Expressions from America’s Military Children

Visual arts and writing allow us a glimpse into the world of military children from their unique perspectives. The Military Child Education Coalition® (MCEC®) believes artistic expression is a pure, sincere, and candid way for children to communicate pride in their parents, celebrate their lives, acknowledge their grief or worry, and much more. Since the MCEC began the “Call for the Arts,” thousands of military children from across the world and from every branch of service have mailed us their drawings, poems, and interpretations of what it means to be a military child. We hope what you see here paints a poignant picture for you, too. Enjoy this visual representation of our unique, resilient children making their own sacrifices and serving our country. “I Know” by Elisa Solomon I know what it feels like to move again and again, I know what it’s like to see the brown cardboard boxes never end. I know what it’s like to have to adapt to a new environment, and I know what it’s like to see loved ones dream of retirement. I know what it’s like to have to make new friends, just so you can leave them before the year even ends. I’ve been to the airports waving my last goodbye; I know what it’s like to see the plane shoot for the sky. I know what it is like to see loved ones deployed for years at a time, and I know what it’s like to wait on their call at half past nine. I know what it’s like being up late at night, worrying about your loved ones--Are they alright? But I also know what it’s like to see loved ones come home. I’ve experienced the laughter and the hugs; the joyous reuniting; the storytelling and the smiles. I’ve seen the sense of relief in my mom’s eyes, the gentle exhale, the soothing sigh. And I often wonder how we did it, and then I remember we’re military, we push through it. The military families have the endurance, the ability to persevere through even the strongest storms. The military families provide support and while the Soldiers are gone, we hold down the fort. Military families have strength, the ability to face trials and tribulations head on. Military families are the shoulder to cry on when a best friend’s dad who saved his unit is now gone. Military families are the elite force, and do so much to show their support. They extend themselves in times of need, which is the true fulfillment of duty, honor, country. Military families go through a lot at times, and are heroes as much as the Soldiers they stand behind. And though we are not on the very front lines, we are the strong, supportive, loving, faithful, honest, hopeful, brave foundation that makes the armed forces shine. So thank you Soldiers for all that you do, and thank you families for just being you. Elisa Solomon, Poet

When I look in the mirror...

When I look in the mirror... I see my shell My soft brown eyes The chlorine bleached hair And the olive toned skin.

When I look in the mirror... I see the athlete The swimmer, The reader, And the do-it-yourself kind of girl When I look in the mirror... I see my family The daughter of Suzanne and Greg The European features But somehow not the Irish part of me. When I look in the mirror... I see who I really am The hidden tears The treasured smiles And the girl who can accomplish anything!

I wish I could...

I wish I could... To sour among the clouds, To travel across the ocean blue And feel the wind pass by.

I wish I could... Breathe under water. Never having come up for air, Forever explore the deepness and beauty, To swim among the ocean creatures. I wish I could... Go back in time And tell my friends I love them, To undo the wrong I’ve dome, To solve all of my troubles. I wish I could... Begin to know How life will be. To know all of my successes And know all of my failures.

The Independent Charities Seal of Excellence is awarded to the members of Independent Charities of America and Local Independent Charities of America that have, upon rigorous independent review, been able to certify, document, and demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness, and cost effectiveness. These standards include those required by the U.S. Government for inclusion in the Combined Federal Campaign, probably the most exclusive fund drive in the world. Of the 1,000,000 charities operating in the United States today, it is estimated that fewer than 50,000, or 5 percent, meet or exceed these standards, and, of those, fewer than 2,000 have been awarded this Seal.
