Learn from the Experts Families and Depression: Coping with Adversity while Nurturing Resiliency in Children William R. Beardslee, M.D. Director, Preventive Intervention Project at Judge Baker Children’s Center and the Prevention of Depression Study

Dr. Beardslee is the author of Out of the Darkened Room - When a Parent Is Depressed: Protecting the Children and Strengthening the Family, and is a nationally recognized expert on families and depression. Dr. Beardslee’s long-standing research interest has centered on the development of children who are at risk due to severe parental mental illness, and focuses on the ways in which selfunderstanding helps individuals cope with adversity and helps families cope with depression while nurturing resiliency in children.

What We Can Learn from Military-Connected Children Ann Masten, Ph.D. University of Minnesota and President of the Society for Research in Child Development

Dr. Masten studies competence, risk and resilience in human development, focusing on the processes leading to positive adaptation and outcomes in young people whose lives are threatened by adversity. Her work centers on the goals of building a better science of resilience and to inform efforts to promote positive development, reduce risk, ameliorate suffering, and facilitate recovery in children and families threatened by negative life circumstances.

LTG (Ret) H.G. “Pete” Taylor Partnership of Excellence Award In recognizing Lieutenant General Taylor’s dedication and work toward assisting military children, the MCEC Board of Directors established the LTG (Ret) H.G. “Pete” Taylor Partnership of Excellence Award at its annual conference in 2004. The award, presented annually, may represent a single project in which the military installation(s) and the school district(s) participated, or it may be a summation of the entire program between military installation(s) and school district(s) which serve the installation(s).

Collaborative Training Sessions Learn Together...

Intermingled throughout the two-day agenda are four facilitator lead Collaborative Training Sessions. All participants will be involved in collaborative tabletop discussions allowing attendees to not only learn from subject matter experts, but also from each other while building a supportive network of colleagues with a like mission. As attendees add their voice and diverse expertise to the discussion, everyone acquires practical skills that can be implemented both professionally and personally. Select sessions include members of the MCEC Student 2 Student (S2S) program.

Cancellation: All cancellations must be received in writing by email to registration@militarychild.org. Refunds, minus the following cancellation fees will be issued as follows: Cancellation Fee is $75 if notification is received prior to 05-31-13. Cancellation Fee is $150 if notification is received 06-01-13 to 06-21-13.
