MEET NOTES Tonight The Utah gymnasts (3-0, 1-0 Pac-12) host their first Monday meet in a decade at 6 p.m. vs. Arizona (2-1, 0-1 Pac-12). The Pac-12 Networks will televise the meet live. The evening features a fairytale-themed Family Night. Quick Sticks While Utah has hosted 80 Monday meets in its history, there have been just five Monday meets in the Huntsman Center in the last 20 years. Utah is 79-1 all-time in Monday home meets, winning its first 79 Monday meets before falling to Georgia in 2006 ... Tonight’s meet is the first of two this week for the Utes, who have a road meet at UCLA on Saturday at 2 p.m. MT. The UCLA meet will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks … Utah is 57-0 all-time vs. Arizona, which is under a new coach—former Stanford gymnast and assistant coach Tabitha Yim … Utah averaged 15,286 fans to its first two home meets in the 15,000-seat Huntsman Center. The standing-room crowd of 15,550 against Oregon State on Jan. 23 was the fourthlargest attended gymnastics meet in school history and Utah’s 15th crowd in excess of 15,000 all time (including both home meets this season). National Rankings Utah slipped one position to No. 7 in the national rankings last Monday (which were based on season average) after a 196.125-195.125 win over then No. 11 Oregon State on Jan. 23. Utah was ranked No. 3 on bars last Monday (49.292 average) after two weeks at No. 1. Utah’s best individual rankings were on bars, where Baely Rowe was ranked No. 4 with a 9.917 season average and Kassandra Lopez was No. 6 (9.892 average). Chalk Talk Senior Breanna Hughes, off to her best season as a Ute, leads the team with three wins, which is also her career win total … In the first three meets, Utah has won 11-of12 individual event titles and one all-around. There have been two double winners (Hughes and Kari Lee at SUU) … High scores this season are 9.90 on vault (Hughes twice), 9.95 on bars (Baely Rowe),9.925 on beam (Maddy Stover) and 9.925 on floor (Sabrina Schwab) … Ute winners: Hughes (3), Lee (2), Rowe (2), Schwab (2), Stover (2), Kailah Delaney (1), Kassandra Lopez (1) and Samantha Partyka (1) … The Utes are 67-72 in hit routines (routines without a fall). Gymnasts who have hit every routine are

Hughes (9-9), Partyka (9-9), Schwab (6-6), MaKenna Merrell (5-5), Delaney (5-5) and Lopez (4-4). Ute Insider Look for changes to every event lineup tonight. Floor exercise is the event most impacted by the changes, where MaKenna Merrell and Kailah Delaney enter the projected lineup as the first two competitors, Kari Lee moves from No. 5 to No. 3, and the last three competitors are Utah’s high scorers this season: Sabrina Schwab (9.925), Samantha Partyka (9.875) and Breanna Hughes (9.90) … Kassandra Lopez replaces Merrell in the beam lineup … Utah has two Pac-12 weekly award winners: Sabrina Schwab was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week on Jan. 12 and Breanna Hughes was the Pac12 Specialist of the Week on Jan. 19. Utah Co-Coaches Megan Marsden and Tom Farden are in their first season as a co-head coaching tandem. It is Marsden’s seventh year as Utah’s co-head coach and her 32nd year overall on the staff. Farden, Utah’s assistant coach for the past five seasons, is in his first year as its co-head coach. Marsden, the Pac-12 Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2015 (with Greg Marsden, who retired after 40 years as Utah’s head coach in April), has a 135-47-2 record in her seventh year as the co-coach. Farden, the head coach at Southwest Missouri State from 2004-09, is 3-0 at Utah and 73-46 overall. He was the 2008 NCAA South Central Region Coach of the Year and a four-time conference coach of the year. Nation’s Attendance Leader Utah is averaging 15,286 fans to its first two home meets. The standing-room crowd of 15,550 on Jan. 23 against Oregon State was the fourth-largest attended gymnastics meet in school history, Utah’s second sellout this season and its 15th crowd in excess of 15,000 all time. The Utes broke their own NCAA gymnastics attendance record in 2015, averaging 14,950 fans to their regular-season home meets. The Utes also broke the attendance record for a Pac12 Championship in 2015, drawing a two-session total of 23,568 and setting the single-session mark with 14,402 spectators. Utah, which attracted an NCAA single-meet gymnastics crowd of 16,019 against Michigan, captured its fifth all-women’s sports attendance title in 2015 and its 31st gymnastics attendance crown. Utah owns every NCAA (continued on page 30)

JON M. HUNTSMAN CENTER

T

he most famous college gymnastics facility in the country, Utah’s Jon M. Huntsman Center has showcased more major collegiate gymnastics meets than any other venue. The Huntsman Center has hosted a record nine national championships—one AIAW and eight NCAA Championships: 1981 (AIAW), 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1994, 1999 and 2007. Other gymnastics events making Huntsman Center appearances include the 1979 USGF World Championships Trials, the 1980 and ’82 Championships of the USA, the 1993 World University Games Trials, 12 NCAA regional championships (most recently in 2012) and two Pac-12 Championships. Opened in 1969 on the southeast side of campus (elevation 4,657 feet), the 15,000-seat Huntsman Center is still in pristine condition. The facility underwent a $6 million renovation in the summer of 2014. The project included the installation of a super-grid ceiling structure, a state-of-the-art sound system, brighter and energy-efficient LED lighting in the arena and concourse, a maple wood floor, and updated graphics wrapping the walls of the lower bowl and mid-level concourse. Also calling the Huntsman Center home are the Ute men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball teams. The Huntsman Center

ranks third among the nation’s arenas for most NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games held (81). Perhaps the most legendary NCAA Tournament game of all time—the 1979 NCAA Championship game starring Larry Bird and Magic Johnson—was played in the Huntsman Center. TOP HUNTSMAN CENTER CROWDS
