Hi, I’m Steve Frank and I suffered from sleep apnea for years, so I know exactly what you’re going through. I even tried the CPAP machine but I could not sleep with anything strapped to my face. It was a serious problem and I was determined to find an answer. As an herbalist, I diligently pursued a group of herbs that would correct this problem and thank goodness, my persistence paid off! My patent-pending formulation has helped thousands and I use it every night. Now you can try it too! My Mom asked me what to do about persistent leg cramps. She had tried all the suggested supplements but still had problems. I put together a group of herbs to relax nerves, reduce tension and increase circulation. It worked great for her! Later, I found that it works for Restless Legs as well. Now you can use it too.
You owe it to yourself & your spouse to try these great products!

Denver Mile High Edition
O
ver the past eight years, we’ve seen an incredible surge in people becoming entrepreneurs of hope, healing and change desiring to bring new, holistic modalities to complement conventional medicine. These folks are focused on true, vibrant health for their clients, unlike allopathic medicine which is centered on disease management via surgeries and drugs, although it does have its place. The two approaches are as different as night and day. Many people carry tremendous fear about new things, thoughts, or paradigms. They long for the slim comfort of “the way its always been done” or “the way my parents did things.” But we don’t live in the same world as previous generations. As a child in 1950, you would have received seven vaccines before age six. Today, you will receive 36; at least 10 more than any other country. In 1972, there were roughly 500 chemical additives approved for the U.S. food supply; in 1994 there were over 17,500. In 1995 GMOs were introduced into the U.S.; now more than 70 percent of all processed foods contain GMOs. U.S staple crops are mostly genetically modified now: Corn – 88%; Soy – 93%; Cottonseed – 94%; Alfalfa – All?; Papaya – 75%; Canola – 90%; Sugar Beets – 54%. New practices saturate 100% of wheat fields with Roundup (glyphosphate) to increase harvest yields. Animals are treated with hormones and antibiotics while being fed GM corn and alfalfa. Today, it takes more effort, resources and knowledge to eat, breathe and live in a healthy way. Then we get emails like this (on a Monday morning, no less): “Every month I have to throw your stack of publications in the recycle bin. People who represent themselves as holistic medical practitioners are con artists who are responsible for the death of thousands of people each year. People with poor logic skills, and people who are so sick they will try anything, read your publication and give all their money to these con artists and receive nothing in return but false hope. If you had any humanity you would stop your publication all together. Please stop leaving this trash at my store.” That is fear and anger talking – someone has embraced hate-filled propaganda and the ideologies of those that have an agenda to want things to stay the way they have always been. Only the terrified EGO must make others “wrong” to feel good about itself. A great quote comes from Joe Dispenza, “Live out of your imagination, not out of your past.” For us, it means to consider what’s possible rather than what’s familiar. An open, confident, loving mind can stretch to consider new possibilities (round Earth anyone?). Luckily for us, it is YOU, dear reader. And it is YOU whom we do this work for.

U.S. Midlife Women Choosing Natural Health Care In a survey of 171 midlife American women, more than 80 percent reported using complementary and alternative medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine researchers discovered. The most common choice was herbal teas, followed by women’s vitamins, flaxseed, glucosamine and soy supplements. Only 34 percent of the non-Hispanic white women and 14 percent of the Hispanic women discussed it with their doctors.
O
ver the last decade, the medical community has incorporated trauma-informed medical care by testing for Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE). According to the Centers for Disease Control, higher ACE scores increase risk for depression and chronic medical conditions that can cut overall life expectancy. Trauma robs us of our capacity to selfregulate. The autonomic nervous system may either get stuck on high arousal, constricting the musculature, cardiovascular system and viscera; or shift into energy conservation to slow organ systems. It may alternate between both, which is most common in syndromes. Children exposed to ACE are 2.7 times more likely to experience functional somatic conditions (debilitating conditions for which no distinct cause can be determined), such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic pain, and irritable bowel syndrome. A study published in 2015 in the journal Neurology found a correlation between ACE and migraine. These conditions commonly co-exist with anxiety and depression. There may be emotional numbing and a lack of ability to experience pleasure or positive emotions. Self-disturbances may be characterized by a negative self-concept; marked by persistent beliefs about oneself as worthless;
and possibly accompanied by pervasive feelings of shame or guilt. Interpersonal disturbances may include persistent difficulties in sustaining relationships. The somatic presentations of trauma are difficult to reach with traditional cognitive psychotherapy, primarily because they are implicitly embedded in the neurophysiology as mostly non-conscious responses. They are best addressed by a combination of body-based, somatic psychotherapy, healing touch therapies, and restorative yoga. Somatic Experiencing, a form of trauma therapy that guides the client’s attention to interoceptive, kinesthetic and proprioceptive experience, is well-suited to address syndromes. Its style of inner attention, kinesthetic and interoceptive imagery, and the deliberate use of touch to increase the body’s coherent self-regulation, can lead to the resolution of symptoms resulting from chronic and traumatic stress. Inge Sengelmann, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, specializes in the treatment of medical syndromes resulting from early trauma. She is offering 50% off a 90-minute intake assessment for somatic healing to address medical syndromes, chronic pain and illness through May. Contact her at 305-7886857 or see ad page 31.

Acetaminophen Linked to Delayed Language Skills
Girls born to 754 Swedish mothers that used acetaminophen during pregnancy showed less ability in acquiring early language skills at 30 months of age, report Mount Sinai Health System study researchers. If the mothers took acetaminophen more than six times in early pregnancy, their daughters (but not their sons) were nearly six times more likely to have language delays than girls born to mothers that didn’t take the drug. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 65 percent of pregnant women in this country use acetaminophen, which is marketed for pain and fever relief in Tylenol and Exedrin, and included in many overthe-counter formulations such as NyQuil and Robitussin.
A SAFE PLACE FOR CHANGE Your journey begins with the 1st step.
More Tylenol Concerns
A
ccording to Andrew Moore, senior research fellow at the University of Oxford, “when Tylenol (acetaminophen) is used for postoperative pain, perhaps 1 in 4 people benefit; for headache perhaps 1 in 10. This evidence comes from systematic reviews, often of large numbers of good clinical trials. Acetaminophen use is associated with increased rates of death, heart attack, stomach bleeding, and kidney failure. It is known to cause liver failure in overdose, but it also causes liver failure in people taking standard doses for pain relief.” According to the Food and Drug Administration, between 1998-2003, acetaminophen was the leading cause of acute liver failure in the U.S., and almost half of liver failure cases during this period were a result of accidental overdose. Furthermore, the FDA states that, during the 1990s, unintentional acetaminophen overdose was responsible for around 56,000 emergency department visits, 26,000 hospitalizations, and 458 deaths each year. In 2013, the FDA issued a warning that acetaminophen use, in rare cases, can cause a number of potentially fatal skin reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). Medical News Today reported on a study that uncovered a link between prenatal exposure to acetaminophen, autism, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). From an analysis of more than 2,600 pregnancy women, the researchers found that women who used acetaminophen in the first 32 weeks of pregnancy were 30 percent more likely to have offspring with attention impairments at the age of 5, which are often seen in children with autism or ADHD. Additionally, the researchers - including study co-author Jordi Julvez of the Center for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) in Barcelona, Spain - found that boys prenatally exposed to the drug were more likely to have clinical symptoms of autism.

Cryotherapy Aids Recovery
D
id you know that some of the best surgeons are recommending cryotherapy after surgery to their patients? Dr. Michael DeSimone states, “Immersing the body into ice has been shown to reduce inflammation, swelling, bruising, pain, and accelerate surgical recovery as a whole. When the body is cold, it naturally constricts the blood flow, so once the cold temperature is removed oxygenated blood starts to flow to the injured area reducing the complications that come after surgery.” An ice bath requires a 20-minute session, while cryotherapy take only 2-3 minutes. Ice is roughly 32 degrees F, while Cryotherapy typically runs at -220 Degrees F. Cryotherapy is a quicker, more effective option that is also safer for the skin. The whole-body exposure of cryotherapy provides systemic relief by reducing inflammation and pain while increasing endorphins and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Clients also experience positive moods and thinking due to these endorphins. Some opt for localized treatment for a specific injury site or for an effective, refreshing facial. Dr DeSimone recommends one or two sessions of cryotherapy prior to any surgery to reduce inflammation in order to speed post-op recovery. Make sure to follow all surgery protocols from your surgeon and wait until after your first post-operative visit and all drains, sutures and bandages are removed to start your cryotherapy treatments. Cryotherapy can greatly aid a quick recovery from aesthetic or plastic surgeries. “The sooner we cool the inflammation caused by tummy tucks, breast augmentation/reduction, facial implants, body contouring, liposuction, fat grafting, rhinoplasty, hair transplants, botox, microdermabrasion, laser surgery, and skin rejuvenation, the sooner you will look and feel great,” says DeSimone. Castle Rock Cryotherapy offers packages and flexible scheduling in a friendly atmosphere. Tantra Meditation for Natural Healing
N
ature is the ultimate healer, containing the vibration of wholeness that we seek when we undertake any healing. Whether you are physically, emotional, mentally or spiritually under the weather, use this meditation to rejuvenate yourself and come back to a state of peace. 1. Go to a favorite spot in nature – park, trail, creek or lake. 2. Relax. Take a few deep breaths and settle in your environment. 3. Connect with a particular natural feature of the setting — a tree, stone, or view. 4. Allow yourself to connect to the vibration of that feature, until you feel merged with it. Do this for at least 20 minutes. 5. You can do this by sitting silently, or by being more active, for example swimming in the sea or in a lake. New guidelines that change the criteria for healthy blood pressure mean that nearly half of U.S. adults are now considered to have high blood pressure. The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association have redefined the condition as being 130/80 instead of 140/90, a change considered by critics as overly beneficial to pharmaceutical companies. This criteria includes 80 percent of people over 65, triples the diagnosis for men under 45 and doubles it for women younger than 45. The revised guidelines encourage adopting lifestyle strategies in early stages of rising blood pressure like exercise, diet, weight loss and smoking cessation. Evidence-based alternative methods noted in a Canadian study include coenzyme Q10, dark chocolate, qigong, slow breathing, Transcendental Meditation and vitamin D. 10

Helping Hands
Recycled Plastic Transforms into Prosthetics The emerging technology of three-dimensional (3-D) printing can benefit the world in many ways. Re:Purpose for Good, in Australia, creates robotically 3-D printed prosthetic devices from recycled plastic and e-waste. It’s difficult to customize prosthetics, so more invasive surgery is often needed to make standard sizes fit the patient. Other companies produce 3-D printed prosthetic hands and arms, but Re:Purpose for Good customizes both hands and feet at a much lower cost. The company’s robotics and prosthetics engineer Gerardo Montoya, who had been working on 3-D printing prosthetics for children in Mexico, merged the idea with a desire to do something about the 8 million tons of plastic entering the oceans. Along with plastic waste, they also use e-waste such as discarded smartphones that have all the circuitry and microprocessors needed for advanced features. The company even plans to teach their prostheticmaking process to children as part of their science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) curriculum, so they can learn 3-D printing skills. They’re making it open source so more people can get involved without patent restrictions.
Women Warriors
Africans Unite to Save Rhinos The Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit aims not only to protect rhinoceroses in South Africa by patrolling the Balule Nature Reserve, in Greater Kruger National Park, but to also be a role model in their communities. It’s the first majority-female, anti-poaching unit in the country. Founded in 2013 by Transfrontier Africa NPC to protect the Olifants West Region of Balule, the Black Mambas were invited within a year to expand into other regions, and now protect all boundaries of the reserve. These 32 young women and two men want their communities to understand that the benefits are greater through rhino conservation rather than poaching, as they address the local social and moral decay that results from poaching. Their concern is also for their children’s sake because the sham economy has corrupted morals and brought narcotics into their communities. To make a donation, visit BlackMambas.org.
All That Glitters
Sparkly Microbeads Face Ban Scientists have called for glitter to be prohibited due to the threat it poses to wildlife. The glistening, decorative, plastic microbead powder may seem harmless, but environmental researchers report it’s a dangerous pollutant, particularly in oceans. Trisia Farrelly, Ph.D., of New Zealand’s Massey University, notes, “Their diminutive size and sparkling appearance make them appealing to animals, which will eat them.” Seven U.S. states now restrict the use and sale of products with microbeads; California was the first in 2015. The British government will ban rinse-off microbeads—plastics of less than one millimeter in length—found in exfoliating scrubs, shower gels, toothpaste and even on greeting cards. Plastics are found in a third of all fish caught in Great Britain, according to a study by Richard Thompson, Ph.D., professor of marine biology at Plymouth University. He says of shower gel with glitter particles, “That stuff is going to escape down the plughole and potentially enter the environment.”

HEALING THE HARD STUFF Natural Approaches Can Help Resolve Illness by Linda Sechrist
cian Dr. Wendy Warner, medical director of Medicine in Balance. She suggests that relatively few people turn to natural solutions for both preventive and therapeutic measures because they’re unaware they exist. “Yet complementary modalities such as acupuncture, massage and some essential oils can support the immune system and help an individual deal with stress experienced from coping with their illness,” says Warner.
I
n the face of health issues, many gentler modalities described in The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine remain largely ignored because they are unsupported by traditional allopathic medicine. Holistic measures such as naturopathy, acupuncture, energy medicine, essential oils, herbs, detoxification, health-promoting diets, homeopathy, massage, prayer and meditation, supplementation, yoga, and massage are ignored while patients
follow instructions to undergo painful medical procedures and ingest dangerous prescription drugs instead.
Lack of Awareness “A patient that dabbles in holistic medicine for minor health issues such as indigestion, headache or insomnia often turns to conventional methods after receiving a serious diagnosis such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer because they are scared,” observes holistic physi-
Rob Wergin, an experienced energy medicine practitioner speaks from experience regarding clients that consult him for illness diagnoses. “When I see them, they’re desperate and have exhausted all conventional methods. I’m their last-ditch effort,” remarks Wergin. “People find it challenging to put faith in natural methods and are nervous about going against a doctor’s advice until they feel or see positive results; even these may not provide sufficient motivation to continue with alternative treatments,” he says. “I believe this is the result of the influence of pharmaceutical ads promising results, the medical community’s belief in proof solely through clinical trials, websites like Quackwatch.com and wellmeaning friends insisting that the conven-

tional route is the only way to go. It’s sad to see the gravity of these influences pulling clients back into solely believing in the Western model of medicine,” says Wergin. Ann Lee, ND, founder of Health for Life Clinic, Inc., notes, “This mindset continues to get reinforced by insurance companies that do not cover alternatives. Paying out of pocket for medical expenses also influences a patient’s choices.” Kelly Noonan-Gores and Adam Schomer, director and producer, respectively, of the documentary film HEAL, suggest that unconscious conditioning plays the biggest role in an individual’s choices. “We are deeply conditioned to view medical specialists and prestigious medical institutions as the ones with all the answers. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t,” says Noonan-Gores, who intends to have her film awaken viewers to the possibilities of alternative paths of healing. As just one other example noted in the film, thousands have used the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), tapping on their body to help release the trauma and stress often associated with illness.
vestigate integrative and complementary medicine may resist hearing that in order to get well, they might need to change their worldview and lifestyle, take a leave of absence from their job, develop a spiritual practice, exercise or maybe even leave a toxic relationship,” says Schomer. Conventional medicine says take this pill and keep living your life the same way,” says Schomer. “We are not demonizing doctors, pharmaceuticals or the medical system. We simply believe that individuals are more empowered to heal when they take control of their health.” Eva Lee, featured in the documentary Heal, suffers from a rare and unpredictable form of blistering skin inflammation. “I’ve tested negatively for faulty genes and all sorts of rare viruses and bacteria, which helped point me towards holistic methods. So far, following the directives of Dr. Mark Emerson, who I met while filming, has helped my body become healthier as soon as I detoxed and eliminated meat and dairy from my diet,” says Lee. Still, it’s hard for her to accept that her condition could be due to stress and suppressed emotions. “Before, I wasn’t familiar with EFT, which I continue to use and benefit from,” Lee says.

“Outside of any dominant paradigm, it’s easier to cast suspicion than to make curious inquiry and, over time, working within a dominant worldview creates polarity, the
antithesis of “wholism.” An inclusive approach integrates all medical and complementary approaches, as well as interaction with the natural world,” says Patrick Hanaway, a family physician at Family to Family Medicine and former director of medical education for the Institute for Functional Medicine and the first medical director at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. “The paradigm shift we are ushering in has been 50 years in the making,” assesses Hanaway. “Some medical professionals are immersed in a polar view of right and wrong, offering personal attacks and disparaging comments to maintain control of the dialogue. This is not appreciated by patients who look to the doctor as a teacher. The movement to change medicine and the cultural paradigm of healing is a marathon, not a sprint, and those of us involved are prepared to stay the course.” Hanaway explains, “Doctors have a rigorous job filled with responsibility. Change is difficult and investigating vastly different ways of practicing medicine requires a degree of curiosity and openness. I am heartened by thought leaders and heads of top medical schools who are presently opening up to functional medicine, natural medicine, and complementary approaches.” Linda Sechrist is a senior staff writer for Natural Awakenings. Choosing Natural Care First
Local practitioners discuss how different modalities help to ease illness before turning to conventional medicine AROMATHERAPY
BIOFEEDBACK
There are no residual side effects when using Aromatherapy as directed for well-being. Essential oils are multitasking and support many different issues and body systems simultaneously. They work swiftly by going straight to the problem through the skin or inhalation. Aromatherapy is convenient, fun and an affordable way to maintain your health naturally. The yummy aromas are icing on the cake. A dear friend was going through a very intense transition in life – broke up with boyfriend, moved to a different state, moved away from friends, reunited with estranged family, quit a profession of 13 years, and started a new career. She was experiencing sadness, grief, hopelessness, anxiety, insomnia, and weight loss. By using a combination of different essential oils on a daily basis, she was better able to cope while her sleep and weight loss improved.
One alternative approach to addressing allergies is Biofeedback Therapy. Biofeedback therapy can identify stressors that are causing symptoms of environmental allergens including dust and mold, and find tailor-made homeopathic remedies that balance those stressors. Environmental allergies can cause ear infections, fatigue, hyperactivity, the inability to concentrate, joint and muscle pains, and sleeplessness. Alternative treatments for allergy relief complement traditional methods for a more integrative approach. When we treat the body holistically with homeopathic remedies, the immune system becomes aware of any potential threats. Homeopathy helps awaken the body, restore balance, and activate the body’s natural healing abilities. The World Health Organization recognizes homeopathy as “the second largest therapeutic system in use in the world.” The benefits of Biofeedback include: supporting detoxification; improving digestion; calming inflammation; strengthening the immune system; targeting your specific issue; evaluating supplements for value, sensitivity and dosing; alleviating allergies to foods, pollens, chemicals, pets and molds; explores gluten sensitivities; checking organs, toxicities & stress factors as a total body scan; and it is safe, effective and non-invasive.

ENERGY MEDICINE Eden Energy Medicine is a great tool to keep yourself in optimal health. With simple daily practices you can stay emotionally balanced, improve your immune system, and increase your vitality, health and joy. I recommend the Daily Energy Routine which is a 5-10 minute practice that will get many of your energy systems in balance. EEM is a natural method to improve your health with no side effects. It also includes a lot of no cost self-care. With any kind of illness you can always try EEM first, but if you don’t see improvements, please also see a licensed physician or other licensed health care practitioner. EEM works beautifully as a complement to conventional medicine and can help you to heal faster as well as possibly reduce or eliminate the use of any traditional medicines. Donna Eden, who developed these techniques, is the greatest example of how EEM can help you heal (See article page 19). Donna had many serious illnesses when she was young. She’s now 75 years old and radiates joy, love and happiness. She is the most energetic, enthusiastic and inspiring person I’ve ever met! CBD OIL Hemp-derived Cannabidiol oil is a natural supplement that can be part of any daily health routine — not just for illness or disease. According to ProjectCBD.org the endocannabinoid system, via specific CB1 and CB2 receptors, is responsible for balancing the body by effecting pleasure, energy, and well-being; and regulating the function of cells, tissues, glands and organs. Our bodies produce their own cannabinoids but most people are deficient in this production. Plant-based CBD oil, a phytocannabinoid, can supplement that deficiency. Once the ECS is functioning optimally, the body achieves balance. This approach to wellness takes the whole body into consideration. Why aren’t doctors recommending CBD Oil? In 2014, an informal study found that only 13% of doctors were taught about the endocannabinoid system. Doctors don’t recommend options they are uninformed about. Collaborate with your healthcare provider and be prepared to provide information. Ultimately, it is your decision what you choose to put into your body. Adding a full spectrum CBD oil to your daily routine can provide your body with extra cannabinoids to support optimal health. Jenica Watts is a CBD consultant with HempWorx. HERBS Herbs have been used since ancient times for their medicinal properties. They have the same healing qualities as pills or prescriptions, albeit in a more diluted dose. “We want a quick fix,” acknowledges Blake Burger, Denver Botanic Gardens horticulturist, certified herbalist and president of the Denver Medicinal Plant Society. But, unlike conventional medicine, which is prescribed as a response to illness, medicinal plants can be built into daily life to help heal the body, keep it healthy and ward off disease. “It’s a more holistic approach in tune with the whole body.” Herbs are a source of vitamins such as A, C, D and K and minerals like copper, zinc, iron, potassium and magnesium. They’re even a source of protein. Herbs contain flavonoids, plant compounds with antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory benefits; inflammation in the body is the root cause of most diseases. Nutritive herbs, which are rich with vitamins and minerals, are alkalinizing. They counter excess acid in the body caused by a diet of animal products, processed foods, cola, caffeine and alcohol. Adding medicinal plants into your diet doesn’t have to be complicated. Taking daily supplements is fast and easy. Cooking with fresh herbs adds flavor to dishes. “Even drinking a cup of tea can be considered a health practice,” Blake adds. One participant of a tour Blake led at the Gardens approached him with questions about severe menopause symptoms. Her doctors had been unable to find a solution. He suggested a way to use red clover which helps ease hormonal imbalances. A month later, she contacted him to him to say she’d followed his advice and her symptoms had become essentially non-existent. “That incident really stuck with me,” Blake says, “It’s empowering to take healing into your own hands.” Classes on herbs and other health-related topics can be found at Denver Botanic Gardens. INTUITIVE HEALING
NATURE
I am a perfect example of someone who has used Intuitive Healing when conventional medicine failed to heal my own illness. Years ago, feeling fatigued, depressed, with chronic digestive issues, I visited doctor after doctor only to hear repeatedly, “Your tests show you are fine.” I was getting frustrated and feeling desperate. Having given up on conventional medicine to help me, I turned to natural healing: acupuncture, diet, and other modalities, with some success. However, it wasn’t until I found an Intuitive Healer who taught me to ground, and how I could connect with my intuition, and address healing at its root: the energetic level, a level that conventional medicine does not truly recognize, much less understand. I was unconsciously soaking up other people’s emotions and negativity like a sponge and then wondering why I was so tired, depressed and unable to function. In time I was able to not only heal myself, but embrace my “sensitive” wiring so that I now see it as a gift (rather than an encumbrance) that I call upon to help others learn to connect to their own inner wisdom, to self-know and to selfheal. This is our birthright! I regularly have the honor of witnessing others, as they heal their lives physically — from illnesses such as IBS, chronic fatigue and even cancer — as well as emotionally, and spiritually via intuitive healing, just as I did. Comments I typically hear from those I work with is: “WOW. This would have taken years to begin to unravel in traditional therapy!” and “I can’t believe how powerful this.” Yes, truly we are.
When I tell people that I’m a nature-based, empowerment coach they often say, “That’s really cool! Why nature?” Because we are nature. We share DNA with every living thing on this planet. We are earth, air, water and fire – bones, breath, blood and energy. Just like the Earth, our body is an ecosystem that needs to be maintained in order to support the healthy whole. Spending time in nature helps relax our mind, feed our spirit, and calm our emotional body. Today, stress is a primary assailant on our health, even damaging our cellular structure. Simply being in nature releases stress, tunes all our body’s systems, and activates our happy hormones, like serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin. When coaching in nature I witness people change physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The mind aligns with nature’s pace, the Alpha or meditative state. This relaxation allows insights to come in and it increases general curiosity. Clients have space to wonder, to feel connected and part of something bigger. They often feel less alone and vulnerable, and they regain a sense of hope, peace, and direction in life. I’ve also experienced profound physical healing in nature. After a car accident resulting in severe whiplash, I was told I needed surgery, though no bones were broken. Instead, I laid on the ground for hours absorbing the healing energy of the earth. I felt it rising and wrapping me, cocoon-like. I received a clear message: You need 6 weeks to heal. I laid on the earth as much as possible during that time. I got one cranial sacral treatment, and I was back to normal in 5 ½ weeks.

MEDITATION/ENERGETIC HEALING Stress, worry, anxiety or being overwhelmed are the most common issues keeping us from feeling we have well-being. Meditation is a great way to allow your body to relax, to calm down and just “be.” While meditating, your breath helps release any tension whether in your muscles, organs or your mind. It is extremely beneficial for mind, body and soul in a natural way — without unhealthy side effects. When you start a Meditation ritual you will notice: you become more calm and relaxed; you turn the chatter in your mind down for a deeper night’s sleep; you experience more energy throughout the day; and your food will taste richer and flavorful. Through the years working with clients I have recognized that pain is trapped energy that we are holding onto but ready to let go of, like stress, worry or anxiety. Our illnesses are usually caused by an emotional issue that we are holding onto in our bodies. Emotional issues come from multiple sources; your mother’s thoughts and feelings while you were in the womb, childhood memories, sub-conscious beliefs that we created in our lifetime. Our bodies produce energy and that energy creates our Aura Field around us. When our Aura Field is dirty, dingy or filled with worry, stress or anxiety that will create our bodies to feel sluggish, stuck or stagnant. When you receive an Energy Healing, it is a way for your body to connect to a higher vibration which will allow your body to release and let go. Anita Destino is the founder of Journey Within. NEUROENERGETIC RELEASE
ORTHO-BIONOMY
In my opinion medicine is over-specialized; often, no one sees all the connections between parts and systems of our bodies. Neuroenergetic Release® is a unique, whole-istic health system that addresses all of the body. With NER we find one global pattern of imbalance causing musculoskeletal pain, organ dysfunction, digestive problems, migraines, asthma, fatigue, depression and other acute and chronic pain. Often, this core pattern is behind all of one’s symptoms and releasing it is more effective than conventional medicine alone. NER recognizes how all body parts/organs affect each other and are controlled by the nervous system. If bones are out of place, muscles are pulling them that way. If some muscles are weak, and some others are strong or tight, that is the nervous system is telling them to be that way. If you have digestive problems it may have nothing to what you are putting in your mouth. NER uses points that tell the body to rebalance in just seconds. Some muscles become strong, others relax, bones rebalance, symptoms and pain decrease, organs function better and patients shift towards health. This change is observable to the naked eye, measurable, and can be felt by the patient. As NER addresses core causes, most patients improve dramatically in days and weeks. One patient’s experience: “I was treated …for over 20 years for a neck displacement with only short term success. The problem caused heart arrhythmia and rapid pulse. After receiving just a couple NER treatments the symptoms cleared up completely. My pulse rate dropped …to 70’s and has maintained. My posture has improved and exercise … no longer cause(s) discomfort.... sleep apnea has …disappeared since NER. It’s been over a year now and I’m still feeling great!” D.B.
Ortho Bionomy is a wholistic, numerological, structure-based work, that has a unique ability to work in every system of the body. We work closely to help identify and monitor what both practitioner and client are noticing and feeling to give a complete impression of what is happen within your body. Our ability to communicate with every level of the body and listen to the response of the body can be life-changing, and keeps the client noticing all aspects of their healing journey. It can calm injuries down quickly, removed excess swelling and can assist the body in detoxing sideeffects from medications and irritants. It can work with infections or whiplash. I truly believe if we work together to address illness the body is allowed more avenues and options for healing. For instance, I had a client come to me with back pain. I was able to help identify that her kidneys were inflamed and most likely she was on the edge of an infection or illness. We did two sessions in two days and the kidneys calmed down and were able to rebalance with herbs and water and OrthoBionomy. She felt relief after only one session and was completely healed by the following week.

PSYCHOTHERAPY As a counselor I view psychotherapy as a form of natural care for wellbeing. For certain conditions such as depression, insomnia, back pain and some forms of anxiety, evidencedbased psychotherapy treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy are equal to or even outperform more conventional drug therapy. There is absolutely a place for medication as an intervention, and medication is most helpful when a client’s condition is putting important areas of life at serious risk such as being on the verge of losing a job or an important relationship, not eating or sleeping for extended periods of time, being in serious crisis, or when other approaches haven’t worked. In these more critical circumstances, medication can provide a valuable reset and certainly can be a life saver for those dealing with serious mental illness. But for many years now, taking medication has been the first-line approach for many common conditions like the ones listed above. More recently, research is calling this approach into question and for good reason. The process of finding a medication that works well can often be difficult. I’ve had several clients who have tried medication only to discontinue due to uncomfortable and disruptive side effects. Additionally, the emotional roller coaster of being hopeful about a new medication and then disappointed over and over can be demoralizing. The more natural approach of talk therapy allows many clients an effective way to build new skills, feel supported, find new ways of thinking, improve positive neural networks in the brain and understand the physical, psychological, social and spiritual factors that have created their condition. This level of awareness and growth puts much more control for healing and preventing a reoccurrence in their very own hands in a way that medication just cannot. SHAMANISM Shamanism is an ancient, animistic spirituality known to benefit dis-ease on any level while deepening a sense of wholeness and wellbeing. It is an innately holistic approach. Illness from a shamanic perspective is understood as something that is out of alignment on a soul level, or that a part of one’s essence is lost. The shaman, or shamanic practitioner, is instructed by the compassionate helping spirits and in collaboration with the soul of the person receiving healing or guidance. A shamanic approach to illness will empower the client to engage and participate in their own healing and wellness. Yes, the symptoms are addressed, but root sources of illness, chronic illness or misfortune, are tended as well. An experienced shamanic practitioner knows how to become “hollow bone,” setting their own filters aside in order to divine the needed instruction from the helping spirits to give to the client, and to provide the healing work of most benefit to the client in the moment. One client was suffering from a severe mental illness for most of her life and under the care of western psychiatry, but was not improving. After about a year of deep and consistent shamanic healing work, she is free of her struggle. I’ve had numerous clients experience relief, healing, or comfort for acute injury, chronic pain, depression, grief, recurring virus, surgery, or cancer treatments and even life transitions like death, divorce, birth, marriage, etc. It’s most common, however, that my clients have tried other things, western modalities, to address their issues prior to seeing shamanic help, but to no avail. BJ Brown, MSW, CIBP is a Shamanic practitioner and teacher in Boulder. She can be reached at 303-808-4006 or Wolfheals.com. See listing page 30.

Donna Eden
ON WORKING WITH ENERGY
F
by Terry Chriswell
or more than four decades, Donna Eden has been teaching people to direct their energies for health and happiness, developing a system that has come to be known as “Eden Energy Medicine” (EEM). EEM is a simple practice that works with energy as a vital, living, moving force at the foundation of well-being. Since childhood, Donna has been able to clairvoyantly “see” the flow of energy in the body and has helped hundreds of thousands of people live more vitally by activating this natural healing ability, restoring energies that have become weak, disturbed, or out of balance. EEM addresses physical illness, emotional and mental disorders, and promotes high-level wellness, peak performance, and joyful living. Some 1,400 practitioners are certified in EEM, teaching classes and providing healing services around the world, many in mainstream health settings. Donna’s 2008 book, Energy Medicine, is the classic in its field, available in 19 languages and the textbook in hundreds of healing classes.
NA: You started using healing energies because you needed to heal yourself. Tell us more about that.
DE: I had a series of health challenges
as a child, including contracting tuberculous when I was three and multiple sclerosis in my teens. The MS grew worse until my organs were breaking down. I had a heart attack when I was 27 and was told by my late 20s by several doctors that there was nothing more they could do to keep the illness from
progressing, so I needed to get my affairs in order. But I had two daughters by then and I was determined not to leave them. I had the good fortune of being able to figure out how to work with the energies in my body to turn my M.S. around. It took a few years of experimentation and dogged determination, but in the process, I learned a great deal about how to work with the body as an energy system. I then became impassioned to bring what I had learned to others suffering with difficult health challenges. That is how my work began.
NA: What is the difference between EEM and other energy healing modalities like reiki?
DE: While it had never occurred to
me to use it in a healing context until my own do-or-die health crisis, I have
always had the ability to see the energies that surround and move through the body. My mother had that ability, and it seemed quite normal and natural to me. It was only after I was working with other people in a healing context that I began to study other healing systems and I learned that the energies that move up and down the body were called “meridians” by ancient Chinese physicians. The circles of energies that spiral over various parts of the body were called “chakras” in age-old Vedic texts. The energies that surround the body are referred to in various systems, including in Christian writings, as the “aura.” I realized that I was working primarily with nine major energy systems and each had been recognized by one healing or spiritual system or another. Working with an understanding of each of these systems gives a health care practitioner a great advantage in facilitating the healing process, and that is what we teach our practitioners. Another feature of my approach is that I had to figure out a way that people who can’t “see” energy can still work with it effectively. For this, I borrowed muscle-based energy testing from Applied Kinesiology and Touch for Health, and this has become central in how our practitioners assess the body’s energy systems and determine where to work. I think these are the primary distinctions of my approach.
NA: Our feature for May’s Women’s Health issue is “Choose Natural Care First.” Where do you think energy medicine falls when choosing natural care?
DE:
I had the great honor of having Christiane Northrup, M.D. write the foreword to my second book, Energy Medicine for Women. In that foreword, I think she summed up the answer to that question as well as I’ve ever seen it. She said “In the medicine of the future, as I envision it, working with the patient’s energy field will be the first intervention. Surgery will be a last resort. May 2018
19
Drugs will be a last resort. They will still have their place, but shifting the energy patterns that caused the disease will be the first line of treatment. And before that, teaching people how to keep their energies in healthy patterns will be as much a part of physical hygiene as flossing or exercise.”
NA: Speaking of that book, how is energy medicine different for women?
DE: Because women are designed to birth babies, we have
monthly cycles that activate bewildering biochemical processes. We are engineered to grow a new being inside of us and bring it into the world after it has already grown too large to allow that to be done comfortably. We are wired to nurture. All of this needs to be orchestrated, and it is first orchestrated in our energies. Monthly cycles follow energy. Change-of-life stages follow energy. Hormones production follows energy. Emotions follow energy. By working at the level of the body’s energies, we have a fast-track into all of the biological processes behind “I am women, hear me roar.”
NA: What would you say to someone who doesn’t believe in energy because they can’t see it? Someone who only believes in Western medicine?
DE:
More power to you! But observe your world with an open mind. I don’t argue. I demonstrate.

NA: I love your Daily Energy Routine on youtube. com, and I’ve also learned tips from Denver’s local practitioner Marie Adams. Where is the best place to start for someone who has never worked with their energy?
DE:
Push the boundaries of horticulture and redefine your understanding of art and gardens through workshops and lectures.

Pillow Self-Talk Three Questions to Ponder Before Sleeping by Krista O’Reilly Davi-Digui
A
sking ourself three purposeful questions before retiring each night can help us rest content knowing that although we may not have lived our day perfectly, we did live it well.
1
What are three things I am grateful for?
It’s possible to live with eyes and heart wide open to the amazing beauty of each day, to receive it as a gift, rather than a guarantee. By looking, we can find gifts even amid uncertainty, struggle, pain or loss. In those times when we find ourselves fighting for gratitude, know that the grace found in thankfulness for even tiny blessings sustains us and builds resilience to walk through the storm and emerge intact.
Reading One Thousand Gifts, by Ann Voskamp, or A Simple Act of Gratitude, by John Kralik, may help inspire us to get started. With practice, expressing gratitude will come easily, like breathing or laughing with children.
2
What are two things I did well today?
Speaking words of life about ourselves, noticing what we do well and where we shine, may meet internal resistance. It seems second nature, especially for women, to see our own struggles or shortcomings, but not our beauty or all the ways we show up to serve others and use our strengths. Deepening the roots of self-awareness and self-compassion that permit us to ac-
3
What is one thing I would do differently?
Some nights we may find that given the chance, we wouldn’t have done one thing differently that day. More often we can identify something: a word spoken in impatience, spending too much time on the phone, being distracted from what’s important to us, procrastinating out of fear, or even forgetting to properly nourish ourselves. Instead of criticizing, the goal is to notice how we could better live fully aligned to our bigger goals and established values. Moment by moment, we can choose a growth mindset. We can learn to be as gentle with ourselves, as compassionate and forgiving, as we are with our children or spouse. We become aware that we get to choose who and how we want to be and that tomorrow is a new gift, a brandnew opportunity to more fully be our best self. Asking and answering these three purposeful questions may take five to 20 minutes. If we’re tempted to rush through it, remember that the resulting clarity and peace is worth the time invested. ransitioning through menopause and the years of perimenopausal hormone fluctuation leading up to the finale can be physically and emotionally challenging for many women. Consistently following a healthy diet and positive lifestyle are important, and health researchers, doctors and midlife women can attest to the multidimensional benefits of exercise. Perks may include reduction of menopausal discomfort, better brain function, stronger bones and reversal of estrogen dominance syndrome that can set the stage for fibroids, cystic breasts, cancer, migraines and weight gain.
Get Moving
Studies of 3,500 women in South and Central America have shown that a more active life reduces hot flashes and night sweats. The results, published in Menopause, the journal of the North American Menopause Society, reveal that sedentary individuals often experience increased intensity of related symptoms like insomnia and irritability. Aerobic exercise such as regular walking, hiking, swimming or biking might also help the brain produce neurochemicals that are compromised when estrogen levels drop. Sue Markovitch, author and owner of Clear Rock Fitness, in Columbus, Ohio, recommends aerobic exercise. “I believe our bodies were made to move. One of the amazing gifts of fitness is it’s truly never too late. When we incorporate daily movement in our lives, all the other systems in the body will work more according to plan. Simply taking a daily walk helps balance brain chemistry,” says Markovitch, who specializes in improving fitness levels for women over 40. “Walking is fitness magic, whether it’s on a treadmill, outside or in the pool. Get your heart rate into an aerobic zone, preferably for 30 to 45 minutes. I’ve heard testi-
MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com
mony after testimony of improved sleep, less back or joint pain and better mood.” She also suggests adding a few weekly sessions of resistance training to daily walks. Most health professionals agree that balance is the key. Jeanne D. Andrus, a menopause expert and author of I Just Want to Be ME Again, in Covington, Louisiana, recommends cardio, resistance training and exercise that increases flexibility and core strength. “For a beginner, this may include two to four days of walking, one to three days of strength training and one to three days of yoga or Pilates, with the goal being three and a half hours of activity per week.” Of course, all of these need to be at appropriate levels for the woman’s condition and goals,” advises Andrus. According to studies led by Helen Jones, Ph.D., from the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University, UK, three, 30-to-45-minute aerobic sessions a week reduced hot flashes and yielded the most significant results.
Go Easy
While some conventional approaches suggest vigorous exercise, many holistic professionals caution against extremes. “It’s important to individualize, and in my ongoing research it’s clear that the high-intensity strength and sculpting approach so often promoted and perceived as necessary to maintain shape, weight and health is a myth,” says Dr. Eden Fromberg, an obstetrician, gynecologist and founder of Holistic Gynecology New York, in Manhattan. Instead, Fromberg recommends an integrated approach to exercise that supports connective tissue and joints. While some
forms of exercise including yoga are perceived as gentler than others, she warns against an all-or-nothing strategy, noting, “Intense, deep stretching and joint-straining may cause injury more easily during hormonal transition.” Andrus concurs, “If high cortisol levels are involved and accompanied by insomnia, stress placed on the body by rigorous exercise will increase these levels and actually lower available energy.” She also advises adopting a non-aggressive approach for osteoporosis. “Weight-bearing exercise is a must, but if bone loss is already present, start much more gradually to ensure that bones are protected.”
Lighten Up
Exercise can be more enjoyable than doing chores. Recreational activities such as dancing, biking or hopping on the swings at the playground are fun ways to do something good for both body and spirit. Menopause can be a time for personal expansion and an invitation for self-care that might have been neglected or postponed. Fromberg believes we can all revitalize our resources at any stage of life, and the years surrounding menopause call for us to tune into ourselves even more. “What seems like a disruption is an opportunity to listen deeply and reimagine and reorganize one’s life on physical, emotional and spiritual levels.” Marlaina Donato is a freelance writer, author and multimedia artist. Mayonnaise and Ranch Dressing
CRAZY-GOOD CONDIMENTS
DIY Versions Add Zest and Nutrients
W
by Judith Fertig
hile not essential to every dish or meal, condiments provide extra flavoring, final flourishes and added enjoyment to any dish. Such meal accompaniments range from vinegars to spreads and sauces, finishing spice mixtures and natural salts. America’s previous king of condiments was ketchup. Today, according to a 2017 poll from TheDailyMeal.com, it stands behind mayonnaise and mustard with soy and hot sauce rounding out the top five (generic product ranking at Tinyurl.com/Top20Condiments). We often take familiar condiments for granted, yet a look at their ingredients can be startling. Many prominently include processed corn syrup and other sugars, sodium, gluten, monosodium glutamate (MSG), artificial flavors and unpronounceable preservatives, according to Dana Angelo White, a registered dietitian in Fairfield, Connecticut. Homemade versions of condiments provide a happy alternative. They not only taste great, but can be good for us. “Certain condiments add more to your meals than flavor—some actually improve your health,” says White. The potassium in homemade mustard is good for the digestive system through stimulating the flow of saliva, suggests a study in the Indian Journal of Medical Research. Homemade ketchup made with small cooked 24

tomatoes is rich in lycopene, a nutrient that protects heart health, according to research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. White’s fresh-made “THE Green Sauce,” full of vitamin-rich avocado and cilantro, is replete with antioxidants (Tinyurl.com/ TheGreenSauceRecipe).
Better Basics Ketchup
Heather McClees, a plant-based nutritionist in South Carolina who blogs at One Green Planet, once loved commercial ketchup; then she read the labels. “Most ketchup is made of tomato concentrates, sugars, including highfructose corn syrup, cane sugar, agave nectar, coconut nectar/syrup, brown rice syrup, cane juice and cane crystals, vinegar, “spices” that is likely code for MSG, water and refined salt. All of this makes ketchup addicting,” she says. “While you could pay for pricey organic ketchup and condiments that come without added sugars, you can save money by spending five minutes in the kitchen to make your own.” Find a recipe at Tinyurl.com/ HealthyKetchupRecipe.
Mustard
Serious Eats food writer Joshua Bousel uses only six ingredients to make a deliciously easy Grainy Mustard: yellow and brown

Eschewing eggs, J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, of San Mateo, California, uses aquafaba, the starchy liquid in a can of chickpeas, for a plant-based twist on emulsified mayonnaise. Find it at Tinyurl.com/AquafabaMayoRecipe. In her Mebane, North Carolina, kitchen, Kim Campbell, author of The PlantPure Kitchen, makes a plant-based ranch dressing with tofu for body and nutritional yeast, herbs and lemon juice to achieve the characteristic flavor. Find it at Tinyurl.com/ HealthyRanchDressing.
More Exotic Condiments Pomegranate Molasses
Sweet and tart pomegranate molasses can be used like vinegar in salad dressings, as a marinade ingredient or as syrup over pancakes and waffles. Angela Buchanan, aka Angela Cooks, a professor at the University of Colorado, in Boulder, who blogs at SeasonalAndSavory.com, follows the Whole30 program, which bars sugar. Because she also likes Middle-Eastern food, Buchanan experimented and created her recipe for Pomegranate Molasses without added sugar (Tinyurl.com/PomegranateMolassesRecipe).
Superfood Popcorn Seasoning
Green popcorn is fun. With a spirulina powder, garlic powder, sea salt and cayenne pepper spice mix, even a movie snack can be healthy. “Spirulina is one of the most potent of all superfoods. Available in a powder form, it’s a blue-green algae that provides protein, B vitamins and iron. It’s used as a natural energizer, digestive aid and detoxifier,” says Tara Milhern, a holistic health coach in New York City. She also likes it sprinkled on baked potatoes or vegetables as a finishing flavor. See Tinyurl.com/HealthyPopcornSeasoning. Without preservatives, homemade healthy condiments don’t last as long as commercial versions. McClees advises, “I store mine in a glass mason jar for one week in the fridge. I choose a half-pint-size jar, since the less empty space there is at the top of the jar, the longer it keeps.” Judith Fertig writes cookbooks plus foodie fiction from Overland Park, KS (JudithFertig.com).

DIY Condiment Recipes THE Green Sauce
“This sauce is a salad dressing, dipping sauce or sandwich spread,” says nutrition expert Dana Angelo White. “After tasting it, you’ll be putting it on everything.” Yields: about 2 cups

Plant-Based Ranch Dressing “Ranch dressing can be dairy-free and made with tofu, making it plant-based and oil-free,” says Kim Campbell. Yields: about 2 cups 2 lb tofu, about 2 (14-oz) packages 1½ Tbsp fresh parsley, chopped ¾ cup onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic 3 Tbsp distilled white vinegar 2 Tbsp agave syrup 1 Tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp nutritional yeast 1 tsp dry mustard ¼ tsp paprika ½ tsp celery seeds 1 Tbsp dried chives ¾ cup filtered water Blend all ingredients in a food processor until smooth. 1 avocado, peeled and seeded Juice of 2 limes 2 cups fresh cilantro (leaves and stems) 1 jalapeno pepper 2 Tbsp white vinegar 1 Tbsp honey 1 tsp kosher salt ¼ white onion 1 cup filtered water Combine ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Taste for seasoning and adjust as needed. If mixture appears too thick, add a little more water. Courtesy of Registered Dietitian Dana Angelo White
Pomegranate Molasses
It takes about an hour to cook down, but homemade unsweetened pomegranate molasses is worth the time, advises Angela Cooks. Yields: 1 cup 32 oz unsweetened organic pomegranate juice Fill a saucepan with the juice and bring it to a low boil. Reduce the heat so the liquid will stay at a low boil, and let the juice cook down to a scant cup of thick, syrupy liquid. This takes about an hour; note that it will thicken more once it is cooled. Once arriving at a desired thickness while cooking, let it cool completely. Transfer the pomegranate molasses to a glass jar to store in the refrigerator where it will keep well for a few months.
