MB+RY Collected Illustrations for The Rebel Yell: August - November 2012

To Becca You had one job.

MB+RY

introduction I was attending a couple of summer courses when I befriended one of the photographers for The Rebel Yell, our school newspaper. She referred me to one of her friends, who happened to be the publication’s Art Director. One thing led to another and eventually I landed the job as illustrator for the opinion section. The pay was expectantly small, but outside of commissioned work for friends, this was my first time getting paid professionally to draw. It really does a number on my self-esteem and makes me hopeful for the future. I took it as a chance to basically get paid to work on my drawing skills.

This book collects my small but ever-growing contributions to the RY. The majority of which I am somewhat embarrassed of sharing again. To fellow employees of the RY and any future employers, ignore the self-deprecation. I’d never put anything up I felt wasn’t fit to print. I constantly criticize my stuff, but the quickfire nature of the workflow doesn’t allow me the time to mope about every little detail. It can be a blessing though, as it teaches me to let go and not worry too much. It’s during those times of clarity that I produce work that I’m most proud of and don’t mind remembering. Unfortunately, this happens maybe one out of ten assignments.

I feel myself improving and I’m constantly learning more about myself as an artist through every illustration I do. I hope later on I can look back at this small collection as a reminder of how much I’ve grown instead of as a compilation of silly doodles.

“You’re gonna draw a lot of humanoid elephants.” This is what Cole (the Opinion Editor) told me during our first few email exchanges. As someone who likes to try new things to avoid boredom or artistic staleness, reading that was a little frightening. Thankfully, drawing them were few and far between. For the sake of not bombarding you with political mascots throughout the book, here they all are, conveniently grouped in one page for you to skip over.
