Meet Notes Tonight The No. 4 Utah gymnasts (8-3, 5-1 Pac-12) host No. 20 Georgia (4-8, 3-4 SEC) in the final regular season meet at 7:30 p.m. The two programs are tied for the most all-time national team titles with 10. “Senior Night with the Stars” will celebrate three Ute seniors making their final regular season appearance in the Huntsman Center: Tiffani Lewis, Erika Muhaw and Maddy Stover. The meet will be televised on ESPNU and broadcast on ESPN 700 radio. Fanfare The Ute gymnasts, who are averaging 15,121 fans at home, need a crowd of just 7,500 vs. Georgia to win their eighth all-sports women’s attendance title over South Carolina women’s basketball. Utah gymnastics was the NCAA’s all-sport attendance champion for women in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 … The Utes cannot reach their school attendance record of 15,244 set a year ago, but 14,265 fans tonight will set the second-best attendance mark in school and NCAA gymnastics history. In the Rankings The Utes stayed at No. 4 for the fourth straight week in the new national rankings with a 197.415 Regional Qualifying Score (RQS). The top six stayed unchanged from a week ago with Oklahoma (197.995 RQS) No. 1, followed by LSU (197.755), UCLA (197.725), Utah (197.415), Florida (197.365) and Alabama (197.120). Utah’s event rankings are No. 4 on vault (49.395), No. 6 on bars (49.310), No. 9 on beam (49.275) and No. 4 on floor (49.485). MyKayla Skinner moved up to No. 3 in the allaround (39.665 RQS) and is No. 5 on vault (9.930), No. 10T on bars (9.915), No. 17T on beam (9.900) and No. 5 on floor (9.945). MaKenna Merrell-Giles is tied for No. 8 in the all-around (39.535), tied for No. 9 on vault (9.905) and tied for No. 8 on floor (9.930). The national rankings are on RQS for the remainder of the season (starting on Feb. 26). The RQS is calculated by taking a team or individual’s six best regular-season-meet scores—three of which must be on the road—eliminating the high score and averaging the remaining five. Quick Sticks The Utes are looking to snap a two-meet losing streak— the first time they have lost back-to-back dual meets

4|

since 2012 … The Utes have not competed at home in over a month with three road meets (UCLA, California and Michigan) and a bye since Feb. 9 … Utah is 4-0 in the Huntsman Center this season with wins over BYU, Oregon State, Washington and Arizona State … Utah concluded its Pac-12 regular season with a 5-1 league mark. Chalk Talk Utes have won five Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week citations: MyKayla Skinner on Jan. 9, Jan. 16, Feb. 13 and Feb. 20 and MaKenna Merrell-Giles on Feb. 6 … The Utes have hit 209-of-216 routines, including 24-of-24 routines in four meets (most recently at Michigan on Mar. 10) … Ute individual winners are: Skinner (25), Merrell-Giles (11), Kari Lee (4), Tiffani Lewis (2), Kim Tessen (2) and Sydney Soloski (1) … Gymnasts who have hit every routine without a fall are: Skinner (34-34), Lewis (2727), Alexia Burch (8-8), Maddy Stover (9-9), Shannon McNatt (2-2) and Lauren Wong (1-1). Ute Insider Kim Tessen’s status is day to day due to a shoulder injury. Tessen, a 9.90 or better scorer on vault and bars, did not compete on bars last week at Michigan … Alexia Burch (knee) will be out for a second straight week. She hopes to return to the beam lineup for the Pac-12 Championship … Utah has four 39.500 or better all-arounders: MyKayla Skinner (39.725 season best), MaKenna Merrell-Giles (39.675), Kari Lee (39.500) and Missy Reinstadtler (39.500) … The freshman class is playing a bigger role as the season progresses. Burch competed on three events vs. California on Feb. 25, Sydney Soloski stepped in on two events vs. Michigan on March 10 and Lauren Wong made her college debut on bars vs. Michigan on March 10. The freshman class has combined to hit 17 of 18 routines … Merrell-Giles has received the only 10.0 by a Ute this season—on vault vs. Washington on Feb. 3. Merrell-Giles and Skinner both have a 9.975 on floor—Skinner twice. Next Up Utah competes in the Pac-12 Championship in Tucson, Ariz., on Saturday, March 24. The Utes will host one of six NCAA Regionals on Saturday, April 7.

Jon M. Huntsman Center

T

he most famous college gymnastics facility in the country, Utah’s Jon M. Huntsman Center has showcased more major collegiate gymnastics meets than any other venue. The Huntsman Center has hosted a record nine national championships—one AIAW and eight NCAA Championships: 1981 (AIAW), 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1994, 1999 and 2007. Other gymnastics events making Huntsman Center appearances include the 1979 USGF World Championships Trials, the 1980 and ’82 Championships of the USA, the 1993 World University Games Trials, 13 NCAA regional championships (most recently in 2016) and two Pac-12 Championships. Opened in 1969 on the southeast side of campus (elevation 4,657 feet), the 15,000-seat Huntsman Center is still in pristine condition. The facility underwent a $6 million renovation in 2014. The project included the installation of a supergrid ceiling structure, a state-of-the-art sound system, brighter and energy-efficient LED lighting in the arena and concourse, a maple wood floor, and updated graphics wrapping the walls of the lower bowl and mid-level concourse. New videoboards were installed last fall at a cost of $4.1 million. Also calling the Huntsman Center home are the Ute men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball teams. The Huntsman Center ranks third among the nation’s arenas for most NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games held (81). Perhaps the most legendary NCAA 20 |

Tournament game of all time—the 1979 NCAA Championship game starring Larry Bird and Magic Johnson—was played in the Huntsman Center.
