ou may think that this special June issue on Balanced Man and Healing Addictions has nothing to do with you. While a substance addiction (anything from alcohol to food) might not be part of your experience, some other addiction might be, such as anger, attention, victimhood or guilt. Every single one of us has developed patterns in our lives to avoid hurt and self-soothe; as Cory Volpani says on page 18, “Starting from childhood, human beings can become addicted to avoiding painful feelings. It is a natural, conditioned, primal, survival instinct.” Everyone can benefit from the wise words in this June issue, if not for yourself, then perhaps someone you know who is hurting. Growing up with a family lineage that included alcoholism and addictions, Doug has a deep background in this area: Forty years involvement in 12-step programs; Two years in a ‘behavior modification’ program as a teen; sold pharmaceuticals to addiction doctors; extensive research into brain chemistry and genetics; ad nauseam! Beginning in 1956, alcoholism became classified as a disease and in recent years, addiction included, has become commonly accepted by most medical associations. As a mental, physical and spiritual disease, perhaps no single approach works best. It’s been our experience that the recipe for failure and relapse is unwillingness and a closed mind. These spiritual principles (Willingness and an Open Mind), together with Honesty, are the cornerstones to healing addiction, as well as to creating a life of Joy, Happiness and Beauty for anyone of any background. It’s no mistake that so many workshops/seminars/ classes (Shamanic, Zig Ziglar, Landmark, LCA Project, etc.) focus on healing past hurts, releasing resentments, making amends, being of service, and non-resistance. These practices can lead anyone to true Happiness, as well as recovery, because they minimize Ego and increase Love in our lives. We can either increase Love in our day to day lives, or destroy Love. We increase Love by Accepting and Appreciating; we destroy love by blaming, resenting and resisting. Moving your life forward no matter what takes tremendous courage, from walking into your first AA meeting to being brutally honest with a therapist. If we can be Honest, Open-Minded and Willing, healing and recovery can be had for anyone.

Rocky Mountain High Hanne Lore Koehler A self-taught artist who has been painting since childhood, Hanne Lore Koehler often roams her town of Cambridge, Ontario, and the surrounding countryside in search of inspiration. Koehler takes photos that capture moods of ephemeral light and elusive moments of action that she later expresses on canvas. Although Koehler often works in acrylics and oils, she chose to portray Rocky Mountain High in watercolor. Her paintings in this medium are characterized by a wet-onwet background, which the blurring effect transitions to a more definable foreground, and by detailed brushwork. The technique creates a feeling of depth, while engaging the viewer’s imagination. “My subjects are as varied as my interests, but they always exude my love of life,” says Koehler, noting that her art typically engenders emotions of happiness, excitement, contentment and amazement. “I try to satisfy the eye with form, the mind with purpose and the soul with imagination.” View the artist’s portfolio at KoehlerArt. com or contact her at 519-740-0318 or Info@KoehlerArt.com. natural awakenings

The Holistic Value of Drug-Free, Natural Solutions for Health Allopathic Diagnostic Tools H A re you looking for natural ways to: support your hormones; break your sugar or tobacco addiction; sleep soundly; reduce migraines, allergies and pain? The Bio Energy Patch was developed as a complementary therapy to support and restore the body’s energetic function. Made from a specialized biofeedback material designed for NASA to line space suits, it is embedded with organic carbon metallized fragments to hold and transfer radio frequency to interact with the Central Nervous System. Once the patches are applied, the central nervous system recognizes the frequencies it needs. The combination of material and sub-harmonic bio frequencies have been proven to show positive results in balancing the human body via “sympathetic nerve resonance.” Similar to how a CD is programmed with information, once placed in the player, it brings forth your favorite music. Says Dr. Richard Parlee, Pharmacist and Chiropractor, “Our office has been using the patch technology for six years with outstanding results. At first I was a little skeptical, but within the first week of implementing these therapy patches in our practice, we were getting results and our patients were coming back with a renewed sense of hope for their particular issues. I was amazed! Patients find the patches easy to use and report zero negative side effects. Don’t underestimate their effectiveness just because you don’t understand it.” Call Kathy and Rick Eaton at BioTech, 303-8187645, to learn about the right patch for you. See ad page 6.
olistic health practitioners must know the nature of a patient’s problem before they can design a protocol to address it. Advocates of natural medicine tend to disagree with the conventional medical community, but it is important to remember that although their methods may be different, traditional tools of investigation can still be valuable to holistic practitioners. “While there are some good natural diagnostic tools to determine a problem’s origin, sometimes the tools of allopathic medicine are simply superior. Ultrasound, MRI, blood tests and pathogen screening can all be of enormous value when considering how to heal a condition of damage or sickness,” says Nature’s Rite Founder Steven Frank. “If someone is bleeding internally, knowing the source—ulcer, tumor, hemorrhoids or liver disease—is of paramount importance. All of these have dramatically different treatment protocols. When a patient’s energy is low, knowing their blood work and pathogen load is of tremendous value towards designing a healing program.” While allopathic medicine may seek to poison, cut or irradiate the problem, natural medicine professionals may choose the appropriate combination of herbs, acupuncture, qigong or other natural products and modalities. “Having the knowledge of exactly what is damaged and then using the techniques that we know are most suited for healing this condition is what collaborative medicine is all about,” explains Frank. “In our quest to bring natural medicine to the community, we don’t have to shun the diagnostic benefits of the high-technology hospitals. We can use their tools to accentuate our skills.” For more information, email SteveF@NaturesRiteRemedies.com or MyNaturesRite.com/blog. See ad page 12.

Stroke Risk Rises with Two Drinks a Day N
PROTECT
ew research published in the American Heart Association’s journal Stroke has determined that drinking two alcoholic beverages per day during middle-age years increases the risk of stroke more than other known factors, including high blood pressure and diabetes. The study followed 11,644 twins from Sweden for 43 years, starting between 1967 and 1970. All began the trial when they were under the age of 60. The scientists compared the effects of having less than half a drink—classified as four and two ounces of wine for a man and a woman, respectively—daily to drinking two or more daily. The study found that consuming two drinks per day increased the risk of stroke by 34 percent compared to drinking less than half a drink per day. Those that downed two or more drinks a day during their 50s and 60s had strokes an average of five years younger than light drinkers. The increase in stroke risk was found to be higher than the danger generally posed by diabetes and hypertension.
Get Reconnected E
very health challenge is a combination of the physical, mental, spiritual and emotional; we simply classify it according to its dominant characteristic. Healing comes in the form of: disappearance of physical symptoms and diseases such as cancer, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, depression; the release of fear or anxiety; greater insight and clarity; improved relationships; or a sense of peace, bliss and overall well-being. One form of healing is Reconnective Healing which doesn’t specifically ‘treat’ anything but uses an accelerated exchange of energy, light and information. It is focused to connect three systems; the ley lines of our planet, the meridian lines of the human body and the universal energy grid. These frequencies bring you into balance at a profound level, so that healing can occur. The practitioner does not direct the healing and does not need to know what is ‘wrong’. The practitioner’s job is to simply get out of the way, be present with these powerful frequencies, and to allow the person to receive the fullness of what is accessible to them. Everyone’s experience is unique. It is also a process where you are permanently attuned to these frequencies empowering you to: pursue your life path; open to new possibilities and abilities; and fulfill your purpose. If you wish to move forward in your life with a stronger connection to self, your life path, and to the Universe, then a Reconnection is a process and experience for you to consider. Mary Beth Kennedy is a Reconnection Practitioner and can be reached at 303589-8006. See listing page 28.

Acupuncture Treats Prostate Enlargement
R
esearch from China has found that a combination of acupuncture and moxibustion, a form of heat therapy in which dried plant materials are burned on or near the surface of the skin to warm and invigorate the inner flow of qi, or energy, can effectively reduce the symptoms of benign prostate enlargement. Researchers tested 128 patients with prostate enlargement for three months, dividing them into two groups. One group was given acupuncture and moxibustion; the other took a traditional Chinese herbal medication for prostate enlargement called Qianliekangi. The patients’ prostate symptoms were tested using the International Prostate Symptom Score, maximum urine flow rate and residual urine tests. At the study’s end, the patients given the acupuncture/moxibustion treatment reported significantly reduced levels in all three tests—calculated at an 89 percent total effective rate—compared to the herbal medication group.

What are the benefits of laser dentistry? By Scott Stewart, DDS
M
odern dentistry utilizes more than the traditional drill to remove decay and restore teeth. The advanced technology of a laser has many benefits including: Less pain and discomfort; reduced need for anesthetics (and needles); faster healing; less bleeding; more precise treatment; minimize invasiveness; and better diagnosis of areas of decay. Some laser devices include: • The DIAGNOdent™ is used to diagnose areas of tooth decay that may not be visible to the naked eye, allowing early detection, filling and repair. • Ezlase is a non-surgical alternative to traditional gum disease treatment and can be used for aesthetic correction of the gum line, such as reducing a “gummy smile” and re-contouring the appearance of the gum tissue. • Waterlase™ allows routine dental procedures to be done with more comfort. It uses water, energy and air to thoroughly clean and address specific concerns in the smile. Patients can avoid anesthetics. We believe a pleasant, nonstressful dental appointment is what every patient deserves. Look More Masculine
W
omen are attracted to a powerful, fit-looking guy. In business and among his buddies, a man has more clout when he looks vital, chiseled and firm; including his face. Many think of Botox and facelifts, but these remedies produce short-term results and the aging process continues. Continued use or touchups may lead to a ‘distorted’ look. Men are typically more likely to eschew needles, surgery and foreign substances. But a good facial exercise program is affordable and can be done anywhere, anytime resulting in a handsome, youthful look. Men’s skin, on average, is 25% thicker with a higher collagen and oil content than women. It breaks down more slowly, leaving men with less fine lines, wrinkles or dull, dry skin. When they do age, however, it seems to happen all at once. They wake up one day with crinkly, baggy eyes, deep lines in the face, and drooping jowls. Face and neck muscles respond to exercise just like any other muscle. A consistent exercise program can lift saggy eyelids, define a chiseled jaw line and iron out deep wrinkles. Developing facial muscles directly impacts the definition and structure of the face by increasing circulation and stimulating collagen, bone and connective tissue to tighten the skin. Men do care how well they age and facial exercises can play an important role in aging gracefully, with strength and vigor. Grace Mosgeller, Licensed Esthetician, massage therapist and developer of Facefitnez, can be reached at FaceFitnez@gmail.com. See ad page 8.
Relief for Trauma, Anxiety and Addictions T
he psychological pain of trauma, anxiety, addictions and phobias can be devastating to one’s ability to function and enjoy life. These conditions are hard to treat, but a recent innovation called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), has been used by two million people with real success. Developed by Francine Shapiro, EMDR is a therapeutic technique that extensive research and clinical testing have shown to be effective in treating trauma and its symptoms (depression, anxiety, addictions). “Our brains are wired for healing,” says Kathy Higgins, MS, MA, LPC, LAC of Deer Creek Counseling in Littleton, “and that means that in a safe therapeutic setting, with a trained counselor, EMDR can activate healing and bring relief.” Trauma can upset brain functions, such as cognition and memory, while also triggering negative physical responses. EMDR activates the brain’s own natural functions in order to “reprocess” traumatic memories and render them harmless. The technique itself is simple: visual, audio or tactile stimuli provides bilateral stimulation while memories are being reprocessed and neutralized. The emotional charge of the memory is discharged and allows it to be stored in the brain like any non-traumatizing memory. According to Robin Shapiro in EMDR Solutions(2005), “the moments when transformation occurs: the trauma fades from frightening reality to mere memory; the need to distract from life with substances or dissociation changes to the will to get on with living fully; or the chronic, unbearable pain disappears.” Kathy Higgins, certified EMDR therapist can be reached at 720-663-7702. Plastics Ping-Pong
New Technology Makes Windows Power Producers
China Reverses Its Recycling Policy
SolarWindow Technologies, Inc.
SolarWindow Technologies’ new window coatings are a “first of its kind” technology that could turn the buildings we live and work in into self-sufficient, mini power stations. They can generate electricity on see-through glass and flexible plastics with colored tints popular in skyscraper glass. The coating can be applied to all four sides of tall buildings, generating electricity using natural and artificial light conditions and even shaded areas. Its organic materials are so ideal for low-cost, high-output manufacturing that the technology is already part of 42 product patent applications. When applied to windows on towers, it’s expected to generate up to 50 times the power of conventional rooftop solar systems while delivering 15 times the environmental benefits. For example, a single SolarWindow installation can avoid the amount of carbon emissions produced by vehicles driving about 2.75 million miles per year, compared to 180,000 miles for conventional rooftop systems.
Plastic items we carefully separate from the rest of the trash and put in a distinct container may have a dubious fate, according to environmental watchdog Quartz. U.S. recycling companies have largely stayed away from accepting plastic, and most of it has been shipped to China, where it can be processed more cheaply. But China has announced a new Green Fence policy (Tinyurl. com/ChinaGreenFence), prohibiting importation of much of the plastic for recycling that it once received. Plastic categories #3 through #7 (shampoo bottles to butter tubs) may go into domestic landfills again until a solution is found, says David Kaplan, CEO of Maine Plastics, a post-industrial recycler. China controls a large portion of the recycling market, importing about 70 percent of the world’s 500 million tons of electronic waste and 12 million tons of plastic waste each year. These Chinese policy changes will put pressure on Western countries to reconsider their reliance on this formerly cost-effective practice of exporting waste and the necessity for increasing their domestic recycling infrastructure.

Shamanism Supports Your Well-Being By Terry Chriswell
Y
ou’ve likely seen many types of healing modalities in Natural Awakenings, but one of the coolest I’ve ever experienced is a shamanic session. Most people think they have an idea of what a shaman is, and that’s usually an American Indian or indigenous culture, ‘medicine man.’ However, a shaman’s role over tens of thousands years is to act on behalf of his/her community conducting ceremonial rituals, healing people, interpreting the spiritual world, and helping to guide others on the healing – or shamanic – path. Shamanism focuses on a connection to nature, Mother Earth and promotes the well-being of all creation. BJ Brown of Wolfheals Shamanic Services in Boulder explains, “Shamanism is rooted in working directly with the Spiritual realm, summoning the helping, compassionate spirits that
surround us, including the wisdom of the Earth and our natural environment. Shamanic practices can offer clarity, healing and support for a myriad of issues, such as illness, chronic misfortune, trauma, unwanted repeating patterns and depression to name a few. The work supports the client in developing their own spiritual power, to deepen their connection to Self at levels of heart, soul and spirit, difficult to reach through traditional Western counseling.” Prior to my shamanic session with BJ, she journeyed for me; that is, she ventured into the spirit world to see
what messages I needed to hear and what method she would use to help guide me. She shared messages which were right on target, and I was surprised and thrilled to hear she would be sharing a pipe ceremony. In my first shamanic session many years ago, BJ told me about working with my power animal; this time part of the message was, “I got that you are needing to call on this helper more than you are. Part of my service to you today is sort of revitalizing this for you.” BJ helped me with a rock divination, which clarifies a question about my life by looking for messages in a rock of my choosing, seeing a pattern and citing the first thing I sensed. She brought my power animal into focus so I might feel a deeper connection, and then we did the amazing pipe ceremony, with blessings each time the pipe was passed. I felt extremely honored and it was undoubtedly one of the most sacred things I have ever done, afterwards feeling incredibly peaceful and connected for days. Contact BJ Brown for your shamanic session at 303-808-4006 or email bjbrown11@comcast.net. See listing page 30.

“You can’t suffer enough to heal the past.” – Randy Ferguson
H
ow many people do you know are living a life of ‘just getting by?’ Maybe it’s you. Even though we know we are spiritual beings having a human experience, we often get tied down to what we see every day: traffic, bills, can’t wait ‘til the weekend. We forget about love unless it’s triggered by children, kindness or animals. We forget to have fun because we’re too busy being productive. We forget how much more there is to life. We forget that feeding our soul is just as important, if not more so, than feeding our bodies. Deep down, even if we don’t even know it, we believe we’re not good enough, worthless, or not worth loving. We take action so that we don’t get hurt and build walls so high no one can see who we truly are.
I lived that way for a long time until we started Natural Awakenings. Then I moved on to my intention of being an author, and won a fabulous book contract in 2013. Yet, I was frozen, facing significant fear while writing my book. I’m just not good enough, I told myself repeatedly, and this beat me down until I realized something had to change or I’d never have the life I dreamed of living or express the purpose of my soul I knew I had within me.
Enter Randy Ferguson of The Love, Courage and Achievement Project(LCA). I signed up for his 7-week course after a free 90-minute coaching session that taught me more about myself than I’d heard in ten years. The purpose of the LCA is to “help us grow in our consciousness, clean up our lives and manifest the dreams of our heart in a way that makes a positive difference in the world.” And we certainly did a lot of that over the first weekend; my group cleared old wounds, resentments, guilt, fear, attachments, self-judgment and more, with tools that were incredibly easy to understand and take with you. In the profound healing that occurred, we created a bond of integrity and trust where “strangers are as family and loneliness can’t hide,” as Kate Wolf says in her beautiful song “Give Yourself to Love.” If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, look for angels or try mine in a free 90-minute session. Isn’t your magnificence worth fighting for? Schedule your free 90-minute session with Randy at 303-989-2605. LCAProject.com.

The Gut-Mind Connection David Perlmutter on How Stomach Microflora Affect Brain Health by Linda Sechrist
D
r. David Perlmutter, a board-certified neurologist and recipient of the Linus Pauling Award for his innovative approaches to addressing neurological disorders, has recently released Brain Maker, the latest in a series of books on brain health. This medical advisor to the Dr. Oz Show demonstrates how brain problems can be prevented by adopting lifestyle changes that nurture the bacteria living in the digestive system.
Why did you begin your book with the quote, “Death begins in the colon,” rather than “Brain health begins in the gut”? I wanted to draw attention to the real life-or-death issues mediated by what goes on inside the gut. Individuals with an immediate concern for their heart, bones, immune system or brain must recognize that the health of these parts and functions are governed at the level of commensal gut bacteria, the normal microflora that eat what we eat. This relationship is the most powerful leverage point we have for maintaining health.
How were you led to expand from studying the nervous system and brain to investigating gastrointestinal medicine?

Early on in my career, I was taught that everything that goes on in the brain stays there. But leading-edge research now reveals that seemingly disparate organs are in close communication, regulating each other’s health. As scientific literature began supporting the notion that gut-related issues MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com
have a huge bearing on brain health, and specifically on brain disease, it became important to me to be able to leverage deep knowledge of this empowering information in terms of being able to treat brain disorders.
What is the Human Microbiome Project (HMP)? HMP, launched in 2008 by the National Institutes of Health, is a $115 million exploration of the gut microbiome. In the ongoing research project involving genetic and DNA assessment, researchers are looking at the microbiome array in the gut of individuals suffering from various diseases. They are drawing correlations between emerging patterns in the abnormalities of gut bacteria and specific diseases. For example, autism correlates with an overabundance of the Clostridia species. In diabetes, there are more Firmicutes than Bacteroidetes, which we also see in obesity characteristic of the Western cosmopolitan diet. This is paving the way for interventions designed to restore a normal balance of gut bacteria. An example in my book is Dr. Max Nieuwdorp’s research at the University of Amsterdam, in which he discovered an array of abnormal bacteria that characterize Type 2 diabetes. In the more than 250 individuals diagnosed with diabetes that he treated in a double-blind study, he was able to reverse the disease by inserting a series of fecal material transfers from healthy, lean donors into diabetic patients.
What is the most eye-opening information about the roles played by gut organisms? More than 100 trillion bacteria live in our gut. Plus, there are viruses, yeast species and protozoa. When we factor in their genetic material, it means that an astonishing 99 percent of the DNA in our body is bacterial. It’s humbling to realize they influence all manner of physiology, from our immune system to our metabolism, making vitamins, maintaining the gut lining and controlling inflammation, the key mechanism involved in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis and any number of brain degenerative disorders. They also exert influence over the expression of our 23,000 genes, in effect regulating the expression of the human genome. The latest startling discovery—which is so new that it’s not in the book—is that bacterial DNA sequences have now been found in the human genome, meaning we are partly bacterial. It reveals the most sophisticated symbiotic and intimate relationship at the deepest level imaginable. It turns the previous way of thinking about who we are upside-down. Our perceptions of the world, moods, hunger or satiety, even our metabolism, are dictated by gut bacteria, which deserve careful stewarding. They don’t deserve, for example, to be bombarded by the capricious use of antibiotics whenever we have the sniffles.
How can we reestablish good gut health? Better food choices bring about significant changes in our body’s microbiome. By incorporating prebiotic foods such as Jerusalem artichokes, dandelion greens, garlic, leeks, onions, jicama or Mexican yam, as well as fermented foods such as kimchi, kombucha tea, yogurt and kefir, individuals can reestablish good gut health that helps them gain control over inflammation, the cornerstone of all degenerative conditions. Inflammation originates in the gut. Balancing bacteria and reducing intestinal permeability, which allows substances to leak through the lining of the small intestine into the bloodstream, can reduce it. RETHINKING RECOVERY Holistic Approaches to Healing Addictions by Lisa Marshall
T
hrough 15 years of alcohol and prescription drug addiction, one prominent Virginia business owner tried it all to get clean: three inpatient rehab centers; talk therapy (spending roughly $200,000); Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). “I would follow through for about a year, and then start to feel like I was on top of things and get complacent,” says the 52-year-old, who asked that her name not be used. She’d treat herself to “just one drink” and soon find herself in a familiar downward spiral. She last relapsed in October 2012. Three months later, she was on the interstate in the morning, a half-empty fourpack of mini wine bottles on her front seat, when she swerved and slammed head-on into a semi-trailer truck. She escaped her flattened car with minor head trauma, gratitude that her children didn’t have to “bury their drunk mother,” and a renewed will to sober up and rediscover happiness. Today, she’s done just that, thanks to a comprehensive, holistic approach that included hiring a life coach that specializes in addiction, overhauling her diet, making time for daily physical and spiritual exercises and reframing her addiction, not as a disease she is cursed with, but as a predisposition she has the power to keep at bay.

“Yes. I was passed a gene by my alcoholic father. Yet that only becomes a threat to me when I make a choice to ingest something that cuts the beast loose,” she says. “I work hard every day, using a whole bunch of different tools to keep that from happening again.” She is one of a growing number of alcoholics and addicts reaching beyond the standard trifecta of 28-day rehabs, 12-step programs and psychotherapy toward an approach that addresses mind, body and spirit. More than 40 million Americans over the age of 12 (16 percent of the population) are addicted to alcohol or drugs, according to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at New York City’s Columbia University. Yet the standard treatments yield less-thanstellar success rates. Sixty percent of addicts return to drug use within a year after rehab, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and only 5 percent of AA attendees continue with meetings after 12 months, according to AA research. David Essel, a Fort Myers, Florida, life coach who specializes in working with substance abusers, says that when examining all the data, only about one in 10 addicts or alcoholics that use conventional means alone are still clean after one year. Fortunately, because MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com
people vary widely in emotional needs and physiologies, other complementary options are also catching on.
Mending Brain and Body Enter a group meeting for recovering addicts or alcoholics and chances are there will be a pot of black coffee, plus donuts or cookies. “Having poor eating habits is a primary contributing factor to relapse,” says Registered Dietitian David Wiss, founder of NutritionInRecovery.com, which provides nutrition consulting for recovery programs in Los Angeles. Because substance abuse can deaden appetite and many of the same neurological circuits that drugs and alcohol stimulate are also activated by salty or sugar-laden foods, newly recovering addicts tend to be ravenous and drawn to junk food. “After 30 days in treatment, people can gain 10 to 30 pounds. They often turn back to addictive substances they’ve abused to get their appetite back under control,” says Wiss. (Because smoking deadens taste buds, drawing people to seek out more intense salty or sugary flavors, it exacerbates the problem.) In a subconscious attempt to get maximum stimulation of now-neglected reward centers in the brain, users often eat little most of the day, then binge later, leading to erratic blood sugar levels that can impact mood, further sabotaging recovery. After years of abuse, addicts also tend to suffer deficiencies of proteins and good fats—key building blocks of a healthy brain. “The brain has been rewired due to the use of substances. Without healing it, you can attend all the meetings in the world and you’ll still struggle with cravings,” reports Essel. He starts new clients with 500 milligrams (mg) daily of the dietary supplement DLphenylalanine, an amino acid precursor to feel-good neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine. He also gives them tyrosine, an energizing amino acid said to quell sugar cravings. For relieving a craving in progress, he recommends 500 to 1,000 mg of glutamine, placed under the tongue. Wiss says he generally recommends food over supplements, yet asking newly recovering addicts to also revamp their diets can be tough. “I wouldn’t

expect anyone to make a big nutritional change in their first week of sobriety,” he says. After that, he encourages small steps: Drink eight glasses of water per day. Eat three meals and three snacks to keep blood sugar stable. Load up on fiber, which can help heal the gut and replenish it with healthy bacteria. Eat plenty of lean protein to promote production of feel-good brain chemicals. Load up on nuts, seeds, fatty fish and other omega-3 fatty acids that suppress inflammation in the brain and have been shown in some studies to quell depression. Daily exercise is also key as Wiss notes that it “circulates our blood and gets all those healthy nutrients into our brain.” Physical activities can also help fill the void and even provide a new sense of identity for someone whose selfesteem has been shattered, says Scott Strode, founder of Denver, Colorado’s Phoenix Multisport, which hosts group cycling, running and climbing outings for recovering addicts and alcoholics. Strode kicked his own cocaine habit 18 years ago by immersing himself first in boxing, then climbing and triathlons. He founded Phoenix in 2007 to help fill what he sees as a gaping hole in recovery support services—a place where people with similar pasts can gather and talk without dwelling exclusively on their dependence issues. He has since served 15,000 people in Colorado, California, and Boston, offering 60 free outings a week for anyone at least 48 hours sober. “By being part of something like this, you can let go of the shame of being the addict, the junkie or the one that let down the family. Now you are the climber or the mountain biker,” says Strode. He stresses that Phoenix

programs aren’t intended to replace treatment. Still, “For some, just that redefining of self may be enough. For others, it’s a powerful tool in a broader toolbox.”
Beyond AA Co-founded in 1935 by an alcoholic named Bill Wilson, Alcoholics Anonymous now has 2 million members and has played an important role in many successful recoveries. However, its God-based approach (five of the 12 steps refer to God or Him), a credo that alcoholics must admit “powerlessness” and its emphasis on alcoholism as a defining disease aren’t for everyone. Naysayers point to a 2006 finding by the nonprofit Cochrane Collaboration that states, “No experimental studies unequivocally demonstrated the effectiveness of AA or 12-step approaches for reducing alcohol dependence or problems.” Such concerns have prompted some alternative recovery fellowships, including Moderation Management (Moderation.org), which helps people that want to drink less; and Smart Recovery (SmartRecovery.org), which supports an ethos of self-empowerment via cognitive behavioral therapy, nutritional changes and group discussions. Other programs focus on renewing the soul by applying metaphysical practices to the traditional 12 steps. “The conventional 12 steps talk about a higher power outside of you,” says Ester Nicholson, a singer, author and addictions counselor. In her book Soul Recovery: 12 Keys to Healing Addiction, she describes a descent into crack cocaine addiction beginning in her teens, and the long climb out of it. At first, she says, the 12 steps helped her break free of what she calls the

“spiritual malady, mental obsession and physical allergy,” that is addiction. But after a decade of being clean, followed by a near-relapse, she discovered meditation and other spiritual practices. “I realized that this higher power can restore me to sanity, but the higher power is actually within me. I found this wonderful bridge between the 12 steps and universal spiritual principals, and it is rocking my world.” Patti Lacey, 54, an Essel client, likewise found lasting sobriety by extending her toolbox, learning to focus not only on past pain, but on bringing forth her best self. According to the International Coach Federation, which reports an uptick in interest in recovery coaching, a coach helps to establish individual goals and map a journey to success. Two years into recovery, Lacey still takes her supplements daily, rises at dawn to meditate, attends 12-step meetings and is part of a nondenominational church community. She also regularly meets with her coach to report progress and update goals, including getting a handle on her finances, a frequent casualty of addiction. “Everybody’s journey is different,” Lacey confirms. “What I needed was someone to tell me exactly what to do in the beginning, and then be around to hold me accountable. That changed everything.” Lisa Marshall is a freelance health writer in Boulder, CO. Connect at LisaAnnMarshall.com.

THE PATH TO RECOVERY… “takes us within ourselves and leads to the parts of us that have been hurt, wounded, and live in pain.” By Coly Vulpiani
W
e may think that addictive behaviors begin as we get older, but what I have seen is that childhood trauma or emotional loss is the source of addictions and all addictions are about self-soothing. Recovery is about healing the self in us that has experienced the trauma or loss that we are trying to ‘soothe’ with our addictive behaviors. Starting from childhood, human beings can become addicted to avoiding painful feelings. It is a natural, conditioned, primal, survival instinct. And many of us have become all too familiar with the habitual processes and behaviors we now use to avoid feeling that pain. However, those behaviors do not heal our pain, they simply help us ‘manage’ it when it comes around. I define ‘addiction’ as any process used to move away from or deny an intolerable reality. These ‘processes’ are not limited to substance abuse alone. They include: addictive thoughts
18
Denver/Boulder Mile High Edition
“The key to the recovery process is about learning how to heal the wounded parts of us we use avoidant behaviors to deny, or substances to self-medicate (soothe).” we may have about ourselves (we are ‘not good enough’); over-achieving; a constant need to stay busy (workaholism); procrastination; self-sabotage; constant judgment of others or criticism of ourselves; and the denial or strong resistance to allowing ourselves to experience feelings of vulnerability. So, what does it mean to ‘recover?’ What is it that needs to be ‘recovered?’ Most of us think of recovery as ‘getting sober,’ which of course is the desired result; however, in my view recovery goes beyond controlling our addictive behaviors to the deep healing of our emotional and spiritual (Soul) bodies. One of the definitions of recovery is “to
MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com
regain something that was lost.” The path to recovery leads us within to the parts of us wounded by childhood traumas, which are still in pain and have been lost in the shadows of our daily lives. It is a fundamental shift in consciousness which produces the outer effect of healing. As Einstein said, “We cannot solve our problems with the same consciousness we used to create them.” So we need to develop an aspect of our (Divine) consciousness that is willing to embrace what our human consciousness has rejected. To free ourselves from addictive behaviors and for complete healing to occur, it is necessary to go to the birthplace of the problem; to bring the light of our awareness to the unseen causes of addiction. If we are willing to embrace those parts, we will heal our pain, reduce our suffering and reduce the need to use self-soothing behaviors. From this perspective we begin to see that ‘getting sober’ is not simply about controlling our behaviors, it must include healing the parts of us that experienced childhood trauma. As you travel the path to recovery, keep this ancient wisdom teaching from the Gospel of Thomas in mind: “If you bring out what’s inside you, what you bring out will save you. If you don’t bring out what is inside you, what you don’t bring out will destroy you.” For more information about Parallel Realities Practice and to schedule a complimentary consultation with Coly, please call 303-476-8402 or coly@parallelrealitiespractice.com

Men’s Health
FINDING OUR WAY TO HOPE
by Wu Dang Daoist Priest Yun Xiang Tseng (Chen)

umans have reincarnated for over 5,000 years, with man descending from his male ancestors, bringing forth their DNA code of wisdom, health and spiritual energy. Man’s body is yang, but his eyes are yin. His eyes, the entrance of the soul, are often influenced by temptations of the material world. At birth, man’s spirit rises to the head leading to ego and ambition. Ego and ambition deplete a man’s health, leading to premature aging and disease. Ancient Daoist philosophy and science have an explanation and solution for keeping youthful and healthy. Daoists view man’s body as a factory containing many machines (organs) and needing electricity (Qi) to power them efficiently. When man has a strong ego and ambition, then all of his organs must fully function, placing more demand upon the kidneys to supply qi. When the kidneys are overburdened by unrelenting ego and ambition, qi is reduced or blocked leading to fatigue and aging. Signs of kidney deficiency include: low bone density, hair loss, premature graying, tinnitus, libido decrease, memory loss, and a slowing circulatory system yielding a feeling of “cold” and “slowness” with less motivation and passion for life. Without Qi support, the metabolism system slows and men have problems with the gastrointestinal system causing irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes and obesity. Qi is like a bonding agent to human cells protecting them from the quick turn-around that leads to aging. Therefore, it is important that man learn to improve the quantity and quality of his qi by strengthening his kidneys. Daoism teaches an exercise system that focuses on boosting kidney function via Dao Yin (Chinese yoga), Tai Chi and Qigong. An herbal diet nourishes the kidneys and balances the organs. Daoist meditation teaches man how to: slow the mind and return to simplicity; go inward to replenish the Kidney qi; unite body and spirit to promote inner strength. Weakening ambition and ego, man will find harmony with his own spirit, preserve more qi and tune up every organ, yielding more passion in his life. A Daoist teaching is to “Do less with higher quality and yield high productivity in life.” Man must be thrifty with his qi, especially with his sexual energy. It is optimal to find a most harmonious way to communicate with a partner. Another way to increase qi is to increase alkaline foods in the diet to promote better immunity and stamina. It is wise for man to weaken his ambitions and detach from the world of five senses. When man is at peace with his own spirit, he will find more energy within and have a much better quality of life. ately, during presentations about the importance of reconnecting to nature, I see a greater awakening to the issue of human sustainability on Earth. But, there is a focus on “saving the Earth” vs. “saving ourselves and our existence with the Earth.” This sense that nature is separate from us reflects a precarious disconnect. Sometimes it’s hard to be hopeful, so I suggest that hope is something we do. This beautiful blue planet has been around for billions of years and will be here when humans are gone. Will the human race choose to survive and thrive with the Earth? If we could adopt the belief that “What we do to the Earth we do to ourselves,” and vice versa, could we bring about a healing imperative for ourselves and our beloved planet? We can start by simply engendering and being hope. Deep ecologist Joanna Macy’s latest book called Active Hope offers an approach known as ‘Work That Reconnects’ to promote the symbiotic healing relationship we have with nature and Earth. Macy describes a ‘Spiral of Hope’ that revitalizes, heals and fortifies one’s spirit with active hope and energy for pursuing the work of reconnecting to, and healing, the planet. The spiral begins with gratitude. Write, verbalize, paint, pray and express your gratitude to all around you in every possible way every day. Gratitude is contagious – spread it and watch the inner and outer shifts you experience. Next on the spiral is ‘Acknowledging Our Pain’ without wallowing in victimhood. Yes, ‘bad’ things happen and it hurts. But our grief reflects our capacity for love; fear is offset by our trust; anger comes from holding the fire of passion; helplessness is countered by recognizing our personal capacity to do so much. Gratitude and the resiliency gained by understanding our pain, move us on the spiral to ‘Seeing with New Eyes’, or gaining new perspectives. Coaching tools can help, and awareness, mindfulness and intention are also key to reframing, reviewing and transforming patterns and thoughts that no longer serve us or humanity. With gratitude, resiliency, and perspective as our foundation, we ‘Go Forth’ in alignment – reconnected and positive. By healing ourselves, we heal the planet and contribute to the evolution of human consciousness. We live embodied, active hope. Contact Susie Kincade of Women’s Empowerment Workshop at 970-328-5472. VACCINES TRUTHS AND MYTHS: PART 1 By Dr Katia Meier
U
nscientific, emotion-laden outbursts and blatant, profitdriven lies blur the lines between vaccine truths and myths in the media. Fortunately, the population is waking up by taking research into their own hands. Many doctors just regurgitate what they’ve been spoon-fed in pharmaceutical-sponsored medical schools. Many doctors and educated people come to learn the truth about vaccines when a life event forces them to do so. As a doctor and a mother, I am sharing the results of my personal vaccine truthfinding mission. When I entered medical school, my physician mother shared alternative literature about vaccines – which I was reluctant to look at. She insisted that I learn more than what I was taught in medical school and residency, where I was told to adhere to the current “standard of care” without question. The growing, sick feeling in my gut became harder to ignore as I witnessed strapped-down, infant boys being circumcised without anesthesia (screaming in pain) and myself giving multiple vaccines at well-child checkups without knowing what risks or benefits they may hold for this child. As I approached motherhood myself, I conducted my own research into vaccines. I was shocked to learn that the ‘conventional wisdom’ I was taught was not based on well-supported scientific evidence and sound research. Medical safety studies were insufficient
20
Denver/Boulder Mile High Edition
or nonexistent. Med school was teaching assumptions and doctrines as fact.
Illusion of Disappearing Disease According to Dr. Susanne Humphrey in Dissolving Illusions, vaccines have been credited with the eliminating diseases, but the data does not support this. The decline of many infectious diseases preceded the introduction of vaccines – sometimes by decades. By the time the measles vaccine was introduced in 1963, measles had already declined to its current prevalence 20 years prior. The true reasons for the decline in infectious diseases were better living conditions, like running water, less crowding and an increased priority on hygiene.1 It is illogical to think these diseases would increase without vaccines.
Advisory Board’s Integrity Patients and doctors want to believe that the agencies created to advise, research and guide us in decisions of choosing health options for ourselves and our children are doing just that; unfortunately these agencies’ alliances are not with patient’s health but with their own profits from the drugs and vaccines they are supposed to regulate. Scientific studies, manipulated in favor of profits, throw the principle of “First, do no harm” out the window. The pharmaceutical industry is the biggest defrauder of the federal government under the False Claims Act. Over the past five years, they have MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com
been fined $19.2 billion for attempts to bring ineffective and malfunctioning products on the market – including vaccines. 2 The controversial Measles Mumps Rubella vaccine (MMR), which was found in court several times to cause autism3,4,5, has come under new scrutiny as its manufacturer, Merck, is now facing two lawsuits for deliberately falsifying study outcomes to make the vaccine look effective when actual outcomes suggest otherwise.6 According to Barbara Loe Fisher, the president of the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC), “On Aug. 27, 2014 a senior scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) publicly admitted that he and other CDC officials, including the current CDC’s Director of Immunization Safety, published a study about MMR vaccine safety in 2004 that ‘omitted statistically significant information’ and ‘did not follow the final study protocol.’7 Congress declared vaccines to be “unavoidably unsafe” creating the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act in 1986, which does nothing to protect children but shields the vaccine manufacturers from liability for any damage caused by their vaccines. In 2011 The U.S. Supreme Court ruled again that vaccines are “unavoidably unsafe.”10 The National Vaccine Compensation Fund(NVCP) was created to compensate vaccine-damaged children from taxpayer funds, rather than vaccine manufacturers’ profits. It has paid out over $3.1 billion to severely vaccinedamaged patients from 1998 to 2015 with at least 1,943 cases still pending.8 Further, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons estimates only 10% of vaccine adverse reactions are reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), and the real numbers are much higher.9 To be preemptively exonerated from any liability does not give the manufacturing industry any incentive to try to produce safe and effective vaccines. Since no one can hold them accountable, is it any surprise that they are not? The measles’s vaccine alone has caused 98 deaths in the US since 2003 while the actual measles disease has caused none.11,12 According to a study that investigated the VAERS database
from 1990 to 2010, “Our findings show a positive correlation between the number of vaccine doses administered and the percentage of hospitalizations and deaths.”13,14 Another study finds that most adverse drug reactions are related to vaccines.15 Between 1963 and 1999, millions of healthy children got infected with the oral live polio vaccine causing paralysis and death in many.16,17 The flu shot, notorious for its ineffectiveness, is completely experimental. It is never tested for efficacy nor safety
before it goes on the market. The CDC admits that the last year’s flu vaccine was again a failure, providing efficacy in up to 60% of patients, with other experts estimating efficacy as low as 0-7 %.18,19 Further, studies show the flu shot interferes with healthy immune response in children by hampering T-cell immunity20 and actually increases the risk for respiratory virus infections.21 While the flu shot has limited benefit, it may actually promote the disease it pretends to protect against. The flu shot
was related to an increased influenza outbreak during the influenza pandemic between 2008 and 2009. 22 The HPV vaccine, truly unnecessary, has caused thousands of severe adverse reactions, paralysis and deaths. Cervical cancer is preventable in other ways that are less harmful and more effective. I am sure that the popular Gardasil slogan: “one less” was not meant to mean one less girl … but in reality this vaccine seems to do a much better job of destroying girls lives than preventing cervical cancer.23,24,25,26,27 In our practice, we strive to create a welcoming environment where everyone can feel heard, accepted and cared for no matter where they stand on the topic of vaccines. We provide resources for further education and help our patients make truly informed decisions about their own and their children’s health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 7.5 percent of all sexually experienced men under 45, or more than 4 million, have consulted a fertility doctor, suggesting it’s a serious problem among younger men. “Both erectile dysfunction and infertility reflect elements of lifestyle choices, especially obesity, smoking and exposure to environmental toxins,” says Naturopath James Occhiogrosso, of Fort Myers, Florida, author of Your Prostate, Your Libido, Your Life: A Guide to Causes and Natural Solutions for Prostate Problems and ProstateHealthNaturally.com. He says there are many ways to address low testosterone, a factor in both issues, and a healthy diet is crucial for healthy sexual function in both men and women. Some foods can help, while others can hinder a man’s sexual vitality, advises Craig Cooper, of Newport Beach, California, founder of the CooperativeHealth network of men’s health webMileHighNaturalAwakenings.com
sites and author of Your New Prime: 30 Days to Better Sex, Eternal Strength, and a Kick Ass Life After 40. He identifies key no-nos that decrease testosterone as eating excess sugar, drinking excessive alcohol and being sedentary. Here are the best foods for increasing testosterone. Shrimp: Like fatty fish, this tiny crustacean is one of nature’s few food sources of vitamin D, which Harvard School of Public Health research confirms is linked to testosterone levels. Four ounces of shrimp contain 162 IU (international units), about 40 percent of recommended daily intake. Oysters, red meat and pumpkin seeds: All of these are rich sources of zinc, which Cooper notes has a direct link to higher testosterone levels. He cautions, however, that too much zinc can cause its absorption to diminish. Men need 11 milligrams (mg) of zinc a day. Oysters are considered a food of love for a reason: One shelled oyster contains 12.8 mg of zinc. Pumpkin seeds are zinc powerhouses with 7 mg in 3.5 ounces. By comparison, 3 ounces of beef liver or
dark chicken meat deliver 4.3 mg and 2.4 mg, respectively. Lean, grass-fed beef, tuna and nuts: These are high-quality sources of omega-3 fatty acids. “Without obtaining at least 20 percent of our daily calories from fat (no less than 15 percent) we can’t function at optimum capacity, as hormones are produced through the components of dietary fats, including the sex hormones like testosterone,” advises Virginia Beach, Virginia, Registered Dietitian Jim White, a spokesman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “A diet high in carbohydrates and too much dietary fat— more than 35 percent—will cause a gain in body fat, which can decrease testosterone levels. Balance is the key.” Broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage: Cruciferous vegetables are rich sources of indole-3-carbinol, which helps both balance testosterone and estrogen, and neutralize excess estrogen in men and women, says Occhiogrosso. Yes, men have estrogen, too, just less than women, and too much blocks testosterone production. Red grapes: This whole food is a good source of resveratrol and proanythocyanidin, which block harmful estrogen production, says White. Excess estrogen production spurred by eating foods like soy and flax and the growth hormones contained in big agriculture’s meat and dairy products lowers testosterone production in men.
Strawberries: Due to their cortisollowering vitamin C, all berries help reduce stress, including when hormones are released during a heavy workout that can hamper testosterone production. One study published in the International Journal of Sports Medicine confirms that more cortisol equals less testosterone; another in the World Journal of Men’s Health shows that high cortisol lowers sex drive and results in delayed ejaculation. Plus, two Brazilian studies showed animals with the highest vitamin C intake had the highest sperm counts among study subjects. Another good cortisol fighter is the allicin in garlic. Pomegranates: Occhiogrosso likes pomegranates for building testosterone levels. An impressive study from the International Journal of Impotence Research showed that the performance of 47 percent of the impotent male study participants improved after consuming a daily glass of pomegranate juice for four weeks. “Food is always the first choice when I’m treating men with testosterone and fertility issues,” says Occhiogrosso. “It’s often effective without the dangers of testosterone injections.” Kathleen Barnes is the author of numerous health books, including Food Is Medicine: 101 Prescriptions from the Garden. PERSONAL HORMONE PROFILE
H
ealth counselor James Occhiogrosso says it’s essential to know a man’s entire hormone profile, not just testosterone levels, to understand the best way to treat problems. A hormone panel should include blood and/or saliva tests of the following: 4 Testosterone 4 Free testosterone 4 SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) 4 Progesterone and estradiol (hormones not only present in women) 4 DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), a precursor, or foundational hormone, that produces both estrogen and testosterone
