How To

1 Gather Materials You will need a black shirt (almost any dark color shirt will work though), a handful of rubber bands, a clean bucket you don’t mind putting bleach in, two cups of water, ten capfuls of bleach, rubber gloves, a plastic bag, and access to a washing machine.

4 Bleaching Shirt Start by putting on your rubber gloves. Then take your shirt and place it into your bucket of bleach solution. Gently swirl and rotate the shirt in the bucket of bleach solution making sure to cover the whole shirt in bleach - this process should take about one to three minutes. Once you have the shirt covered in bleach, place the shirt in the plastic bag.

Choose someplace to work where it wouldn’t be a disaster if you spilled bleach (Stay away from carpet). After choosing your location, fill your bucket with the two cups of water and the ten capfuls of bleach. Your workplace is ready to go.

FIG. A

Find the approximate middle of your shirt. Taking two fingers, pinch the middle of the shirt gathering both the front and back of shirt. While still pinching the shirt, pick it up, allowing the shirt to free fall. Now take your rubber bands and place them around your shirt (See Fig. A). Place as many rubber bands around the shirt as you’d like, I recommend at least 4 though. Feel free to experiment with the number of rubber bands on the shirt, and the distance between them - it will affect how your shirt looks at the end.

After about 5-10 minutes, remove the shirt from the bag while still wearing your gloves (the longer you leave it in the bag, the lighter it will get). Then take the rubber bands off of the shirt, and place the shirt into an empty washing machine. Then proceed to wash and dry the shirt as you normally would. Finally, dispose of your materials. Congratulations you reverse tie dyed a shirt.

Overall, I was very happy with how the book turned out. I thought the teal/orange/shades of gray color scheme really pulled it all together. Here are some of my favorite images from the book.
