect your brain cells with each other. They are the key players in your nervous system and influence how you feel, think, act, sleep, and affect how your body functions. In return, your emotions, sleep habits, and food choices can influence your neurotransmitters. Your neurotransmitters can be out of balance, with some too high and some too low, causing common problems like anxiety, depression, insomnia, mood swings and more. One common neurotransmitter is serotonin; low levels have been linked to depression and anxiety. Hormones, neurotransmitters and immune function are always connected; for example estradiol activates the serotonin receptor, its lack can cause mood disturbances, often common during menopause. Chronic inflammation can suppress serotonin production. Conventional treatment consists of a “SSRI”, a serotonin re-uptake inhibitor antidepressant, which will literally not allow the existing serotonin to “retire”. In the long run, this can deplete your brain of serotonin further. An alternative approach would be to modulate out-of-balance neurotransmitters carefully back into balance with naturally derived substances like amino acids, medicinal herbals, vitamins and minerals. For example, supplementation with a particular amino acid, which is the building block of serotonin, will enhance its presence in the brain. Treatment of Hormone imbalances and chronic inflammation will also help proper neurotransmitter function. Emotions, and even music and visuals, can stimulate specific brain regions resulting in release of neurotransmitters, influencing multiple aspects of your health. Therefore, it is important to address ill emotions through appropriate therapy and surround ourselves with pleasant stimuli to enhance success. Your body is a symphony of different systems, creating perfect harmony if played right, or discord if out of balance. It is essential to know about these intricate connections to tune our bodies into perfect instruments. Neurotransmitter testing can be the beginning of discovering and treating the underlying cause of what has been keeping you from enjoying perfect health. Ask for your Neurotransmitter test today.

Could Eczema be Caused by Your Stomach? by Dr. Nathan Kennedy DC

P

soriasis and Eczema can be a nightmare to live with. Cabinets full of creams, lotions and heavy makeup to hide the rough, scaly patches of skin. A connection may exist between your skin quality and your stomach acid. High stress levels put the body into “fight or flight” mode. Blood flow is diverted from the stomach to the muscles and stomach acid production is inhibited. A low stomach acid level is called hypochlorhydria and may occur gradually as we age also. Hypochlorhydria makes it difficult for the body to properly digest food and absorb the critical nutrients needed for great skin health. Proteins, carbohydrates and fats are not fully digested and micronutrient deficiencies may be the result. A common symptom is the “fish burps” after taking a fish oil supplement. This partially digested food causes inflammation as it slowly moves through the gut. Inflammation releases histamines causing an allergic reaction and dilating the vasculature in the gut. Leaky

10

MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com

gut syndrome and yeast infections are the result. High histamine levels can also cause the skin to become weak and fragile leading to redness, irritation and … eczema. Testing for hypochlorhydria may include a vitamin B-12 test or a high-tech diagnostic tool, the Heidelberg pH capsule. Once ingested, it will transmit detailed information about stomach acidity while you eat. Treatments may be as simple as taking a betaine hydrochloride supplement or small amounts of apple cider vinegar at the end of meals. Zinc, an important cofactor, may need to be supplemented. Eczema worsens during times of stress. Rather than treating the symptoms with pharmaceuticals, a skilled practitioner can uncover the hidden physical issues and use simple supplements and dietary changes as treatment. Strategies for minimizing stress such as exercise, meditation and others should also be employed. While this approach may not be the best one for everyone, the timeless wisdom to “first, do no harm” should dictate a simple, natural approach as a first course. Dr. Nathan Kennedy DC can be reached at Kennedy Wellness, 222 Milwaukee St. ste. 308, Denver. 303-3225015 or KennedyWellness.com. See listing page 23.

Local Naturopath Builds Mission in Haiti Denver Naturopath Jodi Winter and her husband Jim recently heeded the call for help from a Haitian pastor speaking at a local church. Jodi’s medical skills and Jim’s plumbing skills (Jim is a master plumber) were desperately needed in Haiti a year after the devastating quake changed life on the island forever. “Our daughter, Tauné, was a big believer and doer of helping others,” Jodi shares, “until an accident last year when she lost her life.” In memory of Tauné, and leading with their hearts, Jodi and Jim decided to take the challenging journey to La Chappelle, Haiti and build a mission house with their own funds for 3 weeks in January. Traveling to Port Au Prince, and staying with the pastor from whom they had heard the need, Jodi and Jim held a clinic in a “tent city” and saw over 700 people. Jodi and Jim brought drug store supplies ($4,000 worth of bandages and aspirin), and bought antibiotics in the city over the counter. Mike Grub from Professional Formulas also donated 1,000 doses of Intestaclear (worth $1,000), a broad spectrum herbal anti-microbial which helps rid the body of intestinal parasites. Next, Jodi and Jim traveled to La Chappelle and built the 4-bedroom mission house at a cost of $15,000. They named it Tauné’s Hope. They found materials all over town…wood from a man in the village cutting trees, someone making bricks. Among other things, they built toilets that flush, a leech field and a shower by diverting water from the mountains via a thin, above-ground pipe.

“The Haitian people are so resilient,” says Jodi.”Most people were very healthy although they had never seen a doctor, and they have wonderful close families. They have no distractions like we have here – no tv or phones, toys or radios, so they tell stories while whittling by the fire.” Jim even made tambourines out of bottle caps for the kids. Most of the meals were rice and beans, which the US government donates and the Haitian government in turn sells to the people. Jim and Jodi bought bags and bags to give away, and she says it was never enough. Thousands of children don’t have food and there is 98% unemployment. The Haitian people pay per light socket, and the electricity is spotty at best. In spite of the poverty, in Jim and Jodi’s honor, a goat was killed and goat stew was made for breakfast on the day of their departure. “Yes,” Jodi says, “I ate it.” Jim and Jodi are very happy to be home eating fresh vegetables again, and say it was a wonderful, challenging experience and they were thrilled to help the Haitian people. They will be returning in November to build the school. If you would like to donate money or other needed items, please donate to Tauné Winter Memorial Fund, c/o Jodi Winter, Integrative Health, Inc., 5191 S. Yosemite, Suite B, Greenwood Village, CO 80111. Jim Winter, Master’s Plumbing, 303981-3779. Action Alert Take a Stand Against Biotech Bullies Early this year, the United States government approved three genetically modified organism (GMO) crops— Monsanto’s Roundup Ready alfalfa and sugar beets, and Syngenta’s amylase corn developed to produce ethanol. Food Democracy Now, a grassroots community for a sustainable food system, is circulating an online petition objecting to these decisions that support biotech. Dozens of large food manufacturers and farm, food and agricultural organizations, both conventional and organic, are on board in opposing these lab-engineered food products for a variety of reasons, such as unknown health and environmental consequences, including genetic contamination. hether attendees at a typical Green Drinks gathering choose to sip a fine wine or organic lemonade, the emphasis is on socializing and networking for a “greener” world, one community at a time. Founded by friends Edwin Datschefski and Paul Scott at a London pub in 1989, Green Drinks currently includes more than 700 chapters worldwide. The first and largest North American group, Green Drinks New York City, was launched by Margaret Lydecker in 2002 and currently counts 14,000 members. After moving to the Big Apple, “I was having a hard time finding a community of like-minded people,” confesses Lydecker, a sustainability advisor who helps companies find greener options in the way they source products and services. She adds, “When you have an active dialogue with other environmentally conscious people in business or government, you begin to find answers and solutions.” Typically, groups around the country partner with a community sports bar, restaurant, or other food and drink establishment to host a Green Drinks event in a private room. The word goes out via email, Facebook, phone calls or postcards, and people come to meet other environmentally conscious people. Although these soirées sometimes include short talks by sustainability experts, they’re essentially casual. Yet in this setting, attendees can make connections that benefit the environment, businesses, the community—and themselves. John O’Neill reports that at one recent Green Drinks social hour in Port St. Lucie, Florida, the owner of a local environmental service business struck up a conversation with a restaurant owner. “The business agreed to take the leftover grease from the restaurant and use it on their farm,” reports O’Neill. “That’s exactly the kind of thing we want to see happen.” Jim Horlacher, the founder of Kansas City’s Green Drinks, admits, “I primarily do Green Drinks because I like it.” Although the relationship-building is definitely there, he adds, “It’s hard for me to quantify.” Horlacher is a financial planner for First Affirmative Financial Network, a group

that helps individual investors put their money where their socially and environmentally responsible values are. “People get to know me at Green Drinks events as someone who walks the walk and talks the talk,” he says. Although Green Drinks’ environmental mission is deliberately simple— attend, engage, connect—some groups take it further. The Seattle Green Drinks chapter also offers a host of more narrowly targeted member groups, including those who want to hear speakers on innovation in sustainability, support Native Americans or conserve wildlife. Says Seattle Drinks founder Gabriel Scheer, “I’m immensely proud of how the organization has taken a central role in growing our local environmental community.” A founding partner in Re-Vision Labs, which helps business and organizations incorporate social media and community organizing into their business models, Scheer concludes, “Green Drinks events are helping each community see itself.”

localinsights The Problem with Gluten Support Local Artists by Karin Dietrich, Master Nutritionist in “The Portal”

R

esearch shows that up to 40 percent of the population may have sub-clinical gluten intolerance. Eating ‘glutenfree’ has been growing in popularity for a reason. Gluten is a protein found in certain grains (wheat, rye, barley, spelt, bulgur, couscous, kamut, semonlina, triticale, and einkorn). Some people, and more likely those of Irish/English and Northern or Eastern European descent are unable to break down the gliadin portion of the gluten protein. This results in a toxic inflammatory reaction in the mucus lining of the wall of the small intestine and eventually leads to the destruction of the absorbing villi, leaky-gut syndrome and nutrient deficiencies. This condition may go undetected for years or decades before chronic health symptoms become obvious. Inflammation, hormonal balance, immune function and neurological balance can be affected. Children may experience asthma, allergies, reoccurring infections and upset stomach or milk intolerance. Gluten intolerance is rooted in the evolution of mankind from a hunter/gatherer existence to a settled agrarian lifestyle. Newly cultivated grains were brought into the diet which human bodies were not designed to digest. Wheat grains, almost inedible in their wild form, were cultivated to yield the large protein portion that is both nutritious and desirable for making bread, but containing the poorly digested gliadin amino acid chain. In fact, U.S. produced wheat is prized world-wide for its high gluten content! To unmask gluten-intolerance, simply avoid ALL glutencontaining food sources for a period of 3-4 weeks if not longer. Gluten is gradually reintroduced while signs and symptoms are observed. It is best to consult with a versed nutrition therapist who can guide in you in the process to eat 100% gluten free. Sometimes it is advisable to avoid other suspected offending foods with a ‘modified elimination diet’. If results are inconclusive, various advanced testing methods are available to identify if gluten or other foods may cause your problems. Karin Dietrich, MNT practices holistic nutrition therapy at Clear Sky Medical where she works with many patients on gluten-free diets. Gluten testing is also available. Ed Begley, Jr.’s

GREEN HOME

MAKEOVER Saving Energy and Cutting Waste is a Family Affair by Brita Belli

E

d Begley, Jr., widely regarded as America’s most environmentally aware actor—the one by which other green celebrities are measured— has never tired of the years of effort he and his family have made in making their home as green as possible. But this past year, his wife, Rachelle Carson-Begley, had had enough. She isn’t fed up with turning off lights or relying on solar power—she’s just grown weary of the home’s tiny closets and sharing one small bathroom between two adults and a soonto-be-teenage daughter, 11-year-old Hayden. While Rachelle played the disgruntled foil to the over-achieving eco-cop Ed on their former television show, Living with Ed—which aired for three seasons, first on HGTV and then on Planet Green—her problems with their modest 1936 home in Studio City, California, are those to which most homeowners can relate. For example, cramped rooms make entertaining difficult. The home’s 1,600 square feet of main living space (plus an additional 600-square-foot room above the garage) does not easily accommodate the fundraisers the Begleys regularly host; not to mention the camera crews that routinely invaded

16

the family’s day-to-day lives to capture the couple’s good-natured squabbles over everything from composting to conserving water and energy. For seven years, the family even ran a nontoxic cleaning business—Begley’s Best—out of their garage, adding to the mêlée. “Even if it were designed differently, it would be better,” Rachelle explains. “It’s just that it’s a 1936 house. Yes, it’s efficient, but it would be great to be able to incorporate everything that’s going on now in eco building and be a recipient of all the latest benefits—why not?” So, the Begleys are moving. After years of documenting how to retrofit an older house to maximize use of solar energy for electricity, heating, cooling and hot water, family recycling and rainwater catchment, they are planning to sell their modest abode and build a modern, 3,000-square-foot home a mile away. Ed emphasizes that the move is a major concession on his part. “I made it crystal clear when Rachelle and I were dating: ‘This is the home I plan to be buried in. I will never move.’ And I said it repeatedly from 1993 until about a year and a half ago; now I’m going against that.” Although the Begleys are trading up, they will continue to set an ex-

ample by building their new home to green building standards that few homeowners have achieved. They’re going for the platinum; that is, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum standards, the highest rating possible for buildings certified by the U.S. Green Building Council (usgbc.org). This premier LEED designation requires an incredible environmental commitment in every aspect of the building process, from responsible site development, reduced water use and renewable energy utilities to the use of recycled and local materials and indoor air quality control. Of the more than 130 LEED Platinum building projects in California—the state that boasts the most such projects—only about 30 are private homes. Despite his initial protestations, Ed admits that he’s excited about the prospect. If there’s one thing he relishes, it’s a green challenge.

Life with Ed It’s not easy to live up to Ed’s 30-yearstrong waste-nothing ethos. Although he first made a name for himself as an actor, initially as Dr. Victor Ehrlich on the 1980s TV show St. Elsewhere, followed by his recurring roles in the hit TV series Six Feet Under and Arrested

Development, as well as a co-starring role in Woody Allen’s 2009 film Whatever Works, lately he’s become best known as Hollywood’s green guru. He’s the people’s go-to expert on green building and saving energy, authoring the how-to books, Living Like Ed and Ed Begley, Jr.’s Guide to Sustainable Living. Ed is often spotted around Hollywood riding his bike, his preferred mode of travel; on weekdays, he and his daughter ride together to her school, pedaling two miles each way. This down-to-earth, affable man is perhaps eco-conscious to a fault. The success of the show Living with Ed relied in great part on the watchdog antics of Ed catching his wife stuffing vegetable peelings down the garbage disposal, instead of in the compost bin, timing her long showers or opening a running dryer to discover Rachelle’s lone tank top inside. In each case, the chastised Rachelle vowed to be more eco-conscious, with a raised eyebrow aimed at the camera. “I felt vindicated,” Rachelle says of her reality show adventures. “They [the viewers] were going to side with me.”

If there’s any question that Ed’s needling occurs only when the cameras are on, his family members put those doubts to rest. Rachelle describes how her husband insists on keeping the temperature uncomfortably low on cold nights for the sake of saving energy; of turning off her curling iron while it’s warming up if she leaves the room; or switching off the TV if she’s listening to it while getting dressed down the hall. Daughter Hayden’s biggest gripe has to do with TV time. “I love to watch TV for hours on end,” she says. “My dad is very cautious about using power and we have to turn off several different things when we use the TV, like the DVR and its power switch.” But Ed insists that all these little energy-saving strategies add up. While he was willing to recently trade his obsolete 1992 TV set for an HDTV, he knows it’s a major energy hog—and not only when someone’s watching it. “The phantom power can be as high as 100 watts per hour,” he says—that’s the power the TV consumes simply by being plugged in. “But,” he notes, “ if

We do the Work so you can Live Better.

you have put power strips everywhere in the house and you just walk around and click off a few of them, all of that phantom power is turned off. Then, you can enjoy an appliance like that without using a tremendous amount of energy.” The sun may be an unlimited source of energy, but the solar power stored in their home’s batteries has limitations— and Ed is a vigilant watchdog. With rooftop solar panels providing most of the home’s power, the Begleys remain blissfully unaware when there’s a power outage in the neighborhood. “I only find out about it when I walk to the post office and see the signal flashing to show that power has been restored,” Ed comments. Ed manually switches over to the municipal power grid only when he senses that the stored power capacity in the home’s solar batteries is running low. He foresees that eventually that system will be automated, but for now, he’s happy to keep track. The solar power generated onsite is enough to operate the house and professional TV cameras; it also charges an electric car in the ga-

rage—an all-electric 2002 Toyota RAV4 that’s clocked 85,000 miles. For hot water, the family comfortably relies mostly on a simple solar thermal setup—a 4-by-10-foot panel on the roof of black anodized tubing behind a piece of glass. A pump activates when a sensor in the panel senses that it’s hotter than the temperature in the tank. Ed observes: “If you keep things simple, they work well.” Simplicity also keeps maintenance issues at bay. The upkeep required for his solar electric system is minor; he’s committed only to adding water to the batteries every nine months and occasionally getting up to the roof to clean the panels with a brush and a little water.

Embracing the Great Outdoors One of Ed’s first acts when he purchased his current house in 1988 was to rip up the existing lawn and replace it with native California plants and a fruit and vegetable garden. Unless raising cows or running a golf course, he can’t imagine why anyone would need high-maintenance, water-wasting grass outside their home. But, as with many of Ed’s improvements, energy saving tends to trump aesthetics. That’s where Rachelle comes in. “A few years after Rachelle had moved in here, she was telling a friend to meet her at the house,” Ed recalls, “and she said ‘It’s the one on the corner that looks like the Addams Family yard.’ I thought: ‘Oooh, maybe that garden isn’t quite as nice-looking as it used to be.’ It was very drought-tolerant, but it didn’t look good.” With Rachelle’s help, a new landscaper joined the effort of turning the formerly bleak-looking yard into an attractive mix of native plants that includes fragrant rosemary and purpleflowering sage along with broccoli, artichoke, corn and lettuce. Plans for the new family home will allow Ed an expanded capability to harvest rainwater through a large catchment system with an underground tank, so that he can irrigate the gardens without drawing from the municipal water supply—

18

which he characterizes as having, “… our straw dipped into someone else’s drink”—namely, Northern California’s water. “If you’re going to take water from someone else,” Ed advises, “the least you can do is to use it responsibly and not waste it on non-native species.”

Meeting in the Middle Bringing Rachelle’s aesthetic influence to bear has entailed replacing outdated living room curtains with attractive and energy-efficient wooden shutters, and finding ways to recycle without having large bins in plain sight. She’s orchestrating the design and layout of the new house—allowing for both entertaining space and larger closets—while Ed focuses on its renewable energy systems—including more unshaded rooftop panels and orienting the building to make the most of natural light. “If we don’t go LEED Platinum, then who will?” Rachelle queries. “That alone is not easy; still, I want to make it look like other houses in the neighborhood. I don’t want a Jetsons’ house; super modern has never been my style. I‘d like to show people that you can have it all, and I’m praying that it’s true.” The Begleys got off to a good start in March by tearing down an existing home on the property they recently purchased—96 percent of which, from cabinets to pipes, will be recycled or reused through Habitat for Humanity. By March 2012, the new house should be finished. They want their LEED Platinum home to serve as a model for people who are building new residences, to show what is possible in achieving real energy efficiency and waste reduction without sacrificing style or comfort. Ed’s aim is to ensure the place produces more energy than it uses. As before, the whole process will be documented. “I hope that I’ve shown what you can do with a retrofit,” Ed says. “Now I want to show people what you can do from the ground up in 2011 and beyond.”

WEB ALERT!

The family’s ongoing focus on green living has made a major impact on Hayden, who accepts environmental consciousness as the norm. “I learned everything from my dad, from composting to solar panels,” Hayden says. “I always teach my friends to turn off the lights more often, take shorter showers, stuff like that.” Her green awareness gives this tween maturity beyond her years. As Rachelle says, “She thinks about things outside of herself. She’s always been conscientious. She’s also really concerned about the planet and very compassionate.” Hayden is proof that a family’s day-to-day environmental commitments can leave a lasting impact that reaches far beyond the immediate family. Brita Belli is the editor of E-The Environmental Magazine and the author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Renewable Energy for Your Home. Her next book, due out this fall, explores the relationship of environmental toxins and autism.

Here are five ways to bond and get healthy with your favorite four-legged friend. Walking An obvious way to exercise with a canine pal is to take walks together. Fetching Many dogs love chasing tennis balls, tree limbs or other thrown objects. To get the most out of a workout, after throwing the object to be fetched, take off after it with your dog. Although the four-legged competitor may win most of the time, running back and forth and friendly competition benefits all.

Swimming It may be difficult to find a salt pool (avoid chlorine) where pooches are welcome, but shallow lakeshores, local streams and other natural bodies of water can provide enjoyable destinations to take a supervised dip. Swimming builds strength and stamina and is gentle on the joints; it works the body in ways that no other exercise does. Dancing Dancing is another way to get a groove on and burn calories at the same time. Turn on some tunes and start moving, encouraging your dog to move with you, perhaps even standing on his or her back paws if it feels right. The laughter that results is a whole other form of exercise. Bicycling Years ago, bicycling with man’s best friend was dangerous. Fortunately, today we have contraptions that attach a dog safely to a bicycle for a ride and prevent falls when Fido lunges after a squirrel. Bicycling with a dog running alongside is an effective workout for both of you. Exercising with canine pals can be rewarding in many ways, but workouts must be safe, as well as effective. Unless exercising at home or in a fenced yard, dogs should remain on a leash at all times and wear identification tags. Understanding the limits and abilities of a dog’s breed is also important, so that workouts can be appropriately tailored. Now, grab Fido and get moving!
