A

s we were preparing this month’s issue on Healthy Mind, we wanted to also write about the topic of love since February’s holiday is Valentine’s Day. But what a large topic that is! There are more ‘types’ and definitions than you can fit in a Hallmark card. In his 1973 book “Colors of Love”, J.A. Lee defined six varieties that you may not be as familiar with: Eros is romantic, passionate, love. In this type of relationship, love is life’s most important thing. It is typified by a search for physical beauty or an ideal type. Ludus is a game-playing or uncommitted love. Lying is part of the game. A person who pursues ludic love may have many conquests but remains uncommitted. Storge (STORE-gay) is a slow developing, friendship-based loved. People with this type of relationship like to participate in activities together. Often storge results in a long-term relationship in which sex might not be very intense or passionate. Pragma is a pragmatic, practical, mutually beneficial relationship. It may be somewhat unromantic. A person who leans toward this type of relationship may look for a partner at work or where the person is spending time. Sex is likely to be seen as a technical matter needed for producing children, if they are desired. Mania is an obsessive or possessive love, jealous and extreme. A person in love this way is likely to do something crazy or silly, such as stalking. The movie Fatal Attraction was about this type. Agape (a-GOP-aye) is a gentle, caring, giving type of love, brotherly love, not concerned with the self. It is relatively rare. Mother Theresa showed this kind of love for impoverished people. It all seems so much smaller than the real thing, doesn’t it? Perhaps that is why poetry may do the best job describing Love. Luckily for us, our contributors this month write poetically about loving ourselves and others throughout the issue. Perhaps the best gift for Valentine’s Day is the gift of reminding your loved ones of the reasons why you love them. And how about writing a list for yourself...when was the last time you made a list of how great you are? Isn’t it nice to remember how Magnificent you are?! Maybe it’s easier to see the magnificence in others when we can see it in ourselves. Appreciation and gratitude are intangibles that are far, far more important in the long run than making a reservation once a year. These reminders can go a long way in loving ourselves, so that we in turn may love others. And, we hope of course, that the content of these pages may help you on that path as well.

“You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.” - Buddha

coverartist Creative Dreams by Lori Portka A personal loss led Portka to begin painting again at 30-something for the first time since the tenth grade, a process she says has opened her heart even more deeply. Inspired by Australian photographer and filmmaker Hailey Bartholomew’s documentary, 365 Grateful, about living on the sunny side of life, Portka embarked upon her own project, A Hundred Thank-Yous, creating and giving away 100 paintings to 100 people that have touched her life, she says, “in a beautiful way.” View the artist’s portfolio and follow her blog at LoriPortka.com.

CHANGE YOUR LIFE IN ONE SESSION! RE-TRAIN YOUR BRAIN MIND OVER MATTER Have you heard about the new problem with access to medications? Two million people have prescriptions for medications for ADHD, but many are unable to get them because of shortages. Once the patents expire on medications, the manufacturers are sometimes less willing to produce them because the loss of their patents means they no longer have the exclusive right to manufacture the drugs and that reduces their profits. Availability of medications is also affected by the fact that some of them are being used recreationally. The popular author, Dr. Bernie Siegel, has for some time now been urging us all to take responsibility for our own well-being. He says that the first step is for us to love ourselves enough to care for our bodies and our minds. The next step is to learn of the many possible Debera Jensen alternatives to taking medications. For example, Dr. Herbert Benson of the Harvard Medical School, has demonstrated that we can reduce DIRECTOR our levels of harmful cholesterol by learning to deal with stress through relaxation. High blood pressure can often be controlled in the same way. And here at the Fast Focusing Center, we help people with ADD or ADHD through the use of a variety of mind-body techniques. This approach has produced dramatic results for some of our clients. Recently, a physician called us to ask what we were doing in our work with a patient he was seeing for Parkinson’s disease. He told us that the patient’s symptoms were moderating and he said that it was due to what we were doing. We offer a variety of classes and workshops about mind-body techniques and we also provide one-on-one sessions to teach these techniques.

Wisdom from Between Lives

Dr. Joe Dispenza Back in Denver

M

D

elanie Smithson, MA, BC-DMT, LPC, CHt, of the Smithson Clinic in Denver, is now offering specialized “Life Between Lives” hypnotherapy sessions to assist clients in letting go, finding life purpose and more. “Now, more than ever, our guides are impressing upon us the importance of letting go with the shifts that are coming,” says Smithson. “They are telling us that resistance and rigidity will be what causes the most chaos and suffering in the next few years. Our guides want us to let go, so that we can experience freedom and joy. These hypnotherapy sessions offer relevant lessons whether or not a shift is actually happening. Resistance and rigidity cause havoc and suffering in most aspects of life. Letting go just makes sense.” According to Smithson, “Life Between Lives” hypnotherapy is the subject of two books, Journey of Souls and Destiny of Souls by Michael Newton. He used special hypnotherapy techniques to tap into the space between our lives where our consciousness survives to discover why we incarnate into physical beings here on Earth. Melanie Smithson, MA, BC-DMT, LPC, CHt is a certified Life Between Lives Hypnotherapist and offers private and group sessions in Denver. 303-2717659. r Joe Dispenza of “The Secret” fame is back in Colorado for another round of his signature workshops “Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life” in February. In this 3-part series, Dr. Joe will take you through interactive exercises and intense meditations that allow you to release negative habits and emotions, eliminate self-destructive behaviors, and rewire your brain with new thoughts and beliefs that will help heal your mind and body and create new results. With the dynamic combination of science and accessible how-to, Dispenza will teach you how to harness the power of the most important tool in your body and life - your brain and mind. “The great leaders and heroes in history all had one thing in common,” said Dr. Dispenza. “They were able to dream of something that did not exist and make it happen. By harnessing the power of their mind, they were able to make thought more real than anything else. By believing in themselves, and relentlessly pursuing their dream with certainty and conviction, they brought about much needed change and created a new reality – for themselves and the world.” Introductory lecture and Intensive 2-day workshop held in Thornton at the DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton, 83 E 120th St., starts Friday, Feb 17, 7pm. Friday Lecture Only: $40/Advance, $50/Door; Full workshop early-bird price, $240 (incl lunch Sat). After Feb 8, $280. More info 970-443-0732 or BellaSpark.com. See ad page 5.

Meditation Boosts Brain Power

U

niversity of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) researchers first discovered that specific regions in the brains of long-term meditators were larger and contained more gray matter than those of a non-meditating control group; that was in 2009. Now, a follow-up study by the UCLA Laboratory of Neuro Imaging suggests people that meditate regularly also display stronger neuronal connections between brain regions and less age-related atrophy (shrinkage) in all areas of the brain. The study comprised 27 active meditation practitioners (average age 52) and 27 control subjects, matched by age and sex. The number of years of meditation ranged from five to 46 and included various styles. Using a type of brain imaging known as diffusion tensor imaging, or DTI—a new imaging mode that provides insights into the structural connectivity of the brain—the researchers found that long-term meditators have white matter fibers that are either more numerous, more dense or more insulated, throughout the brain. Although such tissue tends to decline with age, the study suggests that it can be preserved through active meditation practices. Researcher Eileen Luders remarks, “If practiced regularly and over years, meditation may slow down aging-related brain atrophy, perhaps by positively affecting the immune system. Meditation appears to be a powerful mental exercise with the potential to change the physical structure of the brain.”

ALCOHOL IMPAIRS RECOVERY FROM ILLNESS

R

esearchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School that collected blood from volunteers to study how drinking alcohol affects monocytes, the white blood cells that are part of the immune system, made an unwelcome discovery. Alcohol can worsen the effects of disease and lengthen the recovery period following trauma, injury or burns. It both impairs the body’s antiviral immune response, especially in the liver, and increases inflammation, so think twice before downing another hot toddy. Source: BioMed Central

healthbriefs LOVING OURSELVES, LOVING OUR BODIES

F

eelings of stress, depression, or anxiety can take an enormous physical toll on our bodies as well as our psyche. Our hectic lives make it all too easy to neglect our mental and physical health and we forget to nurture our bodies and our emotional selves in order live an optimal and joyful life. Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge eating disorder can develop when complex feelings are internalized and food becomes a tool to try to regain a sense of control in life. These dangerous disorders can separate us from the body’s intuitive signals and they can develop into a vicious spiral of shame, guilt, and

physical self-harm. If we try to fill an emotional void with food, our hunger only grows in intensity. While food may seem to be a way to soothe uncomfortable feelings, control can easily get away from us if the hunger is caused by body image struggles, low self-esteem, or traumatic experiences. Some warning signs of eating disorders include mood swings, expressing dissatisfaction with the body despite being healthily proportionate, gaining or losing significant weight in a short period of time, avoiding eating with others, or large quantities of food missing. Eating disorders develop out of a sense of feeling “not good enough” or not in control of life. If you’re concerned

that a loved one might be developing an eating disorder or if you have been struggling with one yourself, please contact a mental health professional with expertise in this area. February is a month to show love and appreciation. Shower yourself with the same acceptance and admiration that you might give to a loved one. Those struggling with eating disorders and body image issues often see themselves as different or separate than others. Take care of yourself in ways that soothe your soul and listen to your intuition; give your body what it desires, and allow your emotional self to feel its true feelings without judgment. Once we can learn to accept ourselves for who we are, inside and out, we can deepen the connection between our bodies, our minds, and our spirits and live in harmony and peace. Kate Daigle is a Registered Psychotherapist and National Certified Counselor treating men and women with eating disorders, body image and self-esteem concerns. See listing page 30.

FEBRUARY BLAHS

T

he New Year’s energetic ‘oomph’ to start working out, eating healthier, meditating and dancing the Argentine tango has gradually started to wane. It’s not that you don’t want to do those things anymore, it’s just that your motivation is dissipating like air slowly released from a balloon. How do we sustain these new activities even when our old patterns start pulling us back? First, evaluate the reason you started the new activity in the first place. Is it something you love to do or is it something you feel like you should be doing? If you truly love doing something, it will easier to stick with. Next, make small changes that make it easy for you to accommodate your new, healthier lifestyle. If weekend spelunking is your hobby but you can’t seem to find the time, perhaps there are too many obstacles in your way. Move closer to the caves. Have your gear ready to go by the door. Find a local group of folks who like to explore the stalactites just as much as you do. Be sure to surround yourself with supportive friends. Spend more time with active, uplifting friends rather than the negative folks who seem to do nothing but complain. Once you start spreading your personal brand of sunshine, you’ll find that a different set of people are attracted to you. As the saying goes, “Change yourself and change who you hang out with.” Lastly, if you are still finding it difficult to motivate and inspire yourself, contact a professional consultant who can help set you on the right path and find clarity. With a few simple changes, you can easily stay motivated with your New Year’s Resolutions through the Blahs of February to the Ides of March and beyond. Susannah Carroll is a motivation consultant who works with individuals, business executives entrepreneur, sales teams and more. See listing page 30. natural awakenings

healthbriefs NATURAL SOLUTIONS THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE FOR PAIN called the homeopathy of bodywork, Bowen Therapy utilizes FOR SLEEP APNEA Sometimes subtle inputs to the body (known as moves), stimulating the body to heal

A

ccording to the National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research, an estimated six million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, a disorder marked by breathing pauses during sleep that may occur up to 30 times per hour. That results in poor quality slumber, leaves individuals feeling overtired and may lead to other health challenges, such as high blood pressure. Mouthpieces, breathing devices and surgery are often recommended to treat sleep apnea, but natural, noninvasive herbal solutions are now available, as well. “Most people believe that central sleep apnea is caused by a sagging soft pallet or by some other obstructive tissue in the throat, but that’s not so,” Steven Frank of Nature’s Rite Remedies explains. “According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, it occurs because the area of your brain that controls your breathing doesn’t send the correct signals to your breathing muscles.” This reduced signaling causes breathing to go beyond shallow and simply stop altogether. “After a short period of time, the brain realizes the need to breathe and forces the individual to make a rapid inhalation to restart respiration.” Frank advises that, “It is this rapid inhalation that drags the sagging soft tissues into the airway.” After struggling to sleep comfortably with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask, Frank created his Sleep Apnea Relief formula of simple herbs, including lobelia, thyme and cramp bark, which according to the Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine intensify the signal from the brain to the diaphragm during sleep. “The herbs also are known to increase the gas-transfer efficiency of the lungs and relax some of the skeletal muscles that can obstruct this signal,” says Frank. Nature’s Rite Remedies offers a product that company founder and CEO Steven Frank, a master herbalist, developed to solve his own sleep apnea problem. itself, often profoundly. Bowen Therapy is ideal for anyone who may have tried everything else and still has pain, as well as children, the elderly, and the infirm. Many people have significant relief after just one session. The Bowen Technique communicates with the nervous system through a connective tissue layer called fascia and acupuncture meridians. As the body receives this information it begins to balance and heal itself. This method has been shown to relieve pain, insomnia, digestive disorders, anxiety, colic, headaches, and allergies. While not a cure, it also seems to ease the symptoms of Parkinsons, Raynauds and Tourettes syndrome, if done on a monthly basis. This modality is very different than what most people have experienced. During a treatment the client lies on a massage table fully clothed, no undressing necessary. The practitioner applies gentle pressure to specific points using a motion that rolls against tendons and ligaments. After a series of these moves there is a 2-minute rest while the body assimilates the information just given. The treatment continues with more moves in different places and more rests. Most people report an immediate feeling of intense relaxation and a release of muscular tension. Jackie Burson is a certified Bowen Therapist and teaches continuing education for the NCBTMB (National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork). 303-945-9780 or jackiesue24@gmail.com. For information on the Bowen Technique, see www.Bowtech.com. See listing page 29.

WHAT IS TIBETAN CRANIAL TECHNIQUE?

P

reviously known as Skull Moving in Tibet and Nepal, Tibetan Cranial Technique (TCT) originated in the Tibetan Highlands approximately 3000 years ago and focuses on fine-tuning the bones in the skull, neck and jaw based on pulse reading. Any head trauma, from a slight bump to a major accident, can cause compression or misalignment in the skull. Blood vessels around the injured area become inflamed and form scar tissue causing Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) to circumvent the area allowing nerves and brain tissue to ‘dry out,’ reducing nerve transmission and impairing optimum health. Cerebrospinal Fluid is a clear, colorless liquid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord providing support, lubrication and cushioning. It is essential for proper functioning as it delivers nutrients and removes toxic substances from the central nervous system. Certified TC Practitioners are professionally trained to fine-tune cranial structures, allowing CSF to move evenly around scar tissue. TC has been used to address a wide variety of health issues from pinched nerves and migraines to autism. “We’re working on the first systems of the body: the brain and the spinal column,” explains Shar Lee, founder of the Tibetan Cranial Association. “CSF volume increases during our work. It’s quite amazing.” The best way to learn about TC is to experience a session with a certified practitioner or an apprentice. Apprentices offer sessions free of charge as a service to the community until they graduate to practitioner. Erin Jay works with The Tibetan Cranial Association. An informational lecture and demo will be held in Boulder Friday, February 17 with low cost sessions Saturday 2/18 and Sunday 2/19. TibetanCranial.org.

greenliving Myths and Misconceptions about Solar Energy for Your Home By Terry Chriswell with Eric Krohn, Golden Solar

I

f you’re like me, you don’t know very much about solar energy, but you hear about it all the time. In Colorado, with 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s probably a good investment, right? You know it would be better for the environment and will probably save you money in the long run, but that’s about it. Here’s some of my biggest questions, explained by Eric at Golden Solar.

Solar panels will offset my electric bills when I heat my home and water; is that right and is that the biggest benefit? There are typically two types of residential Solar: solar thermal which heats your water, and solar photovoltaic systems generate electricity. The biggest benefits for both of these types are the reduction or elimination of ever-increasing energy rates by the utility company. Believe me, if the utility companies could figure out how to charge you for the sun, they would! That’s a big project isn’t it? Actually, the process from the customer’s standpoint is pretty painless. Most systems can be put up in a week or two. Processing the rebates, working with permitting and the inspections are handled by us. It does not require you or your family to leave your home.

Who knows what they will be like in 5 years or in 10 years? I can fix your payment for 20 years on a lease, and more than likely below what you’re paying now. Do I have to hire other people like electricians or do you handle everything? Golden Solar uses professional installers with North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) educated, and a master electrician on all jobs. Not everyone does; you have to be careful that professionals are doing the job! What do I have to do once you install it? Nothing, you can go by your inverter and we’ll show you how to check the production. There is no maintenance, no cleaning the panels or anything. We also guarantee our installation for 10 years. The panels

themselves are guaranteed 25 years! The inverters can range from 15 to 25 years too! What’s the deal with government rebates and tax credits? We handle all of the rebate paperwork for you; there are very specific requirements we need to follow. As for the tax benefits that would be for your tax consultant and the client to discuss as I’m not a licensed tax consultant. However, as an example if your after-rebate price is $10,000, your tax credit would be $3,000. The rebates have been set and the clock is ticking. The tax credit is good thru 2015. Why isn’t everyone going solar? In my opinion, the upfront cost has in the past inhibited people from doing this. Now, with prices coming down on panels, and the availability of a zerodown lease, everyone should look at it! How does it look from the inside? If you keep your panels flush to the roof, at first glance you wouldn’t even notice them. Does insurance cover any problems I might have with it, and would a homeowners association cover it? Your homeowners insurance will cover the system when you own it for things like hail. However, leased systems are covered by the leasing company. For the rest of my interview with Eric and more questions answered, go to MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com. See ad page 22.

How could I ever afford it? Affording a solar system has become much more attractive, when you factor in the tax credit, upfront rebate and performance incentives. We’ve seen a 70% reduction in panel prices in the past few years. However, the utility company rebates are running out, with no plans to renew. So now is the time to act! Do I really save that much money by going solar? By going solar, you are hedging yourself against ever-increasing electricity rates, and inflation. natural awakenings

localinsights How to ‘Grow’ Your Child’s Brain By Tami Eslich

T

he concept of ‘right’ brain and ‘left’ brain is fairly well known, but not many people realize that the two halves develop at different times and at different rates. The proper stimulation at the right times may be crucial for your child’s healthy development. In the womb and during the first few years of life, brain growth is focused almost exclusively on the right hemisphere, the big picture to the world. The right brain drives big muscle tasks, allowing the baby to move arms and legs and turn their head. This is the foundation on which all future skills will be built and will only develop via movement and stimulation from the environment. A normal 0-2 year-old puts everything in their mouth, throws and dumps things out to explore their world and stimulate their brain in a necessary way. Around age 2 growth switches mostly to the left brain, the center of small picture thinking and first words. Then, development switches back and forth between left and right until about the age of 10, when the brain reaches full, adult size. This back and forth may explain changes in hand writing, periods of stuttering, or difficulty controlling their actions. If both ‘halves’ of the brain do not develop appropriately and work together, imbalances in behavior, academics and socialization can occur. Children with stronger left brain (the Intelligence Quotient side) development can be phenomenal with numbers, calculations and reading, but struggle with understanding the big picture, social skills and communication. This is what we see with Autism, Asperger’s and ADHD. Those with stronger right brain (the Emotional Quotient side) make friends easily, have great social skills, are athletic, but tend to struggle

in the classroom. This is what we see in children with dyslexia, learning disorders and processing concerns. The human brain is very complex and we are the only species on the planet that is born with an undeveloped brain. A newborn’s brainpower is limited to basic life support: sleeping, eating, breathing, pooping and of course, screaming. However, the necessary sensory overload required for healthy development starts as soon as the child is born and relies entirely on movement and stimulation from the environment. This is why it is crucial to limit TV and computer exposure at early ages. Children require stimulation, exploration and real interaction to develop healthy brains. Your Second Brain

Stilling Your Mind

By Karen Kurtak

B

here is a reason why so many Complementary and Alternative (CAM) practitioners look first to digestive health in solving their patients’ health problems…the ‘second brain’ exists in the digestive tract! This second brain is the enteric nervous system or ENS and it functions similarly to our Big Brain. It even produces and stores the majority of neurotransmitters-90% of serotonin and 50% of dopamine are found in the lumen of the gut. Ever had a ‘gut’ feeling? The gut also contains a large part of our immune system and several unique hormones such as ghrelin, an appetite-related hormone, which are intricately woven into every part of our physiology. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the gut correlates to the Earth element. It is our connection to the Earth. According to Pankaj J Pasricha, professor of Gastroenterology at Stanford University, “It is the engine that transforms energy in the environment into energy that we can use.” It is a commonly accepted theory in anthropology that as primates became more efficient at deriving nutrients from food, the size of the gut decreased up to 60% as the size of the brain increased. This shift of energy from our original, Earth-gut brain to our “Big Brain” (coined by Heribert Watzke) allowed us to influence our environment rather than being victims of it. Over time this fundamental shift has brought humankind into the Anthropocene age, in which human impact on the environment will remain forever etched in the geologic record. The level of stress and the insatiable need for stimulation in our society reflects the ongoing movement towards the Big Brain and away from the Earth-gut brain. This has given birth to a new health condition called “sympathetic overdrive” in which our “fight or flight” response is over-activated in proportion to the more serene “rest and digest” response. Circulation to the gut becomes so diminished that it literally wilts. Immune function, neurotransmitter production, hormone signaling and the ability to digest are all compromised. Many of the chronic diseases that are pathognomonic of our society (obesity, diabetes, ADHD, irritable bowel syndrome, autoimmune disease, etc) can each be scientifically attributed to this one scenario. To restore optimum health to the gut, we may first need to learn to manage stressors in our daily lives. A certified Stress Manager can help us identify stressors and give us tools to manage them. Or you can begin right now by practicing a simple exercise from Qi Gong: Sit or lie quietly and bring your attention to your breath. As you inhale press your belly out as if it is a balloon filling with air. As you exhale, pull you belly in as if you are trying to tough your naval to your spine. Repeat 100 times daily. She currently practices Traditional Chinese Medicine and Functional Nutrition at the Grossman Wellness Center in Golden. KarenKurtak.com. See ad page 7.

y the time the average person reaches 65, two million commercials have whizzed in front of his eyes. In the past 20 years, these commercials have gotten snappier and shorter, with scenes changing every second, the only pause occurring after three rapid changes to throw off the monotony. The over-stimulation of our senses create an intolerance for silence, stillness and simplicity. Many busy, successful people instinctually crave just a few moments away from the thousands of interruptions of each day. In the hustle of everyday life, people feel a need for peace. However, our minds have become accustomed to distractions, and even those who do get away might find they have trouble relaxing. Who’s in charge of your thinking? The way to peace is to learn how to control your mind. Get it into shape, start training it and begin to teach it how to be still. To get a grip on your mind, you have to be firm and loving, setting aside at least five or ten minutes a day to focus and think exactly what you want it to think. A good way to start this training is to observe something for a few minutes at a time.

Orange Exercise Assess your ability to concentrate by trying this simple exercise. On a table, place an orange in front of you about 1 ½ feet away. Examine it slowly, studying its surface, keeping your mind on it, and do not let any thoughts or fantasies distract you for three minutes. Set a timer so you know when time is up. Were there any thoughts not directly related to the orange? Did you find your mind wandering to other things? Did you see yourself looking at the orange and feeling a bit foolish? If so, then you were letting yourself be distracted and have an opportunity to strengthen your mind. Stick to it with love and discipline, and know that each time you sit and focus, you are getting stronger.. In time, you will relish the quiet and the stillness of a disciplined mind. You will be thankful for putting in the hard work. And in the space that your unruly mind used to govern, you will find the opportunity to truly meditate, and you will be filled with the most profound peace and life moving inside you that you have ever known. The good news: Such fates are far from inevitable. “People seem to expect that as soon as we start to need reading glasses, we should also expect some of these cognitive issues to arise, but it does not need to be that way,” says Naples, Florida-based Neurology Doctor David Perlmutter, co-author of Power up Your Brain. “You can absolutely do things early on in life and throughout your lifetime that work to maintain the bulk and function of the brain.” Here’s how: Stay lean. It may seem counterintuitive, but mounting evidence suggests that in order to grow a bigger brain, many of us should be eating less. “The key to the brain maintaining and even regenerating itself is the activation of a set of genes that code for a protein called brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF),” explains Perlmutter.

A Brain-Building Blueprint How to Keep the Mind Young and Memory Sharp by Lisa Marshall

“Have you seen my keys?” “Now, why did I come in here?” “Her name is on the tip of my tongue.” If you catch yourself uttering such phrases, listen up:

“M

emory generally starts to decline in our 30s, as the brain shrinks with age. One of the first and most prominent signs is that ‘tip of the tongue’ phenomenon,” advises neuroscientist Sandra Aamodt, Ph.D., co-author of Welcome to Your Brain. Studies show that the adult brain can shrink as much as one-half to 1 percent annually in midlife, as neurons in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus wither and the branches between them thin. Add hormonal changes, which can starve gray matter of nour-

ishing estrogen and progesterone; less-than-stellar cardiovascular health, which tends to limit blood flow to the brain; and a gummy protein called amyloid plaque, which can hamper neuronal function; and cognitive decline may be exacerbated. Already, one in five people older than 65 suffer from “mild cognitive impairment” (persistent memory problems severe enough to be noticeable by others). According to the Alzheimer’s Association, if we live to age 90, as many as half of us could ultimately be diagnosed with that disease. MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com

“BDNF is significantly enhanced in people that simply cut down their calorie consumption.” Several animal and human studies support this conclusion. One 2009 study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, divided 50 men and women age 50 and older into three groups that slashed calorie intake by 20 percent, 30 percent and not at all. After three months, the groups that restricted their calories saw their verbal memory scores jump by more than 20 percent. Perlmutter notes that just being overweight in the prime of life can promote excess inflammation and free radical production—two enemies of a healthy brain. A 2005 study of 10,000 men and women conducted by researchers at Kaiser Permanente found that people that were obese in their early 40s had a 74 percent increased risk of developing dementia later in life. “Just a 25 percent reduc-

tion in calories over one month’s time can have a profound effect on boosting memory,” Perlmutter notes. Eat a brain-building diet. Aside from cutting calories, experts say it’s critical to load up on foods that boost neurogenesis (the development of new brain cells) and stall brain atrophy. Eating more fish (or omega-3 supplements), adding fruits and vegetables and cutting back on refined carbohydrates do just that, advises Dr. Christiane Northrup, obstetrician, gynecologist and author of Women’s Bodies Women’s Wisdom. “The brain is mostly made up of omega-3 fats, and many women, in particular, are lacking them in their diet,” she observes. Perlmutter notes that supplementing one’s intake of omega-3 fatty acid DHA, present in fatty fish and marine algae, has been shown to switch on the genes that jumpstart BDNF production. DHA is also anti-inflammatory and promotes healthy blood flow to the brain. But people shouldn’t wait too long to load up on it. Healthy fats aside, dark-colored fruits such as blackberries, blueberries and plums are all rich with antioxidants, substances known to scavenge cell-damaging free radicals in the brain. Also, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and broccoli sprouts contain a powerful compound called sulforaphane, believed to boost the body’s own production of antioxidants. One famous 2005 study followed 13,388 women over several decades, and found that those that ate the most cruciferous vegetables and leafy greens stayed mentally sharp for far longer than those that ate the least. New research from Rush University, in Chicago, further suggests that a deficiency of B12, found in fish, liver, milk and eggs, may hasten brain shrinkage as previously functioning cells die off. Overloading on refined carbohydrates like white flour, pasta and potatoes carries a similar result. “Elevated blood sugar can destroy the brain,” advises Perlmutter, pointing to a 2005 study in the journal Neurology, which linked accelerated brain shrinkage with elevated blood sugar. Prevent hormonal havoc. Ebbing hormones can also have a measurable

impact on our ability to recall words and follow through on tasks, says Hawaii naturopathic physician Laurie Steelsmith, author of Natural Choices for Women’s Health. Steelsmith notes that estrogen plays a critical role in influencing verbal and spatial memory and fine motor skills and bolstering the blood-brain barrier to keep toxins out. Meanwhile, progesterone acts on the same brain receptors that Valium does, promoting calm and aiding sleep. In the days immediately prior to menstruation, when estrogen and progesterone levels are low, or once women begin to approach menopause and they stay low, the brain feels it. In an ideal world, the adrenal glands kick in to pick up where the ovaries leave off—producing sex hormones. “But women that are stressed out or not nourishing themselves tend to experience adrenal fatigue, so their adrenals are not able to act as a secondary source of hormones,” says Steelsmith. For ovulating women, she recommends taking 100 to 175 milligrams (mg) daily of the herb Rhodiola rosea during the second half of the menstrual cycle to support fatigued adrenal glands and ward off hormone-related brain fog. If the condition occurs only for a few days before a menstrual period, and is accompanied by tender breasts, lack of sleep and heavy monthly bleeding, the problem may be low progesterone. For that, try the herb chaste tree berry during the second half of the menstrual cycle, or consider a

low dose, over-the-counter progesterone cream, says Northrup. For post-menopausal women, she recommends taking up to 50 mg per day of pregnenolone, an adrenal hormone that the body naturally converts into estrogen and progesterone. (While pregnenolone is available over the counter, Steelsmith suggests that women have a naturopath first test their hormone levels in order to determine an appropriate dose.) Or, older men and women experiencing age-related memory loss can try a soy-based nutritional supplement called phosphatidylserine (PS), which is believed to bolster cell-to-cell communication and levels of the memoryboosting neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Exercise mind and body. Aamodt notes that a common cause of cognitive decline is the accumulation of clogged blood vessels in the brain that choke off blood and oxygen. Thus, “Regular exercise is the single most useful thing you can do to maintain your cognitive abilities later in life,” she says. Recent studies by researchers at the University of Illinois and elsewhere have shown that as little as 45 minutes of aerobic exercise, three times per week, may not only stall age-related brain atrophy in the elderly, but even help regenerate parts of the brain that have withered. “There is no medication on the planet that can do that,” says Perlmutter. Brain exercise is helpful, as well. Exposure to new experiences prompts the brain to literally lay down new neuronal networks, becoming stronger. A 2009 Mayo Clinic study found that of 1,300 people ages 70 to 89, those that had regularly engaged in mentally challenging activities in their 50s and 60s (such as playing games, quilting, building model airplanes, or learning a new language or instrument) were 40 percent less likely to suffer memory problems. The key, advise the experts, is not to stick with the same crossword puzzle for years. Instead, try something new. As Steelsmith puts it: “Use it or lose it.” Lisa Marshall is a freelance health writer headquartered near Boulder, CO. Connect at Lisa@LisaAnnMarshall.com.

W When you’re stressed out, you keep chasiing the same old carrot, whatever that may be for you. But when you’re burned m out, you eventually give up the chase. o The hope that you can create a meaningT fful life fizzles and you find yourself sitting iin the ashes of your dreams. In a culture wedded to positive thinkiing, burnout and its first cousin, depresssion, are thought of as disorders in need of a fix. What if instead, we see them o as losses of naïveté, false identities and faulty assumptions that are making way for a more authentic life? What if we viewed burnout as an invitation to come into alignment with a more elegant expression of our gifts, relationships and overall life energy? The late psychologist Herbert Freudenberger, Ph.D., who first popularized the concept in his 1980 book, Burnout: The High Cost of High Achievement, believed the condition is a painful affliction of good people trying to give their very best. He defined it as “the extinction of motivation or incentive, especially where one’s devotion to a MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com

cause or relationship fails to produce the desired results.”

Why do we burn out even when we regularly use selfcare practices? Many people are shocked to learn that even though I’m a positive person, with a regular yoga and meditation practice, as well as healthy eating habits, I have burned out more than once. Ironically, but predictably, I was trying to do and be my best. For me, burnout means that my most loving, creative self goes missing; I contract into the smallest, most negative version of myself, which is not a pretty picture. I find that for many people that intellectualize a great portion of their lives, burnout doesn’t become real until they are not only physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted, but are also in pain. Knowing ourselves and our limitations is essential, because our tendency is to become complacent and think we’re too busy to tend to our well-being,

or else believe we can do even more because we practice self-care. Keep in mind that we can’t solve burnout with the same level of consciousness that created it. We have to catch ourselves in the act of overlooking our true needs, stop, do a selfinquiry that looks at things as they are, and pinpoint what drains our energy, as well as what brings us to life.

How did writing Fried affect you? In order to follow my own advice, I completely changed the way I live. I realized that at age 66, I needed to pay more attention to my physical body. Physical therapy and Pilates floor exercises are now a priority five days a week, as well as yoga, both of which have helped to correct my hip joint problems. For aerobic exercise, I walk fast for 45 minutes at least five days a week. In inclement weather, I ride an indoor bike. Altogether, it averages out to 90 minutes of daily exercise, five days a week. My husband and I switched to a plant-based diet of organic whole foods, so we now set aside more time to plan, shop and cook. We also make more time for family and friends. We still both work, but fewer hours than before. In other words, I do what I can within a framework of love. I choose to do what is important to me—activities that give me life and energy.

What is it about living “in the now” that feels so enlivening? When we live in our heads and intellectualize, we tend to spin negative thoughts that hurt our physical health and sap our energy. By actively focusing on what we are doing in the moment, we can engage our senses, more thoroughly enjoy ourselves and have an awareness of being that is not possible when we are ruminating over past memories or projecting ourselves into daydreams about a far-off future. In such present moments, because we are relaxed and open to our inner wisdom, as well as our interconnection with the exquisite wholeness of life, we feel the most vital and alive.

ANTI-AGING SKIN CARE 101 The goal of youthful and healthy skin goes well beyond creams, lotions or potions being marketed on television or in magazines. Some manufacturers spend more on advertising & packaging than the quality or amount of active ingredients they claim the product has. Also, skin care products often contain harmful ingredients which saboHEATHER EVANS tage the positive effects they might have had without them. Licensed Medical Esthetician Anti-aging skin care is an important facet of an overall healthy aging program and it begins at home; it starts with a non-toxic, quality, pharmaceutical-grade product line, containing a high concentration of effective ingredients. For extra maintenance and correction, further follow up with a non-invasive treatment plan is needed. If your skin is left without any rejuvenating stimulus, it will not keep replacing collagen & elastin lost over the years, nor will it regain its once-pliable shape. This is the foundation of keeping our skin healthy and looking good. Research shows that certain non-invasive procedures and active ingredients stimulate collagen and elastin growth. One of those non-invasive procedures is Microdermabrasion, a form of mechanical exfoliation. It utilizes a vacuum with an ablation of either micro crystals or a diamond-tip implement and removes the top dull layer, letting newer skin underneath shine through. This treatment is useful in reducing sun damage, pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, blemishes, and coarse textured skin. Microdermabrasion also causes a “repair” response to the skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production. “Chemical” Peels cause the same repair response, utilizing solutions derived from natural sources such as sugar cane, apples, grapes, milk, and enzymatic exfoliates that come from papaya and pineapple. an eating a whole-wheat peanut butter cracker or sipping tart cherry juice help us sleep? Either is certainly worth a try, because most of us aren’t getting enough shut-eye. According to the nonprofit National Sleep Foundation, 64 percent of America’s adults frequently experience sleep problems; nearly half wake up at least once during the night. This deficit of restorative rest can affect our health. “Lack of sleep can affect the immune system,” says Dr. Timothy Morgenthaler, of the Mayo Clinic Sleep Disorders Center and an officer of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. “Studies show that people that don’t get a good night’s sleep or don’t get enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus, such as the common cold.”

A concept called sleep hygiene refers to good health practices that promote sleep. For example: Is the room dark or quiet enough? Is the mattress comfortable? Have we allowed sufficient time to wind down after daily activities to become relaxed? What we eat or drink also can have a profound effect on getting a good night’s rest.

Sleep Sappers Physicians, naturopaths and nutritionists generally agree that these key factors delay or disrupt sleep. Food and drink. According to Jamie Corroon, a naturopathic physician with Seattle’s Bastyr University, eating or drinking

Sleep Aids What helps us sleep may be either a food’s chemical properties or the psychological and physical comfort we associate with a certain food or drink. Options include some old reliables. Walnuts and tart cherry juice. Studies conducted by the University of Texas Health Science Center, in San Antonio, and published in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that these two foods are great sources of melatonin, a natural hormone that helps regulate sleep cycles. Tart cherry juice was found to be especially effective in reducing the time it took subjects to fall asleep.

Herbs. According to the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Maryland, in Baltimore, some herbs have a mild, sedative effect. Three traditional herbs used for sleep are valerian, German chamomile and passionflower. The European practice of sipping a warm tisane, or herbal tea, made from these ingredients can be warming and soothing, preparing us to sleep. These herbs are also available as supplements. Complex carbohydrates. “Enjoy a bedtime snack,” recommends Bauer, of about 200 calories or less; mainly complex carbohydrates, with a touch of protein, such as some banana with

peanut butter, yogurt or a small amount of whole grain cereal with skim milk. “By combining an ample dose of carbohydrates together with a small amount of protein—such as yogurt or turkey— containing the amino acid tryptophan, your brain produces serotonin, known as a calming hormone.” A warm, milky drink. Research scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology concluded that the chemical properties of milk—mainly protein and tryptophan—were not enough to ensure a good night’s sleep (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition). However, sleep and wellness expert Anna de

Vena, who writes for SleepWellFeelGreat.com, observes, “I love curling up with any kind of warm milky drink before bed, especially in the wintertime. There is a calming association with warm milk and sleep… from the time we were infants, when we drank milk and went to sleep.”
