“I believe that the very purpose of our life is to seek happiness. That is clear. Whether one believes in religion or not, whether one believes in this religion or that religion, we are all seeking something better in life. H

appiness is a topic that is near and dear to all of us, evident from the mounds of excellent editorial we received this month. From energy workers weighing in, to counselors and coaches, you will find pearls of wisdom in every page. If you believe His Holiness the Dalai Lama (the spiritual leader of Tibet and committed “to the promotion of basic human values or secular ethics in the interest of human happiness,” according to his website), most certainly we are meant to SEEK happiness – a verb of the highest priority. Why is the challenge of seeking happiness so important? When you actively seek a happier life, you are living more consciously, focused and co-creating positive change. You are inspiring others, and sharing a higher vibration with those around you. You will be astounded at the myriad of people and opportunities that come your way because you are in alignment with the energy of the Universe or God or Spirit or Source, take your pick. You will get closer and closer to living from love rather than ego. It’s appropriate to honor Fathers and Father-figures with this Happiness issue too. Even though we wish we could have fit in more editorial specifically for Dads, we figured you’d get a lot out of it anyway. We dedicate this issue to Doug’s brother Tom, a tough yet infinitely loving Dad whose kids always know they are seen and important. His happiness is unmistakable, because his kids light the way. To read all the great tips in Natural Awakenings this month, and to actually follow a few of them, today, that is the challenge. Don’t let the dust settle on this issue – use it to start living a happier life today.

We wish all Fathers and Father-figures a Happy Father’s Day!

Causes of Autoimmune Disease • GLUTEN INTOLERANCE – Dr. Aristo Vojdani, Cyrex labs’ panel #3 tests for 24 antibodies that your body may produce against gluten, wheat, wheat germ, and others is one of the most thorough. • LOW DIVERSITY OF YOUR GUT MICROBIOME – Research indicates a clear connection with intestinal permeability (leaky gut) and a poor gut bacterial environment (fewer species and poorer diversity). If you have ever taken antibiotics (even just once) your body is potentially at risk here. • HORMONE DEFICIENCIES – Vitamin D, estrogen and testosterone all help to regulate the gut and have powerful immune suppressing effects. Large swings in these hormones during puberty, menopause, pregnancies, or chronic stress increase the chance for developing an autoimmune condition. • SMALL INTESTINAL BACTERIAL OVERGROWTH OR CANDIDIASIS – I find about a 90% rate of infections in my practice - parasites, virus, yeast or bacterial overgrowth. The severity of infections correlates directly with the severity of musculoskeletal inflammation, pain and tissue damage! • MYCOTOXINS – These are toxic substances produced by mold species. Only urine testing can assess if you have been exposed to their toxic components. • PERSISTENT ORGANIC POLLUTANTS – Chemicals like DDT, PCBs and common plastics like BPA and BPH are linked to autoimmune diseases. Thyroid peroxidase antibodies are intimately connected to plastics and anyone with thyroid disease should be careful to minimize exposure. • CHRONIC STRESS AND ADRENAL FATIGUE – Chronic stress changes our microbiome and thins the mucous barrier of the intestines. • MTHFR MUTATIONS (AKA SINGLE NUCLEOTIDE POLYMORPHISMS) – This genetic marker codes for detoxification ability and can be tested through any conventional lab. The MTHFR gene allows us to detoxify toxins such as lead and mercury and the more mutations you have the more requirements you will have for B6, B12 and folic acid so that you can continue to detoxify! • DEPLETED GLUTATHIONE – Glutathione is the powerhouse detoxifying molecule in our body. It is recycled if we consume a diverse and abundant diet – but depleted as our body becomes more toxic or if we have alterations to GSTP1 or GSTM1 genes that code for glutathione. • HEAD TRAUMA – Research confirms that the brain is a target of attack after traumatic brain injury or repetitive concussions. Gene testing of APOe can indicate if you are at higher risk of manifesting brain disease after head injury. Read Dr. Ian Holloman’s blog at RedTailHealth.com. See ad page 3.

Habits of the Happiest People

H

appy people don’t find happiness like you’d find a penny on the ground; they make it happen, with action. Cultivating happiness habits can make a marked difference in your life.

 Be deliberately optimistic. Optimism is imperative to emotional wellness.  Prioritize mindfully. Consistently align choices, intentions and actions with the top priorities of love, happiness and health.  Put yourself first. It’s the best way to bring your A game to everyone else.  Be a prolific seeker. Seek beauty, joy, adventure, pleasure, growth and powerful meaning in all areas of life. Let life move you to possibility, opportunity and gratitude.  Don’t make things personal. Absolutely nothing others say or do is about you, ever.  Examine the worst that can happen. Many of the limitations you’re placing on yourself aren’t real—they’re illusions.  Practice loving-kindness. Making this a habit changes the vibration of your life and the lives of those around you. Plus it feels great. Kristi Ling is the author of “Operation Happiness: The 3-Step Plan to Creating a Life of Lasting Joy, Abundant Energy, and Radical Bliss.” KristiLing.com

E-Cigarettes Produce Free Radicals

E

lectronic cigarette use, or vaping, is on the rise as many consider it a healthier alternative to smoking. However, in a study published in the American Chemical Society journal Chemical Research in Toxicology, researchers from the Penn State University College of Medicine report that ecigarettes produce considerable levels of reactive free radicals created by the high-temperature heating coils that warm up the nicotine solution. Dr. John Richie, a professor at Penn State and senior author of the research, says, “The identification of these radicals in the aerosols means that we can’t just say e-cigarettes are safe because they don’t contain tobacco. They are potentially harmful.” The researchers found that levels of free radicals in ecigarettes are between 100 to 1,000 times less than the levels produced by tobacco cigarettes, still making them a better choice than traditional cigarettes although they still carry risk. Richie explains, “The levels of radicals that we’re seeing are more than what you might get from a heavily air-polluted area, but less than what you might find in cigarette smoke.” Previous research has found that e-cigarette smoke also contains aldehydes that can potentially cause cellular and tissue damage.

Medicinal Mushroom Heals HPV R

esearch from the University of Texas Medical School and Health Science Center has found that a medicinal mushroom extract may be able to eradicate human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted disease. Presented last fall at the 11th International Conference of the Society for Integrative Oncology, in Houston, the clinical study treated 10 women that tested positive for HPV with the mushroom mycelia extract called active hexose correlated compound (AHCC). The patients were given three grams of the AHCC once a day for six months or longer. Eight of them tested negative for HPV after the period, including three that were confirmed HPV-eradicated after stopping the AHCC treatment. The two other patients continued receiving the extract. A phase II clinical trial led by Dr. Judith Smith, a professor at the UT Medical School, will be conducted.

Awe and Wonder Prime Physical Health T

wo related studies from the University of California, Berkeley, suggest that the act of admiring the beauty of nature with awe and wonder can decrease inflammation in the body. More than 200 adults reported their experiences of emotions on a particular day, including amusement, awe, compassion, joy, contentment and pride. Samples of the subjects’ gum and cheek tissues were analyzed for cytokines, and the researchers found those that cited emotions of awe, wonder and amazement had the lowest levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6). UC Berkeley professor and co-author of the research Dacher Keltner, Ph.D., says, “That awe, wonder and beauty promote healthier levels of cytokines suggests that the things we do to experience these emotions—a walk in nature, losing oneself in music, beholding art—have a direct influence upon health and life expectancy.”

Ashwagandha Pumps Up Testosterone

L

ow testosterone levels can be problematic for men as they age. Fortunately, Mother Nature produces her own form of testosterone booster: the herb ashwagandha. Research published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition tested 57 men between the ages of 18 and 50. They were divided into two groups—one was given 300 milligrams of the herbal extract twice a day for eight weeks; the other ingested a placebo for the same period. Both groups underwent supervised muscle training programs for the duration of the study. The men that took the ashwagandha had significantly higher levels of circulating testosterone compared to the placebo group. The ashwagandha group also experienced an increase in muscle mass in the chest and arms, yielding an average arm muscle size of 8.6 centimeters, compared to the placebo group’s 5.3 centimeters. Those men in the ashwagandha group also exhibited faster reductions of creatine kinase, a marker for the type of muscle fiber injury that occurs during strenuous exercise, following workouts.

Amidst the growing pollinator crisis and due to public pressure, Aldi Süd, the German supermarket chain with stores in the U.S., has become the first major European retailer to ban pesticides toxic to bees, including the neonicotinoids imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiamethoxam, from fruits and vegetables produced for their stores. Starting in January, Aldi produce suppliers have had to ensure their cultivation practices exclude eight pesticides identified as toxic to bees. Other retailers in the U.S. and Europe are also beginning to shun bee-toxic pesticides. Home Depot will no longer use the class of pesticides known as neonics on 80 percent of its flowering plants; completing the phase-out in 2018. Lowe’s is ending the sale of products containing neonicotinoid pesticides within 48 months. Smaller retailers are also working on removing neonics and other toxic pesticides from their shelves. The science has become increasingly clear that pesticides, working individually or synergistically, play a critical role in the ongoing decline of honeybees and other pollinators. Bees in the U.S. and Europe have seen unprecedented losses over the last decade, and bee-toxic pesticides like neonicotinoids have consistently been implicated as a major contributing factor. Swedes’ Solution Six-Hour Workday Reaps Benefits Many Americans work 50 hours a week or more because they think they’ll get more done and reap the benefits later. However, according to a metastudy published in The Lancet, people that clock a 55-hour week have a 33 percent greater risk of stroke and 13 percent higher risk of developing coronary heart disease than those that maintain a 35- to 40-hour work week. Data from 25 studies that monitored the health of 600,000 people from the U.S., Europe and Australia for up to 8.5 years were analyzed. Paul Kelley, of Oxford University’s Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute, notes that even a traditional nine-to-five workday is at odds with peoples’ internal body clocks, contributing to sleep deprivation. Now Sweden is moving toward a standard six-hour workday, with some businesses having already implemented the change. Linus Feldt, CEO of Stockholm app developer Filimundus, reports that the shift has maintained productivity while decreasing staff conflicts, because people are happier and better rested. Several Toyota service centers in Gothenburg that switched to a six-hour day 13 years ago also report happier staff, a lower turnover rate and increased ease in enticing new hires. A Swedish retirement home has embarked on a yearlong experiment to compare the costs and benefits of a shorter working day. Source: ScienceAlert.com MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com

ecotip Banish Bugs Safely Keep Winged Visitors Away from Outdoor Events Warding off summertime mosquitoes and flies to maintain outdoor fun is especially important given the new disease potential of the mosquito-borne Zika and West Nile viruses. Here are some naturally protective measures. Remove stale, standing water outside the home—including swimming pool covers, clogged rain gutters and buckets—and turn over clay pots and plastic containers, as they all can be prime mosquito-breeding spots, suggests the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Alternatively, a toxin-free backyard pond or water garden can be stocked with mosquito fish like gambusia that feed on and consume large quantities of insect larvae. Avoid applying potent perfumes, soaps and lotions prior to an outdoor event, because such scents attract insects. It always helps to wear light, long-sleeve shirts and pants to protect more skin. Grow plants with odors mosquitoes don’t like. EarthEasy.com suggests citronella, horsemint (aka bee balm), marigolds, ageratum (floss flowers) and catnip. WellnessMama.com also likes lavender, thyme, lemongrass, anything in the mint family and even basil; rub fresh or dried leaves on the skin or apply lavender flowers or oil, especially on hot spots (neck, underarms or behind ears). Use a non-toxic, plastic-free insect-repelling band for kids. Avoid conventional insect repellents, as many contain diethyltoluamide (DEET), one of the top five contaminants of U.S. waterways. Chemicals rinse off into shower and bath drains during later wash-ups.

Energy Healing & Happiness ROUNDTABLE How Does Energy Healing Contribute to Happiness? JULIE DICKINSON

ANITA DESTINO

Unveiled Miracles

Journey Within

E

nergy Healing contributes to happiness because it connects us to our natural state of being. Our natural state of being is a state of oneness. It is from this place of oneness that we experience high levels of bliss and feel our connection to all things. Energy Healings helps us to consciously connect our personal energy to the energy of the Mother Earth and Father God. Dis-ease occurs when we have lost this connection to our Divine Mother (Earth) and Divine Father (God) and energy healing is what allows us to return to our Source. Energy healing is the bridge that allows us to heal on all levels of our being and return us to our natural state of oneness and happiness. Happiness is simply a state of consciousness within ourselves and if there were a happiness “toolkit” it would include the following: Love, joy, appreciation, gratitude, and compassion. If we are choosing to feel love, joy, appreciation, gratitude and compassion for ourselves and our life, then happiness will soon become our natural state of existence. If you can adopt the belief system that everything is here to help you, then you will soon learn to experience happiness even in unpleasant situations. There is a Hafiz poem that says “Ever since happiness heard your name, it has been running through the streets trying to find you.” Happiness wants to unite with you, there is nothing separating you from happiness except for the barriers you have created against love. Drop your barriers to love and happiness will saturate your body, mind and spirit. See listing page 31. 

hen you receive an Energy Healing, it’s like an energy car wash, you can and will shift how your feel. Whether you pray, meditate or work out, you have the choice to move out energy. The most common excuse I hear is I don’t have time. Trust me when I say it doesn’t have to take that long, you can create a healing practice for yourself just by being conscious about your thoughts for 2 minutes (while you brush your teeth) or 20 minutes (walking the dog). By changing your thoughts you can change your life. Two common things that I notice when I work with people are that we worry about the future, which is not even here yet, or we hold onto things that have happened to us in the past, carrying extra baggage around us. That takes away from living in the moment, being right here right now. If you experience anxiety you are more likely living in the future. When you are reliving or holding onto the past this can cause sadness or depression. I am fortunate to be surrounded with people who are choosing to see the good in the world, letting go of limiting thoughts, negative thoughts and patterns or beliefs that limit their happiness. What type(s) of energy healing do you practice? My main healing practice is connecting with my (or the other persons) Guides MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com

or Angels, Archangels so I can communicate any messages or help remove any energy that is not a person’s highest good. My center, Journey Within, offers a 10-15 energy healing to clear, balance and align your Chakras and release the extra baggage that you are carrying around which causes stress, worry, anxiety, etc. If there were a happiness “toolkit” what do you think should be in it? Do what brings you joy; this will open your heart for Joy and Happiness. Do what you are passionate about; this will open your heart for Love. Not sure what that is? Take some time to think about it, what do you really love to do? Walking in the park, sitting under a tree, hiking, biking, singing in the car, dancing in the kitchen, reading a book, daydreaming or looking up at the stars. MARIE ADAMS Healing Change What type(s) of energy healing do you practice? practice primarily Eden Energy Medicine (EEM) and I combine it with other energy techniques such as energy psychology when needed. I love getting energy sessions from other practitioners and to be able to help my clients feel better with energy work. Both receiving and giving energy sessions helps my energies to get into flow, harmony and balance. That always make me feel great and increases my state of happiness. What aspect(s) of your energy healing practice helps people be happier? In EEM we work with nine different energy systems. One of them is called the Radiant Circuits (RC’s) and when they are activated and balanced you will easily get in touch with your inner joy and happiness. The RC’s can connect you to your soul and the oneness of the Universe. They can instill strength, resilience, vitality and even spontaneous healing in the body. The RC’s are the primary energies activated when you fall in love, feel hope, gratitude and bliss.

If there were a happiness “toolkit” what do you think should be in it? The happiness “toolkit” that I recommend is to activate your RC’s. Here are a few easy ways you can do that: • Smile and laugh as often as you can. Smile at yourself when you see yourself in the mirror. Smile at other people. Watch funny movies. • Dance to rhythmic music and move your arms, hands and hips in figure 8 patterns. • Think of something you are grateful for. Hold both hands over your heart and absorb the feeling of gratitude. Do it 3 times per day. • Bounce on a rebounder if you have one, or just bounce standing on the floor. • Stay grounded! An easy way to ground is to imagine energy chords or energy roots growing down into the Earth from the bottoms of your feet and your root chakra. While you practice this imagery, breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. See listing page 32.  _____________________________

here is a yearning for a more deeply felt sense of Joy that I think most people in our culture experience, perhaps without even knowing. Joy can be felt even where there is unhappiness, grief, loss, transition. Until there is an acceptance and honoring of all emotion that our hearts and brains are built to experience, this yearning for a more fulfilling sense of Joy will hover in the emotional body. What type(s) of energy healing do you practice? I’m a shamanic practitioner and reiki master. I enter into shamanic state of consciousness to follow direct instruction from helping spirits and/or power animals as to what is of greatest

benefit to the client. With the clients’ permission then, I offer healing, divination, soul retrievals and power animal retrievals. I am the conduit. Providing healing work is healing, empowering, replenishing to me. Being of service to my client and students, family and community is a great blessing and honor. It indeed enhances the joy in my life. What aspect(s) of your energy healing practice helps people be happier? Sometimes it is merely that they feel seen and heard that uplifts people. The compassion and presence is vital to the work. It is also that they can feel something more than me is accessible to them and their healing. My clients are encouraged and taught to develop their spiritual autonomy and spiritual power. When they realize they are capacious of Light, Spirit, direct revelation, then they have a more sustainable sense of joy. If there were a happiness “toolkit” what do you think should be in it? Connection - wholehearted contact with friends, community, and one’s self (first and foremost). Sensitive awareness - being attentive to what others may be going through, increasing your sensory acuity, listening more deeply to the inner Self and to nature. And cultivating an abiding honor and acceptance that we are nature, and we belong to the Earth. Do you have a personal “happiness” practice? I’d say my daily practices are what helps me to sustain a basic sense of joy and feeling right as rain, even through times of despair and helplessness at what goes on in the world, well beyond my control. I use essential oils, light candles, pray and smudge every day. I volunteer at prison and do service work on a regular basis. I radiate Light and gratitude for all I have, for the blessings drenched on me from creator, God, and my Spirit Helpers. I sit still. I dance. I thank the Spirit of the Land wherever I am. I tend my garden literally and metaphorically. Ceremony is built into ordinary life daily and seasonally. Sometimes this is a very private, solo practice. I often create ceremony for my community here at home and in other states. See listing page 31. 

ure happiness is our truest state of being. As humans, we make life more complicated and difficult than it actually is. Look at a dog who’s always wagging its tail for no reason. Or a child to giggles just form skipping along stones. Happiness is simple and easy, and when we embrace that, forgetting about being adults, our truest state of being begins to emerge again! People spend more time in the future tasks and duties they have, or in their past pains to truly live in the present state. When we take a moment and really soak in the present moment, people will think about happiness a lot more! What type(s) of energy healing do you practice? I practice clairvoyant, clairsentient, clairgnostic, and intuitive healing. There is no name for it. I simply use what is necessary in the present moment. When I heal others, I get healed, and vice versa. My life has grown abundant in happiness from this healing! Others around me can feel and reciprocate this happiness. What aspect(s) of your energy healing practice helps people be happier? I’m able to remove programs, pains, obsession of the past and future, and replace it with whatever joy, amusement, and happiness I desire. It truly is miraculous. All this also helps me enjoy the present moment which is wonderful! If there were a happiness “toolkit” what do you think should be in it? Simple, present, appreciation, & amusement. HAPPY ALL DAY Simple Daily Practices for a Happier Life by Judith Fertig

T

hroughout the past decade, success researchers and positive psychologists have sketched out in broad strokes the big picture of our elemental yearning for happiness. According to Martin Seligman, Ph.D., and his colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, inner happiness derives from four basic elements: positive emotion, relationships, meaning in life and accomplishment. What we want to know now is how to instill happiness into daily practices. In her latest book, Better Than Before: Mastering The Habits Of Our Everyday Lives, happiness expert Gretchen Rubin fleshes out the needed details. She maintains that the shift into a happier way of being can be as simple as changing our habits, which she terms the invisible architecture of daily life. Rubin found, “We repeat about 40 percent of our behavior almost daily, so our habits shape our existence and our future. If we change our habits, we change our lives.” We can start small in sometimes surprising ways that encourage personal, family, workplace and community well-being.

Simplify—Exercise—Meditate Israeli-born Tal Ben-Shahar, Ph.D., a former Harvard lecturer and author of the bestselling Happier: Learn the

Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment, had 854 students enroll in one of his pioneering classes on happiness in 2006, the highest enrollment for any class at the time. “Students explored ways to apply these ideas to their life experiences and communities,” he says. Today, he lectures and consults worldwide on the science of happiness, or “optimal being and functioning”.

to form a new happiness habit that concurrently reduces stress and increases enlightenment. He starts with what he calls “compassionate attention”; being fully awake or present in our lives without judging what we’re thinking. When we view our thoughts as events in the mind, he says, conscious selfobservation introduces a space between our perceptions and responses, allowing us to view our thoughts as separate from the person we really are. Complementary methods may include breathing techniques or body awareness that help shift us away from anxious, “What if?” speculations into the everpresent now. With just a few minutes of mindfulness a day—the first thing in the morning or at night before retiring—according to Verni, “We can shift our relationship to ourselves and our life experiences in a way that allows for greater spaciousness, acceptance and compassion, and in doing so, can dramatically improve the quality of our lives.”

Daily Joy at Home Another way to improve the quality of our life is to reverse one habit. Shonda Rhimes, creator of TV dramas that include Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, admits that she’s a driven, Type-A person in her new book, Year of Yes. A busy career in Los Angeles, three children

Take the Secret Society of Happy People’s personal happiness inventory at Tinyurl.com/HappinessCheck. Tinyurl.com/DefiningOurHappiness provides an introduction. Ben-Shahar suggests we cultivate three personal habits. The first one is to simplify, saying, “We need to turn off our phones, email and other distractions at home, so we can fully be with the people we care about and that care about us. Time affluence—time to enjoy and appreciate—is a predictor of happiness.” The second is to exercise. “We were not meant to be sedentary,” he says. The third is to meditate. “Meditating helps us to develop extreme resilience to negative emotion.” Ken A.Verni, Psy.D., a clinical psychologist in Highland Park, New Jersey, endorses the importance of a mindfulness habit. In his new book, Happiness the Mindful Way: A Practical Guide, Verni outlines easy, step-by-step actions MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com

and little leisure left her feeling unhappy, so instead of reciting her habitual, “No” to anything extraneous—like parties, eating chocolate chip cookies or spending a lazy afternoon chatting with an old friend—she decided to change that habit to, “Yes.” One of Rhimes’ most profound revelations occurred after she responded positively when her children asked her to play. She observes that kids don’t want that much from us and playtime rarely involves more than 15 minutes; when we give them access and attention, it makes everyone feel good. Rubin agrees that it’s the little things that can contribute to family happiness. As a New York City mother of two, she decided that she’d be happier if she

knew she was creating family memories. She started regularly preparing “special occasion” family breakfasts, a relatively easy meal to customize. She says, “Studies show that family traditions support children’s social development and strengthen family cohesiveness. They provide the connection and predictability that people crave. I know that I enjoy a holiday more when I know exactly what we’re going to do and when we’re going to do it.”

Happiness Habits at Work Dallas happiness researcher Shawn Achor, founder of Goodthink, Inc., and author of The Happiness Advantage, applies the science of happiness to the workplace. His research echoes the personal positivity of Ziemer, Verni and Ben-Shahar’s approaches to nurturing happiness. “Happiness is such an incredible advantage in our lives,” says Achor. “When the human brain is positive, our intelligence rises and we stop diverting resources to think about anxiety.” The Harvard Business Review published his research results: “Creativity triples and productive energy rises by 31 percent. Sales rise by 37 percent and the likelihood of promotion rises by 40 percent.” Achor’s method is helping people rewrite the way they think by first looking for positives at work. Workers write down three highly specific, positive things about their workday for 21 consecutive days. Rather than just, “I love my job,” acknowledge, “I love my job because I get to help people every day.” Or, “I

love my morning tea because it gets me going.” Achor reports that at the end of the period, “Their brain starts to retain a pattern of scanning the world not for the negative, but for the positive first.” Taking a work break for two minutes of mindfulness is also effective. “We did this at Google,” he says. “We had employees take their hands off their keyboards for two minutes a day to go from multitasking to simply focusing on their breathing. This drops their stress levels and raises accuracy rates. It improves levels of happiness and it takes just minutes.”

Happiness in the Community We can foster happiness habits at home, at work and in the community. Rubin suggests starting such a group, akin to a self-help book club or bridge group, but with extra benefits. She even offers a free starter kit for those that want to try it, available via Gretchen Rubin.com/habits/start-a-habits-group. In addition to the happy exchange of ideas and success stories, happiness habits group members also have the benefit of being accountable to each other. Love Your Smile with Cosmetic Dentistry

DENTIST

by Terry Chriswell

Y

our smile is the first thing people notice about you and you want your first impression to look beautiful, healthy and natural! That is the goal of aesthetic dentistry. Cosmetic Dentistry can help you: • look younger • share your smile with confidence • feel better about yourself • have a natural smile that looks real and healthy. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, here are a few options for fixing your smile.

BONDING Tooth bonding is probably most useful for repairing chipped teeth. Bonding materials (high-density, space-age plastics called composite resin) and porcelain are more natural in color and can be designed to perfectly match the surrounding teeth. Bonding is a popular treatment because it provides a successful attachment between the filling material and the tooth’s original enamel and dentin.

WHITENING Most teeth can be whitened (even deeply whitened). The use of custom-made trays to use at home is popular and many people also opt for accelerated or powerbleaching done in the office. Working with a teeth-whitening dentist is more effective than a do-it-yourself approach and is the best way to get your teeth brighter, whiter, and looking younger.

TOOTH-COLORED FILLINGS Dentists no longer need to rely on unsightly metals to replace tooth structure lost to decay. Composite resins and porcelain materials more naturally mimic the look, feel, and function of natural teeth and actually bond directly to the remaining enamel and dentin.

CROWNS A crown basically replaces the entire external portion of the tooth down to the gum level. Dental porcelain can be sculpted to closely replicate the look of natural tooth enamel, while providing desirable strength and resilience. Porcelain crowns are an excellent choice when recreating the form and function of a damaged tooth.

VENEERS Veneers are used to improve the look of

crooked teeth, spaces, discolored teeth, chipped teeth and worn teeth. Whereas a crown is used to maintain the structure beneath a tooth, veneers are less invasive and purely cosmetic. Porcelain veneers are thin pieces of porcelain used to recreate the natural look of teeth, while also providing strength and resilience comparable to natural tooth enamel.

IMPLANTS Dental implants replace the roots of lost teeth. A dental implant–along with a crown built on the implant–replaces a missing tooth or teeth and helps to maintain the bone support of the adjacent teeth, extending their life span.

FIXED BRIDGE A fixed dental bridge is a non-removable prosthesis attached to remaining natural teeth. The false tooth or teeth literally bridge the gap between natural teeth.

DENTURES There have been modern advances in dentures, as there have been in many other areas of dental healthcare, and dentures or overdentures may be an option.

ORTHODONTICS AND ALIGNERS Your dentist now has many options available, from conventional braces to “invisible braces” (clear orthodontic aligners) and reduced treatment times.

PERIODONTAL PLASTIC SURGERY Periodontal plastic surgery is designed to restore form and function to the gum tissue, periodontal ligament, and the bone that supports your teeth or an individual tooth. With today’s techniques and materials, there is almost nothing cosmetic dentistry cannot change or enhance. Crooked teeth, gaps between teeth, discolored or yellow teeth, chipped and broken teeth, missing teeth – all of these issues can be corrected with a well-planned application of cosmetic dentistry. Your dentist will be able to help you with what the changes will look like; what you should expect and if maintenance is required. Talk to your dentist about which option is best for you and which procedures may be covered by insurance.

ere are some examples of gentle practices that nourish body and soul. WALK IN NATURE JUST FOR FUN - Stanford University researchers in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that walks in nature help to reduce negative thinking; supports creative problem solving; improves brainpower; and reduces ADHD in children. SOAK YOUR BODY - Natural salt baths (sea salt, sea salt, or Epsom salt) can reduce muscle pain and

stiffness; improves circulation of lymph; detoxifies; and eases symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. Bath salts are also a great skin conditioner. Add some therapeutic grade essential oils and herbs for a wonderful treat! GET A MASSAGE - It can relieve chronic pain, digestive disorders, symptoms related to menstruation, insomnia, soft tissue injuries, headaches/migraines, stress, depression and anxiety. It can also improve exercise performance, balance, and improve cardiac health.

DANCE IT, BABY - A study led by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine shows that dancing enhances neuroplasticity. And if you dance frequently, you may reduce your chances of getting Alzheimer’s disease by up to 76%. You don’t even have to leave home, crank up that stereo and move it, move it! LET’S GARDEN - Researchers from Bristol University and University College London found that dirt contains minerals that act as antidepressants and immune system regulators. Gardening also relieves stress, supports heart health, and reduces the risk of stroke. It builds dexterity in the hands, supports brain health, and is considered to be exercise. Experiment with your own ideas of what gentle practices fill your cup; your body, mind, and spirit will thank you! 8 Tips for Finding

Happiness By Elisa Medhus, M.D.

W

hat is our number one goal in life? Happiness. Everyone has his or her own personal definition of what happiness looks like. Here are some tips that might challenge your own definition and, hopefully, set you firmly on the path to life’s brass ring. • Remember that happiness comes from within. It’s not something you have to go out and search for. For example, the perfect marriage doesn’t necessarily equate to happiness, nor does wealth, power or good grades. You are your own source of joy. • Sometimes a painful past can derail you on your path to happiness. Being raised by abusive parents certainly made happiness elusive for me during most of my life, but I eventually learned to let go of that chapter from the past. How can you accomplish that? Forgiveness is essential, even forgiveness that is stated within yourself. Search for value in the pain—it may seem impossible but it’s always there—then compassionately embrace it. By taking these two actions, you can disconnect from the suffering the past has caused. For me, the actions of my abusive parents taught me how to be assertive, compassionate, and nurturing. Forgiveness didn’t change the past of abuse, however, it did free me from the bonds of anger in order to move forward. • Learn to be still and present in the Now. Pay attention to your breath and you’ll begin to notice a distance between you and the situation around you. Instead of reacting, that small dis-

tance cultivates awareness, helping you connect and become more mindful to the present with yourself and life.

• My husband always says, “If you want to be happy, lower your expectations.” He’s right - believe it or not, sometimes husbands are. Being free from too many expectations can be liberating, and opens up a lot more room for happiness. • Acknowledge when you are happy instead of trivializing or dismissing your feelings of joy. You can be happy with the gum you’re chewing or with a shirt that really fits you well. For me, happiness is a smile on my seven-yearold granddaughter’s face, the smell of orange blossoms in my backyard, and a

pair of jeans that are comfortable while still reining in my cellulite. From these sweet spots you accept and appreciate that life is comprised of a multitude of these mundane little cups of joy that can refresh your everyday lives and your perspective about life. All it takes is changing your perspective. • Being happy entails knowing and accepting yourself, warts and all. To get to that place of being comfortable in your own skin, you must be emotionally honest with yourself. Recognize, accept and embrace your flaws, knowing that, with an open heart, you can forge them into strengths. • Take care of your emotional needs by identifying your feelings. Slow down and let your emotions rise above what you’re processing logically. In other words, feel first, think second.

• Follow your passion. You won’t meet your emotional needs if you don’t. When you do, you connect with your authentic self and with life itself. In the end, happiness is born from simplicity, surrender, acceptance, and the courage to follow your own heart instead of the words of others. Elisa Medhus retired from medicine after her son Erik’s suicide in 2009 to write and blog about her continuing relationship with him in “My Son and the Afterlife: Conversations from the Other Side.” See ad page 7.

DAD MATTERS

How to be the Father Kids Need by Armin Brott

A

merican fatherhood has evolved considerably in the last 50 years. While dads used to be kept out of the delivery room, today, more than 90 percent of new fathers are present for their children’s birth, reflected in MenCare Advocacy’s State of the Worlds’ Fathers. However, being there early on does not necessarily define the scope of future involvement. Overcoming obstacles that might keep men from being the “high-five” dads they and their family need them to be is key. Involved fathers benefit children. Most research on child development has focused on how mothers influence their children, but in recent decades, society has “discovered” fathers. In many studies, pioneering Psychologist Ross Parke, Ph.D., professor emeritus of University of California, Riverside, and others have conclusively shown that children of more-involved dads are better at solving puzzles, score higher on cognitive skills tests, do better in school, are more likely to go to college, are more empathetic, manage their emotions better, have fewer behavior problems, are less likely to suffer from depression or mental illness and are less likely to break laws or become teen parents. Fathering tip: Never miss an opportunity to change a diaper, play with the kids, read stories together or simply ask them about their day.

Equal workplace policies matter. The U.S. is the only economically advanced country that has no nationally mandated paid maternity leave policy and is absent a national paternity leave policy, paid or unpaid. When men don’t get time off to learn basic parenting skills, it’s harder for them to stay engaged later. In 1977, 41 percent of women and 35 percent of men in dual-earner couples reported work-family life conflicts. Today, the figures are 47 percent and 60 percent, respectively, according to the Families and Work Institute’s ongoing National Study of the Changing Workforce. Parenting tip: Advocate for national, paid parenting leave policies for men and women starting with local employers. It benefits both families and companies. Studies by Stanford University, the Families and Work Institute, Gallup, Inc. and others have found that companies with family-friendly benefits enjoy more loyal employees, better morale, lower turnover, fewer arbitrary sick days, higher levels of customer service and higher shareholder returns—all of which contribute to their bottom line. Both genders can be naturally nurturing. Certainly, women are biologically adapted for giving birth and breastfeeding, but Parke found that caring new dads typically cuddle, coo, giggle, rock and feed their babies just as much as new mothers. One hurdle men MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com

face is that they usually have to return to work sooner, and their natural nurturing skills can get rusty, while moms’ get sharper. Opportunity and practice are the biggest predictors of meaningful connections with children. Fathering tip: Don’t assume that a partner knows more. Whatever a mother knows, she learned by making mistakes, and that’s the best way for fathers to learn, too. Be open to complementary expertise. A dad with a mate that praises and supports him will be far more confident and engaged with his child than one with a partner that criticizes him. Parenting tip: No one likes to feel incompetent, so when offering dad advice, do it in a nonthreatening way that supports and compliments his improving skills over time. It may mean adjusting personal standards a bit. Dad should take pride in practicing his unique rapport with offspring. Instead of letting mom pluck a crying or smelly baby from his arms, he can try, “Honey, I’ve got this.” End-running the legal system after divorce. For some 30 years, the default decision in divorce cases has been to award the mother primary physical custody, with limited visitation for the father. More states are now moving toward a presumption of 50-50 physical custody, but it’s not the norm. Therefore, many divorced dads may feel disconnected from their children and suppressed in their parenting role moving forward. Fathering tip: Never give up. Children need their dad in their life and vice-versa. It’s critical to stay in touch. In person is best; phone, email and Skype are decent fallbacks. Make time together feel meaningful as well as normal, instead of falling into a “Disneyland dad” syndrome of trying to make every moment a party. Practice harmonious communications with the ex. The biggest known predictor of children’s future mental and emotional health is how well their parents get along. Separated parents don’t have to be friends, but they do need to acknowledge both parents’ importance to the children and treat each other respectfully. Armin Brott is the author of eight bestselling books on fatherhood, including The Expectant Father and The New Father. Learn more at MrDad.com.

Ortho-Bionomy: Help for Horses

• Energetic Healing • Chakra Balance • Cellular Repair

I

am asked to work with horses for a number of reasons; the horse just shipped in from another barn, state or country; he fell while playing in the pasture or on the longe or she became cast overnight; more typical lameness or sore back; changes in attitude towards work, and more. Ortho-Bionomy (O-B) uses the proprioceptive system to communicate with the body. Proprioceptive nerves are in and surround every joint, they send messages to the central nervous system telling it where the body is in space and time. Pain, injury or trauma can lessen or numb this awareness. I identify and exaggerate the pattern in a joint, finding the most comfortable position and add a small compression. This engages the proprioceptors. Taking the stress out of the joint evens the tone of the surrounding musculature, creates relaxation and allows the proprioceptors to reset and realign. The nervous system does the work of self-correction and the joint comes into balance. Ortho-Bionomy is a gentle, non-invasive, non-force that re-educates the body by bringing awareness back to the system in order to stimulate change. The re-education happens spontaneously because the nervous system already knows how to help the body heal itself. Ortho-Bionomy is based in osteopathic work where the principle of ‘structure governs function’ is key. Structural imbalance in the body affects all of the systems. For instance an imbalance in the foot bones can create pain in the neck and shoulders, or your horse’s inability to move his rib cage in one direction can negatively affect his digestion. The sessions with horse and rider are collaborative; I work with their bodies not on them. I look at how horse and rider interact, mirror and affect each other. The sessions become part detective work as we peel el back the layers of compensatory patterns to find the cause rather er than just treating the symptoms and each h session is different. When horses move ove to a more balanced system, those se behaviors that are judged through the e anthropomorphic lens of ‘he’s e’s just being bad’ or ‘she’s being g moody’ change. In a more relaxed state, their eyes soften, ften, they become more interested rested in their environment, their true personalities begin to shine through and a deeper per and more rewarding relationship lationship can develop between een horse and rider. Every Day Can Be A Day Without Pain!

Natural Awakenings Topical Pain Relief Plus

A

cute pain from an accident, burn or insect bite may cramp your style at the family picnic, but the kind of pain that recurs every day and every night can make us miss out on the best times of our lives. Lost opportunities like playing with our children and grandchildren, participating in sports and other healthy activities like dancing do not give you a second chance for fun. Natural Awakenings Topical Pain Relief Plus relieves pain, strains and sprains while substantially reducing recovery time.

Unique Ingredients are How it Works Natural Awakenings Topical Pain Relief Plus works by penetrating deep into skin and muscle tissue. Key ingredients include certified, refined emu oil, whole leaf aloe vera, MSM glucosamine and chondroitin, in a proprietary blend of essential oils, Oriental herbs, botanical extracts and complex vitamins/antioxidants. MSM acts as an analgesic and antiinflammator y agent, inhibits muscle spasm and increases blood flow while aloe vera, the only known vegetable source of vitamin B12, Emu oil allows the other ingredients to immediately begin to reduce pain, inflammation and swelling. Emu oil, an allnatural food byproduct that contains high levels of linoleic leic acid, known to relieve arthritic tic pain, is obtained d from the fat off the flightless emu bird, and a series of processes refine, sterilize and deodorize it. But not all emu oil sold is of the quality used in Natural Awakenings Topical Pain Relief Plus; some is simply rendered, using added ingredients that pollute the natural oil. As an added benefit, emu oil increases skin layer thickness by up to 56 percent, decreasing wrinkles and age spots.

Follow the Directions For optimum relief, apply a generous amount of Natural Awakenings Topical Pain Relief Plus directly onto the area of pain or discomfort, allowing it to be absorbed for two to three minutes. Don’t wipe away any that is not absorbed; massage it into the surrounding areas, and use it as often as needed— there are no side effects! Using Natural Awakenings Topical Pain Relief Plus three times daily is ideal—depending on your level of pain—when you wake up, at mid-day or after work and just before bedtime. Regular use will continue to alleviate pain and help keep it from returning as often or as intensely.
