RUNNIN’ UTE PLAYER FEATURE By Shelby Cravens Utah Athletics Communications

I Bringing Back the Good Old Days When Delon Wright signed with Utah two years ago, no one could have foreseen tremendous impact the junior college guard would have on the program.

Delon Wright has had three double-doubles this season, including 11 points and 10 rebounds against USC on Jan. 2.

f you’ve read a sports section recently, chances are you’ve seen the name Delon Wright grace a headline or two. Although unintentional, the 6-foot-5 Utah senior guard never strays far from the spotlight. Wright doesn’t revel in the attention, but still quietly embraces it. It has been a long basketball journey for Wright and the recognition serves as a reminder that his boyhood dreams are coming true. Wright grew up in Los Angeles and was introduced to basketball at a young age by his older brother, Dorell. Since Dorell was already playing basketball, picking up the sport was the natural thing for Delon to do. The boys had a hoop in their backyard and often played with their dad, and it didn’t take long for Delon to find a rhythm on the court and fall in love with the game. It was obvious that the Wright brothers were natural athletes. Dorell, six years Delon’s senior, was selected 19th overall in the 2004 NBA draft and is currently in his 11th season in the league, playing with the Portland Trailblazers. Watching his brother’s success planted a seed in Delon. He, too, hoped to play ball for a living someday. As the years passed, Wright’s skills continued to improve. He was a standout on the hardwood but struggled to mirror that performance in the classroom. The Levzinger High School senior sparked the interest of many college teams, but after seeing Wright’s transcripts most lost interest. “My grades weren’t too good. Coaches would call for me, but when they got my transcript it wasn’t good enough for them to continue recruiting me, so a lot of schools backed away,” explained Wright. However, Wright was determined to keep playing and eventually signed with the City College of San Francisco. He made an immediate impact, leading the Rams to a North Division title with a 27-3 record as a freshman. He then earned Coast Conference Player of the Year and all-state first team accolades as a sophomore. With his academics in order, there was no doubt Wright was headed to play at the Division I level. Washington, Washington State, Gonzaga and St. Mary’s all joined Utah in pursuit of him. For Wright, Utah stood out from the other schools immediately. The historic program was launching a major rebuild, and Wright not only wanted to be a part of that process, he wanted to get in on the ground floor of it. 2014-15 UTAH BASKETBALL | 5

RUNNIN’ UTE PLAYER FEATURE

Senior guard Delon Wright ranks in the top five in the Pac-12 with 5.4 assists per game and averages 14.2 points per game to rank in the top 15 in the league. “That was the main goal for me coming out of junior college, to be able to contribute,” said Wright. “Since I only had two years, I wanted to go somewhere and contribute right away.” It took Wright just one season to plaster his name across the Utah record book. His 82 steals in 2013-14 were second only to Andre Miller’s single-season record of 84. Wright led the Pac-12 in minutes played with 36.4 per game, and finished in the top-15 in the league in field goal percentage, assistto-turnover ratio, blocked shots, scoring, rebounding and free throw percentage. Wright earned Utah’s first-ever All-Pac 12 First Team selection, while also being named to the conference All-Defensive Team. At the close of his first season with the Runnin’ Utes, Wright was faced with a tough decision: play his senior year at Utah or enter the NBA draft? “It was a tough decision, but I talked a lot with the coaches and my family. They just 6 | 2014-15 UTAH BASKETBALL

advised me to come back because I would have a chance to improve my draft stock,” said Wright. “I would be able to become more of an all-around player and help this program have a good year. That was the main reason. I didn’t want to just leave the program when we were still on the rise. I wanted to help them get back to the good old days.” Getting back to the “good old days” is exactly what the Runnin’ Utes have done this season, and Wright has contributed mightily to the team’s meteoric rise. Just three years ago, Utah won only six games. Through the middle of February, the Utes were 20-4 and had been ranked for 12 consecutive weeks. “One of the best things I’ve seen is the fans filling the Huntsman [Center],” said Wright of the program’s improvement. “As we get better, we’re also getting better recruits.” A scintillating player to watch, Wright’s contributions on the court go much further

than what the highlights show. He is what is popularly called a “stats sheet stuffer.” In the first 24 games this season, the senior led the Utes in scoring eight times, rebounds four times, assists 18 times, steals 17 times and blocks four times, collecting three doubledoubles along the way. Wright also ranked in the top five in the Pac-12 in steals, assists and assist-to-turnover ratio; was in the top 10 in field goal percentage; and placed in the top 15 in scoring—all while cutting down on his minutes played to keep him fresher late in the season. In addition to his contributions on the court, Wright has also become a mentor to the Utes’ large group of underclassmen. “I try to be an example to them and work hard every day so they can see that,” said Wright. “I push them, play good defense on them, and try to blow by them so they can get better. I just try to help them in little ways.” With the regular season winding down, Wright has a lot in front of him. In the immediate future, the senior is looking forward to the Pac-12 Tournament and hopes to lead the Utes to a high seed in the NCAA Tournament. Then, Wright will start gearing up for the NBA draft. Wright has been on the radar of NBA scouts dating back to last season, but has seen a drastic increase in attention over the last few months. His performance has placed Wright in contention for numerous National Player of the Year awards. “I’ve been working toward that, to be one of the best players,” Wright said in response to the recognition. “Now that it’s pretty much happening, I’m still in shock that it’s happening. But, I’m not looking at the internet anymore. I try not to focus on it.” As the season progresses, the notion of Wright following his brother into the NBA is becoming more of a reality. “It’s a redo of my brother going to the NBA,” Wright said of his own journey. “I wish I would’ve paid more attention to the things that were going on during that time. To be going through the same things I saw him going through is funny. My family is real happy and really proud of me. I’m just going to continue working this year, and if I get there to play with my brother that will be great too. It’ll be a good time when it comes.” As for the immediate future, Wright has his focus squarely on earning his degree in sociology this spring and helping the Runnin’ Utes win every game they can. “We want to win the Pac-12 and the tournament. Win it all.” said Wright. “We don’t plan on losing any more games this season.”

JON M. HUNTSMAN CENTER

R

egarded as one of the top college arenas in the nation since opening its doors in 1969, the Jon M. Huntsman Center has provided an imposing home court advantage for Utah basketball. Now in its 45th year of existence, the Huntsman Center underwent a $6 million renovation this past offseason. The original ceiling cloud was replaced with a super grid structure. Energy efficient LED arena lighting, which accommodates instant on and off, was installed. A new state-of-theart sound system and ceiling mounted sound panels will provide greater clarity. The project also included a draping system, offering a more intimate setting for just over 8,000 fans in the arena’s lower bowl for smaller events. New banners were hung to honor Utah’s all-time greatest teams and retired jerseys, and a maple wood floor was installed with an updated graphics and color scheme. This past October, ESPN.com rated the new floor design as the third-best in all of college basketball. New LED concourse lighting has been put in and the walls of the lower bowl were wrapped with new graphics. A landmark on the U. campus, the Jon M. Huntsman Center is the perfect place to watch a sporting event. With 15,000 chair seats assuring a great view from anywhere in the arena, the Huntsman Center is the largest venue in the Pac-12 Conference. Over six million fans have watched the

Runnin’ Utes in the Huntsman Center. The Runnin’ Utes entered the 2014-15 season with a 550-140 (.797) all-time record in the facility and have posted winning home records in 39 of the last 40 seasons, including eight undefeated seasons. Utah’s 550th victory in the building came on March 1, 2014, as the Runnin’ Utes took down Colorado to conclude their home season with an 18-2 record. In conference home games the past 19 years, Utah is 131-40 (.766). Long recognized as a site of championships, the Huntsman Center ranks third among the nation’s arenas for the most NCAA men’s basketball tournament

basketball games hosted, with 81 games having been played in the facility. The JMHC played host to the 1979 NCAA Basketball Championship “Dream Match-Up” featuring Indiana State’s Larry Bird and Michigan State’s Magic Johnson—deemed one of the most successful Final Fours ever held. The men’s NCAA regional tournament came to the Huntsman Center twice (1971 and ‘81). First and second round games took place 13 times (1984, ‘85, ‘87, ‘88, ‘89, ‘90, ‘91, ‘93, ‘95, ‘97, 2000, ‘03 and ‘06). The JMHC has hosted NCAA women’s basketball first and second round games twice (2001 and ‘11). Also a famous gymnastics venue, the Huntsman Center has hosted nine national gymnastics championships, 13 regional championships and the 1993 World University Games Trials. A $1.3 million center-hung video board and scoreboard was installed in the fall of 2007. It features an LED ring by Optotech and four LCD video screens. The locker rooms have also been renovated in recent years, funded in part by donations from former Ute All-Americans Andrew Bogut and Andre Miller totaling $325,000. Inside the facility are athletic coaches’ and administrative offices. The enormous reflective silver dome is the largest of its kind in the world. Underground tunnels stretching 2,220 feet connect the arena with the four-building HPER complex, which is undergoing a renovation. The $36 million project includes the new Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Center, which will house the men’s and women’s basketball programs, and the Utah Athletics Performance Center, a stateof-the-art sports medicine and strength & conditioning facility.

JON M. AND KAREN HUNTSMAN BASKETBALL CENTER

T

he new Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Center is scheduled to open in August of 2015 northeast of the Huntsman Center arena. The $36-million project also includes a state-of-the-art Utah Athletics Performance Center, which will be located northwest of the arena, and encompasses 80,000-square feet of space. “This is a major basketball facility that will give us everything we need to be successful,’’ said Utah athletics director Chris Hill. “It’s fantastic.” The three-story Huntsman Basketball Center will include dedicated practice gymnasiums for the both men’s and women’s basketball teams. The gyms will include viewing balconies and on-site sports medicine facilities equipped with treatment and taping tables, stem machines, sports drink and supplement dispensers, and ice machines. The men’s and women’s teams will move into new locker rooms—which will include plunge pools—film rooms, and player lounges. There will also be an expansive Hall of Fame area in the building’s

12 | 2014-15 UTAH BASKETBALL

atrium and a shared dining room. A new and expanded team laundry and equipment facility will also be part of the project. The coaching and support staffs for both programs will have their own floor of spacious offices, meeting rooms and recruiting lounges. A large observation deck will be placed on top of the building for team and alumni functions, providing sweeping views of the Wasatch Mountain range, the University of Utah campus, and downtown Salt Lake City.

“We already have the finest [game] facility in the Pac-12 and by the time we finish the additions with this basketball center, no university in America is going to be able to challenge us as far as the wonderful facilities,” said Jon Huntsman, whose name has graced the U. arena for the past 30 years after a major donation. “We’re excited about the Runnin’ Utes for the next many years and we’re going to make this facility, added to the Huntsman Center, the best in America. It’s a community effort.”

UTAH ATHLETICS PERFORMANCE CENTER T

he state-of-the-art Utah Athletics Performance Center, a two-story, 20,000-square-foot structure, is taking shape on the northwest side of the of the Jon M. Huntsman Center arena and is scheduled to open in March of 2015. The performance center will provide everything a student-athlete needs to achieve their peak level of performance— ranging from nutrition, strength and conditioning, sports medicine and rehabilitation, and sports psychology—all within close proximity to maximize time efficiency. The ground floor of the building will feature a 9,500-square-foot sports medicine facility and a 500-square-foot fueling station, while an expansive 10,000-square-foot strength and conditioning center will reside on the top floor. An exterior entrance will be located off the southeast corner of the building, while a refurbished tunnel system will connect the Utah Athletics Performance Center to the existing HPER complex, the Jon M. Huntsman Center arena and the new Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Center. The new sports medicine area will have 18 treatment tables—including one traction table—six taping stations, a hydrotherapy area, a functional rehabilitation space, and three exam rooms. The hydrotherapy area will include a plunge pool in the shape of a block U, half

containing cold water and half hot water with a capacity of 12 people per side. It will also house a Hydroworks 2000 underwater treadmill equipped with cameras and television monitors, allowing athletes to watch their work under water.

Six offices for the full-time staff and one office for graduate assistants will also be included, as well as an area to make custom orthodics. The second-floor strength and conditioning center will have 12 working stations—double the number of the current HPER strength and conditioning room— which will allow athletes to have more efficient workouts with better rest intervals. The new facility will also include an artificial turf running surface, measuring five yards wide by 35 yards in length, where sprint and plyometric drills will take place to spare athletes the wear and tear on their bodies from working on hard surfaces. The current plans call for installation of Kaiser Functional Trainers. The air pressurized equipment will allow athletes to train with a greater variance to make them stronger and more powerful, and address weaknesses. Video evaluation systems will be placed at each station. The strength and conditioning center will also include cardio equipment, medicine balls and elastic bands to perform numerous functional exercises. The fueling station, located adjacent to the lobby area on the ground floor, will offer a variety of snacks to help athletes intake the necessary levels of carbs and proteins within the critical 30-minute window after a workout to help their bodies recover.

UTAH TRADITIONS

T

he University of Utah officially adopted the nickname “Utes” for its athletic teams in 1972. The school uses the nickname with permission of the Ute Tribal Council. “What is a Ute?” The Utes are a great basin Indian tribe. The Utes were one of the first tribes to acquire the horse from the Spanish, which transformed their culture and enabled them to become resourceful and valiant. The Utes speak their own language that is derived from the UtoAztecan language family. Currently, there are more than 3,000 Ute tribal members and half of them live on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation in northeastern Utah. The Utes are important contributors to Utah’s economy through distribution of their energy resources and raising stock. The Utah Pep Band, a 65-member group, keeps Utah fans’ spirits high in the stands at basketball, gymnastics and volleyball contests, performing for over 50 events a year to upwards of 75,000 people. Like the Utah Marching Band, the Pep Band offers students the opportunity to serve as ambassadors for the U. at home games, as well as Pac-12 Conference and NCAA basketball tournament games. Both music and non-music majors perform contemporary, pop and jazz band music during time out slots at basketball games and during rotations at gymnastic meets, and before and after events at both, creating a lively, fun atmosphere. 14 | 2014-15 UTAH BASKETBALL

The Block U (elevation 5,300 feet above sea level) was built on Mount Van Cott bordering the Utah campus in 1907. Lights on the 100-foot-tall landmark are illuminated primarily for athletic events and notify people in the Salt Lake valley that the Utes are playing at home (the lights flash after a Utah victory).

Originally built with limestone, the Block U was later replaced by a cement version. In 1969, the design was modified and 124 lights were installed. A fundraising campaign in 2006 raised $400,000 to renovate the aging landmark. Slabs of concrete and steel rebar now reinforce the 5,000 feet of surface area. Another major improvement was the installation of light emitting diode (LED) red and white lights, which are controlled through a wireless system. The MUSS currently sponsors fan clubs for the Utah football, men’s basketball, volleyball and gymnastics teams. The name MUSS was originally derived from the school fight song lyrics (“… No other gang of college fans dare meet us in the muss”). Members now refer to MUSS as an acronym for “Mighty Utah Student Section.” MUSS members are easily identified by their customized tee-shirts and their policy of standing throughout the entire game. The MUSS turned 13 years old this season. Originally known as the Student Fan Club and the Utah Fan Club, the group adopted the name MUSS for the 2002 football season. Watch for the MUSS to regularly “Throw up a U,” a tradition that began at the Utah women’s gymnastics meets in 2004 and soon caught on with all the Ute teams and fans. It involves forming the U with their hands and raising it toward the sky.

CHRIS HILL, PH.D.

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR – 28TH YEAR

SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT

J

ust 37 years old when he was appointed as Utah’s director of athletics, Chris Hill, Ph.D., has led the school’s athletics programs to unprecedented success since his hiring in October of 1987. His 28 years at the U. makes him the nation’s longest tenured active athletics director at the same school in the NCAA FBS. Among Hill’s most monumental accomplishments was spearheading Utah’s invitation to join the Pac-12 Conference in the summer of 2010, a move preceded by the football team’s historic BCS appearances in the 2004 and 2008 seasons. Utah has won nine NCAA team championships during Hill’s tenure—five by the ski team and four by the gymnastics team—and has finished as the national runner-up 15 times. Those runnerup finishes include a No. 2 national ranking by the football team after its victory over Alabama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl, and by the 1998 men’s basketball team. He has hired three coaches who won National Coach of the Year honors at Utah: football coaches Urban Meyer (2004) and Kyle Whittingham (2008), and men’s basketball coach Rick Majerus (1998). Hill has served on several national boards, including the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee (2004-09), chair of the NCAA Championships/Competition Cabinet (1997-98) and the NCAA Management Council Administrative Committee. He was on NACDA’s executive committee from 2002-06. The football program, which had not played in a bowl game since 1964 prior to Hill’s appointment as athletics director, is 11-4 in bowl games during his term. Utah’s other athletic programs have also thrived under his leadership. The men’s basketball team has played in 13 NCAA Tournaments—advancing 18 | 2014-15 UTAH BASKETBALL

to the Sweet 16 five times and the Elite Eight twice. In 1998, the Runnin’ Utes advanced to the NCAA Championship game against Kentucky. The women’s basketball team has 15 NCAA appearances, playing in the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight in 2006, and was the 2013 WNIT runner-up. The gymnastics team has made 18 NCAA Super Six appearances while qualifying for the NCAA Championships all 27 years of Hill’s tenure as AD—and the ski team has finished first or second in the nation 14 times under his watch. He has received a number of awards, including: 2011 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Under Armour West Region Athletic Director of the Year, finalist for the 2011 Athletic Director of the Year by SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily, 2011 Utah YMCA Man of the Year, 2004 Mountain West Conference’s Commissioner’s Award, 1981 Milton Bennion Fellowship, 1984 Utah Recreation Therapy Association Outstanding Service award and 1996 Utah MS Sportsperson of the Year. L

arry Krystkowiak is entering his fourth year as the head coach of the Runnin’ Utes. Last season, Krystkowiak guided the Utes to their first postseason appearance since 2009 and their best record since joining the Pac-12, surpassing the 20-win mark. Delon Wright, in his first season under Krystkowiak’s tutelage, went on to earn First Team All-Pac-12 and AllDefensive Team honors, a precedent for Utah men’s basketball in the conference of champions. Jordan Loveridge continued his development and finished among the top-12 in the league in scoring and rebounding and was Utah’s first Pac-12 Player of the Week. Other noticeable improvements were made by Brandon Taylor, who finished fourth in 3-pointers made and 10th in assists; Dallin Bachynski, who was one of the league leaders in blocked shots; and Dakarai Tucker, who was sixth in 3-point field goal percentage.

The Utes also excelled in the classroom with Taylor being named a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree and Jeremy Olsen earning a second Pac-12 All-Academic accolades. In all, five Utes—a program record—earned that distinction from the league as Olsen was joined by Taylor, Tucker, Bachynski and Renan Lenz. Striving for success, both on and off the court, are trademarks of the Krystkowiak era. Due to improvements in both areas, the Utah head coach was rewarded with a new five-year contract that runs through the 2018-19 season. In 2012-13, Krystkowiak led Utah to the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals for the first time in program history and won two postseason games for the first time since Utah won the Mountain West Conference championship in 2009. The Utes also more than doubled their win total from the previous season by winning 15 games. Jason Washburn was named honorable mention All-Pac-12, becoming the first Ute

LARRY KRYSTKOWIAK to receive postseason recognition since the team entered the league. Also, Olsen was named to the Pac-12’s All-Academic First Team and became the first Ute to win scholastic honors since the switch in conferences. Krystkowiak was introduced on April 4, 2011 as the new men’s basketball coach at the University of Utah and the man to lead the Runnin’ Utes into the next phase of their storied history. Krystkowiak, who has prior head coaching experience in the NCAA, CBA and NBA, left a position as an assistant coach with the New Jersey Nets to become the 15th head coach in Utah men’s basketball history. In his previous collegiate head coaching post, Krystkowiak led his alma mater, the University of Montana, to a 42-20 record and two NCAA appearances as the Grizzlies’ from 2004-06 before joining the NBA coaching ranks. Hired as an assistant coach by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2006-07, “Krysko” was elevated to head coach with 17 games remaining in the season. He was retained as the Bucks’ head coach in 2007-08. Among the players he coached was former Ute AllAmerican Andrew Bogut. Krystkowiak’s other head coaching experience was in the CBA with the Idaho Stampede in 2003-04. After a nine-year NBA playing career in six cities, Krystkowiak’s first coaching job was as an assistant coach at Montana from 1998-2000. The Grizzlies were the Big Sky champions in 2000. He then moved on to Old Dominion as an assistant in 2001-02 before signing on as the head coach of the CBA’s Idaho Stampede. In his lone season with the Stampede in 2003-04, he led the team to a 38-14 record and a berth in the CBA Finals.

Krystkowiak spent the next two seasons as the head coach at Montana. The Grizzlies were Big Sky champions in 2004-05, winning the conference tournament and earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. They appeared in the Big Dance in 2006 as well, earning an at-large bid and advancing to the second round with an upset victory over fifth-seed Nevada. It was UM’s first NCAA tournament win since 1975. Montana finished the season with a 24-7 record, after going 1813 in Krystkowiak’s first season, losing to No. 1 seed Washington in the NCAA First Round. The only three-time Big Sky MVP in league history and two-time Academic All-American for Montana from 1982-86, Krystkowiak is still the school’s all-time career leader in points (2,017) and rebounds (1,105). He was selected in the second

ommy Connor is in his fourth year as a Utah assistant coach under Larry Krystkowiak. During the summer of 2014, Connor was elevated to the title of associate head coach. This is Connor’s second stint with the Utes, following four years as an assistant under the late Rick Majerus from 1994-97. Connor, a former Utah player (1986-88, 1990), returned to his alma mater after a very successful 12-year stint as the head coach at Westminster College (NAIA). Connor was a four-year starter for the Runnin’ Utes at point guard. After graduating with a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Science, he spent three years as a graduate assistant and another four years as an assistant coach at Utah under Majerus. During his time on the bench, Connor helped guide Utah to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight as well as the NIT “Final Four”, while capturing four Western Athletic Conference championships. In a stellar 12-year career at Westminster, Connor led the Griffins to a 264-114 (.698) overall record, while proving even more dominant in Frontier Conference play with a 126-40 (.759) mark. Those numbers become more impressive when considering that Connor built the program from scratch after it was reinstated prior to the 1999-2000 season. Under Connor, Westminster posted 10 seasons with at least 20 wins, including nine straight from 2002-2011. The Griffins won seven regular-season Frontier Conference championships and two conference tournament titles. Connor was a five-time Frontier Conference Coach of the Year and his teams qualified for nine NAIA National Championship appearances. Connor coached 17 players to NAIA AllAmerican status and had one NAIA National Player of the Year. The Griffins also had five players named Frontier Conference Player of the Year and saw 36 players earn all-conference

Cullen played for Utah from 19982002 and helped the Utes to a 90-35 record during that span, including a 28-5 mark his freshman year. One of the Mountain West Conference’s top 3-point shooters during his career, Cullen can still be found in the Utah record books ranked sixth in career 3-pointers made (153) and 3-pointers attempted (396). In 2009, the team won the NJCAA national championship, the first in school history, along with its second consecutive Region 18 championship. In 1994, just his third season as head coach, Parrish steered SLCC to the Region 18 Tournament title and a fifth-place finish at the NJCAA national championships. Parrish finished with a career record of 447-198 (.693), eclipsing the 20-win mark 14 times. Under Parrish’s stewardship, SLCC had 20 NJCAA All-Americans and 24 NJCAA Academic All-Americans. Nearly 50% of his players have moved on to compete at the NCAA Div. I level, with several now playing professionally in the NBA and overseas. In his time at SLCC, Parrish recruited and coached players from all over the United States and many foreign countries, including Greece, England, Turkey, Australia, Switzerland, Brazil, Russia, Serbia, and the West African countries of Senegal, Cameroon, and Ivory Coast. THE UTAH FIGHT SONG

VERSE

CHORUS

I am a Utah Man/Fan, sir, and I live across the green, Our gang it is the jolliest that you have ever seen.

VERSE

Our students are the finest and each one’s a shining star,

And when we prom the avenue, all lined up in a row,

Our yell, you’ll hear it ringing through the mountains near and far!

And arm in arm and step in time as down the street we go. No matter if a freshman green or in a senior’s gown,

CHORUS

The people all admit we are the warmest gang in town.

Who am I, sir, A Utah Man/Fan am I!

CHORUS

A Utah Man/Fan, sir, Will be ‘til I die.

VERSE

Ki-yi!

We may not live forever on this jolly good sphere, But while we do we’ll live a life of merriment and cheer.

VERSE

And when our college days are o’er and night is drawing nigh,

We’re up to snuff, we never bluff, we’re game for any fuss.

With parting breath we’ll sing that song: “A Utah Man/Fan Am I.”

No rival band of college fans dare meet us in The MUSS. So fill your lungs and sing it out and shout it to the sky,

CHORUS

We’ll fight for dear old crimson for a Utah Man/Fan am I! Go Utes!

Andrew Bogut was the Consensus National Player of the Year in 2005. 38 | 2014-15 UTAH BASKETBALL

Utah became the first Final Four team with two Academic All-Americans in its starting lineup in 1998 with Drew Hansen (left) and Michael Doleac (right). Hanno Möttölä (center) played off the bench in ’98 and earned Academic AllAmerica honors the next two years.

A PROGRAM ON THE RISE Delon Wright – All-Pac-12

Delon Wright became the first Runnin’ Ute to earn First Team All-Pac-12 honors in 2014. He was also named to the league AllDefensive Team and ranked in the top 10 in the Pac-12 in scoring, assists, steals and blocked shots.

PAC-12 CONFERENCE Utah became a member of the Pac12 Conference on July 1, 2011. Having earned the nickname the “Conference of Champions,” the Pac-12’s success is as evident in men’s basketball as any sport, where league teams have captured a record 16 NCAA championships. The Pac12 also lays claim to 38 NCAA Final Four appearances, 91 consensus All-Americans, 17 National Players of the Year, and 25 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame members. The Pac-12 has sent at least half of its teams on to postseason play 23 times in the last 25 years. During that time, 12 league players have garnered National Player of the Year or National Freshman of the Year honors.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Delon Wright became the first Runnin’ Ute to earn First Team All-Pac-12 honors in 2014.

The Next Level

Over the last seven years, 29 players from Pac-12 teams have gone on to become first round NBA Draft picks, with a total of 49 players having been selected. Below is a breakdown of how the Pac-12 compares to other conferences in producing NBA talent in recent years.

Television Exposure

The 2014-15 Pac-12 Conference basketball television package features 214 men’s contests telecast to national and regional audiences.

The Pac-12 men’s basketball package includes 146 games aired on the Pac-12 Networks (including eight Pac-12 Tournament games), 44 on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU (including the Pac-12 Tournament championship game), 22 games on FOX Sports 1/FOX and two nationally on CBS. Additional appearances will be made through other conference television agreements and various in-season tournaments. Utah men’s basketball will have every game televised this season, including a record 13 games on the ESPN family of networks during the regular season. All 30 regular-season men’s basketball contests will be televised with 14 games on the Pac-12 Networks, 13 on ESPN/ESPN2/ ESPNU and 3 on Fox Sports 1. This marks a new visibility standard for the Utes who were on an ESPN channel a total of five times during the first three years in the Pac-12. It also eclipses the program mark set by the 1999-2000 and 2003-04 teams who were on an ESPN channel 12 times during their respective regular seasons.

The men’s basketball program was one of eight Utah teams to achieve a perfect score of 1,000 in the single-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) from the NCAA in 201213. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation of all student-athletes on scholarship, and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance. The Utes also improved their Graduation Success Rate (GSR) to 88 percent in 2013-14, tops among all Pac-12 programs. The GSR is regarded as a more accurate reflection of athletic-academic success due to the fact it does not penalize an institution for studentathletes who transfer to another school while in good academic standing or go on missions, and it also tracks mid-year enrollees and some non-scholarship athletes. Brandon Taylor was selected to the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-District Men’s Basketball Team. Utah had seven players named to the NABC Academic Honors Court in 2013-14: Dallin Bachynski, Austin Eastman, Renan Lenz, Jeremy Olsen, Xan Ricketts, Brandon Taylor and Dakarai Tucker. Five Runnin’ Utes were named Academic All-Pac-12 Conference. Olsen and Taylor made the first team, while Bachynski, Lenz and Tucker earned honorable mention. As a team in 2013-14, the Utes had eight players named to the U.’s Academic Honor Roll (3.0 GPA) and four make the Dean’s List (3.5 GPA). 2014-15 UTAH BASKETBALL | 39

UTAH’S GREATEST TOP TEAMS AAU National Champions – 1916

After the Utes beat the defending national champion Olympic Club of San Francisco by 20 points on March 1 in Salt Lake City, a groundswell of support raised enough money to send the team to Chicago in search of a national title. The Utes defeated the Olympic Club again in the semifinals and took down the Illinois Athletic Club, 28-27, for its first national title and an 11-0 season.

»

NCAA Runner-Up – 1998

Utah took down defending national champion Arizona, 76-51, in the West Regional final and No. 1-ranked North Carolina, 65-59, in the national semifinals at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The Runnin’ Utes fell to Kentucky in the title game as a deep Wildcat team overcame a doubledigit second half deficit. Utah, led by head coach Rick Majerus and All-Americans Andre Miller and Michael Doleac, tied the school record with 30 wins.

NCAA Tournament Success

»

NCAA Champions – 1944

The Utes were invited to both the NIT and the NCAA Tournament at the end of the 1944 season, but chose the former. At the time, the NIT was a much better tournament financially. After Utah lost to Kentucky in the NIT first round, head coach Vadal Peterson received a phone call from the NCAA asking them to participate in their tournament as a late fill-in for Arkansas, which was involved in an automobile accident. The Utes quickly accepted and headed to Kansas City, where they beat Missouri and Iowa State to advance to the championship game back in New York’s Madison Square Garden. Utah defeated Dartmouth, 42-40 in overtime, to win the title. A few days later in a Red Cross Benefit game, Utah defeated NIT champion St. John’s, 43-36.

NIT Champions – 1947 »

The Utes won the three games in the tournament by a total of seven points and took down Kentucky, 49-45, in the championship game. The starters from the 1947 NIT title team were (left to right) Wat Misaka, Fred Weidner, Arnie Ferrin, Vern Gardner and Leon Watson. Ferrin, Misaka and Dick Smuin were veterans of the ’44 NCAA Championship run but center Vern Gardner garnered tournament MVP honors. Fred Weidner also played a major part in the championship.

RUNNIN’ UTES IN THE COMMUNITY

Utah players, coaches and staff gathered for the Huntsman Cancer Center 5K run last fall.

Runnin’ Ute players took part in the annual Fan Fest event last August at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

T

he Utah men’s basketball team makes dozens of public appearances each year and gives back to the Salt Lake City community in numerous ways. In the past year, the Runnin’ Utes have taken part in Utah Athletics’ Fan Fest, the University of Utah Healthcare cancer awareness event, the Huntsman Cancer Center 5K, Fan Appreciation Night at the Campus Store, delivering season tickets to Utah fans, and helping U. students move into the dorms through the Runnin’ Utes Move U event. They have also recently taken part in the U.’s Employee Appreciation Day, a MUSS and student lunchtime event on campus, a Holiday Food Drive with the Utah Food Bank, Christmas gift deliveries with the Utah Foster Care Foundation, visiting the VA Hospital, and delivering sandwiches and water on a regular basis to the homeless in Salt Lake City.

Utah players appeared at the Fan Appreciation Night at the Campus Store in late September.

As a way to say “thanks,” Runnin’ Ute players personally delivered 2014-15 season tickets to some of their fans.

The Runnin’ Utes went through a Navy SEAL training course in September.

Team Building

The Runnin’ Utes were on hand for the U of U Healthcare cancer awareness event at City Creek Center. 44 | 2014-15 UTAH BASKETBALL

In close games and hostile environments, mental and physical toughness are critical for a team. With the goal of changing the team’s mindset, head coach Larry Krystkowiak added some activities to the team’s offseason training regimen. During the off season, the Utes went through a Navy SEAL training course in order to toughen them up while also improving the way in which they work together. The drills focused on cooperation, and one of the big takeaways from the training was a traditional military axiom: “Two is one and one is none.”

Endowed scholarships can be established to remember a family member, to honor a favorite coach, to connect your family to the Utes or for many additional reasons. SCHOLARSHIP CIRCLE

The Scholarship Circle is a group of Crimson Club Athletic Fund members – individuals and companies – who generously support studentathletes at the University of Utah by providing full and annual scholarships. Scholarship Circle members are a key part in building the Utah Athletic Department as a whole. The department’s success depends on contributions to stay competitive and relevant. The Scholarship Circle is essential in meeting growing costs of student-athletes for recruiting, housing, tuition, meals, travel, etc. Making this investment means building stronger programs for all sports and you are making a difference in our success.

2015 BASEBALL SEASON OUTLOOK Striking A Balance

The 2015 Utes will feature a nice mix hitting, pitching and defense; and youth and experience.

Arizona State, Oregon and Stanford, along with Oklahoma State in non-conference action. Highlighting non-conference play is the Pac-12/Big 12 Challenge, with the Utes facing Kansas State, Kansas and Oklahoma in addition to Oklahoma State. The Utes also have a three-game series against Kansas. The Utes got underway on Feb. 13 in a four-game series at Sacramento State, and have their first home game of the year on March 17 vs. Utah Valley. Pac-12 teams visiting Salt Lake City this season include California (March 27-29), Arizona State (April 2-4), Washington State (April 24-26), USC (May 1-3) and Oregon (May 15-17). Southeastern Louisiana also visits SLC (April 10-12) and Utah hosts two of three games this year against in-state rival BYU (March 24, May 12). The Utes are scheduled to have 17 games televised on the Pac-12 Networks.

Infield

Outfielder Wyler Smith had the team’s longest hitting streak of 10 games and tied for the team lead with 13 multiple-hit games in 2014. By Brooke Frederickson Utah Athletics Communications

A

t first glance, the 2015 Utah baseball team looks young. The Utes have just two seniors on the roster, with 14 freshmen joining the team. However, many of the juniors and sophomores on the team have significant playing experience with numerous starts under their belts. “We do have 14 freshmen on the team, which strikes you as being young, but seven or eight of our offensive and position players played basically every day last year, so it doesn’t seem like we’re very young out there,” Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. “Two of our starting pitchers are back, so that doesn’t make me feel like we’re very

young either. However, if we have some injuries, that’s where our youth comes in. Our backups are young players. Those guys will get some playing experience this year. At this point, I feel pretty good about their progress, and the maturity of our guys who have played the last few years and the roles they are taking.” Key returning players include junior Kody Davis, who started every game last year at second base, and Wyler Smith, who also played every game last year in the outfield.

Schedule

The 2015 schedule features five teams that are currently ranked in one of the preseason baseball polls: Pac-12 foes UCLA,

Davis hit .237 for the Utes last year and led Utah in walks (28) while tying for the team lead and sixth in the Pac-12 in stolen bases (12). Other returning players joining Davis in the infield include junior Cody Scaggari at shortstop, who has started 59 games over the past two seasons. He hit .288 in an injury-shortened season last year with a .370 on-base percentage. Redshirt sophomore Dallas Carroll, who was sidelined last year after breaking his collarbone in the first game of the season, hit .282 in 28 games his freshman year and will start at third base. “Dallas, Kody and Cody staying healthy and being in the lineup is going to be key for us,” Kinneberg said. “They are going to hit 1-2-3 and will be important both offensively and defensively. They are probably the most important guys we have, as far as making sure they are in the lineup day in and day out.” Several players could see time at first base. Sophomore Hunter Simmons made 27 starts in the outfield last year, hitting .198 with four doubles. Senior Biss Larsen hit .209 in 2014 and has played in 73 games in three years with 47 starts between first base, third base and designated hitter. Newcomers battling for a position include junior transfer Kellen Marruffo from Pima Community College and freshman Wade Gulden out of Redding, Calif. Other infield backups include Kyle Hoffman, who redshirted as a freshman last year. “First base may be a platoon situation, or a guy will win the spot outright,” Kinneberg said. “Wade is the swing guy who can play all four positions and he adds 2014-15 UTAH BASKETBALL | 79

2015 BASEBALL SEASON OUTLOOK Pitchers

Second baseman Kody Davis led Utah with 28 walks while ranking sixth in the Pac-12 with 12 stolen bases in 2014. another left-handed bat, which is why he’s looking at first.”

Outfield

Two of Utah’s three outfield starters return in Smith (center field) and sophomore Josh Rose (right field). Smith hit .259 last year with three triples, five stolen bases and 17 RBI. He had the team’s longest hitting streak (10 games) and tied for the team lead with 13 multiple-hit games. Josh Rose made 24 starts in the outfield, hitting .188 with three home runs and 11 RBI. Several freshmen are batting for an open spot in left field. Jayson Rose and Andre Jackson, both who are also looking at roles on the pitching mound, are among the players with an opportunity to earn the starting role. Jayson Rose (brother of teammate Josh) was a first-team all-state player at Granite Hills High School in California. Jackson was a 32nd round pick to the Texas Rangers in the 2015 MLB Draft out of Cienega High School in Arizona. Armett Johnson was ranked as one of the top 75 players in California by scouting service Perfect Game at Crespi Carmelite High School. Neil Sterling is from Serra High School in California. “I feel very confident with our returning

guys, both on the offensive and defensive side,” Kinneberg said of Smith and Josh Rose. “In left field, we may platoon, we may play the hot hand, we may play the best defensive guy, or whatever situation may arise. Jayson Rose has won it at this point. We don’t know what roles Jayson Rose and Andre will fill yet with them also pitching. But we have to find that third and fourth outfielder.”

Catcher

Behind the plate, junior AJ Young has started 54 games between catcher and designated hitter over the past two years. He hit .203 in an injury-shortened season last year with a .372 on-base percentage. Sophomore Max Schuman made 25 starts at designated hitter as a freshman and also played in the outfield with one start at catcher, hitting .212 over 45 games with 18 RBI, two triples and a home run. Cole Taylor redshirted last year as a freshman. “We have three players we are going to count on behind the plate,” Kinneberg said. “AJ will be the starter, and there is a battle for the second spot between Max and Cole. Cole has really improved offensively and has worked very hard defensively to get himself into the mix.”

Pitching is one of the areas that was hardest hit among the key losses, with Mitch Watrous, Tanner Banks and Nick Green all going in the MLB draft. Juniors Dalton Carroll and Bret Helton, as well as senior Brock Duke (who has sat out most of the past two seasons after Tommy John surgery), return the most starts and innings. Carroll went 1-5 last year with a 5.31 ERA in 15 appearances and 11 starts. He allowed just 11 walks, which was the second-fewest in the Pac-12, with 38 strikeouts. Helton made 17 appearances with eight starts, going 2-4 with a 4.99 ERA and one save, recording 35 strikeouts. Duke is 10-11 with four saves in his career with a 5.52 ERA, making 53 appearances with 27 starts. “Dalton and Bret head the staff or us, as far as guys who have thrown a lot of innings,” Kinneberg said. “Brock Duke is back and we need to find the role for him. Whether he’s going to start or be in the bullpen, we don’t quite know yet, but he’ll throw significant innings.” Sophomore Dylan Drachler was second on the team in appearances last year (22) and went 1-2 with a 7.98 ERA and 30 strikeouts. Sophomores Dustin Hughes and Hunter Rodriguez both saw innings as freshmen last season. Another player who will see innings is junior Nolan Stouder, who redshirted last year after transferring from the College of Southern Idaho, where he earned all-region honors. Several freshmen are expected to play key roles on the mound, beginning with Jayson Rose, who is expected to both pitch and play in the outfield, as well as Spencer Johnson (Northgate High School in California), Tanner Thomas (Grandview High School in Colorado) and Trenton Stoltz (Paradise Valley High School in Phoenix, Ariz.). In addition to Rose, Andre Jackson will also both pitch and play in the outfield. “Jayson Rose has established himself as one of the top guys on our team,” Kinneberg said. “We’re hoping Drachler is in the mix as far as a starting role is concerned. Nolan Stouder, who was out for us last year, has really done a nice job of getting healthy and getting back into it. The other four freshmen are going to really add depth to our bullpen and our staff. “Our depth on our pitching staff has been far greater than it’s ever been, it’s just a matter of lining up roles for everybody and finding what’s going to work best for us,” Kinneberg continued.
