AIM Chesapeake Instructor Named NextGen 40 under 40 Aircraft Maintenance Professional
Manassas Campus Holds Commencement Ceremony By Marion J. Dobbins, AMM
A
Friday the 13th is usually a day of superstition and dread; however this was not an average Friday. On November 13, 2015, the Manassas campus of AIM set about staging their graduation; not in a big hall at a local hotel, nor a church’s auditorium. Instead, the commencement took place in our very own hangar, amid white chairs nestled against an aisle for the graduate’s procession. Sounds of Pomp and Circumstance floated through the air with an aircraft, a Queen Air, as a backdrop. This plane, positioned at center stage now is lovingly being restored by AIM students. The hangar, engines, and landing gear helped to transform the space into an aviation auditorium. By doing so, it also allowed family and friends to feel the experience of their graduate’s studies at AIM. Jan Schoonmaker, Executive Campus Director, conferred the completion of the graduate’s coursework, and all turned their tassels. As the clock ticked, amid the blue robes and gold tassels, the ceremony ended by eating cake to celebrate the accomplishment of being an Aviation Maintenance Technician….now get that A&P! n
IM Chesapeake’s David Karnuth was recently named one of AMT magazine’s NextGen 40 under 40 Aircraft Maintenance Professionals. The inaugural 2015 AMT NextGen Awards showcase individuals in the industry that are going above and beyond their job descriptions and also for their accomplishments in what they bring to their companies and the industry. The Next Gen winners embody the total maintenance arena as they represent airline, general aviation, corporate aviation, military, MROs, rotorcraft, and education segments of the industry.
“
Karnuth says his passion for giving back to the aviation industry is through training and educating new mechanics, while keeping them informed and up-to-date on new and current industry standards, while also emphasizing the importance of safety.
Karnuth began his aviation maintenance career at AIM Chesapeake, where he earned his A&P mechanics certification. While attending AIM, Karnuth was mentored by Nancy Jones, who was named the 2015 Aviation Technician Education Council’s (ATEC) Teacher of the Year. Afterwards, he went on to do heavy maintenance checks and
modifications on many large aircraft including the B737, B747, B767, DC10, A310, A320, A330, and C130. In 2012, he returned to AIM Chesapeake as an AMT instructor, teaching both airframe and powerplant classes and preparing students for their A&P certification. Brad Groom, Director of Education for AIM Chesapeake says, “David’s career has been earmarked by continuously increasing and expanding his knowledge and experiences in the aviation maintenance environment.” Karnuth says his passion for giving back to the aviation industry is through training and educating new mechanics, while keeping them informed and up-to-date on new and current industry standards, while also emphasizing the importance of safety. As for his ultimate career goal, Karnuth says, “As of now, I plan on remaining an instructor at the school because I get a real satisfaction of seeing new A&Ps enter this field.” For a full listing of the winners, please visit the AMT website. n

Admissions Team Attends Wings Over Houston Air Show
Manassas Campus Participates in 6th Annual Aviation Expo By Marion J. Dobbins, AMM
H
aven’t we all had this thought… Why drive when you can fly; especially in the “sprawl and crawl” traffic of Northern Virginia? Evidently, Moses Frisby, an AIM student at the Manassas campus and his father had the same idea as they prepared their family’s Cessna 172 for flight. Their destination was the 6th Annual Aviation Expo in Leesburg VA. Unlike the other 600 guests, representing 25 high schools and learning institutes, Moses explained, “I didn’t want traffic to make me late, so I asked my dad

to fly me in our plane.” Held at the Leesburg Virginia Executive Airport on Friday, October 30, 2015, enthusiastic visitors and students found themselves surrounded by aviation; treated to a day of aircraft static displays, giveaways and demonstrations. This event, sponsored by Projet and partnering with aviation companies, along with AIM Manassas, allowed students a chance to explore career options. All students attending received a souvenir bag packed with promotional goodies. They also were treated to guest speakers providing pearls of wisdom from years of aeronautical know-how. However, most important were the eager students waiting to hear their name called for over $60,000 in scholarship money. Two awards, each worth $2,500 in tuition reduction at AIM, were presented by the Campus Executive Director, Jan Schoonmaker. One was given to Majd Abo Daheer, a junior at Potomac Falls High School/ Monroe Tech and Mariah Daffron a student at Jefferson High School. As for next year’s Expo, I doubt Moses will ask his dad to fly him to the event because he will be a graduate of AIM and well on his way to a fantastic career. n
Dallas Campus Welcomes Jerry Reeves, Designated Mechanic Examiner AIM Houston’s admissions team participated in the Wings over Houston Air Show the weekend of October 17-18, 2015. The two-day event welcomed over 60,000 spectators. The AMH booth greeted spectators with interest in Aviation Maintenance as a careers with facts about the industry and our school. Our campus competition team (Houston Hawks) were speaking with the spectators about their educational experience at AIM Houston while passing out 400 water coolers with the AIM logo. Our Admissions team generated leads and educated the public on the training opportunities that AIM Houston has for the aviation field. We also developed relationships with a few employers in the field of aviation, such as Challenger Aviation Services. The air show was a family affair; with a reenactment of the invasion of Pearl Harbor that included period era planes. The world renowned Thunder Birds put on a spectacular air show. The event had attractions for every age group. Children’s carnival, rock walls, rides, merchandise booths, and food and beverage tents abounded. The annual event gave AMH a great opportunity to expose our brand to the Houston community. n

IM Dallas is very happy to welcome Jerry Reeves, Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME), to its campus. Mr. Reeves has made the Dallas school a one-stop shop for our graduates. They will now be able to complete their airframe/powerplant education, take the FAA written tests, and finish it all off with the oral/practical exam so they can receive A&P licenses without leaving the campus. Mr. Reeves has been a DME since 1991, A&P since 1968, holds an FCC license and is a certified IA. After serving as a mechanic in the US Air Force for 4 years working on B-47’s
and general aviation aircraft, he went to Texas International Airlines/Continental for 14 years working on Convair 600’s and DC-9 aircraft. At Texas Aero Tech, he worked as an instructor along with Milton Maung, AIM Director of Education. He taught basic electricity to Eric Waltz, AIM’s Director of Education for the evening students. Mr. Reeves’ name and reputation is international. He has testers arriving from China, Singapore, Australia and Mexico, weekly. Jerry is happy to call the AIM Dallas his new home, and we are very happy to have him included in our staff. n
Class Chat - Recognition Las Vegas Campus Hosts 2nd Annual STEM Conference
O
n October 16th, AIM Las Vegas hosted the 2nd Annual STEM Conference in collaboration with Rancho High School’s Aviation Program. The high school students spent the day with us on-campus and attended two workshops. One of the workshops focused on Reciprocating Engines and the other on Helicopters. We also served lunch and asked employer partners to participate in Roundtable Panel discussions focusing on aviation career pathways. The panel included partners from Southwest Airlines,
Southwest Gas Corporation–Aviation Division, Grand Canyon Tours (Papillon Helicopters), Sundance Helicopters, and NVBAA (Nevada Business Aviation Association). The Rancho H.S. students asked questions and engaged the panel with discussion topics on aviation careers to include Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics. The panel provided brief bios of their careers and encouraged the students to give serious thought to pursuing their A&P licensure as a stepping stone in career development and future advancement in the aviation industry. It was a great success and an event enjoyed by all. n

O
ne by one the students were filtering into the break room. They were all waiting for the start of our monthly Town Hall meeting. However, this Town Hall was different. It was special; special in the sense the air was filled with anticipation. Jan Schoonmaker, Executive Campus Direct, Charaia Taylor, Financial Aid, and Elizabeth Lacy, Bursar, were to announce the winner of the $500.00 scholarship sponsored by the Experiment Air Association, concurrent with
a matching $500.00 tuition adjustment from the AIM “Scholarship Match Program.” Who was the lucky winner? Bojan Kozic, who successfully wrote an essay on what impact 3D printing, may have on the Aviation Maintenance community. As smiles prevailed and pictures were taken, this Town Hall was adjourned with Bojan Kozic, an AMT student at AIM Manassas accepting a combined $1000.00 in a scholarship and the scholarship match program. Good job Bojan! n
AIM Houston would like to congratulate Michael Mendoza, Andrew Maguire, Kevin Drake, Fernando Ortiz, Katrina Oyer, and Francisco Lagunas for earning the privilege of being inducted into the National Technical Honor Society on November 4, 2015. These students were the latest and greatest to be selected for induction and met the strict criteria to be eligible. The AIM Houston Chapter of the National Technical Honor Society meets every Wednesday to discuss community events, personal and education goals, and show support to their peers. n

We are very proud of each and every one of you. n
Chesapeake’s 2nd Bi-Annual Graduation at the Military Aviation Museum
Top: NASA Space Launch System; Bottom L to R: Jerry Moore, Jerry Wojcieszak and Joe Vaught In early December, 2015, AIM Orlando graduate Doug “Jerry” Wojcieszak stopped by the campus to speak with Campus Executive Director Jerry Moore and Career Services Coordinator Joe Vaught, to talk about his job at NASA, and discuss some of the open positions he sees at his workplace at the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, FL. Jerry obtained his A&P certification shortly after graduating. His success could not have happened without him obtaining his A&P certification shortly after graduating. He now works at NASA with Jacobs ERC, which is the prime contractor for NASA’s (TOSC) Test and Operations Support Contract, which is building its Space Launch System (SLS) heavy-lift rocket and Orion capsule to send humans to an asteroid, Mars and other new destinations in the solar system. Jerry is so excited to go to work each day, knowing that he’s contributing to the future of space travel. He wanted students to know that there are opportunities such as his out there for graduates, if they attain their A&P certification and work hard at their goal, as he did, and they could very well be helping launch vehicles and humans into space and onto Mars! Way to go Jerry! Keep AIMing high! n

n Friday, November 6th at AIM Chesapeake, we had our first Alumni Mechanicon event that took place in the Hangar. The hangar was set up like a mini Las Vegas casino. We had real live dealers, poker tables, roulette tables and a big family feud game! The Alumni’s also had the opportunity to sign the “AIM Wing” for all their hard work, along with participating in a career related workshops to earn additional raffle tickets to win prizes! A big thank you to ASTRO Entertainment who came and set all the games up for our event! n
Oakland Hosts Thanksgiving Potluck By Susanne Shahrodizadh, AMS
Star Wars Day at Indianapolis Campus By Kiley Young, AMI
A
IM Indianapolis celebrated the opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on December 18th 2015 by wearing their favorite Star Wars apparel. This is the seventh instalment in the main Star Wars film series. The Force Awakens is set approximately 30 years after Return of the Jedi (1983), and follows Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron’s fight with the Resistance, led by veterans of the Rebel Alliance, against Kylo Ren and the First Order, descended from the Galactic Empire. The Force Awakens has already generated huge revenues and shattered box office records. Many students expressed their excitement for the upcoming film and had already purchased tickets for the advanced screening of the movie. Students and staff wore their favorite Star Wars shirts and accessories, while AIM Indianapolis student, John Yankauskas (pictured left), went above and beyond with his X Wing Rebel Fighter Pilot costume. n
AMS held a potluck on November 23, 2015. We asked each class to make their own potluck and for each student to bring a dish to share. BBQ’d ham made by the Campus Executive Director Joshua Smith, dinner rolls, and potato salad were provided by AMS for each class. Two staff members from all departments were paired up to join and participate in that class’s potluck. It was a great feast and who doesn’t love a great feast? The potluck was a success and AIM’s staff can truly say we enjoyed an early Thanksgiving with our AIM family. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! n

Chesapeake Salutes Veteran Students with Resource Center
Philadelphia’s Holiday Dinner
By Rick Shonk, AMN
“ Top L to R: Christina Pinasco, Wade Sellers, and Brandon Almy folding the Star Spangled Banner at closing time; Above L to R: Pres Christina Pinasco, Vic Pres James Bateman, Sec Wade Sellers, Treas Lawrence Haywood, not shown MAA Chris Forrester. After the sun has risen in the Tidewater, we begin the day by hoisting Old Glory to the morning sun. These stars and stripes have been a familiar sight to all Americans for over two hundred years, but what she represents to each of us can be very personal and differs somewhat from American to American. She can represent the security and safety of our loved ones, justice, unity, perseverance, kindness and generosity. But, for those of us who have served, The Star Spangled Banner can take on very special meaning such as bravery and valor, the sacred ground we protect, the fallen and what we as Americans and many others in the world cherish, our FREEDOM. Since the American Revolution our young country has been in twelve wars and numerous conflicts. Each time, our military forces have bravely persevered and many sacrificed all so that each and every American could stand tall and enjoy a level of freedom not known since the days of Athenian power. Here at the AIM Veterans Resource Center in Chesapeake, Virginia we work to provide a place where our veterans, especially our student vets, can come, study, read a book, play chess or a board game, surf the net, or just have a cup of joe and hang-out to talk. Led by The Student Veterans Association (SVA)

Here at the AIM Veterans Resource Center we want all Veterans to feel welcome and at home. If there is a need, we will find a solution, or someone who can.”
President, Christina Pinasco, the SVA plays a major role in the operation of the center by providing hot dog sales, raffles, and other fund raising activities that augment and improve the center’s ability to provide a comfortable venue for our veterans to relax in. In fact, we have recently acquired a twenty-two cubic ft. side by side refrigerator for $150.00 courtesy of the SVA. In addition to the recreational aspect of our center, we can help vets, new in the area, to find a place to live, point out the locations of health care clinics, and aid in finding legal assistance. We can also put veterans in contact with the Department of Veterans Affairs and similar organization that can assist them. One such organizations is the American Veterans (AMVETS) who we are in partnership with and who come to our center three times a week to assist veterans filing for disability and other issues. Among the trained AMVETS who give their time to help our student veterans is Mr. Carlton Evans, Mr. Arthur Brown Jr, and Mr. Nathaniel Blount. With years of experience they are able to expedite resolutions to most of the issues that can occur during the course of a veteran’s service. In conclusion, here at the AIM Veterans Resource Center we want all veterans to feel welcome and at home. If there is a need, we will find a solution, or someone who can. So, if you’re in the area stop in and pay us a visit. We look forward to seeing you. This is Rick Shonk AT1 (AW) Ret. underway with AIM Veterans Resource Center. n Contributions from Denton Clark, Michael Smaw, and Wade Sellers.
P
hiladelphia AIM hosted another Holiday Dinner for the students on December 16, 2015. Rosalind Baldwin (Student Services Coordinator) has completed the mission of feeding the students to the point of combustion. The lunch room was decorated and set up as a dining area with a buffet that consisted of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, mixed vegetables, and rolls and butter... Oh don’t forget the cranberry sauce that Robyn Pettiford (Financial Aid) served and she made sure that every student had some on their plate. There is always a need for something sweet after dinner, so we put hundreds of candy canes everywhere. The entire staff participated in serving both day and evening students. They could eat as much as they wanted and as we all know, when there is food there are students. A great way to ensure perfect attendance for a day. A special thanks to Cannstatter’s Vein Volkfest a local German Catering Hall that prepared the food for over 400 people. They have been doing this for us for the past five years and it’s fantastic. The dinner is our way of saying thank you for being a student here at AIM Philly. Happy & healthy holidays to all. n

Veteran’s Day at Orlando
By Ivan Rodriguez, AMO
V
eteran’s day at AIM Orlando has a special meaning because at the heart of the school is a strong identity with the armed forces. We have many veterans serving at AIM Orlando, from our Campus Executive Director, to many of our instructors. Over 25% of our student body represents every branch of the armed forces. On Wednesday, November 11, 2015, AIM Orlando had a special day of celebration to recognize current and former armed forces veterans. The day began with the instructors recognizing the veterans present in their individual classrooms and then two videos were shown. The first video was a salute to Veteran’s Day and it presented the different branches of the armed forces and their contribution to defending freedom, democracy and the American way. The second video that followed was the full version of the Star Spangled Banner. The students responded positively in recognizing their fellow veteran classmates and gave them a salute and a round of applause as they watched the videos with a sense of patriotic pride. When the sounds of the national anthem filled the classroom, the veterans stood with their best military salute while the classroom was silent and respectful. This short, but meaningful ceremony was received with the utmost respect by the student body. The veteran students were treated to lunch in the hangar which was served by the Student Services

Team and the Program Coordinators. Our veterans shared their lunch time while developing a sense of identity and pride in their common bond of proudly serving our country. Members of the faculty also joined the celebration and shared lunch and fellowship with the veterans. Mr. Moore, CED, came to salute the students and offered words of encouragement and wishes for their successful training at AIM Orlando. Throughout the rest of the day, there was a sense of pride and camaraderie throughout the school, and it seemed that the smiles on their faces were bigger than on any other day. n
Atlanta Donates Brown Bags to People Helping People By Morgan Brown, AMA As a part of AIM Atlanta’s ongoing community outreach, our staff put together a packed lunch drive to donate to People Helping People, a charitable organization in our area that specifically works with the homeless. Conceived, planned and coordinated by Student Affairs Coordinator, Adrienne Tooke, the staff filled the conference room and took their places along the assembly line. Staff worked in tandem to make and assemble peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, which were then packed along with granola bars, crisp apples and bottles of juice into brown paper bags, finished off with customized labels. We were so proud and excited to participate. n
is the season…it is that time of year where the holiday spirit is in the air and the AIM Kansas City students, faculty and staff showed that. On a day that will never be forgotten, December 7th, 2015; which holds a lot of history and sadness but also a day of blessings. On this day our veterans, students, faculty and staff presented Ashley Roams, a veteran pregnant with her first child, with clothes, bouncers, swings, diapers, a crib with mattress and other items along with a financial donation. The cash donation helped this single mother purchase a stroller with attachable car seat and matching diaper bag. Ashley was previously in the United States Air Force and she decided to leave the service to be a full-time mom. The idea to adopt a family came from a night student who is part of the Veterans group here on campus and with the Campus Directors blessing, it spread like wildfire. Little Lily is even going to receive her first Build-A-Bear thanks to an instructor and his wife! The overwhelming response by all to help this young lady in need definitely represents the true meaning of the season.

This one act of kindness has now turned into a quarterly event that we will hold for our students.”
When Ashley arrived to receive her gifts, she had no idea what to expect. Without giving it away, we called her and said just be sure you have a couple vehicles with you to pick up your gifts! She was overcome with gratitude and so appreciative that she literally hugged everyone that was there! Thanks to all that were involved, she will have a great Christmas and is set for quite some time. This one act of kindness has now turned into a quarterly event that we will hold for our students. AIM KC Closet will be accepting donations of clothing and other items that our students may be able to use. It will be based on a first come first serve basis and the students will be supporting each other. Way to go AIM Kansas City! This one thought will now prosper into a lifetime of giving. n
