letterfrompublisher Welcome to our first annual special-edition Natural Wellness Guide. Keep it handy all year to reference our Health & Wellness Glossary (page 29) or to find a local practitioner or resource for better living. Natural wellness is more important than ever, especially given the rising cost of traditional health care in this country—and the fact that not all insurance packages reliably protect us from those costs. I found out the hard way. Earlier this summer, I developed an infection in my tear duct. A doctor friend urged me to get antibiotics immediately, or I could end up needing eye surgery in a matter of days! Already knowing that I had dacrocystitis, that I needed a systemic antibiotic, I located the closest urgent care. I saw a physician’s assistant for about five minutes, needed no tests, got the necessary prescription, paid my $35 co-pay, and left after less than an hour there. And the cost of my bill? $620.40. Good thing it wasn’t a serious health issue. Which is why preventive care is what’s urgent. Boulder County is rich with resources to help us live a healthier, more balanced life—including all the skilled health and wellness providers listed in our Natural Wellness Guide. I urge you to visit any one of them to enhance not only your physical health, but your emotional, mental and spiritual health, too. Be well,

newsbriefs Boulder Green Streets Transforms East Pearl for Cyclists, Runners and Walkers

O

n Sunday, September 19, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Boulder Green Streets will transform ten more blocks of Pearl Street into a car-free, bike, run, skate, and stroll zone. This “street liberation project is part of a worldwide movement in which downtown city streets are converted into community play spaces, modeled after the 70-mile-long Ciclovia, held every Sunday in Bogota, Columbia. Boulder Green Streets will feature interactive street-side activities—sample yoga classes, dancing, hands-on learning, displays—as well as food, music, races, and a children’s bicycle parade. “Turning our city streets green, even for just one day, celebrates Boulder’s active lifestyle and commitment to sustainability, while offering us a new way to build community, says event organizer Hillary Griffith. “It also challenges the assumption that major streets exist only for cars. That’s a powerful stance.

Experience the Energy of Qi Gong

E

very Wednesday at 7:00 PM, come learn the practice of Jingui Golden Shield Qi Gong, a traditional energy-cultivation system developed to heighten human potential and significantly increase health and longevity. Student practitioners learn a sequence of steps, each a technique that activates the enormous potential energy (qi) stored in the body and converts it to actual energy. This energy feeds and strengthens our internal organs, and the excess spills into our meridians (internal wiring system), clearing any stagnations or blocks. Jingui Golden Shield fully integrates the body, mind, and energy through the careful application of this physical practice, meditation, and herbs. Wednesday night trainings are held at Crossroads Gardens, 1800 30th St., Suite 201, Boulder. For more information, visit Jingui.com or call David Moore at 303-917-3318.

Sound Play

Birds, Like Humans, Sing Just Because They Can Animal researchers like Gisela Kaplan, Ph.D., and Irene Pepperberg, Ph.D., have determined that birds not only sing to communicate daily needs, many engage in sound play, most often when they’re alone, but sometimes also when humans are present. Some species continually improvise their singing with new elements, phrases and sequences, reports Kaplan, a professor at the Research Centre for Neuroscience and Animal Behaviour at the University of New England, Australia. Nightingales and canaries are among the avian virtuosos, reinventing their repertoire in each successive season, while the brown thrasher may hold the record at close to 2,000 song types. Nightingales, she notes, organize their compositions according to rules of construction similar to the way humans use syntax. These birds even create distinctive phrases that identify them as individuals. Kaplan’s own recordings of Australian magpies reveal how the bird’s voice moves across four octaves, varies its phrasing between staccato and legato, and embellishes sequences with vibrato, trills or deep overtones. More, it will close a completed song with a signature phrase, in much the same way that a painter initials a finished canvas.

Mental Videos

Daydreams Have Everyday Benefits Scientific interest in daydreaming was kicked off a decade ago, when Marcus Raichle, a neurologist and professor with Washington University in St. Louis, discovered that several parts of the brain become unusually active metabolically when the brain is thought to be idling. His findings further showed that daydreaming is the mind’s default mode... and that’s not a bad thing. Today, researchers know that daydream content pretty much maps onto people’s everyday goals, aspirations and apprehensions, rather than being exotic meanderings. For the average person, daydreaming typically represents a kind of mental rehearsal, maintaining the brain in a state of readiness to respond. As pioneering psychologist Jerome Singer pointed out, “You can engage in trial action without any consequences. Such fantasies may fulfill a psychic need. In Psychology Today, author Josie Glausiusz reports that daydreaming now seems to be considered an essential human activity. Daydreams help us generate our sense of self, hone social skills and serve as a font of creativity for those who pay attention to them, all of which make us feel vibrant, aware and engaged with life. www.NaturalAwakeningsBoulder.com

Airlines Fall Short of Facilitating EcoFriendly Skies

Gulf Update

According to the National Resources Defense Council, nearly 75 percent of in-flight generated waste is recyclable, but only 20 percent actually gets recycled. Green America’s consumer watchdog website, ResponsibleShopper.org, reports that airlines could recycle nearly 500 million more pounds of waste each year, half of it in-flight waste. Some airlines say they’re making progress, yet none collects and processes all the major recyclables of aluminum cans, glass, plastic and paper, or has a comprehensive program to minimize packaging and compost food waste, according to Green America’s recent review. “For concerned consumers looking to spend their travel dollars wisely, airline waste may be the ultimate example of, ‘What goes up must come down,’” comments lead researcher Victoria Kreha. Green America’s airline rankings for recycling, from best to worst, are: Delta, Virgin, Southwest, Continental, Jet Blue, American, British Airways, Air Tran, United and US Airways. Beyond the environmental benefits, recycling airline waste would create jobs nationwide; according to Colorado Recycles, recycling creates six times as many jobs as does landfilling. Take action at GreenAmericaToday.org/go/AirlineRecyclingReport; email executives at listed airlines and report how flight attendants answer when asked about company recycling policies. natural awakenings

Citizens Move to Ban Toxic Oil Dispersants as Options In response to British Petroleum’s use of toxic chemicals to disperse the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, American citizens are asking the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to immediately delist products of concern from the National Contingency Plan Product Schedule. This would include removing such dispersants as an approved method of dealing with an oil spill. Products of concern are defined as those that contain any substances known to be a human health hazard or that have not been proven to be nontoxic to wildlife species relevant to the area where they will be used. Flaxseed a Natural Alternative to Cholesterol Drugs

A

new study from Iowa State University’s Nutrition and Wellness Research Center may give men a way to combat high cholesterol without drugs—if they don’t mind sprinkling some flaxseed into their daily diet. In the study, researchers examined the effects of eating flaxseed lignans (natural plant chemicals found in flaxseed) on 90 people diagnosed with high cholesterol. The results showed that consuming at least 150 milligrams per day (about three tablespoons) decreased cholesterol in men by just under 10 percent over the three months of the study. They did not see similar results in women. Suzanne Hendrich, a professor of food science and human nutrition at the university who led the study, notes that the flaxseed tablets used in the research are not available in the United States, but sprinkling ground flaxseed on cereal and other foods can provide ample cholesterol-lowering flaxseed lignans. Ground flaxseed will oxidize over time, she says, possibly affecting its flavor as well as omega-3 content, so keep it fresh.

new study by Ben-Gurion University of the Negev reveals that hand-clapping songs boost the development of motor and cognitive skills in children ages 6 through 10. “We found that children in the first, second and third grades who sing these [kinds of] songs demonstrate skills absent in children who don’t take part in similar activities,” explains Dr. Idit Sulkin, of the university’s music science lab. “We also found that children who spontaneously perform hand-clapping songs in the yard during recess have neater handwriting, write better and make fewer spelling errors.” Sulkin engaged several elementary school classrooms in a program of either music appreciation or hand-clapping songs for 10 weeks. With the hand-clapping group, she found that “Within a very short period of time, the children who until then hadn’t taken part in such activities caught up in their cognitive abilities to those who did.” The children’s teachers believe that those who participate in such hand-clapping songs also exhibit better social integration.

When More Isn’t Better

In recent years, multiple studies have touted the benefits of following a diet rich in antioxidant vitamins such as C and E. Now, new findings show that while antioxidant-rich foods are fine when eaten in large quantities, taking too many antioxidants in supplement form can put our health at risk. Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute report that many people take way too many vitamins, believing that if a little is good, a lot must be better— but that is not the case. “If you are taking 10 or 100 times the amount in a daily multivitamin, you may be predisposing your cells to developing cancer,” warns institute Director Dr. Eduardo Marbán, who led the study.

The Human Heart Renews Itself

Researchers at Karolinska Institute, a leading medical university in Sweden, have demonstrated that contrary to conventional theory, heart cells are able to regenerate themselves. Examining the heart tissue of 50 people over the course of four years, the researchers found that new heart cells appeared to replace older ones at a rate of approximately 1 percent per year in people in their 20s, falling to 0.5 percent per year by age 75. Scientists now hope to find ways to stimulate this natural regeneration of heart cells as a way to avoid heart transplants and help people recover from heart attacks.

Grapes as Medicine

A diet rich in natural grapes—red, green and black—could slow a downhill progression from high blood pressure and insulin resistance to heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Scientists at the University of Michigan Health System believe that grapes’ naturally occurring antioxidants, known as phytochemicals, help reduce risk factors related to cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome, often a Type 2 diabetes precursor.

mong Stephen Simon’s many acclaimed films are the Academy Award-winning What Dreams May Come, Somewhere in Time, and the groundbreaking Conversations with God. He also co-founded The Spiritual Cinema Circle in 2004 with relationship experts Gay and Kathlyn Hendricks. As a subscription-based monthly DVD community, Spiritual Cinema Circle offers viewers a continuous array of upbeat and inspirational films that help us feel better about being human.

Why did you decide to produce spiritual films? I’ve always loved films like It’s a Wonderful Life, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, and 2001: A Space Odyssey, that have a spiritual content to them, even though Hollywood refers to them as fantasy films. My dad was a big comedy director in the 1930s and 40s, and I always knew spiritual movies were the kinds of films I wanted to make. When I was about 30 years old, I read this extraordinary book called Bid Time Return, by Richard Matheson, which I went on to produce as my first film, called Somewhere in Time. What Dreams May Come was also based on a Matheson novel. Later, when I read the Conversations with God books by Neale Donald Walsch and we became good friends, I just knew the story of his life would lend itself to film. www.NaturalAwakeningsBoulder.com

What is the difference between a spiritual and a religious film? Mainstream media uses the words spiritual and religious as synonymous terms, but they are not. A religious film would be like The Passion of the Christ or The Ten Commandments, whereas a spiritual film would be like Whale Rider or What Dreams May Come. I believe spirituality is a personal and private experience, where you have your own relationship with whatever you might call the Divine. You might call this God, but you also might call this spirit, life, the universe or nature. You can be a spiritual person but not be religious, yet I firmly believe that spiritual and religious people have much more in common than they differ.

Has mainstream America been receptive to this spiritual movement? I don’t believe in the word mainstream. To me, it means that entertainment has lost all of its individuality. When you try to attract everybody, you have to be concerned with not offending anybody, and that is not what art and filmmaking is about. Spiritual filmmaking is definitely a niche. 100 countries around the world and the primary demographic of our audience tends to be more adult. What we offer strongly appeals to individuals who are looking for this kind of transformative entertainment that both enlightens and allows them to feel better about themselves and the world.

Truth. Clarity. Peace.

Which filmmakers are producing films that are right for your audience? A filmmaker produces a spiritual movie because it’s in his heart and it comes from his soul. We have a number of filmmakers we’ve nurtured whom I think are wonderful. For example, we’ve distributed five films from Santa Fe-based Scott Cervine and four films from Geno Andrews, headquartered in Los Angeles.

What are your overriding goals and hopes for Spiritual Cinema Circle? When Spiritual Cinema Circle films help our community of viewers feel better about being human, that makes me happy. There is enough media that look at the dark, ugly, negative, violent, greedy sides of humanity, and there is no question that these dark elements seem to be part of human nature. But there’s little light shown on the beautiful side of our nature—the side that consciously evolves, forgives and loves. Spiritual films allow us to look at our humanity when we operate at our best. This is what we look for when qualifying films for the Spiritual Cinema Circle. The films we choose are dramatic and the characters experience difficult challenges, but at the end of the day, there is always transcendence, a powerful transformation and a pathway through whatever the darkness may be. Our hope is that viewers are pleased with our movies and feel better at the end of the film than they did at the start. Ellen Mahoney teaches writing at the University of Colorado, Boulder. TITANS OF YOGA LESSONS DISTILLED FROM A LIFETIME OF DISCIPLINED PRACTICE by Johannes R. Fisslinger

enlightenment from contemporary practitioners who are deemed by their peers as world titans of yoga.

Focus on the Breath

T

he essence of yoga, no matter its style, is a journey of self-discovery and transformation. It becomes a way of life that embraces a system of physical science, while honoring the quest for mental and emotional stability and balance. Millions of U.S. practitioners of all ages enjoy the benefits of increased flexibility and muscle strength, better posture and alignment, and decreased stress. As their practice deepens, they also experience yoga’s larger gift: a body/mind attunement that nurtures mental clarity, emotional composure and a greater sense of overall well-being. The titans interviewed incorporate various techniques and approaches. Yet, they all agree upon the following handful of principles, designed to inspire, facilitate and heighten anyone’s yoga practice.

Be Present in the Moment Yoga… is about the power of now, being present in the moment. Anytime, [you can] take a few deep breaths and find a peaceful space within. ~ Beth Shaw, founder of YogaFit 14

If you bring your attention to your breathing, you become present; develop this muscle of being present by focusing on the breath. ~ Bryan Kest, creator of Power Yoga Try this transformative exercise: If your mind becomes restless, relax your jaw and breathing, then become aware of the quality of your breath, using a soft inhale and exhale. Feel your belly move as breath enters and exits through the nostrils, like a guest. Choose to observe your breath and it will redirect the mind. ~ Lisa Walford, developer of YogaWorks teacher training program

Experience Health and Oneness with the Body Regular practice is key. Inevitably, if you do the postures enough, there’s magic to them. Even if you [begin with] no intention, yoga leads you to a state of union. Practicing yoga helps you remember that you’re already perfect, already free. ~ Sara Ivanhoe, creator of bestselling yoga DVDs

If you don’t feel good in your body—if you can’t move forward with ease and not dis-ease—how can you feel good about anything? Yoga… makes us feel good about the bodies we are in. ~ Beth Shaw Yoga strengthens our life force and makes us stronger from deep inside; it builds life energy, prana, chi. ~ Vinnie Marino, Vinyasa flow teacher who employs music styles ranging from trance to rock

SEANE CORN FINDING A YOGA STYLE AND MAKING IT MEANINGFUL by Kim Childs

Strengthen the Mind through Meditation The real power of yoga is in meditation, the qualities of the mind behind the action. Bring these meditative qualities into the physical practice, and it becomes meditation in motion. ~ Bryan Kest Learn to concentrate on your mantra, your sacred words that you recite over and over again. My favorite is, “Let go… just let it go…” ~ David Life, co-creator of Jiva Mukti yoga Practice pranayama [regulation of the breath] and meditation to improve concentration and the power of your mind. The mind creates emotions and thoughts; when the mind is healthy, the body and mind connect. Then you really find your soul essence, your consciousness. ~ Rajashree Choudhury, teacher of Bikram yoga

Experience Oneness with the Spirit For energy to be flowing, you have to be in tune and in balance not only with the nature around you, but [with] something that’s deeper inside you. This energy that’s in you, in me, in plants and animals, is the pure energy, the one life that connects us all. Who you are is an expression of consciousness, an expression of God. ~ Kim Eng, Qi Flow yoga teacher and partner of author Eckhart Tolle Yoga helps you [let go of] attachment to material things and empowers your soul. ~ Rajahshree Choudhury

Seane Corn, a yoga superstar featured on magazine covers and Oprah.com, has been practicing yoga for 23 years and teaching for well over a decade. She has also taken her yoga “off the mat,” inspiring activism and raising funds for programs around the world that serve at-risk youth and AIDS/HIV treatment and prevention. Natural Awakenings asked this renowned teacher to share her advice on choosing a style of yoga and creating a home practice.

C

orn observes that personality may initially predispose a student to prefer one style of yoga over another. “For example, the style of yoga I teach is Vinyasa, a fluid form of yoga,” she says. “It tends to draw people who are more athletic and perhaps more goal-oriented or self-competitive— those who prefer a practice that feels more like a workout.”

The essence of yoga is truth and love… willingness to embrace the God that is within, recognizing that we are all connected. ~ Seane Corn, internationally celebrated yoga teacher Johannes R. Fisslinger is the co-founder of National Yoga Month and founder of Yoga-Recess in Schools. Both initiatives are coordinated by the Yoga Health Foundation. This style of so-called flow yoga can also be very emotionally therapeutic, she adds. Students who want to try more vigorous yoga styles like Vinyasa or Ashtanga should have a basic understanding of how to build yoga asanas (postures), integrate the breath and work with their body’s flexibility. “In my dream world, students would know that there are techniques they need to understand before they approach a more challenging or fluid practice, says Corn. “That would mean either going to a very beginner-level class or an Iyengar class. For some students, that may feel too slow, but it’s providing the appropriate information that’s going to give them longevity in their practice. Likewise, she recommends Iyengar if an individual is recovering from an injury. Without proper technique, students can compromise their knees, lower backs and necks, Corn counsels. She explains that while Iyengar is quite a methodical and precise style for teaching fundamentals, styles like Kripalu, characterized as “meditation in motion, can be more forgiving. Once people begin to practice, physical and life changes may lead to the exploration of other styles. This is true for Corn, who has studied many traditions over the years. “When I was younger, I wouldn’t have considered an Iyengar or a Kripalu class, she recalls. “It was only Ashtanga or Vinyasa. Now that I’m in my 40s—or even back in my 30s—I’ve wanted a deeper practice that has more space and more areas of stillness and connection, which seems to match my growth as a person. For those who are grounded in yoga fundamentals and want a home practice, Corn recommends setting

www.NaturalAwakeningsBoulder.com

aside 30 minutes to an hour at least three days a week. “If you have a half-hour, I would recommend 10 minutes of sun salutes, 10 minutes of standing poses and 10 minutes of backbends, forward bends and a resting pose. Turn off phones and other distractions, she advises, and focus. The more sacred, intentional and meaningful a home practice is, the more likely one is to regard it as more than an exercise routine. “I set up an altar with things that are important to me, remarks Corn. “When I put my palms together, I’ll set an intention and ask Spirit that the practice be a reflection of my devotion, a dedication to something greater than myself. At 43, Corn credits her yoga practice and diet (avoiding meat, fish, dairy, sugar, alcohol, caffeine and chemical additives) with maintaining her good health. “My bones are strong, my muscles and joints are quite supple, and my hormonal system is in really good shape, she reports. “I don’t have PMS or other [premenopausal] symptoms and my skin looks good and clear. More importantly, I’m just very comfortable in my body and confident on my feet. As with any physical undertaking, anyone with a pre-existing injury or medical condition should consult a doctor before beginning a yoga practice. Corn advises students to, “Find a teacher who can meet you where you are. Once on the mat, she says, explore what feels right and allow your practice to evolve as you do. 5 Quick Tips for

1

Parenting Teens Listen more than you talk.

More often than not, teens just want to vent. Allow them this time and space, and don’t go into fix-it mode. Just listen and reflect back what you hear them saying and how it affects you as an observer who cares. Being heard and understood is more important than getting everything right; make that the focus of your relationship and the loudest message you send. Provide structure. A parent’s structure becomes the foundation for an adolescent’s habits. The better they know when and where they regularly need to be, the more opportunities they have to practice punctuality and responsibility. Dinner, curfew, quiet time for homework all at the same time every day—this minimal structure can help during an otherwise chaotic time in their life. In our crazy world, let your home be a sanctuary for your kids and yourself.

2

3

Provide boundaries and consequences. Boundaries are designed to

help, not punish, children. Solid direction in how to live and stay on course is key to creating safety for a kid—one of a parent’s most important tasks. No matter how mature or insistent, teens can’t figure it all out on their own. You’re training them to go into outer space—their own space outside the family—when they legally become an adult at 18. Help them to be prepared, confident, informed. Be open for dialogue. It’s hard for anyone to ask for help or to admit

4

they don’t know something. Be open and available so that your child can easily approach you with their problems and questions. Converse in a way that makes it safe for your teen to ask more questions; one-way talks and lectures will shut them down or may make them feel embarrassed for not knowing. If your conversations are a pleasurable experience, your teen will keep seeking you out for advice. If you’re not there to answer the difficult questions about, say, sex and drugs, there’s bound to be someone at school who will.

5

Be their best role model.

Adapting Gandhi’s “Be the change you want to see in the world, be the adult you want your child to grow up to be. Be a clear good example to follow. Be authentic, tell the truth, admit when you’ve made a mistake, share your passions and feelings, and lead with your heart. Our own parents’ dysfunctionality is not an excuse for poor parenting. Rise to the challenge, put in the effort, and show up. Parents often get stuck in the role of friend or disciplinarian. Your kid needs both your mature objectivity and your attention that lets them know they’re special. SAVORING THE SUN Three Ways to Preserve Summer’s Goodness by Judith Fertig

“B

eing a locavore is fabulous if you live somewhere like California,” says Audra Wolfe, a co-founder of Canvolution and an expert food preservationist. “But if you live in the Northeast, unless you learn food preservation, you could be eating local turnips and kale all winter,” she notes with a chuckle. The mounting desire to eat locally grown food, know what’s in our food and reduce our carbon footprint, as well as shrinking household budgets, are contributing to what The New York Times recently cited as a renaissance in home food preservation. “In a time of high food prices, job losses and food safety scares, home canning is booming,” agrees June Taylor, a Berkeley, California, food preservationist. According to Jarden Home Brands, makers of Kerr and Ball brands of glass canning jars, sales of canning equipment were up 30 percent in 2009. The simplest methods for “putting by” food are freezing, refrigerator canning or multi-step water bath canning. Pressure canning, dehydrating and fermenting require special equipment (pressure cookers, dehydrators and large crocks), as well as more advanced knowledge. For most of us, a large pot and some pint-size glass canning jars with lids and metal sealing rings comprise the basic equipment we need to get started.

“The jars are like characters, with story lines that I remember.”

Refrigerator Canning

~ Eugenia Bone, author of Well-Preserved: Recipes and Techniques for Putting Up Small Batches of Seasonal Foods

Freezing Freezing can be as easy as rinsing berries in very cold water, patting them dry, and then placing them on a baking sheet in the freezer until frozen solid. Such quick-frozen berries can then be placed in freezer storage containers and will keep for up to six months. Some foods, like vegetables, need to be blanched first—plunged into boiling water for a minute or two, then shocked in an ice water bath— then allowed to cool before being placed in freezer storage containers. Cooked sauces, salsas and chutneys can simply cool before being frozen and will also taste best when eaten within six months.

www.NaturalAwakeningsBoulder.com

Because most vegetables have low acid content, which can invite bacteria growth, canning them also involves pickling—adding a vinegary brine to increase the acid level. Refrigerator-pickled cucumbers, Swiss chard stems, green tomatoes, beets and green beans will keep for up to six months if kept covered in pickling brine in the refrigerator.

Hot Water Bath Canning Traditional hot water bath canning creates a vacuum within the jar that works to preserve foods. Basically, the food is packed into clean, hot jars that are filled almost up to the top (the amount of headspace between the food and the lid is indicated in the recipe). Then, the filled and sealed jars are processed in a

hot water bath for a specified amount of time. When they’re removed from the bath, the lids will pop into place as they cool to complete each jar’s vacuum seal. Food canned this way can be stored on kitchen shelves for up to one year, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines. Today, with more cooks, gardeners and food lovers collectively committed to the revival of the lost art of putting by food, the movement is picking up steam. Canvolution aficionados say that almost half of U.S. canners are now younger than 40. Sustainable Investing by Krista Strohoffer

Do You Know Where Your Money Is?

A

s consumers, we vote with our dollars every day. What we demand drives what businesses supply. By supporting local, natural, organic, alternative and green businesses, we send the message that health, wellness and sustainability matter. What about our investments? Are we championing local and organic food while investing in GMOs? Are we supporting peace and justice while investing in the military industrial complex? Are we supporting conservation and renewable energy while investing in the worst culprits within the oil and gas industries? Many of us are unknowingly doing these very things. The good news is—we don’t have to. Our investments don’t have to trample our values while we sleep at night! With Sustainable Investing, our investment decisions can be as thoughtful and directed as our purchasing decisions.

What is Sustainable Investing?

You Can Make Money & Make a Difference

While past performance doesn’t guarantee future returns, the KLD400—a recognized performance benchmark for sustainable investment portfolios—has shown that sustainable investment portfolios can match and even outperform traditional investment strategies. In 2009, the KLD400 was up 31.73%, while the S&P 500 was up only 26.46%—an outperformance of almost 20%. According to the Social Investment Forum, 65% of sustainable funds outperformed their benchmarks in 2009. And over the 20-year period since the KLD400’s inception, from May 1, 1990, through March 31, 2010, annualized returns were a positive 9.65% compared with those of the S&P 500, at 8.83%—an outperformance of over 9%.

How to Start?

A little bit can go a long way. Rather than save up to invest later, start investing now—doable with as little as $25 to $100 a month or a lump-sum investment of $250.

What are Your options?

The universe of sustainable investment options is constantly expanding. In 1995, when the Social Investment Forum published its first Trends Report, they identified 55 sustainable mutual funds; as of 2007, 260 funds and counting. Socially Responsible Investing is not only a viable investment strategy but a powerful force for change. Empower your investments. Your money makes a difference!

Socially Responsible Investing developed because investors wanted to avoid harmful industries, primarily the military industrial complex. “Bamboozled by

Bamboo Flooring

By Sherrie Glogosh

A

sk any two homeowners with bamboo flooring how they like it—one will love it; the other will complain that it dents and scratches easily. Why this controversy? Because all bamboo flooring is not created equal! How do you choose to best protect yourself—and the environment? First, know your bamboo species. The best bamboo for flooring comes from the Moso species and is at least five years old. Don’t settle for anything else from your supplier. Cheaper bamboo is typically harvested too early and is of low quality, and the adhesives used to connect the flooring strips may contain formaldehyde—one of the most volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and off-gasses. Second, know your bamboo hardness scale (JankaHardnessScale.com). Bamboo produced the traditional way (vertical or horizontal, natural or carbonized) may have a hardness scale of red oak, one of the softer trade woods. The most durable bamboo flooring? Strand-woven, made from bamboo strips and scraps, then mixed with a resin (make sure it’s a “green resin product). This flooring is up to 154% stronger than red oak and 126% stronger than North American maple—nearly rivaling hard woods like Brazilian walnut and Ipe on the Janka scale. It can stand up to the rigors associated with commercial environments as well. Last, know your bamboo source. Most of the bamboo used for flooring comes all the way from China and Vietnam, the two largest bamboo-plantation regions. That’s a pretty big carbon footprint! Some plantations engage in fair-trade practices; others do not. How will you know this factor when the source is halfway around the globe? Find a supplier you can trust. Bottom line: Do your homework and choose wisely. If you do, you will love that floor for years! Sherrie Glogosh is a green interior designer and owner of Renewable Interiors. Smacking Good Snacks NATURALLY HEALTHY CHOICES KIDS CRAVE by Judith Fertig

A

dults may think in terms of three meals a day, but kids are natural grazers, enjoying small portions of lots of different foods throughout the day. So it makes sense for parents to expand the notion of snack time and to have healthy foods ready when hunger strikes at a moment’s notice. If kids can understand that a snack simply means a smaller portion of a good-for-us food instead of a processed item with empty calories, the rest is easy. More, when kids can help prepare the snack and are more invested in the process, they’re also more likely to eat it, advises Marina Ganter, a former researcher with Bon Appétit and Gourmet and the mother of daughters Zoe and Charlotte, ages 9 and 7. The following ideas for premade, easy-to prepare snacks will curb hunger and deliciously nourish children.

It’s easy to keep several options on hand and form good eating habits early. Naturally Sweet ~ “One way for your kids to enjoy healthy snacks is to get them started on naturally sweet foods,” says Christine Steendahl, of KidApprovedMeals.com and DineWithoutWhine.com, which sell menus and shopping lists to parents looking for guidance in meal preparation. “Since most kids crave sweets… naturally sweet foods such as fruits are perfect.” Real bananas, oranges, apples, cherries, strawberries and other fruits are popular with most kids. She suggests, “You can mix in yogurt or even make a fruit smoothie with some milk and a drop of chocolate or other natural flavors.” Or cut a firm, ripe banana (a good source of potassium) in half horizontally and insert a frozen treat stick in the cut end. Then, roll or brush the banana in antioxidant-rich, melted chocolate chips. Kids like these fresh or frozen; if frozen, let the chocolate-coated bananas cool, then wrap and freeze them for up to a month. Frozen Yogurt ~ Jessica Seinfeld, author of Deceptively Delicious (DeceptivelyDelicious.com), is the mother of Sascha, 9, Julian, 7, and Shepherd, 4, and the wife of comedian Jerry Seinfeld. She makes frozen yogurt “lollies” (frozen lollipops) by puréeing a 16-ounce carton of plain yogurt with two or more cups of fresh or frozen berries in a blender or food processor. She then pours the mixture into frozen treat molds. “Your kids think they’re just getting a treat,” she smiles, “but these lollies are a great low-calorie, low-fat alternative to high-fat ice cream.”

22

Boulder & Broomfield Counties

www.NaturalAwakeningsBoulder.com

Little Plates ~ Ganter celebrates her family’s French/Greek heritage with mezedes, or “meze”—little plates of lots of things—which her daughters adore. “These vary constantly at our house,” she notes, “depending on what’s fresh at the market and what’s in my fridge. The great thing about small plates is that children are free to take as much or as little as they want and can sample several things at once.” The variety might include hummus, cucumbers, roasted red peppers, feta cheese, pita bread, Kalamata olives and steamed spinach, flavored with garlic and olive oil. From the Garden ~ When children pick their own foods from a garden, they are more likely to eat the resulting dish, especially fresh vegetables. Tatjana Alvegard, a photographer

and blogger, has discovered that her daughters, Nikita, 8, and Kaya, 3, know that a snack is as close as their own backyard. They love helping Mom make an easy basil pesto to herb just-picked tomatoes, sandwiches, pasta and garden-fresh veggie dips. Nuts and Dry Cereals ~ “One thing to recognize about children is that if they try enough types of natural and healthy snacks, they will find one that they enjoy,” remarks Steendahl. “The problem is that many times, parents give up trying to find the snacks that their kids like and settle for popular junk foods instead.” She stresses the importance of teaching kids which snacks to eat and which to avoid early in life, so that they can sidestep obesity problems as they grow. Nuts and dry cereals, for exam-

ying Qualif

ple, are choice alternatives to chips and other junk foods. According to California-based pediatrician and author William Sears, who markets his own line of healthy kids snacks called Lunchbox Essentials (DrSearsHealthyKids.com), parents should read labels to tell which manufactured products contain hydrogenated oils, artificial colors, preservatives and high-fructose corn syrup—all of which are best avoided. Rather, give family members snacks that provide both fiber and protein, which create a feeling of fullness and taste good, as well. Everyone Benefits

CREATIVE

EXPRESSION

Instrument of Healing by Mary Beth Maziarz

We all feel drawn by enticing creative projects we’d like to try. Now we know why…

M

ounting scientific evidence makes it clear that personal creative expression, once perceived as a luxury, sideline or hobby in our busy lives, is in fact a keystone of our most healthy and worthwhile activities. In infinitely varied and pleasurable forms, creative practices can move us beyond artful living to also serve as a vehicle for healing. When we appreciate others’ creativity, or better yet, actively bring creativity to bear in our own experiences, such participation shapes our sense of self and can render physical and emotional benefits. Studies published in Time and MuSICA (Music and Science Information Computer Archive), for example, have shown that music is a powerful ally. Listening and playing music not only helps us manage our moods and emotions, it also works to reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol, repair and regenerate brain neurons, calm anxiety and regulate heart rate.

Kids clearly benefit from the time they spend on creative pursuits. Beyond being great fun, arts education and creative activities help kids develop confidence and discipline, build mental acuity, increase problem-solving skills and shape more powerful futures. A study done by the University of California-Irvine, for example, proved that an important link exists between exposure to music and human intelligence, stating that, “Music trains the brain for higher forms of thinking.” A concurring report by the American Music Conference concluded that kids who play a musical instrument are 52 percent more likely to go on to college. Today, children who study the arts continue to outperform non-arts students on Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT) by an average of 59 points in verbal skills and 44 points in math skills, according to a College Board study compiled in 2001 by the Music Educators National Conference. As well as helping the young to mature, creative outlets help the mature stay young. “A lot of our brain is devoted to movement,” notes Kelly G. Lambert, a professor who chairs the psychology department at Randolph-Macon College, in Ashland, Virginia. “Thus, hobbies and activities that use our hands are engaging in more of our brain’s real estate.” Experts theorize that hands-on activities such as cooking, gardening, making jewelry, crocheting and sculpting may work to enhance mental clarity, because they activate additional parts of the brain. As we age, managing life’s challenges becomes especially important to overall health and well-being. A regular creative practice helps, according to Manhattan psychologist Dr. Joseph Cilona. “Creative activities can be highly beneficial in the management of stress,” he believes, “particularly the stressors associated with chronic life issues, such as coping with physical illness, a demanding job or troublesome relationships.” As a result, he says, “Individuals can experience a decrease in stress, anxiety and uncomfortable physical symptoms and improvement in symptoms of depression.”

Help for Families Art-based projects open a channel to express difficult feelings and insights. These can be especially helpful for individuals facing conflict or transition, for those recovering from substance abuse and for victims of abuse or trauma. Art therapy—a guided, clinical application of creative practices—is one of therapeutic medicine’s fastest growing fields. “Art therapy enables clients to express themselves non-verbally, allowing for subconscious wounds to be expressed via drawing, painting, making masks, creative writing and meditation,” observes Candice Christiansen, a licensed professional counselor

Mrs. Green Jeans PROGRESSIVE GARDENING TIPS

Herbs & Supplements for Dogs

THAT ARE WATER WISE & EARTH FRIENDLY What is progressive gardening? Just what the title indicates. It is a method of gardening that is very earth-friendly and saves enormous amounts of water. So, lets explore why you would want to be conscious of and possibly use some of these methods - especially in Christine Hubbard today’s environment of conservation and sustainability. General Manager 1. Hydroponic gardening uses about 1/10 of the water vs. conventional gardening methods. In a place like Colorado this is a very important factor. Hydroponic gardens allow you to re-circulate the water for up to 2 weeks! 2. Vertical gardening is the best way to save space. This method can be practiced whether you are growing in soil, hydroponically, or in containers. Grow up – not out. 3. When you are growing in soil grow organically. There are many products available that keep soil alive and that is important for our planet. And you know, your food will taste great and be the best for you and your family. 4. One of the best things about gardening hydroponically – things just grow faster. 5. Maximize your space and produce more food. Hydroponic methods can grow up to 10 times the food in the same amount of space as their conventional counterparts.

hen your pup seems to be feeling under the weather, you probably head straight for the veterinarian. But keeping furry family members happy and healthy doesn’t necessarily mean racking up large vet bills. Minor health problems can often be treated at home with herbal remedies. When it comes to using herbs, less is more, says Randy Kidd, DVM, author of Dr. Kidd’s Guide to Herbal Dog Care (Storey Books, 2000). “Read the product label, then adjust the dose down to the animal’s size, assuming that the dosage on the label is meant for a 150-pound human,â€? says Kidd. For liquid extracts given internally, the general recommendation is ½ teaspoon three times a day for dogs under 20 pounds, 1 teaspoon three times a day for dogs weighing between 20 and 40 pounds, and 1 tablespoon three times daily for dogs over 40 pounds.

aintaining our health seems to be on the minds of everyone today. And it’s no wonder, as the complexities of daily life consume our attention, that we are also discovering that our doctor often doesn’t have a magic pill that can heal our pain and illness. Additionally, the realization that our booming industrial, chemical and agricultural advancements have actually produced many negative effects on the overall health of our bodies and environment looms before us like a massive hurdle to overcome. The signs show up in our culture everywhere—from our

youth self-medicating with illegal drugs to our elderly faced with pharmaceutical bills that easily exceed a thousand dollars per month. Yet, Americans are responding. There is an ancient proverb that says, “When the student is ready, the master appears.” Research data claiming that vitamin and herbal supplements have become a $15 billion a year industry along with statistics that show 4 out of 10 Americans are using alternative and complementary healthcare is a strong indication that we are ready. We are ready to learn more. We are ready to take responsibility for our own health. We are reawakening to the knowledge that appropriate nutrition, invigorating physical fitness, and peaceful relaxation integrated with conventional medicine as practiced in the U.S. is sound advice. Listen to your body, feel the flow of your energy, notice each breath as a breath of life—and enjoy your journey to good health. The people you find in Natural Awakenings stand ready to take this journey with you.

Health & Wellness Glossary Acupressure: Based on the same system as acupuncture, but fingers and hands are used, instead of stimulation with needles, in order to restore the balanced flow of the body’s life energy (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”). This force moves through the body along 12 energy pathways, or meridians, which practitioners unblock and strengthen. Acupuncture: An ancient Oriental technique that stimulates the body’s ability to sustain and balance itself, based on the theory that an electromagnetic life-force (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”) is channeled in a continuous flow throughout the body via a network of ‘meridians.’ Disease is understood as an imbalance in the meridian system. Diagnosis of an imbalance is made by “reading” the pulse, face, tongue and body energy. To correct it, a practitioner inserts acupuncture needles at specific points along the meridians to stimulate or disperse the flow of life-force. Acupuncture principles include the yin and yang polarities and the associations of the five elements of fire, earth, metal, water and wood with bodily organs. Alexander Technique: A system of reeducating the body and mind to support and facilitate proper posture and ease of movement. Through gentle manual guidance, accompanied by verbal directions, the Alexander teacher coaches the student to become aware of unnecessary tension and to unlearn longstanding patterns of movement. The Alexander Technique is an established method for helping to improve chronic conditions such as back, shoulder or neck pain, nervous tension, poor coordination, breathing problems and vocal strain. It is frequently used by athletes and performing artists to improve performance level. Aromatherapy: An ancient healing art that uses the essential oils of herbs and flowers to treat emotional disorders such as stress and anxiety and a wide range of other ailments. Oils are massaged into the skin, inhaled or added to a water bath. Often used in conjunction with massage therapy, acupuncture, reflexology or other holistic treatments. Art Therapy: Uses the creative process of making art to improve and enhance physical, mental and emotional well-being and to deepen self-awareness. The therapist makes a diagnosis and determines treatment plans by encouraging a client to express his or her feelings and unconscious thoughts through the nonverbal creative process and by observing the forms and content created. Astrology: A system of traditions and beliefs that holds that the relative positions of celestial bodies either directly influence

life on Earth or correspond to events experienced on a human scale. Modern astrologers define astrology as a symbolic language, art form and type of divination that can provide information about personality and human affairs, aid in the interpretation of past and present events, and predict the future. Ayurveda: The oldest medical system known to man and a comprehensive spiritual teaching practiced in India for 4,000 years. It focuses on achieving and maintaining perfect health via the balance of the elements air, fire and water (illness is considered an excess of any element). A patient’s body type, determined according to ayurvedic principles, is the basis for individualized dietary regimens and other preventive therapeutic interventions. Ayurvedic prescriptions might include purification procedures for the restoration of biological rhythms; experience of expanded consciousness through meditation; nutritional counseling; stress reduction; enhancing neuromuscular conditions; and behavioral modification. Bee venom therapy (BVT): The therapeutic application of honeybee venom, through live bee stings, to bring relief and healing for various spinal, neural, joint or musculoskeletal ailments. Bioenergetics: A psychotherapy that works through the body to engage the emotions. Performing specified postures and exercises causes the release of layers of chronic muscular tension and defensiveness, termed “body armor.” The unlocking of feelings creates the opportunity for understanding and integrating them. Biofeedback: A relaxation technique that monitors internal body states and is used especially for stress-related conditions such as asthma, migraines, insomnia and high blood pressure. During biofeedback, patients monitor minute metabolic changes (e.g., temperature, heart rate and muscle tension), with the aid of sensitive machines. By consciously thinking, visualizing, moving, relaxing, etc., they learn which activities produce desirable changes in the internal processes being monitored. BodyTalk: Developed by chiropractor/ acupuncturist Dr. John Veltheim, BodyTalk is based upon bio-energetic psychology, dynamic systems theory, Chinese medicine and applied kinesiology. By integrating a series of tapping, breathing and focusing techniques, BodyTalk helps the body synchronize and balance its systems and strengthens the body’s innate knowledge of self-repair. BodyTalk is used to address a range of health challenges, including fibromyalgia, infections, parasites, chronic fatigue, allergies, addictions and cellular damage.

Natural Wellness Directory 2010-2011 Bodywork: Massage and the physical practices of yoga are perhaps the bestknown types of bodywork; both have proven successful in relieving tension and stress, promoting blood flow, loosening stiff muscles and stimulating the organs. Massage therapies encompass countless techniques, including Swedish massage, shiatsu and Rolfing. Other types of bodywork include martial arts practices like aikido, ki aikido and Tai chi chuan. Some others are the Alexander technique, Aston patterning, Bowen, Breema bodywork, Feldenkrais method, Hellerwork, polarity therapy, Rosen method, Rubenfeld synergy and Trager. Chelation therapy: A safe, painless, nonsurgical medical procedure that improves metabolic and circulatory function by removing undesirable heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and copper from the body. A series of intravenous injections of the synthetic amino acid EDTA are administered, usually in an osteopathic or medical doctor’s office. The EDTA blocks excess free radical production, protecting tissues and organs from further damage. Over time, injections may halt the progress of the underlying condition that triggers the development of various degenerative conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, and cancer. More recently, chelation therapy also has been used to reverse symptoms of atherosclerosis or arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) by removing obstructive plaque built up in the circulatory system. Chinese Medicine: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the world’s oldest and most complete systems of holistic health care. It combines the use of medicinal herbs, acupuncture, food therapy, massage and therapeutic exercise, along with the recognition that wellness in mind, body and emotions depends on the harmonious flow of life-force energy (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”). Chiropractic: Based on the premise that proper structural alignment permits free flow of nerve activity in the body. When spinal vertebrae are out of alignment, they put pressure on the spinal cord and the nerves radiating from it, potentially leading to diminished function and illness. Misalignment can be caused by physical trauma, poor posture and stress. The chiropractor seeks to analyze and correct these misalignments through spinal manipulation or adjustment. Colon Hydrotherapy: An internal bath that washes away old toxic waste accumulated along the walls of the colon. It is administered with pressurized water by a professional using special equipment. One colonic irrigation is the equivalent of approximately four to six enemas and cleans out matter that collects in the pockets and

kinks of the colon. The treatment is used as both a corrective process and for prevention of disease. Colonics are used for ailments such as constipation, psoriasis, acne, allergies, headaches and the common cold. Color therapy and colorpuncture: Color therapists believe that the vibrations of color waves can directly affect body cells and organs. Thus, different hues can treat illnesses and improve physical, emotional and spiritual health. Many practitioners also claim that the body emits an ‘aura,’ or energy field, with colors reflecting a person’s state of health. Color therapists apply colored lights or apply color mentally, through suggestion, to restore the body’s physical and psychic health. Colorpuncture combines the insights of light physics with the knowledge of the meridian points emphasized in Chinese acupuncture. The noninvasive technique is used to clear blockages in the meridians and restore healthy energy flow. Kirlian photographs track improvements. Another related sensory healing technique is light therapy, which attempts to restore well-being and can be successful in treating the depression known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Counseling/Psychotherapy: These terms encompass a broad range of practitioners, from career counselors, who offer advice and information, to psychotherapists, who treat depression, stress, addiction and emotional issues. Formats can vary from individual counseling to group therapy. In addition to verbal counseling techniques, some holistic therapists may use bodywork, ritual, energy healing and other alternative modalities as part of their practice. Craniosacral therapy (CST): A manual therapeutic procedure to remedy distortions in the structure and function of the craniosacral mechanism—the brain and spinal cord, the bones of the skull, the sacrum and interconnected membranes. Craniosacral work is based upon two major premises: that the bones of the skull can be manipulated, because they never completely fuse; and that the pulse of the cerebrospinal fluid can be balanced by a practitioner trained to detect variations in that pulse. CST is used to treat chronic pain, migraine headaches, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), ear and eye problems, balance problems, learning difficulties, dyslexia and hyperactivity. Crystal and gem therapy: Practitioners use quartz crystals and gemstones for therapeutic and healing purposes, asserting that the substances have recognizable energy frequencies and the capacity to amplify other frequencies in the body. They also absorb and store frequencies and can essentially be programmed to help effect healing. In the ancient art of ‘laying-on of stones,’ practitioners place crystals and

Natural Wellness Directory 2010-2011 gemstones on various parts of the body, corresponding to its chakra points (energy centers), in order to balance energy flow. Dance/movement therapy: A method of expressing thoughts and feelings through movement, developed during the 1940s. Participants, guided by trained therapists, are encouraged to move freely, sometimes to music. Dance/movement therapy can be practiced by people of all ages to promote self-esteem and gain insight into their own emotional problems, but is also used to help those with serious mental and physical disabilities. Dentistry (Holistic): Regards the mouth as a microcosm of the entire body. The oral structures and the whole body are seen as a unit. Holistic dentistry often incorporates such methods as homeopathy, biocompatibility testing and nutritional counseling. Most holistic dentists emphasize wellness and preventive care, while avoiding (and often recommending the removal of) silver-mercury fillings. Detoxification: The practice of resting, cleansing and nourishing the body from the inside out. According to some holistic practitioners, accumulated toxins can drain the body of energy and make it more susceptible to disease. Detoxification techniques may include fasts, special diets, sauna sweats and colon cleansing. Doula: A woman who supports an expectant mother through pregnancy, labor, birth and the postpartum period. Studies indicate that support in labor has profound benefits, including shorter labor, less desire for pain medication, lower rate of Caesarian delivery and more ease in initiation of breast feeding. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT): A self-help procedure founded by Gary Craig that combines fingertip tapping of key acupuncture meridian points while focusing on an emotional issue or health challenge. Unresolved, or ‘stuck,’ negative emotions, caused by a disruption in the body’s energy system, are seen as major contributors to most physical pains and diseases. These can remain stagnant and trapped until released by the tapping. EFT is easy to memorize and portable, so it can be done anywhere. Energy field work: The art and practice of realigning and re-attuning the body between the physical and the etheric and auric fields to assist in natural healing processes. Working directly with the energy field in and around the body, the practitioner channels and directs energy into the cells, tissues and organs of the patient’s body to effect healing on physical and nonphysical levels simultaneously. Sessions may or may not involve the physical laying on of hands. Environmental medicine: Explores the role of dietary and environmental allergens

in health and illness. Factors such as dust, mold, chemicals and certain foods may cause allergic reactions that can dramatically influence diseases, ranging from asthma and hay fever to headaches and depression. Enzyme therapy: Can be an important first step in restoring health and well-being by helping to remedy digestive problems. Plant and pancreatic enzymes are used in complementary ways to improve digestion and absorption of essential nutrients. Treatment includes enzyme supplements, coupled with a healthy diet that features whole foods. Feldenkrais® method: Helps students straighten out what founder Moshe Feldenkrais calls, “kinks in the brain.” Kinks are learned movement patterns that no longer serve a constructive purpose. They may have been adopted to compensate for a physical injury or to accommodate individuality in the social world. Students unlearn unworkable movements and discover better, personalized ways to move, using mind-body principles of slowed action, breathing, awareness and thinking about their feelings. Feng shui: The ancient Chinese system of arranging manmade spaces and elements to create or facilitate harmonious qi or chi (pronounced “chee”), or energy flow, by tempering or enhancing the energy where necessary. Feng shui consultants can be an asset to both personal and business spaces, either before or after the spaces are created. Flower remedies: Flower essences are recognized for their ability to improve wellbeing by eliminating negative emotions. In the 1930s, English physician Edward Bach concluded that negative emotions could lead to physical illness. His research also convinced him that flowers possessed healing properties that could be used to treat emotional problems. In the 1970s, Richard Katz completed Bach’s work and established the Flower Essence Society, which has registered some 100 essences from flowers in more than 50 countries. Functional medicine: A personalized medicine that focuses on primary prevention and deals with underlying causes, instead of symptoms, for serious chronic diseases. Treatments are grounded in nutrition and improved lifestyle habits and may make use of medications. The discipline uses a holistic approach to analyze and treat interdependent systems of the body and to create the dynamic balance integral to good health. Guided imagery and creative visualization: Uses positive thoughts, images and symbols to focus the mind on the workings of the body to accomplish a particular goal, desired outcome or physiological change, such as pain relief or healing of disease. This flow of thought

Natural Wellness Directory 2010-2011 can take many forms and involve, through the imagination, all the physical senses. Imagination is an important element of the visualization process; it helps create a mental picture of what is desired in order to transform life circumstances. Healing touch: A non-invasive, relaxing and nurturing energy therapy that helps to restore physical, emotional, mental and spiritual balance and support self-healing. A gentle touch is used on or near the fully-clothed client to influence the body’s inner energy centers and exterior energy fields. Healing touch is used to ease acute and chronic conditions, assist with pain management, encourage deep relaxation and accelerate wound healing. Herbal medicine: This oldest form of medicine uses natural plants in a wide variety of forms for their therapeutic value. Herbs produce and contain various chemical substances that act upon the body to strengthen its natural functions without the negative side effects of synthetic drugs. They may be taken internally or applied externally via teas, tinctures, extracts, oils, ointments, compresses and poultices. Holotropic breathwork: A self-exploration technique that combines breathing, evocative music and a specific form of bodywork to integrate one’s physical, psychological and spiritual dimensions. At workshops run by facilitators, participants try to access the four “levels” of experience that are available during breathing: sensory, biographical, perinatal and transpersonal. By accessing buried memories, individuals can relive their birth experience or traumatic life events, free up ‘stuck’ emotional viewpoints or experience a mystical state of awareness, such as connecting with the Universe. Homeopathy: A therapy that uses small doses of specially prepared plants and minerals to stimulate the body’s defense mechanisms and healing processes in order to cure illness. Homeopathy, taken from the Greek words homeos, meaning “similar,” and pathos, meaning “suffering,” employs the concept that “like cures like.” A remedy is individually chosen for a person based on its capacity to cause, if given in an overdose, physical and psychological symptoms similar to those the patient is experiencing. Hydrotherapy: The use of water, ice, steam and hot and cold temperatures to maintain and restore health. Treatments include full-body immersion, steam baths, saunas, sitz baths, colonic irrigation and the application of hot and/or cold compresses. Hydrotherapy is effective for treating a wide range of conditions and can easily be used at home as part of a self-care program. Hypnotherapy: A range of hypnosis techniques that allow practitioners to bypass the conscious mind and access the

Natural Wellness Directory 2010-2011 subconscious. The altered state that occurs under hypnosis has been compared to a state of deep meditation or transcendence, in which the innate recuperative abilities of the psyche are allowed to flow more freely. The subject can achieve greater clarity regarding his or her own wants and needs, explore other events or periods of life that require resolution, or generally develop a more positive attitude. Often used to help people lose weight or stop smoking, it is also used in the treatment of phobias, stress and as an adjunct to the treatment of illnesses. Integrative medicine: This holistic approach combines conventional Western medicine with complementary alternative treatments, in order to simultaneously treat mind, body and spirit. Geared to the promotion of health and the prevention of illness, it neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts alternative therapies, without serious evaluation. Intuitive arts: A general term for various methods of divination, such as numerology, psychic reading, and tarot reading. Individuals may consult practitioners to seek information about the future or insights into personal concerns or their personality. Numerology emphasizes the significance of numbers derived from the spelling of names, birth dates and other significant references; psychics may claim various abilities, from finding lost objects and persons to communicating with the spirits of the dead; tarot readers interpret a deck of cards containing archetypal symbols. Iridology: Analysis of the delicate structure of the iris, the colored portion of the eye, to reveal information about conditions within the body. More than 90 specific zones on each iris, for a combined total of 180-plus zones, correspond to specific areas of the body. Because body weaknesses are often noticeable in the iris long before they are discernible through blood work or other laboratory analysis, iridology can be a useful tool for preventive self-care. Jin Shin (or Jin Shin Jyutsu): A gentle, non-invasive energy-balancing art and philosophy that embodies a life of simplicity, calmness, patience and selfcontainment. Practitioners employ simple acupressure techniques, using their fingers and hands on a fully-clothed client to help eliminate stress, create emotional equilibrium, relieve pain and alleviate acute or chronic conditions. Kinesiology/applied kinesiology: The study of muscles and their movement. Applied kinesiology tests the relative strength and weakness of selected muscles to identify decreased function in body organs and systems, as well as imbalances and restrictions in the body’s energy flow. Some tests use acupuncture meridians and

others analyze interrelationships among muscles, organs, the brain and the body’s energy field. Applied kinesiology is also used to check the body’s response to treatments that are being considered. Macrobiotics: An Eastern philosophy best known in the West for its dietary principles. Macrobiotic theory posits that there is a natural order to all things. By synchronizing our eating habits with the cycles of nature, we can achieve a fuller sense of balance within ourselves and with the world around us. Although not a specific diet, it emphasizes low-fat and high-fiber foods, whole grains, vegetables, sea vegetables and seeds, all cooked in accordance with macrobiotic principles. Magnetic field therapy: Electromagnetic energy and the human body have a vital and valid interrelationship, making it possible to use magnetic field therapy as an aid in diagnosing and treating physical and emotional disorders. This process is reported to relieve symptoms and may, in some cases, retard the cycle of new diseases. Magnets and electromagnetic therapy devices are now being used to eliminate pain, facilitate the healing of broken bones and counter the effects of stress. Meditation: The intentional directing of attention to one’s inner self. Methods and practices to achieve a meditative state are based upon various principles using the body or mind and may employ control or letting-go mechanisms. Techniques include the use of imagery, mantras and observation, and the control of breathing. Research has shown that regular meditation can contribute to psychological and physiological wellbeing. As a spiritual practice, meditation is used to facilitate a mystical sense of oneness with a higher power or the Universe. It can also help reduce stress and alleviate stressrelated ailments, such as anxiety and high blood pressure. Mediumship: A medium professes to mentally see, hear and/or sense persons or entities in a spiritual dimension, and convey messages from them to people in the physical world. Readings focus on evidential messages from recognizable personalities in the spirit world. The messages are delivered as guidance for one’s “highest good.” Midwife: A birth attendant who assists a woman through the prenatal, labor, birth and postpartum stages of pregnancy. The mother is encouraged to be involved and to feel in control of her birthing experience. Midwives are knowledgeable about normal pregnancy, labor, birth and pain relief options. They respect the process of birth as an innate and familiar process. Certified nurse-midwives are registered nurses who have received advanced training and passed a national certification exam.

Natural Wellness Directory 2010-2011 Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Techniques (NAET): A non-invasive, drug free, natural modality that tests for and eliminate allergies. NAET uses a blend of selective energy balancing, testing and treatment procedures from acupuncture, acupressure, allopathy, chiropractic, kinesiology and nutritional medicine. One allergen is treated at a time. Naturopathy: A comprehensive and eclectic system whose philosophy is based upon working in harmony with the body’s natural healing abilities. Naturopathy incorporates a broad range of natural methods and substances aimed to promote health. Training may include the study of specific approaches, including massage, manipulation, acupuncture, acupressure, counseling, applied nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy and minor surgery plus basic obstetrics for assistance with natural childbirth. Network chiropractic: Uses Network Spinal Analysis (NSA), a system of assessing and contributing to spinal and neural integrity, as well as health and wellness. Founded and developed by Donald Epstein. Practitioners employ gentle force to the spine to help the body eliminate mechanical tension in the neurological system. The body naturally develops strategies to dissipate stored tension/energy, thus enhancing self-regulation of tension and spinal interference. Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP): A systematic approach to changing the limiting patterns of thought, behavior and language. Through conversation, practitioners observe the client’s language, eye movements, posture, breathing and gestures, in order to detect and help change unconscious patterns linked to the client’s emotional state. Orthomolecular medicine: Employs vitamins, minerals and amino acids to create nutritional content and balance in the body. Orthomolecular medicine targets a wide range of conditions, including depression, hypertension, cancer, schizophrenia and other mental and physiological disorders. Oxygen therapies: Alters the body’s chemistry to help overcome disease, promote repair and improve overall function. Properly applied, oxygen may be used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including infections, circulatory problems, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, allergies, cancer and multiple sclerosis. The major types of oxygen therapy used to treat illness are hyperbaric oxygen and ozone. Hydrogen peroxide therapy (oral or intravenous) can be dangerous and should be avoided.

Real Time EEG Neurofeedback: Involves direct training of brain function. Rebirthing breathwork: Also known as conscious connected breathing, or vivation. Rebirthing is a means to access and release unresolved emotions. Natural Wellness Directory 2010-2011 Regression therapies: Operate on the assumption that many physical, mental and emotional problems are extensions of unresolved problems from the past, such as childhood traumas. The practitioner uses hypnosis, or other altered states of consciousness, and relaxation techniques to access the source of “unfinished business,” and helps clients to analyze, integrate and release past traumas that are interfering with their current lives. Reflexology: A natural healing art based upon the principle that there are reflexes in the feet and hands that correspond to every part of the body. Correctly stimulating and applying pressure to the feet or hands increases circulation and promotes specifically designated bodily and muscular functions. Reiki: Means “universal life-force energy.” A method of activating and balancing the life-force (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”). Practitioners use light hand placements to channel healing energies to organs and glands or to align the body’s chakras (energy centers). Various techniques can ease emotional and mental distress, heal chronic and acute physical problems and achieve spiritual focus and clarity. Reiki can be a valuable addition to the work of chiropractors, massage therapists, nurses and others for whom the use of touch is essential and appropriate. Rolfing structural integration (Rolfing): A hands-on technique for deep tissue manipulation of the myofascial system, which is composed of the muscles and the connective tissue, or fascia, in order to restore the body’s natural alignment and sense of integration. As the body is released from old patterns and postures, the range and freedom of physical and emotional expression increases. Rolfing can help ease pain and chronic stress, enhance neurological functioning, improve posture and restore flexibility. Shamanism: An ancient healing tradition which believes that loss of power is the real source of illness and that all healing includes the spiritual dimension. Shamanic healing usually involves induction into an altered state of consciousness and journeying into the spirit world to regain personal power and to access the powers of nature and of teachers. Shamanic healing may be taken literally or employed symbolically, but in or out of its cultural context, the tradition can be both self-empowering and self-healing. Shiatsu: The most widely known form of acupressure, Shiatsu is a Japanese word meaning finger pressure. The technique applies varying degrees of pressure to balance the life energy that flows through specific pathways, or meridians, in the body. Used to release tension and strengthen weak

areas in order to facilitate even circulation, cleanse cells and improve the function of vital organs. Shiatsu may be used to help diagnose, prevent and relieve many chronic and acute conditions that manifest on both physical and emotional levels. Sound healing: Employs vocal and instrumental tones, generated internally or externally. When sounds are produced with healing intent, they can create sympathetic resonance in the physical and energy bodies. Sound healing also is used to bring discordant energy into balance and harmony. Spiritual healing/counseling: Practiced in two forms. In one, the healer uses thought or touch to align his or her spiritual essence with that of the client. The healer works to either balance the spiritual field or shift the perceptual base of the client to create harmony between mind and body and draw the client into the active presence of Divine Spirit. In the other, the healer transforms healing energy into a vibrational frequency that the client can receive and comfortably assimilate, reminding the person’s intuitive core of its inherent healing ability. Tantra: Has emerged as a modern spiritual path of embodied consciousness, with roots in ancient Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Tantra views the ‘spiritual’ as being directly present within the ‘physical’ and respects sensory experience as a vehicle for accessing higher states of awareness. Tantric practices balance the chakras (energy centers) and can contribute to a sense of presence, intimacy and fulfillment in all aspects of living. Tantra Tai chi: A recently developed practice of Tai chi/qigong-style body movements designed to be performed with a partner. It can enhance intimacy by sequentially and simultaneously focusing attention on the root, or sexual center, near the base of the spine, the heart or love center in the midchest region and the upper spiritual center in the head. The cycling of energy through these chakra centers encourages a blended experience of intimate presence with one’s own internal being and one’s partner. The Results System: A non-intrusive system using kinesiology (biofeedback via muscle testing) to identify and release body stressors at a cellular level, allowing the body to operate at the highest levels of efficiency possible. It may have a positive affect on conditions such as chemical imbalance, learning disorders, attention deficit disorders and alcoholism. Thermography (thermal imaging): A diagnostic technique that uses an infrared camera to measure temperature variations on the surface of the body, producing images that reveal sites of inflammation and abnormal tissue growth. Inflammation is recognized as the earliest stage of nearly all major health challenges.

Trager approach (psychophysical integration): A system of movement reeducation that seeks to address the mental roots of muscle tension. By gently rocking, cradling and moving the client’s fully clothed body, the practitioner encourages him or her to see that physically restrictive patterns can be changed. The Trager approach includes “mentastics,” simple, active, self-induced movements that can be done by the client during regular daily activities. Yoga: Practical application of the ancient Indian Vedic teachings. The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj which means “union” or “to join,” and refers to the joining of man’s physical, mental and spiritual elements. The goal of good health is accomplished through a combination of techniques, including asanas (or postures), controlled breathing, relaxation, meditation and diet and nutrition. Yoga therapy: The application of yoga principles, methods and techniques to empower individuals to progress towards greater health and freedom from disease, representing a first effort to integrate traditional yogic concepts and techniques with Western medical and psychological knowledge. Yoga therapy aims at the holistic treatment of various kinds of psychological or somatic dysfunctions, ranging from emotional distress to back problems. Michael Pollan’s 12 Commandments of Food 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Don’t eat anything your greatgrandmother wouldn’t recognize as food. Avoid products containing ingredients you can’t pronounce. Don’t eat anything that won’t eventually rot. Avoid food products that carry health claims. Shop the peripheries of the supermarket; stay out of the middle. Better yet, buy food somewhere else: the farmers’ market or community supported agriculture.

7. Pay more, eat less. 8. Eat a wide variety of species. 9. Eat food from animals that eat grass. 10. Cook, and if you can, grow some of your own food.

11. Eat meals, and eat them only at tables. 12. Eat deliberately, with other people whenever possible, and always with pleasure. ccording to the Seafood Choices Alliance, an international program linking the seafood industry and ocean conservation community, more than 75 percent of the world’s fish stocks are overexploited: We are consuming fish and other marine life faster than their populations can replenish themselves. To help us easily make sustainable seafood choices, several environmental and conservation organizations distill their research into handy consumer guides. Each advises which choices are high in heart-healthy omega-3s, and which have questionable levels of mercury, PCBs or other contaminants. Seafood Watch publishes downloadable regional and national Seafood Watch pocket guides, and offers an online sushi guide, that rate seafood as “best choices, “good alternatives or “avoid. Visit SeafoodWatch.org. Blue Ocean Institute’s wallet-size Guide to Ocean-Friendly Seafood, available free by email request, rates fish and seafood within five categories. Its wallet-size OceanFriendly Sushi Guide is available as a PDF download.
