MEET NOTES Tonight The No. 5 Utah gymnasts (8-1, 5-1 Pac-12) host No. 9 Georgia (5-7, 4-3 SEC) in “Senior Night with the Stars.” Quick Sticks The Utes will host the NCAA Salt Lake Regional on Apr. 2 in their final home meet of 2016 … Utah has tied for the Pac12 regular-season title with UCLA, both with 5-1 league marks. It is Utah’s third-straight Pac-12 regular-season title. Utah, the 2015 NCAA runner-up, is also the two-time defending Pac-12 Champion … Utah’s only loss was at UCLA by .025 (197.100-197.075) on Feb. 6 … Utah and Georgia are longstanding rivals with both teams claiming a record 10 national championships. Georgia holds a slim 2724-1 series advantage … Utah has topped 197.000 in the last six meets (2 home, 4 away), including a season-high 197.525 at Michigan on Mar. 4. 2016 Attendance Champs Utah, which is averaging 14,810 fans a home meet, is a virtual lock to secure its 32nd gymnastics national attendance title (and its 12th straight) tonight. The Utes remain in the running for a sixth all-sports women’s attendance title as well. In the lead is South Carolina basketball, which finished its season with an average attendance of 14,925. Utah needs to draw a standing-room crowd of 15,385 tonight to tie the Gamecocks for the 201516 title. Utah’s five all-sports women’s attendance titles to date came in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015. The Utes have exceeded the 15,000-seat capacity in the Huntsman Center three times this season with a season-high 15,550 (standing room capacity) on Jan. 23 against Oregon State. National Rankings A season-high 197.525 at Michigan last Friday elevated Utah one position in the national rankings to No. 5. Utah is tied for No. 7 on vault (49.235 regional qualifying score) and is No. 3 on bars (49.345), No. 5 on beam (49.250) and No. 7 on floor (49.400). Breanna Hughes is in the top 20 on three events and the all-around. She is tied for No. 9 on vault (9.90), 15th on floor (9.910) and 18th on bars (with Baely Rowe, 9.895). Hughes is No. 16 in the all-around (39.345). Maddy Stover is tied for No. 7 on beam (9.90), Kassandra Lopez is tied for 12th on bars (9.90) and Sabrina Schwab is tied for 17th on floor (9.905). Super Seniors Seniors Kailah Delaney, Breanna Hughes and Kassandra Lopez, all 9.90-plus scorers, will make their
final regular-season Huntsman Center appearances tonight. Hughes is scheduled to go all-around, while Lopez will compete on vault, beam and floor, and Delaney hopes to be in the vault and beam lineups. Delaney has competed just one routine (vault last week) in the last two meets due to a sore knee. Delaney and Lopez are in their fifth seasons, both having missed a year due to injury. Delaney has career highs of 9.975 on vault, 9.925 on beam and 9.90 on floor; Lopez has 9.925 career highs on bars and beam, and a 9.85 on vault; and Hughes has a 9.975 high on both floor and bars, a 9.90 on vault, a 9.875 on beam and a 39.650 career all-around best (all this year). Chalk Talk Utah enters its final regular season meet at home after beating three-straight top-15 opponents on the road (then-No. 12 Stanford, No. 14 California and No. 5 Michigan) … Three Utes have scored a 9.975 this season: Breanna Hughes on bars and floor, Maddy Stover on beam and Samantha Partyka on floor … Utes have won 28-of-36 individual event titles and six all-arounds … Ute winners: Hughes (15), Stover (5), Partyka (4), Baely Rowe (4), Kailah Delaney (3), Sabrina Schwab (3), Kari Lee (2) and Kassandra Lopez (2) … The Utes are 208-216 in hit routines (routines without a fall). The Utes hit all 24 routines at UCLA, at Stanford and at Michigan. They have counted a fall in one meet (on floor vs. Oregon State) … Gymnasts who have hit every routine are Partyka (28-28), Lopez (19-19), Schwab (18-18), MaKenna Merrell (1818) and Erika Muhaw (1-1). Ute Insider In addition to Kailah Delaney’s possible return to the beam lineup after two weeks out with injury, Samantha Partyka hopes to return to the vault lineup. Both will continue to be held out of floor until further notice … Utah has used a different lineup (either personnel or order of competitors) in all nine meets … Utes have won six Pac12 weekly awards: Sabrina Schwab has been the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week three times (Jan. 12, Feb. 2, Feb. 13), Breanna Hughes was Specialist of the Week on Jan. 19 and Mar. 1, and Rowe was Specialist of the Week on Jan. 26. Series Shorts Utah trails the all-time series with Georgia 24-27-1 … Utah leads 8-4 in Salt Lake City … The teams have split the last 10 decisions equally … Last season, Utah beat Georgia in the NCAA semifinals in advancing to the Super Six, after (continued on page 30)

Farden, Utah’s assistant coach for the previous five years, draws from 18 years of NCAA coaching experience. He was the head coach at Southeast Missouri State from 2004-09, where he compiled a 70-46 record and was the 2008 NCAA South Central Regional Coach of the Year and a four-time conference coach of the year. Farden continues to coach the uneven bars, his primary event since coming to Utah, and has also taken over as the lead vault coach. He assisted coaching floor in his first five seasons at Utah, when the bar and floor lineups produced 26 All-America awards, an NCAA champion, nine routines in the NCAA individual event finals, seven regional champions and six Pac-12 individual titles. JON M. HUNTSMAN CENTER
T
he most famous college gymnastics facility in the country, Utah’s Jon M. Huntsman Center has showcased more major collegiate gymnastics meets than any other venue. The Huntsman Center has hosted a record nine national championships—one AIAW and eight NCAA Championships: 1981 (AIAW), 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1994, 1999 and 2007. Other gymnastics events making Huntsman Center appearances include the 1979 USGF World Championships Trials, the 1980 and ’82 Championships of the USA, the 1993 World University Games Trials, 12 NCAA regional championships (most recently in 2012) and two Pac-12 Championships. Opened in 1969 on the southeast side of campus (elevation 4,657 feet), the 15,000-seat Huntsman Center is still in pristine condition. The facility underwent a $6 million renovation in the summer of 2014. The project included the installation of a super-grid ceiling structure, a state-of-the-art sound system, brighter and energy-efficient LED lighting in the arena and concourse, a maple wood floor, and updated graphics wrapping the walls of the lower bowl and mid-level concourse. Also calling the Huntsman Center home are the Ute men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball teams. The Huntsman Center
ranks third among the nation’s arenas for most NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games held (81). Perhaps the most legendary NCAA Tournament game of all time—the 1979 NCAA Championship game starring Larry Bird and Magic Johnson—was played in the Huntsman Center. TOP HUNTSMAN CENTER CROWDS
