The word from Rod
Bike Maintenance, Page 11
Welcome to the second edition of the ‘Triumph Enthusiasts at Millard’ magazine. We’ve had some great feedback from our first edition in September and look forward to bringing you many more. This month I would like to thank photographer Chris de Blank for coming along with us on our ride and supplying photos for the magazine. Last month Triumph announced the release of the 2016 Bonneville range. The bikes are available for advance orders ready for a February release for the Street Twins, with the rest of the range available from March, 2016. In design and production for four years, these new Bonneville models mark the start of a new chapter for Triumph motorbikes. Stock is limited.

easier. Triumph are now offering their own financing for new motorbikes at very competitive rates. Also available is Triumph Motorcycle Insurance, which features new replacement for bikes less than two years old. Thanks again to those who joined us in our ride to Quindanning Hotel. It was a little hot on the day but was still a great ride and everyone made it home safely. Make sure you join the South West RATS Facebook page to stay in touch with news on upcoming rides, and if there isn’t a ride running then use the group to see who’s free and put together your own. Ride safe, and on behalf of everyone at Millard, have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Rod, Owner Millard Motorcycles

DAN MITCHELL BOAT PARTS MANAGER
Not everyone who works at Millard deals with bikes. Dan is a familiar face you’ll be used to seeing working behind the parts counter, especially if David is busy helping someone. Although he specialises in boats, a lot of the helpful advice he has for customers swings both ways, whether you are on the road or on the water. Bunbury born and bred? Been here since I was five, so went to school in Bunbury. Boats or bikes? Boats – I’ve had some Quintrexes and now have a Caribbean. And are you a keen fisherman? We used to do a lot of water skiing - in fact, I’ve still got original ski gear from 30 years ago. Not so much fishing. Most of my family loves fishing, my Dad, my brother, but it didn’t rub off onto me. I’ve been out fishing a lot, but I’m just not a really good fisherman. Saying that, I love crabbing and I used to go every Saturday morning if I wasn’t working, even through winter, both here and in Busselton. Do you still go out often? I’ve got four children who’ve grown up now, but we used to do a lot of boating when they were younger. When they get families it gets harder to get out, and boating is hard work. As the Skipper, there is not only the preparation, but you have to make sure everything is under control and make sure everybody knows what’s going on. Like if you go skiing, everyone has fun but as well as preparation there is cleaning up and packing away. At the end of the day its good fun and one of the best family things you can do.
Have you always worked in parts? No, I’m an outboard mechanic by trade. What’s changed working in a shop over the years? Store loyalty has changed a lot over the years, especially with online shopping. But if I need a part for, say my lawn mower, then I want to go somewhere where I hope someone will give me a little bit of help, just for two secs. Recently I’ve had experiences where no one wants to help you in a store, where back in my day we were taught you have to look after your customer. Unfortunately, we get a lot of people come in here who are looking for some advice and nobody else wants to help them, like at a large car yard they’re told just to bring it in and it’ll be looked at. At Millard we’ll give you a few minutes of our time to put you on the right track. So, any advice for the boat or bike owner? If you’re not sure about something, then come in to Millard and ask. We’re all happy to give advice, whether it’s me, Rod (the owner) or Michael the Service Manger, to stop you making expensive mistakes which we see all the time. I think these mistakes come from the experience of going somewhere else where no one wants to help, so people decide to start dismantling things themselves. As this is a bike magazine, do you ride? Yes, since I was 18. I now ride a Triumph Speedmaster but I’m just a casual rider. Any recommendations for rides in the SW? I don’t do a lot of long rides, so my only advice is be very careful and follow the road rules.

OUR MEMBERS & THEIR RIDES
GREG HARRIS RED AND BLACK THUNDERBIRD COMMANDER 1700CC Where are you from? I was born in Bunbury and my parents initially lived in Dardanup. However, we moved to the wheatbelt town of Kellerberrin in 1960. That’s where I grew up, began working and got married. I’ve lived in Eaton since 1998 and now reside in Millbridge. How long have you been riding? I started riding in about 1978 - scooters at first then a small road bike. What was your first bike? My first bike after the scooters was a Suzuki GN250. After returning to riding in my later years, my first bike was a Kawasaki VN800 cruiser. What’s your favourite ride and best place to stop? My favourite short ride is south to Dunsborough, either the coffee shop, the Dunsborough Tavern, Clancy’s Fish Pub or just anywhere along the coast. I also enjoy our annual weekend ride to Albany. My most regular destination is a little closer to home – CAFÉ Bean every Saturday morning. What’s the best thing about riding a bike? I very much enjoy the friendships that I’ve made as a result of riding. I enjoy the freedom of two wheels, the exhilaration of being in control of a powerful machine and it’s better than being stuck in an office or at home mowing the lawn. Advice for new riders: Take it easy and learn how to ride properly as it may save your life. Spend the money and buy the right protective equipment. Any bike is fun but get some good advice and buy a bike that suits you and how you want to ride.
JOHN FYFE MATT BLACK SPEEDMASTER 900CC Where are you from? I’m originally from Victoria and have lived in around Dunsborough-Busselton for the last 21 years. How long have you been riding? I started riding when I was twelve and have had my bike licence since I was nineteen. What was your first bike? The first bike I rode around on was a Honda postie bike CT110, and after my licence I had a Yamaha TT250, which was my first road bike. What’s your favourite ride and best place to stop? My favourite place to stop would be Nannup at the Blackwood Café. You could say it’s the roundabout of the south west, leading off to all the different roads down here. What’s the best thing about riding a bike? The freedom but also, and it’s hard to describe, not exactly ‘therapeutic’ but you go for a ride and actually feel good afterwards. Maybe a form of meditation, I’m not sure exactly how to explain it. Advice for new riders: Know you limitations. Don’t get the biggest bike you can get just because you’ve got the license for it. Similar to me with my Speedmaster, if I went straight to a Thunderbird, I would have lost points by now, or worse, killed myself. Ride a bike that suits your limitations.

n t e n i a m TYRE PRESSURE Last edition I talked about the need to keep an eye on your bike’s tyre pressure, but had trouble thinking of something this month. For cleaning, we recommend using Mr Sheen on paintwork and chrome. Then, apart from checking your oil, which should be done before each ride in case you burnt some off in the last ride, there isn’t any other maintenance you should do at home. A bike has only two wheels; you do something wrong, you fall off and get hurt. So if you don’t know what you’re doing then don’t touch it! That’s what professional servicing is for – which is this month’s topic. When is the best time to service? If you store your bike away over winter, then the best time to get a service is the beginning of summer. Otherwise, check your manufacturer’s recommendations. For Triumph, some models are recommended to be serviced at 10,000km and others at 16,000km, but still once a year is preferable. Make sure whoever services your bike is properly qualified and has access to a fully equipped workshop and genuine replacement parts.
