UTAH STATE COACHING CHANGES FOR 2015 Utah State’s coaching staff had two changes during the off-season as third-year head coach Matt Wells hired Josh Heupel as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, and Kevin Clune as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Heupel replaces Kevin McGiven, who was named the quarterbacks coach at Oregon State, while Clune replaces Todd Orlando, who was named the defensive coordinator at Houston. UTAH STATE ONE OF JUST SEVEN PROGRAMS WITH NEW COORDINATORS Utah State is one of just seven FBS programs to have new offensive and defensive coordinators for the 2015 season, despite having the same head coach as the previous year, along with Bowling Green, Central Florida, Hawai’i, New Mexico State, Utah and Vanderbilt. UTAH STATE’S DEFENSE AMONG THE BEST IN THE NATION • Utah State is one of just five defenses nationally to hold opposing offenses under five yards per play the last three years, along with Alabama, Stanford, TCU and Wisconsin. Over the past three seasons, USU’s opponents have averaged just 4.55 yards per offensive play. • Utah State has the fourth-best rushing defense nationally over the past four seasons allowing just 3.13 yards per carry, trailing only Alabama (2.85 ypc), Michigan State (3.00 ypc) and Stanford (3.03 ypc). • Utah State is one of just three teams to rank among the top 12 nationally in scoring defense in each of the past three seasons along with Alabama and Stanford as USU allowed 15.4 points per game in 2012 and 17.1 points per game in 2013 to rank seventh nationally both seasons, and 19.7 points per game in 2014 to rank 12th nationally. CHUCKIE KEETON TO START FIFTH-STRAIGHT SEASON OPENER Utah State redshirt senior QB Chuckie Keeton will start his fifth-straight season opener against Southern Utah (Sept. 3) and will become one of just two FBS quarterbacks to ever start five season openers, along with Tulsa’s T.J Rubley (1987-91). Overall, Keeton is the second-winningest QB in school history with his 19 victories, trailing Tony Adams (1970-72), who won 22 games and ahead of John Pappas (1966-68), who won 18 games. SENIOR DEFENSIVE LINEMAN HAS BECOME THE CORNERSTONE OF UTAH STATE’S DEFENSE by Wade Denniston, USU Athletic Media Relations
JORDAN
NIELSEN During their run of playing in four straight bowl games and winning three of them, both of which are school records, the Utah State Aggies have established themselves as an elite defensive team. Case in point: The Aggies finished the 2014 campaign ranked among the top-30 defenses in the nation in 10 categories, including ranking first in the Mountain West and 12th in the nation in scoring defense at 19.7 points per game. Utah State also ranked first in the MW and fourth in the nation in both sacks (3.57 pg) and tackles for loss (8.1 pg). One of the driving forces behind Utah State’s success on that side of the ball has been the play of senior defensive end Jordan Nielsen, who has become the cornerstone of the defense. “Jordan is that cornerstone for our front right now,” said second-year defensive line coach Ikaika Malloe. “We tease him because he’s the grandfather and he’s played since his redshirt freshman year. He’s the one guy that can really line up all 11 people if you had a test for him. He’s kind of been controlling my room and is the middle man between the D-Line and myself, and he tells me what the temperature is. He’s really vital for our success.” Nielsen, a former standout at Sky View High School (Smithfield, Utah), redshirted his first season at Utah State in 2011. Since then, the 6-foot-5, 275-pounder has not missed a game, playing in 41 straight and helping the Aggies amass a 30-11 overall record. “I’ve stayed healthy, which has kept me in every game so far and then my care-factor has been huge,” Nielsen said of his durability. “Ever since my redshirt freshman season, I have gone all out just trying to earn a spot on the team, so it was just hard work for me.” All that hard work has paid off for Nielsen. The former Region 5 Defensive MVP at Sky View started all 14 games for the Aggies as a junior last season and earned honorable mention all-Mountain West honors as he finished the season with 53 tackles, including 7.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. But numbers don’t matter to Nielsen. Just like the mantra of the Oakland Raiders, all he wants to do is win. “Team-wise, it’s to win the Mountain West championship,” said Nielsen, when asked what his goals were for his senior season. “Individual-wise, it’s to never take a play off and come out like every play is my last. I’m going to go hard no matter what. I don’t set any stats or anything like that. I’m just there to do my job and play hard.” For his career, Nielsen has recorded 123 total tackles, including 17.0 tackles for loss and 9.0
8
® sacks, to go along with three pass breakups and two fumble recoveries. He recorded a career-high seven tackles in Utah State’s 41-7 victory over San José State on Nov. 21, 2014. “He keeps me on point of what’s going on and keeping me honest on our details,” Malloe said. “He’s very detail-oriented, sometimes to a fault, but for me it’s a blessing. Things that I sometimes could overlook because of schematic issues, he will constantly talk about technique. “Expect great things from him. He’s going to have a great senior year. You’ll see him on base, on lightning, on all the packages that we have. I expect a really good season from him.” Nielsen is more than ready to shoulder the bulk of the defensive line’s workload this season, especially when you consider the Aggies will be without the services of senior nose guard Travis Seefeldt following a June 26 car accident that left him hospitalized for nearly two weeks. Nielsen and Seefeldt, along with a few other teammates and friends, were returning to Logan from an outing at Newton Reservoir, a popular recreational area in Cache Valley, in separate vehicles. The Chevy Tahoe driven by Seefeldt was hit on the driver’s side by a semi-truck loaded with 52,000 pounds of milk. The truck pushed the Tahoe more than 75 yards before the two vehicles finally came to rest. Two cars behind the one driven by Seefeldt, Nielsen was one of the first people to arrive at the scene of the crash. Being the tremendous leader that he is, Nielsen did his best to try and keep everyone calm, as well as help the injured athletes in the Tahoe. “We were just trying to keep everyone calm,” Nielsen said. “There were like five of us trying to pull doors off and those doors were not budging. We got one guy out the window and just had him relaxed, and then we were just keeping everyone relaxed and trying to keep them awake and talking until all the ambulances and paramedics arrived.” Senior defensive lineman John Taylor, redshirt junior defensive lineman Edmund Faimalo, redshirt freshman defensive lineman Adewale Adeoye and former softball player Sarah Vasquez were also injured in the crash. Nielsen knows the outcome of the accident could have been much worse. “It showed me to live every day because you never know when it’s going to be your last,” Nielsen said. “Everyone is blessed to still be alive, but that was just hard to see. It was hard to see my brothers being in the car. Everyone is blessed, we’re all blessed, so just live each day.”
Growing up just a stone’s throw from Maverik Stadium, Nielsen has been an Aggie fan all his life. The fact the native of Lewiston gets to play for Utah State is just the icing on the cake. “I remember when I was 8 or 9 years old going to Aggie camps and stuff like that,” said Nielsen, who enjoys riding and breaking horses. “The players were like, ‘Hey bud,’ and just talking to me. I’m one of the Aggie players now and I get to do that to the young kids in the valley and they look up to us.” The son of John and Teresa Nielsen doesn’t just excel in football. He also takes great pride in his academics. After all, Nielsen, who has earned academic all-WAC/Mountain West honors the past three seasons, graduated in the spring of 2015 with a degree in human movement science and he is currently working on a second bachelor’s degree in biology. “His mind,” said Malloe, when asked what Nielsen’s greatest strength is. “He has no boundaries and I’m not talking about just being smart and knowing the package. I try to push him mentally and it doesn’t faze him at all. His mind is really strong.”

ICON SPORTS PERFORMANCE CENTER
Completed in June 2013, Utah State’s new $6.5 million, 26,329 squarefoot ICON Sports Performance Center features areas for weight training, cardiovascular workouts and speed and agility training, as well as offices for staff. Built on existing university property at the northwest corner of Maverik Stadium, the state-of-the-art multi-level facility alleviated overcrowding in the previous 5,800 square-foot strength and conditioning center and accommodates almost 400 student-athletes from 16 sports programs.

The ICON Sports Performance Center is the largest such facility in the Mountain West Conference and rivals any strength and conditioning complex in the country. Of the schools Utah State competes against in the MW, Fresno State currently has the second-largest strength and conditioning center(s) at 12,500 square feet, followed by Air Force (12,000 sq. ft.), Boise State (12,000 sq. ft.), Wyoming (11,100 sq. ft.), Hawai`i (10,000 sq. ft.), New Mexico (10,000 sq. ft.), Colorado State (10,000 sq. ft.), San JosĂŠ State (10,000 sq. ft.), UNLV (8,200 sq. ft.) and Nevada (8,000 sq. ft.).

ALMA MATER HYMN Across the Quad at eventide, as shadows softly fall, The tower of Old Main appears and peace rests over all. The lighted “A” upon the hill stands out against the blue; Oh, Alma Mater, Utah State, my heart sings out to you. And through the years as time rolls on, and student friendships grow, We’ll ne’er forget the joys we had, those days we used to know. Thy mem’ries ever will be new, thy friends be ever true; Oh, Alma Mater, Utah State, my heart sings out to you.

HEAD COACH MATT WELLS
MATT WELLS HEAD COACH UTAH STATE, 1996
2013 Mountain West Coach of the Year
Third Season as Utah State Head Coach (19-9 Overall,13-3 Mountain West) Fifth Season Overall at Utah State Matt Wells has wasted little time putting his stamp on the Aggie football program as head coach, as Utah State is 19-9 during his two years at the helm, including a 13-3 Mountain West record. Those 19 wins are a school-record by a USU coach in his first two seasons and he already ranks as the 11th-winningest coach in school history, while his 67.9 winning percentage ranks second all-time in school history with a minimum of 15 games coached. During his four years at Utah State, which includes two years as an assistant, Wells has been part of a program that has played in four-straight bowl games and won three-straight bowls, both of which are school records, while posting a 37-17 record. Furthermore, Utah State is one of just four programs to win 30 games and record three bowl victories in the past three seasons joining Clemson, Michigan State and Oregon. During the 2014 season, Wells led Utah State to 10 wins to rank as the second-most in school history behind the 2012 team that finished with an 11-2 record. USU also played in its fourth-straight bowl game in 2014 and won its third-straight bowl. In his second year as Utah State’s head coach, Wells mentored 15 players who earned 16 allMountain West honors, which were the most in the league and tied for the third-most in school history.
Wells also mentored two All-Americans in 2014 in Zach Vigil and Jalen Davis. Vigil was named an All-American by four different publications, including being named a USA Today Sports second-team All-American, while Davis was named a true freshman All-American by 247Sports. Along with earning All-American honors, Vigil was also named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year. In his first season as head coach, Wells led Utah State to the inaugural Mountain West Championship game after winning the Mountain Division of the conference with a 7-1 record in 2013. Wells also led Utah State to just its third-ever bowl victory as it posted a 21-14 win against No. 24 Northern Illinois in the 2013 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. For his efforts, Wells was named the 2013 Mountain West Coach of the Year as he set the school record for wins by a first-year head coach. The Aggies finished the season with a 9-5 record, tying the 1960 and 1961 teams for the second-most wins in school history at the time. Overall, Wells is the fifth USU coach in school history to garner conference coach of the year honors along with Bruce Snyder (1978), Chuck Shelton (1991), John L. Smith (1997) and Gary Andersen (2012). Wells is also the fourth individual to earn
MW Coach of the Year honors in his first season along with BYU’s Gary Crowton (2001), Utah’s Urban Meyer (2003) and Air Force’s Troy Calhoun (2007). During his first year as Utah State’s head coach, Wells mentored 14 Aggies who earned various allMountain West honors, including three All-Americans as Tyler Larsen was named a second-team AllAmerican by USA Today Sports, Nevin Lawson was named a third-team All-American by College Sports Madness, and Kyler Fackrell was named an honorable mention Sophomore All-American by College Football News. Wells also coached a school-record four players who were invited and participated in the 2014 NFL Combine in Larsen, Lawson, Maurice Alexander and D.J. Tialavea, while a total of 16 players from the 2013 and 2014 rosters were invited to NFL/CFL camps, including Alexander (St. Louis Rams) and Lawson (Detroit Lions), who were both selected in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT MATT WELLS... Gary Andersen, Oregon State Head Football Coach: “I’m very happy for Coach Wells and the success that Utah State has continued to have under his leadership. He takes care of kids both on and off the field and has surrounded himself with a staff that does the same. I look forward to seeing more of the same out of the Aggies in the future.” Zach Vigil, Linebacker, Miami Dolphins: “Coach Wells is a true family man. You can see that in the way he treats his immediate family, coaches and his players.”
12
The Wells Family (L-R): Ella, Matt, Wyatt, Jenn, Jadyn.
Ken Niumatalolo, Navy Head Football Coach: “It doesn’t surprise me at all how well Matt is doing as a head coach. I knew Matt when he first started coaching almost 20 years ago, and I knew then that he had a very bright future in this profession. Sustained success in any profession or business is hard, especially in the ultra competitive world of DI college football. Not only has Utah State continued their success under Matt’s leadership, they have gotten better and are a legit MWC title contender every year now under Matt.”

Wells, who is the 17th-youngest head coach at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level and one of 14 coaches to lead his alma mater, is just the second Utah State graduate to be appointed its head football coach joining Chris Pella, who graduated from USU in 1965 and coached the Aggies from 1983-85. Prior to being named the head coach at his alma mater, Wells spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Utah State, including serving as the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach during the 2012 campaign. In 2011, Wells coached USU’s quarterbacks and was the team’s recruiting coordinator. As offensive coordinator in 2012, Utah State concluded its most successful season in school history as it went 11-2 and set school records for wins (11) and home wins (6), while being nationally ranked in the Associated Press poll for three-straight weeks for the first time in school history. USU also won its first outright conference championship since 1936 during the 2012 campaign and just its third in school history joining the 1921 and 1936 teams that both won Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles. All-time, Utah State has won or shared 11 league championships. As offensive coordinator in 2012, Wells directed an Aggie offense that set single-season school records for total points (454), total offense (6,108 yards), completions (285) and total yards per game (469.8), while ranking second in points per game (34.9) and total passing yards (3,445). Nationally, Utah State’s 2012 offense ranked second in the Western Athletic Conference and 23rd in the country in total offense (469.8 ypg), second in the WAC and 18th in the nation in passing efficiency (153.21), second in the WAC and 25th in the nation in rushing offense (204.8 ypg), third in the WAC and 31st in the nation in sacks allowed (1.38 pg), third in the WAC and 33rd in the nation in scoring offense (34.9 ppg), and third in the WAC and 39th in the nation in passing offense (265.0 ypg). Under Wells, Utah State finished the 2012 season scoring 38 or more points in each of its final seven games, bettering the previous school record of 38-plus points in three-straight games accomplished six times and most recently in 2000. In 2012, Wells coached current Aggie senior quarterback Chuckie Keeton, who earned first-team all-WAC honors after setting single-season school records for touchdown passes (27), passing yards (3,373), completion percentage (.676), completions (275) and total offense (3,992 yards). Keeton also earned WAC Offensive Player of the Week honors four times in 2012, which is a singleseason school record. Under Wells’ tutelage, Keeton has emerged as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation and currently ranks first in school history in career completion percentage (.654), second in career touchdown passes (58), second in career completions (568), third in career total offense (7,621 yards), third in career passing yardage (6,387), fourth in career passing attempts (869) and 20th in career rushing yards (1,234). As the quarterbacks coach in 2011, Wells helped Utah State’s offense establish then-school records for total offense (5,945 yards), rushing yards (3,675), total points (437) and total touchdowns (60). Wells, a former Aggie quarterback and three-year letterwinner from 1994-96, was a member of two conference championship teams as a student-athlete as he was a redshirt freshman in 1993 when Utah State tied for first in the Big West Conference and defeated Ball State, 42-33, in the Las Vegas Bowl for its first-ever bowl win. As a senior in 1996, Wells helped USU to another share of the Big West Conference title. Wells, who has been a part of eight bowl teams and two conference championships during his coaching career, came to Utah State after two coaching stints at New Mexico, serving as the Lobos’ wide receivers and kickoff return unit coach in 2010 and wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator from 2007 to 2008. In 2009, Wells served as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Louisville. Prior to his first stint at New Mexico, Wells spent five years (2002-06) as the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Tulsa and five years at the U.S. Naval Academy (1997-2001) as its quarterbacks coach, fullbacks coach and wide receivers coach, while also serving as the junior varsity head coach and offensive coordinator for three years. Wells, a native of Sallisaw, Okla., received his bachelor’s degree in business marketing from Utah State in 1996, graduating cum laude. He and his wife Jen have two daughters, Jadyn (12) and Ella (9), and one son, Wyatt (6). His brother, Luke, is Utah State’s co-offensive coordinator, tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator.

ADMINISTRATION STAN ALBRECHT
UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT Stan L. Albrecht was named Utah State University’s 15th president and assumed his new position on Feb. 1, 2005. At the time of the announcement, Albrecht was serving as executive vice president and provost at Utah State, a position he held since 2001. He previously served as its dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences from 1998-2001. Albrecht has had many successes during his tenure as president. Under his leadership, the university launched a comprehensive fundraising campaign that raised $500 million at its completion in October of 2012. Undergraduate Kathryn “Katie” Sweet is a 2015 Goldwater Scholar and, for the second consecutive year, student David Griffin received honorable mention in a prestigious national competition that recognizes outstanding achievements in science and mathematics. With this year’s honorees, USU boasts 24 Goldwater Scholars and 12 honorable mention recipients since 1998. Changes on campus are happening as well. Ground was broken for the new, state-ofthe-art Huntsman Hall, a $42 million, 117,000-square-foot addition that will wrap around the south and west sides of the George S. Eccles Business Building. Jon M. Huntsman, Sr. is the lead donor for the new building, scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2015. And Jon M. Huntsman School of Business alum Jeffrey Clark and his wife, Bonnie Clark, have provided a $6 million leadership gift to help establish the Jeffrey D. Clark Center for Entrepreneurship in that college. Students will also be excited that construction is well under way on the USU Student Recreation & Wellness Center (SRWC) building. USU students voted in favor of a new recreation and wellness center in the spring of 2012, but the building has been a work in progress for nearly a decade. Students will have full access to the building in fall 2015, which is the anticipated completion date. These many notable accomplishments indicate that USU is on par with some of the leading institutions for higher education in the nation and does not go unnoticed. Prior to his arrival at Utah State, Albrecht served as an administrator and professor at the University of Florida from 1993-98. He also served for 18 years at Brigham Young University (1974-92), including three years as academic vice president and associate provost. He began his career as an assistant professor of sociology at Utah State University in 1970 through 1974. A sociologist, Albrecht has written extensively, including as a co-author of the textbooks Social Psychology and Social Science Research Methods, both published by Prentice-Hall. He has authored numerous scholarly papers on a wide range of topics, including the environment, energy development and rural health. Albrecht received his doctorate from Washington State University in 1970, a master’s degree from Washington State University in 1968 and bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in 1966. All three degrees were in sociology. He is a member of the Science Committee for the Minerals Management Service of the U.S. Department of Interior. He has served as a council member of the Society for Human Ecology and as vice president of the Rural Sociological Society. Albrecht is married to Joyce Albrecht, Utah State’s Director of Stewardship Programs.

JOHN HARTWELL VICE PRESIDENT AND ATHLETICS DIRECTOR
John Hartwell was named Utah State’s Vice President and Director of Athletics on June 2, 2015. Hartwell comes to Utah State after spending the past three years as the Athletics Director at Troy, where he laid the groundwork for the future of Trojan Athletics by spearheading several significant upgrades to its athletic facilities, including the addition of a new $2 million practice facility for the golf teams, a $3 million renovation and expansion of the softball facility and a $2.1 million improvement to Veterans Memorial Stadium, while also securing funding for lights to be installed at the soccer and track complex. Hartwell also unveiled the North End Zone Project for Veterans Memorial Stadium, a $20 million project that will be the new home for Trojan football. During the 2014-15 academic year, five Troy programs competed in postseason play, highlighted by a pair of Sun Belt Conference championships by the women’s golf and men’s tennis teams, while the women’s basketball team won 20 games for the first time since 1996-97 and made just its second postseason appearance in school history. Within the past year, three of Hartwell’s new coaching hires have been named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year. Under Hartwell, Troy Athletics saw a significant enhancement in fundraising and external relations as he completely overhauled Troy’s External Affairs division of the Athletics Department to increase revenues and enhance the fan and game day experience. As part of this makeover was the creation of a new external model, which included the addition of a Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs; bringing corporate sponsorships in house with a partnership with Rockbridge Sports Group; and the development of the Troy Affinity Program to further engage Troy students in athletics. Hartwell’s strong business background also proved to be valuable at Troy as he negotiated a new footwear and apparel deal with Adidas, while also securing home-and-home football games with Duke and North Carolina State in addition to yielding a home basketball game with Mississippi. Hartwell’s tenure at Troy also saw a record number of student-athletes earn a 3.0 grade-point-average, an upward trend in APR scores and additional staff positions in Troy’s academic support department. During the 2014-15 academic year, Troy student-athletes finished with a 3.01 cumulative grade-point-average and over 57 percent of Troy’s studentathletes had a 3.0 GPA or higher. At Troy, Hartwell served on the NCAA Division I Basketball Issues Committee, the Division I-A Board of Trustees Executive Committee, and the NCAA Division I Council as the Sun Belt Conference representative. He has also been an instructor at the Division I-A Institute for aspiring athletic directors the past two years. Prior to being the Director of Athletics at Troy, Hartwell spent nine-plus years at the University of Mississippi, where he was the Senior Executive Associate Athletics Director, serving as the number two administrator. At Ole Miss, Hartwell managed the growth of the Rebels’ athletic budget from $26 million in the 2003 fiscal year to over $47 million in the 2012 fiscal year. A 1987 graduate of The Citadel, the 50-year old Hartwell spent four-plus years as a certified public accountant with Ernst & Young before returning to his alma mater to serve as the Director of Internal Audit in 1991. From 1994 to 1997, he was in private business as the Chief Financial Officer for a $36 million beverage distributor on the South Carolina coast. Hartwell’s direct experience in athletics administration began as the Assistant Athletics Director for Business at Georgia State in 1997 and he was promoted to Associate Athletics Director for Internal Affairs in 1999. While at Georgia State, Hartwell earned a master’s degree in sports administration. Athletics has always been a big part of Hartwell’s life, starting in high school where he was an all-state basketball selection at UMS-Wright in Mobile, Ala. The 6-foot-7 forward was also a three-year starter at The Citadel. Hartwell is married to Dr. Heather Seale Hartwell, and they have two daughters, Lauren (6) and Madison (3). Hartwell also has a 23-year old son, Hunter, a Vanderbilt graduate who works for Deloitte Consulting.

2015 UTAH STATE VOLLEYBALL SEASON OUTLOOK
Front Row (L-R): Hannah Gleason, Erica Moscoso, Maddie Day, Kassidy Johnson, Tasia Taylor. Back Row (L-R): Lauren Anderson, Kaylie Kamalu, Carly Lenzen, Kayla DeCoursey, Hannah Smith, Lauren O’Brien, Simone Gibeau, Rachel Gale.
Utah State volleyball returned a roster full of seniors in 2014, but the opposite will hold true for the 2015 campaign as the Aggies will not have a senior on the roster. The turnover came by way of five graduating seniors and junior opposite Elle Brainard, who graduated early. “We are going to be young, experience-wise, and we’ll have to catch up quick in the preseason,” head coach Grayson DuBose said. “We return a lot of players in our system, but not a lot with match experience.” The most experienced returners will include junior outside hitter Kaylie Kamalu and junior defensive specialist Hannah Gleason, who combined for 27 starts last season. Kamalu finished third on the team in kills in 2014, wrapping up the year with 232 and logging 2.64 per set. Gleason appeared in every match during the year, starting at libero as the season was drawing to a close. Gleason finished fourth on the team with 243 digs, averaging 2.13 per set and finished third on the team with 24 service aces. “Without the seniors, we’ll lead by committee this year,” DuBose said of leadership. “I’m sure throughout the season we’ll have players that will step up and lead at different times.” Sophomore middle Hannah Smith also recorded valuable starting experience last season, appearing in 23 matches with 22 starts and finishing second in the conference with 1.36 blocks per set during the year. The Utah State roster also includes eight returning letterwinners that have all logged sets in NCAA competition. The group of returners includes sophomore outside Rachel Gale, who was a member of the Mountain West All-Stars team that took part in the Global Volleyball Challenge in Europe over the summer. The team finished third at the tournament and provided valuable experience for Gale. The Pleasant Grove product will also be the second-best attacker returning for the Aggies after totaling 91 kills during the 2014 season. Sophomore Kayla DeCoursey will also provide depth to the outside, having appeared in 11 matches last year and logging 35 kills. Utah State will have a new setter for the first time in four years with the departure of Paige Neves, a four-
46
® year starter at the position for the Aggies. Junior Erica Moscoso has been the beneficiary of playing behind Neves for the past two years and will look to slide into the starter’s role after appearing in 82 sets for USU last season. Redshirt Carly Lenzen will also look to fill the spot of departed senior Kaitlyn VanHoff, returning to the middle where she appeared in 18 matches as a true freshman in 2013. Sophomore Maddie Day will represent the final returner for Utah State and transitioned from an outside hitter to a back row defender last season. Her defense led to appearances in each of Utah State’s final 15 matches of the year as she finished with 1.34 digs per set. The group of returners will be joined by five new faces with four freshmen and a transfer joining the fray for 2015. The new additions include those anticipated to provide depth on the outside in hitters Lauren Anderson (Pittsburgh) and Simone Gibeau (Ralston Valley HS/ Arvada, Colo.), middle Lauren O’Brien (Clackamas HS/Clackamas, Ore.), defensive specialist Tasia Taylor (Taylorsville HS/Taylorsville, Utah) and setter Kassidy Johnson (Cienega HS/Vail, Ariz.). The squad of 13 will enter Utah State’s third year in the Mountain West, where the Aggies have finished third and sixth in their first two seasons in the league. “Our goal going into the season, like any other year, is to be competitive and finish among the top of the league,” DuBose said of the team’s focus. “Colorado State is really the gold standard in our league and we will have a goal to push them and make us as good as we can be. “The schedule that we have will be fun,” he said of the coming year. “There are several teams that are new to me.” Utah State kicked off the season by participating in the Texas Tech Tournament (Aug. 28-29), followed by the home opener against in-state rival Utah on Sept. 1. Other tourneys the Aggies will compete in include the
USC Tournament and Northern Colorado Tournament, in addition to a home tournament, the Gossner Invitational, in the friendly confines of Kirby Court at the Wayne Estes Center on Sept. 4-5. The tournament slate will pair USU with several opponents the Aggies haven’t faced in more than 10 years, including Texas Tech (1983), Houston (1995), USC (2001), Northern Colorado (1983) and Indiana (1985). The schedule also includes a pair of first-time opponents in Louisiana-Lafayette and Middle Tennessee. Utah State’s non-conference action also include an in-state clash with Utah Valley (9/15) at the Wayne Estes Center. The Aggies will open their 2015 Mountain West schedule on the road at Colorado State and Wyoming on Sept. 24 and 26, in what will provide a challenge for USU from the get-go. “We jump right into it when it comes to conference matches,” DuBose said of the start. “It will be good to be tested early by two of the best teams in the league.” The conference road opener will be followed by back-to-back homestands for the Aggies, hosting Fresno State and UNLV on Oct. 1 and Oct. 3, and Boise State and San José State on Oct. 6 and Oct. 10. Utah State will go back on the road Oct. 15 and Oct. 17 to face San Diego State and Nevada before opening the second half of its Mountain West slate on Oct. 22 and Oct. 24 when it hosts Wyoming and Colorado State. The Aggies will then play five of their final eight matches on the road, closing out October with matches at UNLV (10/29) and Fresno State (10/31) and then opening November with another road contest at San José State (11/5). Utah State returns to Kirby Court Nov. 12 and Nov. 14 with matches against Nevada and San Diego State before heading back on the road for a match at New Mexico on Nov. 18. USU will host its home finale on Nov. 21 when the Aggies face Air Force and close out the regular season on the road on Nov. 24 at Boise State. “Boise State has really become a natural rival for us,” DuBose said of the season finale. “I always enjoy our matches with Boise and look forward to that matchup.”

2015 USU WOMEN’S SOCCER SEASON OUTLOOK
Front Row (L-R): Natalie Stoven, Jayne Robison, Wesley Hamblin, Alexa Hunt, Karlee Campbell-Zollinger, Shyani Terukina, Mikayla Howes, Kacey Bolingbroke, Jenny De Boer, Jeannie Woller. Middle Row (L-R): Sara Cobb, Sydnie Dolzine, Jessica Brooksby, Ann Marie Lee, Kelsey Andersen, Danielle Nowers, Jordyn Chung-Hoon, Bailee Hammond, Katie Flynn, Josie Deere, Grace McGuire. Back Row (L-R): Assistant Coach Molli Merrill, Associate Head Coach Trevor Wachsman, Rachelle Warner, Erin Rickenbach, Jaylen Hinckley, Head Coach Heather Cairns, Lexie Henrie-Parrish, Lauren Harmon, Emma Clark, Manager Marley Olsen, Undergraduate Assistant Coach Sara Lorscheider.
OVERVIEW With every new soccer season comes a transition and learning curve. As players graduate and others enter the collegiate world, the team has to reevaluate its game plan and create a new camaraderie. While the 2015 Utah State soccer team returns 16 letterwinners and seven starters from last year’s squad, the Aggies welcome eight new freshmen, while looking to fill the holes of four key starters. “Last season we had a really large corps of freshmen and sophomores who all played substantial minutes for us. Now they are sophomores and juniors. That extra experience is something that we can be really excited about,” said veteran head coach Heather Cairns. “They bring a maturity and a confidence to the team the more time they spend on the field. They have so much of that time already that we can hopefully look for that to translate into even better things from them.” With a great balance of returning strength and fresh talent, Utah State is planning to utilize players from all four classes in the lineup. Each position is highlighted by seasoned returners, but also features new faces with quality experience. “It’s always exciting when you add rookies into the mix. You really count on them to strengthen your team. We have a great spine with our returners, but we need these new players to step into crucial roles,” Cairns said. “If we’re going to be a successful team, we need four classes contributing. The rookies always provide excitement, competition and depth. We need them to make us better.” Utah State finished the 2014 season with a 10-8-2 overall record and a 6-4-1 mark in Mountain West play to finish fifth in the league. This year, the Aggies were picked to finish tied for fourth in the preseason coaches’ poll. USU will open league play at home against New Mexico on Friday, Sept. 25. The season will conclude with the Mountain West Tournament, hosted by defending champion San Diego State, Nov. 3-7. “The conference is looking as tough as ever, it just keeps improving,” Cairns said. “We’ve finished fifth in the conference the past two seasons, so we want to work on improving our finish. We want to make a run at the conference tournament in San Diego. Throughout the year, we want to keep improving and we want to compete. We want to have the right mindset going into things. “The goal for most of the teams of the conference is

®
the same, which is to win the tournament and to have a good enough season to qualify for an at-large bid. The NCAA Tournament has to be on our minds.” NOTES • Utah State will face three in-state rivals on the road, traveling to Utah, Utah Valley and BYU. The Cougars were the top finisher on the Aggies’ schedule last season as they ended 2014 ranked 22nd nationally after falling in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. • The Aggies return 16 letterwinners and seven starters from last year’s squad, to go along with eight freshmen. FORWARDS Utah State welcomes the return of junior Jessica Brooksby up top. During her sophomore campaign with the Aggies, the former Sky View standout tied for the team lead in goals with four, to go along with three assists for a team-best 11 points. Sophomore Bailee Hammond and freshman Sydnie Dolzine will join Brooksby at the forward position. “In the target forward position, we obviously have to talk about Jess,” Cairns said. “She’s one of our leading point-earners from last year, so we’re looking for her to lead that line. Sydnie will be a great rookie to watch up there. Bailee also played that position in the spring, so look for those three to be rotating in there.” NOTES • Brooksby scored the Aggies’ lone goal in their season-opening 1-0 victory over Central Arkansas on Aug. 21. Two days later, she had an assist in Utah State’s 3-0 win over Missouri State. • Dolzine also found the back of the net for the Aggies during the opening weekend as the native of McKinney, Texas, scored the second goal against Missouri State. MIDFIELDERS Despite the fact Utah State loses Lexie Morgan, who earned second-team all-Mountain West honors in 2014, Utah State has plenty of depth in the midfield. “Lauren Harmon had a breakout season last year, so we’re looking for her to continue her great work in the defensive midfield,” Cairns said. “Shyani Terukina had a strong sophomore year, so we’ll look for her minutes to
increase. Among the defensive midfield, Erin Rickenbach has a year of experience and brings some maturity. Ann Marie Lee also had a great run last spring in that defensive center mid role. It’s a new position for her and she’ll provide some great depth for us. Kacey Bolingbroke missed last season with an injury, but will be exciting to watch this year. We have some exciting newcomers that will add to the depth there. We expect Emma Clark and Jenny De Boer to compete for those roles. We’ve got a good mix of returners and fresh faces there.” In the attacking midfield, junior Jayne Robison returns as a starter. During the 2014 campaign, Robison scored two goals. Sophomore Wesley Hamblin and junior Katie Flynn give Utah State experience in the wide attacking spot. NOTES • True freshman midfielder Jaylen Hinckley scored 86 goals during her stellar prep career at College Station (Texas) High School. • Newcomers to watch in the midfield this season include Alexa Hunt and Jordyn Chung-Hoon, who are both freshmen. Chung-Hoon scored her first career goal as an Aggie against Missouri State on Aug. 23. DEFENDERS Utah State returns three of its starting back five and will rely on senior Lexie Henrie-Parrish, junior Karlee Campbell-Zollinger and sophomore Rachelle Warner to help anchor the backline. Other Aggies who could contribute significantly include redshirt sophomore Mikayla Howes, sophomore Danielle Nowers and freshman Kelsey Andersen. NOTES • Utah State must replace defensive stalwart Taryn Rose, who was tabbed the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year last season. Rose ended her Aggie career tied for first in matches started (86). GOALKEEPERS Senior Jeannie Woller headlines the goalkeeper corps that includes juniors Sara Cobb and Natalie Stoven and redshirt freshman Grace McGuire. NOTES • The defense allowed just 21 goals in 20 matches last season. • Woller had a goals against average of 1.03 during her junior campaign in 2014.

Utah State’s 13th Athletics Hall of Fame Class will be introduced at halftime of tonight’s game. The 2015 class includes Dr. Stan L. Albrecht, the University’s 15th president; Lucia Chudy, a two-time All-American volleyball player; Ray Corn, the most successful Aggie gymnastics coach ever; Kevin Curtis, the most prolific wide receiver in school history; Spencer Nelson, one of the best Aggie basketball players ever; and Lloydene Searle, the first female athlete to earn a scholarship in school history and the most successful Aggie softball coach ever. A total of 87 individuals and three teams have now been inducted into the Utah State Athletics Hall of Fame. Albrecht was named Utah State University’s 15th President on Feb. 1, 2005. At the time of the announcement, Albrecht was serving as Executive Vice President and Provost at Utah State, a position he held since 2001. He previously served as its dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences from 1998-2001. Albrecht has had many successes during his tenure as president. Under his leadership, the university launched a comprehensive fundraising campaign that raised $500 million at its completion in October, 2012. Albrecht has also had a significant impact on the Athletics Department at Utah State with the growth of its infrastructure with the construction of the Jim & Carol Laub Athletics-Academics Complex, the ICON Sports Performance Center, the Wayne Estes Center and upcoming renovations to the west side of Maverik Stadium. Albrecht was also instrumental in USU’s invitation for membership into the Mountain West Conference in 2012. Chudy is one of just four volleyball players in school history to earn multiple All-America honors. A two-time Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) All-American (1978, 1979), Chudy helped Utah State volleyball to its only national championship in 1978 followed by a national runner-up finish in 1979. During the 1977 season, USU set the school-record for wins as it finished the year with a 46-11-2 record, including a 10-1 mark in the Intermountain Athletic Conference (IAC), as it went on to take first-place at the AIAW Regional Tournament. During its national championship run in 1978, USU posted a 42-4-2 record and began the season by winning its first 26 matches. USU also went 10-2 in conference play that season and concluded its national championship run by defeating UCLA in four sets in the AIAW National Championship match in Tuscaloosa, Ala. During the 1979 season, USU went 10-0 in conference play and finished with a 35-5-2 mark as it lost to Hawai’i in five sets in the national championship match. Chudy, who was also a two-time all-IAC selection, helped Utah State to a 123-20-6 (.846) record during her three-year career, including a 30-3 (.909) conference mark. While at Utah State, Chudy also excelled as a track & field athlete and placed third in the high jump at the prestigious Jessie Owens Invitational during her senior season.

Ray Corn Gymnastics 1978-2008
Kevin Curtis Football 2001-02
CLASS OF 2015 Corn was hired as Utah State’s first-ever gymnastics coach, transitioning the program from club level to NCAA status, and served in that capacity for 31 years before retiring in 2008. Corn, who had an overall record of 442444-2 (.499), with a regular-season mark of 389-2842 (.578), led the Aggies to the postseason 26 times, including five trips to the national championships. In 1978, Corn took a club-level Utah State gymnastics team and transformed it into an Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) power, finishing 30-4 in his first season. The next year, the Aggies made the first of four consecutive trips to the AIAW National Championships, finishing as high as ninth in 1982. During his USU coaching career, Corn led the Aggies to four Big West Conference Championships (1992, 1996, 1998, 2001) and the 2005 Western Gymnastics Conference Championship. Overall, Corn coached three All-Americans, three Olympians, three World University Game Trials competitors and nine NCAA national qualifiers, and was a six-time conference coach of the year (1986, 1987, 1988, 1994, 1998, 2001), along with being named the 1991 Midwest Regional Coach of the Year. In 1991, USU finished 12th as a team at the NCAA Championships. Between 1991 and his retirement in 2008, 32 gymnasts earned academic AllAmerica honors a total of 50 times under Corn, while 92 gymnasts received academic all-conference accolades. Curtis earned Associated Press Third-Team AllAmerican honors and Football News Honorable Mention All-American honors as a junior in 2001 and was a twotime first-team all-independent selection for Utah State during the 2001 and 2002 seasons after transferring from Snow College. During his junior year as a walk-on, Curtis led the nation with 9.1 receptions per game and set single-season school records for receptions (100), receiving yards (1,531), most double-digit reception games (6), most 100-yard receiving games (9), and most consecutive 100-yard receiving games (6), while adding 10 touchdowns. Curtis again led the team in receptions (74), receiving yards (1,258) and receiving touchdowns (9) during his senior season as he ranked seventh in the nation in receiving yards per game (114.36) and 12th in the country in receptions per game (6.73). His 1,258 receiving yards as a senior still ranks fourth alltime in school history, while his 74 catches rank fifth alltime. Overall, Curtis had 16 career 100-yard receiving games to rank first all-time in school history to go along with two 200-yard receiving games, and also holds the school record for receiving yards per game for both a season (139.2) and career (126.8). His 7.9 receptions per game during his two-year career also ranks first alltime in school history, and he ranks second all-time in school history in both career receptions (174) and career receiving yards (2,789). Nelson was named a Mid-Major All-American and the Mid-Major Player of the Year by CollegeInsider.com as a senior in 2005 as he was the only player in the nation

As a senior, Nelson finished the year ranked first in the Big West Conference in assist-toturnover ratio (1.92), second in rebounding (7.9) and field goal percentage (.600), third in scoring (16.0) and assists (4.8), and fifth in free throw percentage (.787). Nelson finished his Aggie career with 1,283 points, 800 rebounds and 62 blocked shots, and still ranks 19th alltime in school history in scoring, eighth in rebounding and 10th in blocked shots. He also ranks third all-time in school history in career field goal percentage (.617), seventh in games played (120), ninth in double-figure rebound games (29), 10th in double-doubles (22), 10th in both free throws made (384) and attempted (533), and 12th in assists (302). During his final three years at Utah State, Nelson helped the Aggies to a 73-21 (.777) mark, including a 42-12 (.778) ledger in the Big West as USU shared the regular season championship in 2004, and won Big West tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2003 and 2005. Nelson was also a three-time academic all-Big West honoree and one of 16 Aggie greats named to USU’s All-Century basketball team in 2005. Searle was the first female to earn an athletic scholarship in Utah State history as she competed in volleyball, basketball and softball during her Aggie career and was named the school’s Female Athlete of the Year during her senior season in 1975. A four-year captain in each sport she competed in, Searle earned all-conference honors in both basketball and softball, as well as a Kodak All-American basketball team nomination. In 1981, she was named Utah State’s head softball coach and led the Aggies to a national championship, their second-straight, in her first season. In 17 years as the Aggies’ head coach, Searle compiled a record of 467-345-2 (.739) and is the school’s all-time leader in wins and games coached. During her 17 years at Utah State, she averaged 30 wins per season and led USU to the Women’s College World Series five times (1981, 1984, 1989, 1992, 1993). Utah State won a school-record 43 games in 1992, and in 1993, Searle was named the Big West Conference Coach of the Year as the Aggies tied for the league title, their last in school history. Searle was also named the High Country Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1985. Overall, Utah State won five conference championships under Searle (1981, 1982, 1986, 1987, 1993) as she coached 15 All-Americans, 21 all-region selections and 30 all-conference honorees. In 2011, Searle and the rest of the 1981 National Championship softball team were inducted into the USU Athletics Hall of Fame.
