2013 Bernard Curtis Brown II Memorial NASA Space Camp Scholarship Application Application Deadline: March 10, 2013

NASA Space Camp (www.spacecamp.com) is a place of learning where kids come together for a journey they will never forget. For many, it is a life-changing event – helping them make decisions about their educational and vocational careers. This extraordinary adventure teaches our youth about astronauts and space travel… and so much more. They learn leadership and they develop bonds of friendship that can last a lifetime. The Military Child Education Coalition created a Space Camp scholarship program in memory of one of America’s bright young Military Children, Bernard Curtis Brown II. Bernard, the 11 year-old son of Chief Petty Officer and Mrs. Bernard Curtis Brown, died tragically on September 11, 2001, when the hijacked airliner on which he was a passenger, crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. At the time, Bernard was on his way to California to represent his school at a National Geographic event. Bernard’s parents agreed to allow the MCEC to honor Bernard’s memory with this scholarship to provide other military-connected children with the opportunity to experience the worlds of science and learning, and share their experiences of service to the nation, as proud members of Military Families.

About Space Camp The Space Camp is a six-day program that shows young men and women firsthand what it takes to be an astronaut. Activities include simulated Space Shuttle missions, training simulators, rocket building and launches, scientific experiments, and lectures of the past, present, and future of space exploration.

Space Camp is offered in Huntsville, Alabama, and takes a unique, fun and hands-on approach to learning outside the classroom – and students leave with a greater appreciation for school and their studies. Each child learns about astronauts and space travel, but they also experience something even more important: developing bonds of friendship. For more detailed information about Space Camp, visit their Web site at <www.spacecamp.com>. Scholarship Information The Bernard Curtis Brown II Memorial Space Camp scholarship is funded by the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC). Growing a Community of Support ...for the sake of the child Multiple deployments coupled with extended family separation have strained our military families. With service members engaged on two fronts, the impact on families will be felt for years to come. To help military families and their children thrive in this environment, the Military Child Education Coalition® (MCEC®) has developed evidence-based programs to support military-connected children and youth from pre-kindergarten through grade 12.

The MCEC has identified two critical gap areas in which needs go unmet: 1) Many severely injured veterans receiving treatment in a military hospital or polytrauma center have children who require support. Maintaining a child’s academic requirements while coping with new family stressors and demanding therapy/counseling schedules present challenges. The MCEC proposes to support children of Wounded Warriors by conducting TMAS community events and implementing S2S mentoring programs incommunities surrounding the medical facility. 2) Densely populated areas with large military communities, but no major military installation, result in military-connected youth who are dispersed over several school districts. The Washington, D.C., metro area is a prime example. The MCEC proposes to expand sustainable S2S and JS2S programs in areas meeting these parameters.

We need your help to close the gaps. Your tax deductible donation to the MCEC, a 501 (c)(3) organization, funds student and literacy programs providing vital peer and community support systems. Proceeds will be designated to fund student and literacy initiatives or general student programs.

Space Camp Winners Most were at the top of their class academically. Most excel in science and math. Many were active in Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. Some plan to be astronauts. These descriptions are representative of the 15 military-connected youths selected as the 2012 winners of the Bernard Curtis Brown II Memorial Space Camp scholarships. These 15 youths bring the total scholarships awarded to 132 from the time the program began in 2002. The first year, there was funding for only one scholarship.

10 Ways to Help a Military Child... For the almost 2 million children with a parent or loved one serving today in the United States military, this year may bring a deployment of their parent or loved one, an order to move to a new base across the country, or a life changed forever by injury or death. It is these trying circumstances – in these trying times of extended deployments – that remind us of the sacrifices, bravery and courage of the youngest among us: the military child. What is the most important way each of us can honor those who serve our country so bravely? Make a 12-month effort to keep the spotlight on these amazing children and the loved ones who support them. Here are some ways to do this:

Share Your Strengths and Resources - Volunteer to share your Web-cam so a military family can see their loved one serving abroad, or use your computer’s scanner to e-mail their drawings and photographs.

Do Routine Things Routinely - Especially in times of transition and change, children need routine and structure. Maintain their daily routines, and stick to a schedule to ensure balance and comfort in the child’s life.

Keep Standards High - Military-connected children are kids first and military children second. Offer them the same opportunities as every child and maintain the same high expectations for their success.

Reach Out - Military-connected children are in every school, every town, and every community, so ask around at your workplace, church, or your local recreation center to find military-connected children and learn how you can help.

Stay Flexible - Also remember that deployment of a parent or loved one means the family is operating with one less spoke in the wheel. Offer your help instead of criticism if the child is a few minutes late to soccer practice or forgets the juice on snack day.

Know Your Neighbor - Life gets hectic, but take time to meet the military families in your community and learn their story so you can better understand what they are going through.

Be a Mentor - Step up to offer support for the child by becoming a part of their daily life, or serving as a positive role model.

Support the Deployed Troops - Make an effort with military-connected children to reinforce pride in their parent who is serving, and to recognize the nobility of their service. Help the child send a care package to their parent, or help prepare signs for the homecoming celebration!

Bring Brownies or Offer to Drive to Brownies - Deployment often means the waiting parent becomes a single parent, so help out by offering to carpool to activities, or bring over a home-baked meal or goodies for the family to enjoy. •

Reassure, Encourage, and Praise - Reassure children that they are safe and loved and doing a good job.

Military children are your neighbors and your child’s classmates and playmates. They are the children next to you at religious services each week, and the children you see at school and on the playground every day. For their sacrifices, their honor, and their courage, they deserve the best.

Who has a say in your life but you? In my life, only me! Who gets to say who you are? In my eyes, only me! Who says you have to be? Nobody. You only control you. Why follow when you can lead? Lead you and only you. Why stress, when you can have everlasting happiness? Do whatever it takes to be happy! Who is your hero? For mine is my military hero. What have I learned from him? To be real and be me. The presence of a military hero can change a life. And raise a life, A child, An entire person. For my military child has changed mine!
