Development Report The 2020-2021 school year was, in a word, uplifting. The campus was alive with students, faculty, and staff PULLING TOGETHER AGAINST ALL ODDS TO CREATE A PLACE TO SAFELY LEARN during uncertain times. Was it easy? No. Were we concerned? Yes. But underlying the concerns and the what-ifs lay the determination of a community willing to go the extra mile to succeed. Underpinning our success on campus was the

one-of-a-kind book of collected letters, Letters to an Educator. At a

greatest fundraising year in Millbrook’s

planned triple-reunion Alumni Weekend in June 2022, we will again

(past and present), trustees, friends, and faculty helped us reach our ambitious Annual Fund goal. Gifts to the school totaled over $15,000,000, double what we raised the previous year. This incredible overall fundraising figure was the direct result of capital gifts and pledges in support of Millbrook’s future and included a bequest from James W. Laird ’65 and a generous donation from Jesse M. Bontecou ’44. Millbrook Momentum at its best!

Today, the campus is bustling with activity. Construction on Pulling House and a new alumni house will soon be underway. We are looking ahead and planning for a new field house addition to the Mills Athletic Center, new faculty housing units, a new boys dormitory, and other projects we expect to achieve by 2025. We are building on the many accomplishments of the 2020-2021 school year: 29 weeks of in-person school, the construction of a new counseling center and business office,

constituency together to have meaningful conversations. By May, we were able to hold in-person gatherings, including Commencement, which was followed by a special Class of 2020 gathering to honor the only Millbrook class unable to celebrate their graduation together on campus. We planned and enjoyed many other celebrations as we bid farewell to

Strong leadership, a talented and hardworking faculty and staff, a full school, and our incredible donors who support and care for this school continue to fuel Millbrook’s Momentum. 2021-2022 here we come—full steam ahead! With endless gratitude from the alumni and development team,

Millbrook School

COMMENCEMENT 2021 On Sunday, May 30, the Class of 2021 celebrated a joyful commencement on the Flagler Quad. A cool and rainy day could not dampen the sense of community and accomplishment that pervaded campus. To close out this remarkable year, throughout which all students demonstrated the resilience, determination, and grit needed to preserve in-person learning at Millbrook during the COVID-19 pandemic, families were welcomed to campus to safely celebrate with their graduates. Commencement Weekend, while in-person, looked a bit different this year, as it was, in fact, a Commencement Day. Prize Ceremony, traditionally held the night before Commencement Exercises, began a day of celebration under the tent. Following a brief interlude for lunch, Headmaster Drew Casertano welcomed students and families to Millbrook’s 90th Commencement Exercises, the final of his 31-year tenure at Millbrook. Board of Trustees Chair Bill Menard ’78 (P ’09,’12,’12) spoke thoughtfully about the role of trustees and his gratitude for all who make Millbrook, Millbrook. Commencement Speaker Dr. Scott Rodeo P ’22, a member of Millbrook’s COVID-19 Medical Advisory Committee, commended students for rising to the challenges of learning and living in a pandemic and encouraged the graduating class to continue to work hard, hold their families close, and embrace change as an opportunity for growth. The VIth Form Commencement Speaker, selected by his classmates, was self-proclaimed “agent of chaos” Artemis Köprülü. He saluted Headmaster Casertano, thanked faculty and staff, and spoke glowingly of his classmates and their collective experience. “During our time here, we have been a part of building the school’s community…I hope you will remember our class and this place like I will,” he said. “We were a class that loved each other and loved the school,” he continued, “I hope you will take that love with you and share it with others and use it to build communities with just as much connection and spirit as ours.” The Casertano Cup, a new award given in 2021 for growth and perseverance in pursuit of the best self and the common good, was awarded to Dainalee Velez and Drew Deery and will become an annual special Commencement prize. The other traditional special prizes awarded during Commencement Exercises included: Sportsmanship Cup to Charles Weisberg, Community Service Cup to Noor Rahman, and Summa Cum Laude to Hannah Stewart. It was a spectacular ending to an extraordinary year. Congratulations to the Class of 2021!

Noor Rahman AMHERST COLLEGE Amherst's open curriculum is very appealing as it allows me the opportunity to explore various areas of study without constraints and discover new pursuits unrelated to my past interests. I am looking forward to joining a diverse student body and meeting students and professors from backgrounds different from my own. Amherst has a strong culture of nurturing student-teacher relationships, which is something I came to value from my time at Millbrook. Millbrook also taught me how to maximize opportunities by accessing resources all around me, both academic and otherwise.

EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT Her effort, her adaptability, her good humor, her ability to understand what needs to get done…all these qualities apply to her experiences in and out of the classroom. She makes great moot court arguments, and she recites poetry beautifully. She writes fluently in French and builds rockets and can make almost anything out of clay. Very few people do any of those things as well as she does all of them. But even more notable is that she constantly uses all of her talent and energy to make the world, and our school, better. We are all better for her stamina and her strength as well as her raw talent. –Mark Clizbe

Justin DeFour CORNELL UNIVERSITY My decision to go to Cornell was influenced by the reputation of the college, not just as an Ivy League school, but as one of the best engineering schools in the country. Science and engineering have been lifelong interests, and I plan to focus on computer engineering. At Millbrook, I learned when to ask for help and when to rely on my peers and professors, so I shouldn't have trouble asking for support if I need it. Millbrook prepared me to be more independent and resourceful. I gained confidence in myself and a belief that I can handle schoolwork and extracurriculars while enjoying all that a college like Cornell has to offer.

EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT He loves to challenge himself to achieve more than the required work in math, science, and programming and to develop theories and test ideas. His style is to find subtle, meaningful ways to contribute to the community. Justin impresses people. His academic skills are fierce, and he engages deeply with work he finds fulfilling. Justin is a quiet leader who enhances our community in so many understated ways. –Nicki Schermann

Owen Collins UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, IRVINE I chose the University of California, Irvine because of the rigorous academics and the career and networking opportunities available at such a large and renowned research university. Millbrook science classes helped me define my interests and plan a course of study, and the required courses and electives gave me a chance to actually do science and to make my own observations and discoveries. I believe that my time at Millbrook instilled values that will help me to navigate and maximize my college experience.

EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT Owen grew into an excellent leader over the course of his time at Millbrook. He jumped at every opportunity to strengthen our community during his year as a dorm leader and prefect. Owen was always a strong student, but he was also generous with his knowledge, always willing to help others understand. Millbrook will miss him, and I have no doubt that he will bring his unique style of care, effort, and humor to UC Irvine. –Jake Philbin-Cross

Hanji Xu UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY I chose UC Berkeley from among many other options because it was important for me to try new things in new places, and Berkeley's urban, West Coast environment is wildly different from Millbrook. Berkeley's undergraduate program will also solidify my foundation as I further explore the many interests I developed at Millbrook - music, entrepreneurship, clubs, and activist culture and begin to narrow my academic focus. My Millbrook mentors were all extraordinarily passionate about their subjects, and I am glad to have taken so many advanced and AP classes. I learned to aim for excellence without getting lost in perfection, and I absolutely found truth in the idea that what makes a place memorable are the people who create it.

EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT As a scholar, Hanji’s curiosity seems insatiable, as does her love of learning. She is generous and wise, with so many interests, a genuine polymath, a true embodiment of all that Millbrook expects. –Drew Casertano

Anna Metzger UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA I applied early decision to the University of Pennsylvania because of the diverse school community and flexible multidisciplinary curriculum. I have wanted to pursue architecture for many years, and Penn has an amazing program; however, it is exciting and comforting to me that I will not be limited to just architecture. I will be able to explore many different subjects and challenge myself in new ways. The Millbrook community encourages leadership, curiosity, and integrity, qualities that will help me thrive at Penn.

EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT Anna is a scholar, and her positive attitude, enthusiastic energy, and love of knowledge inspired her peers. Anna is creative, writing lyrically as Hamlet raging against the state in a time of COVID and designing housing for Millbrook’s faculty in Independent Science Research. Anna is brave, taking a lead role in Grease, reading her work at a Literary Showcase, and presenting at the Science Symposium. Anna is kind, serving as a consistent and empathetic peer counselor. She has mentored, nurtured, and led, and to paraphrase Mr. Casertano, Anna definitely ‘leaves Millbrook better than she found it’! –Nancy Keller-Coffey

I’m eager for the independence and responsibility that comes with college and feel well prepared thanks to my time at Millbrook. The personal skills I learned at Millbrook, like time management, self motivation, and organization, will be invaluable to me in college and throughout my life.

EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT Charlie frequently embodied John Wooden's teaching, ‘Be more concerned with your character than your reputation because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.’ Charlie worked diligently to be a person of high character in the classroom, in athletics, and in the dorms. It was a pleasure working with him for four years! –Pat Stewart

Shakur Mohammed DUKE UNIVERSITY I chose Duke because it is the perfect place for me to grow as a student-athlete and, more importantly, as a person. The balance of a topnotch soccer program and standout academics felt like the perfect fit for me. At Millbrook, I learned to embrace teamwork and to see how effective I could be when working as part of a team. Almost everything at Millbrook is about the success of the group or community beyond individual achievement. What I learned about teamwork at Millbrook will be vital to my success and happiness moving forward.

EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT Shakur authentically brings people together, and while he is driven, he is open to learning more than content and skills. He is always working to become a better student. He is willing to take academic risks and challenge the opinions and contributions of others. He has demonstrated not only intellectual talent, but also intellectual curiosity, balancing serious goals and intellectual pursuits with humor and goodnatured interactions with peers and teachers. Shakur’s core beliefs and values ground him with confidence, humility, and a solid work ethic that will take him far at Duke and beyond. –Dave Whiting

Millbrook prepared me for college by giving me a place to learn how to think. I felt that I was able to challenge myself by taking chances and trying new things with the knowledge that support would be there if I needed it.

EDUCATOR’S INSIGHT Hannah is an exceptional human. Her thinking is sophisticated, polished, and fluid. She is exemplary, enthusiastic, and insightful. She grasps nuance immediately and can communicate complex ideas with great clarity. CES PROGRAM

ISABEL FINEMORE

RIDING AT MILLBROOK: VIDEOS ABOUT OUR PROGRAM Izzy is an avid competitive rider with a desire to grow the sport at Millbrook, and her nearly four-minute video on the subject was the cornerstone of her CES project.

OWEN COLLINS

The video showcases Kildare Stables and introduces students to Millbrook’s riding program to answer common questions. Izzy narrated a tour of the barn, highlighting amenities appealing to both humans and horses. Included drone footage gives an awesome sense of the beauty and scope of Kildare, and her narration offers a glimpse into her personal connection to the farm.

SOLAR-POWERED RC CAR Fields of wind turbines sparked Owen’s interest in renewable energy, and his experience in STEM subjects at Millbrook inspired him to use his CES for further exploration. His CES began as an ambitious project to design and build a solar-powered go-cart. His final product, a solar-powered remotecontrolled car, required the same planning and skills but on a more manageable scale. Between the car’s solar panel and battery is a charge controller, a circuit board comprised of an assortment of resistors and capacitors that Owen soldered with precision and skill to make the car function. His CES was both a reflection of his time at Millbrook and a look forward, as he plans to major in mechanical engineering in college and focus on medical engineering and nanotechnology.

MOLLY KISSANE

EXPLORING, CREATING, AND DESTROYING: A PAINTING SERIES Molly’s CES led her to rethink her goals as an artist, including the role of art in her life at Millbrook and beyond. Having painted during all four years at Millbrook, she found working independently, outside of a class, to be the most challenging and exhilarating. For her CES, Molly worked on an eight-foot-high canvas to create an abstract piece with vibrant colors and forms. The sheer scale of the piece is as significant as any meaning to be discerned from its content, and Molly’s CES reinforced her love of abstract painting during a challenging year.

CES PROGRAM

GORDON LOCK

REMAIN IN LIGHT: A LIGHT AND SCULPTURE INSTALLATION This CES project transformed what is perhaps Millbrook’s most iconic space, the Flagler Memorial Chapel, into a peaceful, color-rich, and immersive art experience. Gordon, who explored light, color, and shape in artwork throughout his time at Millbrook, designed and built a lightbox that dominated the altar, replacing standard lightbulbs with multicolored LEDs. Changing combinations of color and intensity of light yielded endlessly varying and undeniably beautiful experiences for viewers.

JALIA MUSAH

MUGS AND BRACELETS TO SUPPORT MY LOCAL SCHOOL Through creativity, hard work, and her abiding positivity, Jalia Musah’s CES paid forward the opportunities afforded her at Millbrook. Jalia highly values education and is acutely aware of the economic hardships faced by many students in her native Ghana. At Millbrook, Jalia devised a way to help those back home by crafting and selling mugs along with bracelets sourced from Kenya; Millbrook School community members made purchases knowing that the proceeds from her beautifully crafted goods would have real benefits for Jalia’s local school.

JESS PIARD

MATERIAL GIRL Jess Piard came to Millbrook as a IIIrd former interested in basketball and drawing, but her CES project presents her Holbrook-made passion for photography and fashion and foretells her creative goals. Jess conceived of, coordinated, and executed multiple photo shoots on campus and then in New York City over spring break to build her portfolio and experience. An internship granted her exposure to industry professionals, and her work was widely published, a fantastic accomplishment in the crowded and competitive world of fashion. Jess plans to continue to study photography in college, where she says she will never, ever be without her camera.

EMMA SCHAAD

RED SAND PROJECT: TAKING ACTION AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING Emma Schaad’s CES was inspired by the work of Give Way To Freedom, a foundation started by her mother, Courtney Albert. To continue her mother’s advocacy, Emma invited Molly Gochman, founder of the Red Sand Project, to create a provocative art installation on campus. Students shook bright red sand into cracks on school pavements, and the resulting stark visual spiderwebs provoked conversation about ensuring people are “seen” (and not falling through the cracks) while raising awareness about a global human trafficking crisis.

Biz brought her ideas to life on the faces of student and faculty volunteers, sometimes in garish and exaggerated colors and other times with subtlety and grace. Natalie’s photo portraits were evocative and intense, challenging the viewer to look closely enough to consider the person beneath the makeup and see the photograph as both a record and a statement.

The Future of Productivity at Millbrook When Drew arrived at Millbrook as a IVth former, he quickly discovered he had a lot to learn about how to learn. In his CES he took a close look at the impact of technology on student focus and productivity and, particularly, how procrastination and distraction—from computers, apps, and the internet—are incredibly destructive to learning.

MillbrookEngage 2021 With equal parts enthusiasm and cautious optimism, we introduced the MillbrookEngage program to our eager Vth form families via a virtual Zoom meeting in November of 2020. By that time, it was clear—thanks to the courage, commitment, and trust on the part of all—that Millbrook had successfully re-opened school. However, the future still seemed a bit uncertain due to continuing pandemic-related concerns. We proceeded and prevailed, and our students quickly shared their enthusiasm for the MillbrookEngage program and its mission to carry forward the ideal of service— one of the school’s most important core values. Twenty students applied to participate. INTRODUCTION BY MillbrookEngage Program Director Trish Rexhouse

PRECIOUS ESIELEM Precious was searching for an internship related to her interest in the medical field, but her focus shifted once she connected with alumna Caroline (Bozorth) Sayan ’90. Caroline is the president of the board for Dress For Success Northern New Jersey, a non-profit that empowers women to achieve economic independence. They work with women entering the workforce and provide services free of charge, including skills training and work attire. Precious worked full time, off site on a range of communications projects and was inspired by the long-term impact Dress For Success has on clients.

OLIVIA BOUSCAUD Olivia joined the white-tailed deer project at the Cary Institute, a local environmental research facility in Millbrook, as a data intern. She analyzed video footage from 26 trail cameras scattered across hundreds of acres of land owned by the Cary Institute and recorded her observations of animals and their activities, focusing specifically on the noticeable attributes and habits of white-tailed deer crossing the cameras’ paths. Along with deer, Olivia observed bobcats, bears, coyotes, turkeys, and others. Olivia’s internship connected a love of animals sustained by her work as a Trevor Zoo curator with her interest in biomedical engineering and research, all in service of the vital conservation work happening right here in Dutchess County.

REVEL PHAN Revel worked for Pacific Links Foundation, a Vietnam-based non-profit focused on helping female victims of human trafficking, teaching English daily via Zoom to Vietnam-based clients of the organization. Revel is a Vietnamese speaker, and in teaching English to students with some proficiency, he was able to conduct lessons in a casual and conversational style while sharing some highlights of his life in New York City. As a longtime volunteer with Pacific Links, Revel plans to continue, and hopefully further, his connection as he heads to college to study international business.

FREDDY HAMILTON Freddy worked with Colorado Youth for a Change (CYC), a non-profit tasked with supporting disadvantaged and struggling high school students striving to earn their diplomas or GEDs. As part of his work, Freddy reviewed data on the correlation between early childhood education and later success in high school. He worked closely with CYC staff to identify student needs while gaining valuable experience in data analysis, communications, and writing, including penning articles for an annual report on giving. Freddy fulfilled his overarching goal of doing good in his hometown while building skills and gaining invaluable experience.

Retiring Faculty We shared gratitude and goodbyes in June with two outstanding members of Millbrook’s History Department.

MARK CLIZBE 1998-2021 By all accounts, Mark Clizbe brought history to life for students by demanding high-level critical thinking and introspection. As chair of the History Department for the entirety of his 23-year Millbrook tenure, Mr. Clizbe oversaw a dynamic group of faculty, always mindful of the department’s mission. “In our post-observation debriefs,” said Lindsay Peterson, incoming history department chair, “Mark would ask me questions to get me to reflect on my lesson; he did not tell me what to do or how to do it. In this way, Mark was an incredible coach.” Mr. Clizbe also challenged the students in his classes, asking them to connect the ceaseless march of contemporary events to historical precedent and guiding them to formulate and share their insights. Many of Millbrook’s highest achievers have called Mr. Clizbe their most influential teacher, crediting his high expectations with their drive to become engaged learners and thinkers. Along with his sections in U.S. History, Mr. Clizbe’s senior history electives—Dissent and Constitutional Law— were legendary in both scope and depth and always in high demand. Mr. Clizbe wore many hats, as boarding school teachers do, including coach and advisor. His coaching was notorious—for his love of sport and his passion on the basketball court and the baseball field. He was an advisor to many students, caring deeply about their success and always invested in their growth. Since 2014, he also wore the parent hat. Mark and his wife, Martha, chair of Millbrook’s Math Department, raised two “fac brats” and Millbrook graduates, Nathaniel ’21 and Amanda ’17, the latter a graduate of the University of Southern California and the former a freshman at Boston University. Even as he embarks on a new role at an educational non-profit in nearby Amenia, New York, Mr. Clizbe remains a presence at Millbrook. Whether cheering for the volleyball team in Wray Gymnasium or pounding the pavement on School Road, Mr. Clizbe’s enthusiasm for Millbrook endures.

BRAD HART 2011 - 2021 After many successful years in the world of finance, Brad Hart came to Millbrook to teach. History Department Chair Mark Clizbe had not an ounce of skepticism about the career-changer from Wall Street. “Brad did want a lifestyle change, and he did want to feel that he was making a difference. He also wanted to work,” said Mr. Clizbe. “He was changing careers, not down-shifting.” Like any educator, Mr. Hart’s desire to connect with kids and make a difference was strong; less commonly, his embrace of the sometimes unglamorous aspects of the job demonstrated his commitment to being a professional teacher. Mr. Hart not only embraced the realities and challenges of classroom teaching but engaged fully with the demands made of boarding school faculty members. He served as an advisor, dorm supervisor, and activity leader and coached soccer, golf, and lacrosse. Mr. Hart’s U.S. History and Modern World History classrooms were lively, and his economics courses were eye-opening and uniquely informed by his own experiences in banking and finance. Among his many success stories, Mr. Hart and his wife, Susan, served as surrogate parents to Ousseni Bouda ’19 during his time at Millbrook, and they continue to advise and support him at Stanford University. While Mr. Hart’s relationship with Ousseni is extraordinary, it is only one example of his impact on countless Millbrook students. In the words of Mark Clizbe: “To connect with kids is to confront them, make demands of them, tolerate and even appreciate their annoying habits. It’s to be present in their lives over the long haul.” Brad Hart certainly connected with Millbrook students, and their lives were better for it.

Teachers and Leaders BETTER BY DESIGN “There are some challenging conversations to be had with students, but those are often the most rewarding ones. In the the cry line at graduation there is inevitably the student who was in my office despairing in tears. They have some really tough moments and end up profoundly changed.” In September 2021, Jarratt Clarke began her second year as the assistant head of school for academics, a newly designed role in 2020 as Kathy Havard, longtime dean of faculty, returned full-time to the classroom. Previously, Ms. Havard oversaw all hiring and faculty development as well as the academic program—her plate was overflowing, especially as Millbrook’s enrollment grew over the past decade. In 2019-2020 Millbrook thoughtfully reexamined the structure of the academic office. Jasper Turner was hired as Millbrook’s new dean of faculty to focus entirely on hiring the best faculty and overseeing professional development. Ms. Clarke assumed overall administrative responsibility for the academic program. In her first year, she helped to launch a new academic schedule informed by brain science and developed by a faculty committee over the prior two years. Her efforts then shifted squarely to ensuring that Millbrook could offer our academic program in a pandemic, leaving little time to think about more significant programmatic changes. As our current classroom experience is far closer to normal, Ms. Clarke is beginning to consider the future of the academic program. “I am excited to have the time and the personnel to be thoughtful about what are we doing well and where might we improve. We have a great group of people—both in the academic office and more broadly with department heads and teachers—to figure out the best way to go about it. Working through the past year’s challenges with this group has shown me how resilient, thoughtful, creative, and hard-working they all are. I am thrilled for the opportunity to reflect on what we do well and to make changes, as needed, moving forward.”

MILLBROOK BLUE THROUGH AND THROUGH In his second year as Millbrook’s athletic director, alumnus Vinnie Sorriento ’96 is well-equipped to honor the legacy of Mustang sports while strengthening programs for the future. After graduating from the State University of New York at Cortlandt College and enjoying a six-year stint coaching hockey and teaching at Rumsey Hall, Vinnie returned to Millbrook in 2007 to teach math and live as a dorm head in Case Hall. He added head varsity hockey coach to his portfolio in 2009 and, always open to new challenges, became Millbrook’s dean of residential life in 2014. A chance to lead and make a difference across the school’s athletic programs was irresistible, and Vinnie moved into the director’s office in the Mills Athletic Center in the fall of 2020. His first year leading athletic programming was challenging for many reasons, especially the inherent unknowns in managing extensive programs and logistics at a boarding school during a pandemic. Vinnie seized every opportunity to encourage and support student-athletes and coaches, making the 2020-2021 seasons as successful and rewarding as possible. While most interscholastic competitions were canceled last year, he worked with coaches to ensure players were building fitness and honing individual skills. Millbrook’s solid cadre of faculty coaches also used their time on the home fields and courts to build team unity. With near 100% vaccination rates across independent school communities, more streamlined testing protocols, and hard-won experience gained last year, Vinnie is excited to bring to life his vision for growing and strengthening Mustang sports. While the school’s athletic culture is already undeniably robust, Vinnie’s plans include further supporting coaches and players by engaging in recruitment, practice planning, and personalized player and coach development.

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK AMANDA ALONGI Amanda Alongi joins Millbrook’s Athletic Department this year as an assistant athletic trainer. She brings many years of experience as the primary athletic trainer for the men’s soccer and women’s basketball and softball teams at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Avery played Division I lacrosse at Holy Cross College while earning her bachelor’s degree in psychology. She followed that with a master’s degree in public policy and law at Trinity College.

Student Life:

Traditionally Millbrook JJ Morrissey and Cora MacKenzie ’12 are two familiar faces in new roles this year. Both are serving in the Student Life Office—JJ as the dean of students and Cora as the assistant dean. As they plan and move forward in the new school year, re-embracing school traditions waylaid by COVID in 2020-2021, their focus is on meeting students’ needs and introducing many Millbrook rituals to both new and returning students. After several years in the Athletic Department as Millbrook’s head athletic trainer and assistant athletic director, Cora is eager to interact with student life in a new capacity. Likewise, JJ is looking forward to seeing Millbrook traditions lived out in full as we get back to what makes Millbrook special. This includes resuming in-person assemblies and chapel talks, forums, formal dinners, and hangouts in the Barn—all gatherings that build community. Both JJ and Cora embrace the idea of a triangle comprised of student, parent, and school. The triangle is strong because of the interdependent arrangement of its three sides. The Student Life Office seeks to maintain the health and integrity of these relationships, with student well-being and success at the apex. “Our goal is always to serve the students,” says JJ, “to give them a joyful community in which to learn and grow into their best selves. The entire child is the purview of student life.” Additionally, JJ and Cora see opportunity to support improvement in student interactions with adults and general conduct while broadly examining current school culture. “Strong school culture is a stabilizing factor, and when kids are heard and understood, they thrive,” says Cora.

Spotlight on Service:

ALUMNA KATHRYN SEIDENSTEIN ’94 Kathryn Seidenstein ’94 credits Millbrook with much of who she is today, and it is people like Kathryn who help make Millbrook what it is today. A mid-pandemic job change yielded some downtime, and Kathryn made the most of it with travel that included volunteer work on Millbrook’s campus. While there is an undeniable appeal to escaping New York City’s summer swelter for the Hudson Valley, for Kathryn it was no vacation. “During the pandemic, I suddenly had this extra time, and I felt like I could do something helpful and productive,” said Kathryn. Late last spring, she contacted Robert Anthony ’65 and Headmaster Drew Casertano and, when they took her up on her offer to help where needed, she soon had her work cut out for her. A zooie as a student and now a zooie for life, Kathryn began her spring session on campus at the Mill and the Trevor Zoo, assisting with events and large visitor groups and feeding and caring for the animals. She also worked with Millbrook Archivist Dan Cohen ’86 to organize and structure the school archives that are housed in the Flagler Memorial Library. “A lot of the passions I have now—giving back, connecting with people, caring for those who cannot care for themselves—were fostered at Millbrook. I feel very connected to Millbrook because of what it gave me, and those connections are still so strong,” Kathryn said. “I hope that Millbrook continues to turn out kids that do good and make an impact on their communities.” Now, as a managing director in human resources at Blackstone, Kathryn credits her time at Millbrook with the principles she finds critical to success: consciousness, caring, and community. Two of Kathryn’s strongest connections in the community are with Bill Hardy, who retired in 2020, and Reverend Cam Hardy. They both supported her during her time at the school helping build her confidence in her academic, personal, and athletic abilities; Kathryn left Millbrook as an honor roll student with a real sense of self. Volunteering for Millbrook is not new for Kathryn. She is a longtime class agent and would “do anything for Millbrook.” We thank her for exemplary service to the school and to students past, present, and future.

Spotlight on Service:

STEVEN LEWIS ’04 As part of a group of alumni in frequent contact with headmaster Jonathan Downs ’98 and DEI co-directors Prince Botchway and Reverend Cam Hardy, Steven Lewis ’04 has also made regular visits to campus to connect with current Black and Latinx students. He has never arrived empty-handed! With J’nelle Agee ’06, Steven curated and distributed gift bags for students of color intended to help them feel heard and connected. The bags included health and beauty products from Black-owned businesses, spices and seasonings to personalize their dining experience, and face masks from his own 1AND1 product line. Steven’s commitment of time and energy has included making himself accessible to current Black and Latinx Millbrook students as a resource and thoughtful listener. His willingness to engage with faculty and students alike has contributed to what he characterizes as a “night and day difference in racial awareness on campus.” Along with J’nelle and Xavier Van Meerbeek ’06, Steven has been part of an ongoing dialog with Millbrook faculty. “Millbrook has looked to us for support and ideas for change,” said Steven, “and for the school to listen and use what we had to say was very refreshing and encouraging.” Millbrook was a transformative experience for Steven, and he credits the lessons and values gleaned from his time on campus for the inspiration to give back. As a media and marketing entrepreneur, Steven recalls a Millbrook elective he took his VIth form year with Jim Heffernan. “I got the itch to be an entrepreneur from his class. The fact that he was a successful businessman who came to Millbrook to teach made a huge impression, and I learned more real-life business skills in his class than in any other place.” Steven also lives by words he often heard from Michael Fuller, his Millbrook basketball and lacrosse coach: character is who you are when no one is watching. Steven also credits Millbrook with instilling in him the self-confidence to speak and interact with anyone. “I made friends from Japan, Ghana, the West Coast, the South, all over,” he said, “and other people’s lives were, and still are, fascinating to me.” Striving for greater diversity and inclusiveness at Millbrook benefits everyone and is self-perpetuating. By making himself available to current Black and Latinx Millbrook students, Steven is working to create the kind of environment that helped him be comfortable in his skin in any situation, for the betterment of the school and the benefit of the students.

A FAMILIAR FACE IN A NEW PLACE

DAN SKOGLUND

Director of Leadership Giving school leadership and counseling/mental health respectively, and an offer at Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut, brought them back to live in an area they both love. As a senior associate director of admission, advisor, coach, and head dorm parent at Hotchkiss, Dan’s plate was extremely full in a school of 600 students. Both he and Elizabeth came to miss the intimate feeling of community that you can only get at a smaller school. Through inevitable Millbrook connections—Kevin Soja (former Millbrook dean of students and Hotchkiss alumnus) and Jonathan Downs ’98 (a classmate at Middlebury College and then newly named assistant head of school at Millbrook)—Dan learned that Millbrook was hiring a dean of students. “Being a dean of students at a boarding school is exceedingly challenging. Your hands are in everything, and you’re often supporting adolescents and their parents at low points in their experience. However, it’s incredibly rewarding helping kids learn from their failures and then seeing them Dan Skoglund is a boarding school professional through and through. Bringing his considerable talents to Millbrook in 2016, he arrived as our dean of students following the departure of Liz Morrison. Continuing in that role and taking on greater responsibility in 2019 as the assistant head for student life, Dan guided students and parents daily through the ups and downs of teenage life on a boarding school campus. Ready to focus on building a better future for our school, this fall he stepped seamlessly into a new role in Millbrook’s Alumni & Development Office as director of leadership giving. Dan began his career in finance, which laid the groundwork for this work in fundraising, but the ultimate preparation has been his extensive experience in almost every area of independent school life. He graduated from Tabor Academy, and it was a former Tabor teacher working at Berkshire School who eventually recruited Dan to teach economics and world history there while assisting in admissions and coaching ice hockey. Ambition brought Dan and his wife, Elizabeth, to the University of Pennsylvania for master’s degrees in

achieve great success through adversity.” But the lure of the Development Office was strong, and his work with students and parents prepared him well to discuss school priorities moving forward. Now, Dan engages in uplifting conversations with people who care about our school. Reaching out to parents and alumni, he is focused on making connections and learning about their priorities while helping to meet Millbrook’s capital needs. Dan is not shy about discussing Millbrook’s endowment and the need to grow it substantially to support salaries, benefits, housing, financial aid, and programs and facilities to match our burgeoning on-campus population. Dan’s experience, earned over 13 years of dorm life, coaching, teaching, and administration, informs and motivates his drive to continue Millbrook’s upward trajectory. With the passion and enthusiasm of an independent school insider, he is focused on what Millbrook can do better and how to bring continuing progress to fruition.
