Avro 504k The original A.V. Roe & Co. (Avro) model 504 was built in 1912 in England, and the public first saw the plane at the second Aeriel Derby in September 1913 at Hendon. The Avro 504K is instantly identifiable by the long skid between its wheels, designed to protect the propeller if the plane should land with its tail too high. Small numbers were bought by the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Navy Air Service before WWI and were taken to France when war broke out. The Avro 504 was the first British aircraft shot down by infantry fire. Despite its lack of success as a fighter, it came into its own as a trainer. An astonishing number of Avro 504s were built over 19 years, as it carried on in military and civilian roles well into the 1930s
