“...If we hunt, if we farm, even if we botanize, we are beneiting from and sharing in the accumulated experience of others‌it implies we recognize other people as inhabitants of the earth as well as members of a social order. No group sets out to create landscape‌what it sets out to do is create community, and the landscape as its visible manifestation is simply the by-product of people working together, sometimes staying apart, but always recognizing their interdependence - J.B. Jackson (1984)
Project Subject
“...the Unjarga-Nesseby “meahcci” (outields) is where resources are found and where harvesting take place. What is important locally, is the ability to maintain varied (and from time to time changing) harvesting in the outields, because it enables a lexible way of life, through matauk and the ability to birget (cope), and because it contributes to social interaction through food gits and the sharing of meals, based on locally harvested resources. Both the harvesting activities and their following social signiicance, made possible through mutually constitutive relations between animals, plants and landscape, appear highly im-
portant to peoples’ local identity management and sense of belonging.” - Stine Rybraaten (Anthropologist / Norway)

“We have never seen food’s true potential, because it is too big to see. But viewed laterally it emerges as something with phenomenal power to transform not just landscapes, but political structures, public spaces, social relationships, and cities.” - Carolyn Steel (Hungry City: How Food Shapes Our Lives 2013)
Local Landscape Typologies, Resources, & Habitats
“Food is an important part of peoples identity, it builds on knowing your backyard and traditions.... If people do not use something they are not interest in it, they see no value, bringing the resources back, defends these values.” - Svein Harald Holmen (Vardø Resident / Community Activist)
