CITIES WITHIN A CITY
RENZO PIANO BLUEPRINT | ABSTRACT
A Blueprint for Genoa: from Porta Siberia to Punta Vagno
“The Blueprint, donated to the city by the architect Renzo Piano, offers a unique opportunity to deal effectively with one of the most complex nodes, so far unresolved in the planning and the necessary redevelopment of Genoa, in full compliance with the guidelines in the PUC (Civic Urban Plan) recently approved definitively. “The Blueprint combines the need to develop one of the city’s most important industrial sectors – ship repairs– with a quality project, so forming the basis of the process of modification of one of the most delicate and valuable stretches of the whole urban waterfront. At the same time it offers a high-value solution to the relocation of the sporting activities of the historic Genoese sailing clubs. “The revival and development of the ship repair sector requires new spaces and a radical reorganization of all its activities, which will necessarily entail filling in the Duca degli Abruzzi Harbour, now isolated between two areas used for production activities. At the same time, the crisis of the international Trade Fair and the need to redevelop the whole area between Piazzale Kennedy and the Roto da di Carignano offer a unique opportunity to restore a seafront to the city, and to reposition the sports activities in areas and situations of better quality, with all the appropriate facilities for water sports. “The solution proposed by Renzo Piano is the excavation of a long canal parallel to the coast, which extends from the Palazzo dello Sport (Sports Complex) to Porta Siberia. It places the principal point of access on the site of the former NIRA building overlooking the Marina of the Trade Fair, and occupying the boundary area between the municipal property and the domain of the port. “Therefore, passing from the Blueprint to a concretely feasible project will require technical investigations, and it will be essential to develop architectural projects that combine high quality with budgetary restraint, given that the operation is still, at least in part, focused on major public works and therefore be completed without dedicated public investments.”

CITIES WITHIN A CITY | CITTA ALL’INTERNO DI UNA CITTA Renzo Piano Blueprint Competition. Genoa, Italy 4th Year Project, Study Abroad, Fall 2016 Team Project with Emily Ashworth
Studying in Genoa we quickly gained the understanding that the city of Genoa is divided in different parts, with different feels to the city itself. Our site has been very separated through a high wall, as well as through the location and the nature of the site use, which is very temporarily throughout the year. Therefore we decided to create a new part of a city. A new city within a city. Many site use studies later we decided on a regular design, which was based on one concept applied to six buildings, which were only different based on the site characteristics themselves. All buildings were cut by one street/gallery through the building. The design is a mixed use complex, just as the rest of the city of Genoa. Commercial use and parking is located on the two first floors and residential use located on the four upper floors. The height of the building was influenced by our sun study and our wish to create a visual connection to the Mediterranean Sea.

PUBLIC LIBRARY
New Canaan, 151 Main Street, Connecticut 3rd Year Project, Spring 2016 The project asked for flexible and open spaces, changeable based on the users needs. Natural lightning is featured throughout the building. The façade design is changing in such manner, to prevent or allow most possible light, depending on direction. The program spaces are rather laid out than defined by changing the ceiling heights and not defining the ground plane, to allow interactions between the programs. The outer appearance of the building is quoting the site and site surrounding, at the same time the building’s design is unique to the location and therefore will make a statement. By allowing green space and standing out design wise a meeting point is created. The design idea is simple: the Library and the Library technicalities are located on the ground floor, which is slightly elevated, as the parking garage is underneath, with ground windows, allowing ventilation. After parking the car one will reach the central atrium with a spiral staircase and elevators, the main circulation pointt. After hours the library on the first floor can be locked and the second floor spaces might still be open to the community for after hours activities, such as meeting rooms and the auditorium.

PAVILION
On the Site of the Library, New Canaan, Connecticut 3rd Year Project, Spring 2016 The Pavilion was a study to help understand my personal interest of the site that influenced the library’s design significantly. The pavilion is thought to invite the community to leisure activities and set up for resting, playing or maybe even a reading in the center. The roof is cut out in such a way that the center space would be naturally illuminated, just as on a stage. Again the design is mimicking the surrounding trees and is e representation of the surrounding nature as well as the site and it’s shape.

MIXED USE HOUSING
MIXED USE HOUSING PROJECT 3030 N Broadway. Chicago, Il. 3rd Year Project, Fall 2015
This mixed use housing project is located at 3030 N Broadway, Chicago, Il. The entire Groundfloor is commercial and retail use only, while the upper levels are all residential, with 12 units for each, 1-, 2and 3-Bedrooms, at 500-650 SF, 800 SF, and 1,200 SF. The building also includes 6 Luxury units with loft space at 2, 000 SF. The project is a courtyard type building, which orients itlsef on the traditional Chicago courtyard typology. The urban design is devided into private, semi-private, and public garden spaces. The green sourrounding and courtyards are celebrated by glass elevators viewing the outside spaces. Roof terraces on each level underline the importance of garden spaces in the project. Floorplans 1. Floor | Retail + Commercial

VISITOR CENTER
VISITOR CENTER
Woodland’s Cemetery. Clemson, SC 2nd Year Project, Spring 2015 Woodland’s Cemetery Visitor Center is partially oriented on the study of Heatherwicks East Beach Cafe, using the design operation of shifting between floor and roofplan. The building is carefully placed on an uneven site. The windows allow indirect light in the 1200 sf exhibition space and reading room. The nooks may be used as exhibition space, or private reading nooks. Building facts: Exhibiton Space 1200sf. Reading Room 400sf. Entry 100sf. Storage 150sf. Bathrooms 150sf (two, unisex single occupancy).

SPAN THE GAP
SPAN THE GAP 2nd Year, Fall 2014
Two seperated pathways means two different experiences. While the cyclist preferable passes the structure fast, the pedestrian might want to take time, and enjoy the views in all directions, also down, through the transparent rest area. The pathways show different movement as well as a different speed of passing those. Never the less is the rest area with it’s seating accessible from both pathways. Crossing however, for pedestrians and cyclists, starts together on the shared ramp on either shore. The design itself is repetitive in itself, and based on a geometric pattern, which takes input from the studied ruled surface.

Daylighting
EAST BEACH CAFE
Thomas Heatherwick. Littlehampton, UK 2nd Year, Spring 2015 Daylighting: is only coming in from the seaside, because the entire back wall is enclosed to direct the visitors view. Threshold: the uniqueness of the building is the conversation between floor and roof plan, which are not lined up with each other. Structure: the steel structure of the solid back wall is based on a concrete floor; the steel is welded in different pieces and put together. Context: on the backside of the building are big commercial buildings and a street blocking of nice views, the view is endless towards the sea.

RULED SURFACE 2nd Year, Fall 2014
A ruled surface is a curve generated with a series of straight lines between set boundaries. By following set rules design is limited to a certain extent. The drawing shows and follows this system of the definition of a ruled surface. The model however is illustrating implied boundaries, created by itself. The intersection in the center remains the same, just gets slighly rotated, creating a new angle, which then also rotates the boundaries acordingly and creates a circular movement.

Straight Folded Study
Curved Shape Study
Folded plate structures explore the potential for planar material to transform into three dimensional rigid structure. In this study the design was focused on three different types of of structure and form. One is following a curved structural shape. The next one is exploring stability of paper as material in a columnar study. And then the last study focuses on straight folded crease pattern. All three design folds were following a pre-designed crease pattern.

CARPENTER’S ELLIPSE
BOOLEAN OPERATION
To create a Carpenter’s Ellipse two fixed points, set with nails, and string are used. Following a set of rules, different geometric grids were designed and Design was evaluated. The analog work shows a design strictly guided by rules and requirements, while the digital component illustrates a design followed the same rules in a more disengaged manner.
When one shape carves into another shape, it is called a Boolean Operation. The process started with a wireframe model, which then was changed and transformed in drawings, and finally produced as volumetric models.

VILLA SAVOYE
Le Corbusier. Poissy, France 1st Year, Spring 2014
Spatial Experience Analysis
Le Corbusier’s modernist Villa Savoye in Poissy, France, is based on his “Five Points” of a new modern architectural idea. In this study the house as a machine for living is analyzed more recessed. The clean long driveway into the building itself, which is separating private and public space with trees, is creating a transitioning pathway between outside world and personal spaces. The building then continues this transitioning phase by its ramp as a distinctive feature, leading the visitors into it’s inside.

SIKES HALL
Rudolph E. Lee. Clemson, South Carolina 1st Year, Fall 2013
Sikes Hall is a very symmetrical balanced building, including a lot of repetition. While the windows create a very horizontal gran, the columns work opposing creating very vertical grain.
