ven when things are well-thought out over a number of years, in the moment it can still be tough to execute a plan. That was the situation for Parker Van Dyke during his freshman year at Utah. After being named the 2013 Utah Class 4A

Player of the Year at Salt Lake City East High School, Van Dyke, who grew up cheering for the Runnin’ Utes, was living out a dream. The 6-3 guard played in 23 games as a freshman in 2013-14 and was gaining valuable experience. He also knew that with a lot of players coming back from a group that made the NIT postseason tournament, Utah had the potential to enjoy tremendous success over the next few years. However, Van Dyke’s life was about more than

just basketball. As a member of the LDS church, Van Dyke had also planned to serve a two-year mission for as long as he could remember. As difficult as it was to leave his team behind, Van Dyke stayed with his plan and put his basketball career on hold for two years. “It was hard to leave Utah,” said Van Dyke. “I always knew I was going to serve a mission but I also knew how good the team was going to be that next year and the year after as well. We had a lot of guys returning. Overall, it was what was best for me and I enjoyed my mission.” Van Dyke served his mission in Birmingham, Ala., and was able to get updates on the team throughout. He only heard great things. After a few years of building under Larry Krystkowiak, the Runnin’ Utes had grown into a Top-25 program that advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2015 NCAA Tournament. A year later, the Utes were Pac-12 runner-ups and made an NCAA second round appearance. Instead of being disappointed he wasn’t a part of things, hearing about the Utes’ success actually made Van Dyke’s mission easier. He felt good with where he was and was excited to come back. “First off, I was really excited to hear about the great news. It was always something that made me really happy to hear about. And it did get me excited to come back to a program that had been established, that had been in the NCAA Tournament, and had been one of the top teams in the Pac-12. It got me excited because when I got home I could be a part of it as well,” Van Dyke said. Serving his mission stateside not only made it easier for him to keep tabs on the Utes, he was also able to pick up a ball and work on his game from time to time. “There are a lot of gyms around and stuff like that,” explained Van Dyke. “I was able to stay a little bit familiar with basketball and stay in shape somewhat. It was nothing like Pac-12 level conditioning though.” With that being the case, getting his body back into shape so that he could compete at a Pac-12 level was the hardest part of Van Dyke’s return. That process was compounded by the fact that he, even though he had lived in Utah his entire life, was struggling to catch his breath at times upon his return to Salt Lake City’s higher elevation. Fortunately, he was able to get some one-onone time with the Ute coaches after his return during the offseason. He also had full access to the gym in Utah’s new training facility and has gotten himself into the best shape of his life. Overall, Van Dyke says it was a smooth transition. Another adjustment that he had to make was Parker Van Dyke (continued on page 6)

RUNNIN’ UTE PLAYER FEATURE coming home to a brand new team. All of the players he played with his freshman year have all graduated, players like Utes Brandon Taylor and Jordan Loveridge. Van Dyke is excited to see what this team has in store for the season. “It has been great adjusting to the new team. A lot of new guys,” Van Dyke said. “It is a completely different team but the talent is there and the character is there. It has been easy to get along with them and play with them. I am excited to be a teammate with them.” One part of the transition back to college life that has gone smoothly is getting back into his coursework. Van Dyke left Utah having already gained a feel for the student-athlete life, but now he feels he is much better at organizing his time. “I think the great thing with a mission is that I was always very busy,” Van Dyke pointed out. “I was always doing something. I was always either serving or teaching or studying. I think I became a better student because of my mission. Although I wasn’t taking classes, I gained better study habits. Now that I am home, I feel like I am a better student and I don’t procrastinate as much. I work harder on all of my school work.” While Van Dyke had other scholarship offers coming out of high school and would have been able to go somewhere else after his mission without having to sit out a year, he always knew Utah was where he’d end up. “I have always been a Utah guy,” Van Dyke explained with a smile. “When I committed here originally, I knew this was the place that I was going to be and stay. I couldn’t be any happier being here. I remember it being like a dream come true my first time playing in the Huntsman Center.” Van Dyke’s family certainly made his decision easier. His grandpa, dad and older brother were always with him at games cheering on the Utes while he was growing up. Van Dyke remembers seeing some of the greatest players in Utah history play on the court he now calls home. Van Dyke claims that there isn’t just one person who motivates him. He says he has been fortunate to grow up with people who support him in any decision he makes, and they were with him 100 percent when he decided to play his freshman year and then leave to go on his mission. They were also there when he returned, helping him readjust to his life as a student-athlete. “I have had great people around me, from my family to my coaches, to friends and people in my community who have really helped,” Van Dyke explained. “People like my dad, my older brother and my grandpa have been people who are always there

for me, as well as my mom. I have been lucky.” As a Utah native, Van Dyke is bummed that the Utes won’t play BYU this year, but he is excited for that to happen in the future. But one game he is especially excited for is Arizona. “It is always a great time playing against a team like Arizona,” Van Dyke said. “They are always a top-10, even a top-5 team. When we go there or when they come here, it is always a good game. I am always looking forward to playing the better competition.” Before games, Van Dyke says that he doesn’t have any rituals, but he always makes sure to have a good meal and take a nap. He also tries to stay as relaxed as possible. “I have been playing basketball pretty much my whole life. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t

playing but I don’t remember exactly when I started. It has been a part of my life since I was born. It has just been in my family. Van Dyke has a few goals would like to accomplish as a player. There are also some things he hopes to accomplish with this brand new team. “Every player on the team has a specific role, so I just want to produce in my role,” Van Dyke explained. “Whether that is guarding my guy defensively or hitting an open shot on offense, I just want to be my best in my specific role. “As a team, we have made the NCAA Tournament two years in a row. We didn’t make it when I was a freshman. That’s something I have always wanted to do. That is a goal for us, to not only make it into the tournament but to win and advance.”

BUSINESS SCHOOL

In 2015, the U.’s entertainment arts and engineering program was ranked first in the country for the second time in three years. The University’s School of Computing, which earned a top 60 world ranking in 2016, was founded in 1965 and began a pioneering legacy in computer graphics and visualization that continues today. The internationallyrecognized Scientific Computing & Imaging Institute is a leader in creating new scientific computing techniques, tools and systems to help solve wideranging challenges of human life. The College of Engineering’s undergraduate program was ranked 56th and the graduate school was 51st according to U.S. News & World Report in 2016.

The David Eccles School of Business’ undergraduate program has been rated among the top 50 by U.S. News & World Report in the past three years. The Executive MBA program was ranked 22nd in the nation by Financial Times. The school also has been ranked in the top 25 the past five straight years for entrepreneurship by the Princeton Review. The U.’s graduate accounting program was rated top 35 in the nation in 2016.

MEDICINE University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics, a Level I trauma center, was ranked No. 1 in the nation in quality, safety and accountability in 2016. It marked the seventh-straight year that UUHC ranked among the nation’s top 10 academic medical centers in quality, safety and accountability. The U. also ranks No. 36 on the list of Top 50 Best Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy Schools. Its surgeons were the first in the world to conduct a permanent artificial heart implant in 1982. More recently, the Utah Genome Project is one of several innovative medical research programs at the U. Other notable programs include the nationally-recognized Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Clinical Neurosciences Center and the Moran Eye Center.

LAW SCHOOL The S.J. Quinney College of Law, which opened a new building in the fall of 2015, was ranked 16th by both National Jurist and PreLaw Magazine for practical training in 2016. Pre Law rated Utah in the top 10 for its public interest and public defender/ prosecutor programs, and gave it an “A” grade in environmental law.

CAMPUS LIFE A lively residential living experience is provided in the beautiful Heritage Commons, which served as the Athletes Village for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. The Donna Garff Marriott Honors Residential Scholars Community opened in September 2012, while the George S. Eccles Student Life Center had its grand opening in January 2015. The Lassonde Studios will open in the fall of 2016, housing student entrepreneurs in a living-learning space. The U. is home to the state’s natural history and fine arts museums, and well as premier concert and theater venues: Kingsbury Hall, Libby Gardner Hall, Pioneer Memorial Theater, and Red Butte Garden.

egarded as one of the top college arenas in the nation since opening its doors in 1969, the Jon M. Huntsman Center has provided an imposing home advantage for Utah teams the past 46 years. A landmark on the U. campus, the Jon M. Huntsman Center is the perfect place to watch a sporting event. With 15,000 chair seats (8,000 for volleyball and women’s basketball) assuring a great view from anywhere in the arena, the Huntsman Center is the largest venue in the Pac-12 Conference. The Huntsman Center underwent a $6 million renovation in the summer of 2014. The original ceiling cloud was replaced with a super grid structure. Energy efficient LED arena lighting, which accommodates instant on and off, was installed. A new state-of-theart sound system and ceiling mounted sound panels provide greater clarity. The project also included a draping system, offering a more intimate setting in the arena’s lower bowl for smaller events. New banners were hung to honor Utah’s all-time greatest teams and retired jerseys, and a maple wood floor was installed with an updated graphics and color scheme. New LED concourse lighting has been put in and the walls of the lower bowl were wrapped with new graphics. A $1.3 million center-hung video board and scoreboard was installed in the fall of 2007. It features an LED ring by Optotech and four LCD video screens. The locker rooms have also been renovated in recent

years, funded in part by donations from former Ute basketball All-Americans Andrew Bogut and Andre Miller totaling $325,000. Underground tunnels stretching 2,220 feet connect the arena with the four-building HPER complex, which underwent an extensive renovation before the 2015-16 season. The $36 million project included the new Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Center, which houses the men’s and women’s basketball programs, and the Sorenson Legacy Foundation High

Performance Center, a state-of-the-art sports medicine and strength & conditioning facility. More than eight million fans have watched the Runnin’ Utes in the Huntsman Center, where the team is 593-145 (.803) all-time with winning records in 41 of the last 42 seasons—including eight undefeated campaigns. Utah averaged 13,053 fans per home game in 2015-16, which ranked second in the Pac-12. It was also the highest mark since the 1999-2000 season and the eighth largest average in school history.

he Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility, a state-of-the-art, $36 million, 101,000-square-foot structure, opened northeast of the Huntsman Center arena on Oct. 1, 2015. The four-story building features a legacy hall, separate glass-enclosed upper levels for both the men’s and women’s programs, and a rooftop terrace. The ground floor entrances to the facility lead into the Kem and Carolyn Gardner Legacy Hall. Banners bearing images of the former Ute basketball greats hang from a 38-foot-high ceiling. A pictorial history of the men’s and women’s basketball programs lines the walls alongside a massive 30-foot raised circle and feather logo. The 6,000-square-foot hall is bathed in natural light from clearstory windows. Expansive viewing balconies overlooking the men’s and women’s practice gymnasiums are accessible via Legacy Hall. The configuration of both gyms is ideal for practice because it allows coaches to run five simultaneous drills without impacting one another. The courts are an exact replica of the one in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The gymnasiums also contain a video editing area, courtside taping tables and cardio equipment. A glass-enclosed yoga room shared by both teams overlooks the women’s practice court. Other features of level one include a shared space for pre-game meals and donor functions. Both teams have separate theaters complete with projection screens and whiteboard walls, as well as player lounges with six 55-inch televisions, custombuilt furniture and gaming consoles. The team locker rooms, which are 700-square-feet in size, are also found on level one. In addition to custom lockers, showers and restrooms, they boast in-ground hot and cold tubs that face 80-inch television screens. The women’s and men’s basketball offices, recruiting lounges, conference rooms and coaches’ lounges are located on levels three and four, respectively. All assistant coaches have window offices 12

and private balconies. Across the hall are offices for administrative and video staff. The head coaches have L-shaped 935-squarefoot offices encased in floor-to-ceiling glass with private balconies. They are equipped with fireplaces, 60-inch televisions that retract into the ceiling when not in use, and surround sound. Above level four is a rooftop terrace, bordered by a garden with low-water and drought-resistant plants, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountain ranges, the University of Utah campus, downtown Salt Lake City and the Great Salt Lake. It includes a fire pit, gas grill and Utah-themed patio furniture. A series of existing tunnels connects level one to the HPER facilities, the Sorenson High Performance Center and Burbidge Family Athletics-Academic Center—which serve all of Utah’s student-athletes— as well as the Jon M. Huntsman Center. “I truly feel that the Huntsman Basketball Facility is one of the nicest facilities on the planet,” said head men’s basketball coach Larry Krystkowiak. “I have been around a lot of the facilities in the country at both the NCAA and NBA levels, and this is the nicest. I say that not only because it is ours, but because the unrivaled amenities inside are complimented by the spectacular views in every direction.” Added women’s basketball coach Lynne Roberts, “From a standpoint of taking care of student-athletes

and showing them how important men’s and women’s basketball is at Utah, there’s no better statement than this facility. It is truly unbelievable and is going to be a huge asset for us in recruiting. We’ve been able to walk recruits through it already and they are picking their chin off of the ground the entire time. It’s the definition of a ‘wow’ factor.” The Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility was built in conjunction with the state-of-theart Sorenson High Performance Center, which opened in May 2015. The 20,000-square foot facility has conditioning and strength training space; an athletic training, rehabilitation and hydrotherapy area; and a refueling/nutrition station.

SORENSON HIGH PERFORMANCE CENTER

he state-of-the-art Sorenson Legacy Foundation High Performance Center, a two-story, 20,000-square-foot structure located northwest Jon M. Huntsman Center, opened in the summer of 2015. The facility provides everything a student-athlete needs to achieve their peak level of performance— ranging from nutrition, strength and conditioning, sports medicine and rehabilitation, and sports psychology—all within close proximity to maximize time efficiency. The ground floor features a 9,500-square-foot sports medicine facility and a 500-square-foot fueling station, while an expansive 10,000-squarefoot strength and conditioning center resides on the top floor. Two exterior entrances are located off the southeast corner of the building, while a refurbished tunnel system connects the performance center to the existing HPER complex, the Jon M. Huntsman Center and the new Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility. The new sports medicine area features 18 treatment tables—including one traction

table—six taping stations, a hydrotherapy area, a functional rehabilitation space and cardio area, and three exam rooms. The rehab area features Optojump and forceplate machines, and a Delos postural proprioception system. A pair of Wattbikes and two Alter-G treadmills, which use air pressure to alleviate body weight so that athletes can start conditioning earlier after injury, are also included. The treatment area offers several modalities, including Game Ready, Dynatron with thermoprobe, Diathermy Hivamat, and NormaTec recovery systems. The expansive hydrotherapy area includes a plunge pool in the shape of a block U, half containing cold water and half hot water with a capacity of 20 people per side. It also houses a Hydroworks 2000 underwater treadmill equipped with cameras and television monitors, allowing athletes to watch their subsurface work. Six offices for the full-time staff and one office for graduate assistants are also included,

as well as an area to make custom orthodics, mouthpieces and splints. The second-floor strength and conditioning center has 12 work stations, allowing athletes to train efficiently in a sport-specific program. It also includes a PLAE turf running surface, measuring five yards wide by 35 yards in length. Agility and plyometric sprinting drills performed in this area allow athletes to enhance movement patterns that transfer to their sport. Keiser air pressurized equipment has been installed, allowing for greater training variation while providing instant feedback of athletes’ movement power. The strength and conditioning center also includes Woodway treadmills, a Hammer Strength line, and a variety of other means to maximize athletes’ performance. The fueling station, located adjacent to the lobby area on the ground floor, offers a variety of snacks to help athletes intake the necessary levels of carbs and proteins within the critical 30-minute window after a workout to help their bodies recover.

UTAH TRADITIONS

he University of Utah officially adopted the nickname “Utes” for its athletic teams in 1972. The school uses the nickname with permission of the Ute Tribal Council. “What is a Ute?” The Utes are a great basin Indian tribe. The Utes were one of the first tribes to acquire the horse from the Spanish, which transformed their culture and enabled them to become resourceful and valiant. The Utes speak their own language that is derived from the Uto-Aztecan language family. Currently, there are more than 3,000 Ute tribal members and half of them live on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation in northeastern Utah. The Utes are important contributors to Utah’s economy through

distribution of their energy resources and raising stock. The Utah Pep Band, a 65-member group, keeps Utah fans’ spirits high in the stands at basketball, gymnastics and volleyball contests, performing for over 50 events a year to upwards of 75,000 people. Like the Utah Marching Band, the Pep Band offers students the opportunity to serve as ambassadors for the U. at home games, as well as Pac-12 Conference and NCAA basketball tournament games. Both music and non-music majors perform contemporary, pop and jazz band music during time out slots at basketball games and during rotations at gymnastic meets, and before and after events at both, creating a lively, fun atmosphere. The Block U (elevation 5,300 feet above sea level) was built on Mount Van Cott bordering the Utah campus in 1907. Lights on the 100-foot-tall landmark are illuminated primarily for athletic events and notify people in the Salt Lake valley that the Utes are playing at home (the lights flash after a Utah victory). Originally built with limestone, the Block U was later replaced by a cement version. In 1969, the design was modified and 124 lights were installed. A fundraising campaign in 2006 raised $400,000 to renovate the aging landmark. Slabs of concrete and steel rebar now reinforce the 5,000 feet of surface area. Another major improvement was the installation of light emitting diode (LED) red and white lights, which are controlled through a wireless system. The MUSS currently sponsors fan clubs for the Utah football, men’s basketball, volleyball and gymnastics teams. The name MUSS was originally derived from the school fight song lyrics (“… No

other gang of college fans dare meet us in the muss”). Members now refer to MUSS as an acronym for “Mighty Utah Student Section.” MUSS members are easily identified by their customized t-shirts and their policy of standing throughout the entire game. The MUSS turned 15 years old this season. Originally known as the Student Fan Club and the Utah Fan Club, the group adopted the name MUSS for the 2002 football season. Watch for the MUSS to regularly “Throw up a U,” a tradition that began at the Utah women’s gymnastics meets in 2001 and soon caught on with all the Ute teams and fans. It involves forming the U with their hands and raising it toward the sky.

Named as the 15th President in 2012, President Pershing leads a diverse team of faculty and staff as the chief executive at one of the world’s top research universities. President Pershing joined the University of Utah as an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering in 1977. He was named a Presidential Young Investigator by the National Science Foundation in 1984, became Dean of the College of Engineering in 1987, and was named a Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering in 1995. In 1998, Dr. Pershing became the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs responsible for approximately 1,000 faculty and 25,000 students in the colleges of the main campus. Now, as President, Dr. Pershing continues his commitment to the undergraduate experience with initiatives and

programs aimed at enriching academic excellence on campus. A gifted teacher and prolific researcher, President Pershing is the recipient of the University of Utah’s Distinguished Teaching and Distinguished Research Awards and the U’s Rosenblatt Prize for Excellence. He has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, won more than 20 research grants totaling approximately $60 million, and earned five patents. He was named Engineering Educator of the Year by the Utah Engineering Council in 2002 and is a winner of the Governor’s Medal for Science and Technology. He was director of the University of Utah’s Center for Simulation of Accidental Fires and Explosions, fueled by a $40 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. President Pershing holds a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona, both in chemical engineering.

ust 37 years old when he was appointed as Utah’s director of athletics, Chris Hill, Ph.D., has led the school’s athletics programs to unprecedented success since his hiring in October of 1987. Now in his 30th year at Utah, he is the nation’s longest actively tenured athletics director at the same school in the NCAA FBS. Hill’s most monumental accomplishment was spearheading Utah’s invitation to join the Pac-12 18

Conference in the summer of 2010, a move preceded by the football team’s historic BCS appearances in the 2004 and 2008 seasons. In its first five seasons in the “Conference of Champions,” Utah has won two titles in gymnastics, captured the 2016 baseball crown, and was the Pac-12 South Division co-champion in football in 2015. Utah has won nine NCAA team championships during Hill’s tenure—five by the ski team and four by the gymnastics team—and has finished as the national runner-up 16 times. Those runner-up finishes include a No. 2 national ranking by the football team after its victory over Alabama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl, and by the 1998 men’s basketball team. He has hired three coaches who won National Coach of the Year honors at Utah: football coaches Urban Meyer (2004) and Kyle Whittingham (2008), and men’s basketball coach Rick Majerus (1998). Hill has served on several national boards, including the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee (2004-09), chair of the NCAA Championships/Competition Cabinet (1997-98) and the NCAA Management Council Administrative Committee. He was on NACDA’s executive committee from 2002-06. The football program, which had not played in a bowl in the 22 years immediately preceding Hill’s appointment as athletics director, is 13-4 in bowl games during his term. Utah’s other athletic programs have also thrived under his leadership. The men’s basketball team has played in 15 NCAA Tournaments—advancing to the Sweet 16 six times and the Elite Eight twice. In 1998, the Runnin’ Utes played Kentucky for the NCAA Championship. The women’s basketball team has 15 NCAA appearances, playing in the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight in 2006, and was the 2013 WNIT runner-up. The gymnastics team has made 19 NCAA Super Six appearances while qualifying for the NCAA Championships all 29 years with Hill as AD—and the ski team has finished first or second in the nation 14 times under his watch. He has received a number of awards, including: 2011 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Under Armour West Region Athletic Director of the Year, finalist for the 2011 Athletic Director of the Year by SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily, 2011 Utah YMCA Man of the Year, 2004 Mountain West Conference’s Commissioner’s Award, 1981 Milton Bennion Fellowship, 1984 Utah Recreation Therapy Association Outstanding Service award and 1996 Utah MS Sportsperson of the Year. The former Rutgers’ basketball captain was inducted into the Jersey Shore Hall of Fame in 1998.

In 2001, the National Consortium for Academics and Sports awarded him its Degree Completion and Outreach and Community Service Honor Award. The New Jersey native has served in five capacities at the U., starting in 1973-74 as a graduate assistant basketball coach on Bill Foster’s staff. After coaching boys’ basketball at Salt Lake’s Granger High from 1975-79 (he was the 1975 4A Coach of the Year), Hill returned to the U. as an assistant coach to Jerry Pimm (1979-81). From 1983-85, he taught in the University’s special education department before coming back to athletics as the Crimson Club director (1985-86). In 1987, he became the director of athletics. Hill was the executive director of United Cerebral Palsy of Utah from 1981-85, during which time he developed a housing project for people with severe physical disabilities. As an undergraduate, Hill won three letters in basketball at Rutgers and co-captained the 1971-72 team. His bachelor’s degree from Rutgers is in math education (1972). He holds a master’s in education (Utah, 1974), and a Ph.D. in educational administration (Utah, 1982). His wife Kathy, a faculty member in the U.’s Department of Special Education in severe disabilities, received the 2010 College of Education Service Award and the 2012 ASUU Student Choice Award for Excellence in Teaching. They have two children, Aly and Christopher; three granddaughters, Addie, Lily and Ayumi, and a grandson, Jack. Aly played soccer for the University of Oregon and has a master’s degree in social work from Utah. She teaches students with severe disabilities in the Salt Lake City School District. Christopher holds a bachelor’s and law degree from the U. He works in business strategy for ESPN and is married to Darci Motoki, who received her bachelor’s degree from Boston College and her master’s degree from Claremont Graduate University. She is a consultant for Accenture.

arry Krystkowiak will embark on his sixth season as head coach of the Utah Runnin’ Utes when the team takes the floor in 2016-17. To label Krystkowiak’s rebuilding of the Utah program anything but successful would be an understatement. In five seasons at the helm of the Ute basketball program, Krystkowiak has accumulated 95 victories, which includes three consecutive 20-win seasons and a pair of NCAA Tournament berths. Krystkowiak helped guide Utah to a 27-9 overall record in 2015-16, which also led to his being named the US Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) District VIII Coach of the Year. Since winning just six games in his first season at Utah (2011-12), Krystkowiak has only added to the program’s win total after winning 15 games in 201213, 21 games in 2013-14 and 26 games in 2014-15. The former NBA veteran has increased the squad’s win total in Pac-12 play as well, having finished with 13 conference wins in each of the previous two seasons. The 2015-16 campaign ended with an unexpected loss to Gonzaga in the NCAA Round of 32, but that did not hamper what the Utes achieved over the course of the regular season. Utah defeated a top-seven ranked opponent for the first time since 2002 when the Utes earned an overtime-victory over No. 7 Duke at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y. The Utes also managed

to earn the program’s first two-game road sweep in Pac-12 play with wins over Washington State and Washington, while later in the season also picking up the program’s first win at UCLA since 1961. Utah opened the 2015-16 Pac-12 Conference slate with two straight losses and later fell to 1-3 in conference play following a home loss to Oregon. The Utes got off the mat to win five straight before dropping back-to-back games to Oregon State and Oregon, but Utah once again showed its resiliency, closing out the regular season with a program-best seven straight wins against the gauntlet that is known as the Pac-12 Conference. After earning the No. 2 seed in the Pac-12 Conference Championship Tournament, Utah again did something that the program has never done, earning a berth into the conference finals after posting wins over USC and California in the opening rounds. The 2015-16 regular season concluded with sophomore Jakob Poeltl earning Pac-12 Player of the Year honors – the program’s first POY since 2009 – and senior Brandon Taylor earning the program’s first-ever Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Poeltl would go on to be named the program’s second-consecutive all-American under Krystkowiak, while also taking home the Pete Newell Big Man of the Year and Kareem AbdulJabbar Center of the Year awards.

LARRY KRYSTKOWIAK Krystkowiak led the Utes to a 26-9 record, a berth in the Sweet 16 and a No. 15 final national ranking in 2014-15. Utah was ranked in the top 25 for 19 weeks – the most time spent in the national polls since the Final Four campaign of 1997-98. Utah also had its best finish since joining the Pac-12, placing third with a 13-5 conference mark and reaching the semifinals of the Pac-12 Tournament for the second time in three years. The Utes defeated Stephen F. Austin and Georgetown in the NCAA Tournament before losing to eventual national champion Duke in the Sweet 16, 63-57. Individually, Delon Wright won the Bob Cousy Award and was a Wooden All-American selection under Krystkowiak. The senior guard was also named a second team All-American by the USBWA and the NABC. Wright, Taylor and Poeltl garnered Pac-12 postseason honors. The Utes have also excelled in the classroom with Taylor being named a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree in 2014-15. Since 2012-13, the Utes have had 13 Pac-12 All-Academic selections, including six on the first team. Striving for success, both on and off the court, are trademarks of the Krystkowiak era and due to improvements in both areas, the Utah head coach was rewarded with a five-year contract extension that runs through the 2023-24 season. The resurgence of Utah basketball under Krystkowiak has also ignited Utah’s fan base. The Utes averaged more than 12,000 fans at home games in 2014-15 and nearly 13,000 fans in 2015-16. Utah ranked second in the Pac-12 and No. 24 in the nation in home

attendance in 2015-16, accumulating nearly 221,000 fans on the season. In 2013-14, Krystkowiak guided the Utes to their first postseason appearance since 2009 and surpassed the 20-win mark. Wright, in his first season under Krystkowiak’s tutelage, went on to earn First Team All-Pac-12 and All-Defensive Team honors, a precedent for Utah men’s basketball in the Conference of Champions. Jordan Loveridge continued his development and finished among the top-12 in the league in scoring and rebounding and was Utah’s first Pac-12 Player of the Week. In 2012-13, Krystkowiak led Utah to the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals for the first time in program history and won two postseason games for the first time since winning the Mountain West Conference championship in 2009. The Utes also more than doubled their win total from the previous season by winning 15 games. Jason Washburn was named honorable mention All-Pac-12 becoming the first Ute to receive any postseason recognition since the team entered the league. Also, Olsen was named to the Pac-12’s AllAcademic First Team and became the first Ute to win scholastic honors since the switch in conferences. Krystkowiak was introduced on April 4, 2011 as the new men’s basketball coach at the University of Utah and the man to lead the Runnin’ Utes into the next phase of their storied history. Krystkowiak, who has prior head coaching experience in the NCAA, CBA and NBA, left a position as an assistant coach with the New Jersey Nets to become the 15th

head coach in Utah men’s basketball history. In his previous collegiate head coaching post, Krystkowiak led his alma mater, the University of Montana, to a 42-20 record and two NCAA appearances as the Grizzlies’ from 2004-06 before joining the NBA coaching ranks. Hired as an assistant coach by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2006-07, “Krysko” was elevated to head coach with 17 games remaining in the season. He was retained as the Bucks’ head coach in 2007-08. Among the players he coached was former Ute All-American Andrew Bogut. Krystkowiak’s other head coaching experience was in the CBA with the Idaho Stampede in 2003-04. After a nine-year NBA playing career in six cities, Krystkowiak’s first coaching job was as an assistant coach at Montana from 1998-2000. The Grizzlies were the Big Sky champions in 2000. He then moved on to Old Dominion as an assistant in 2001-02 before signing on as the head coach of the CBA’s Idaho Stampede. In his lone season with the Stampede in 2003-04, he led the team to a 38-14 record and a berth in the CBA Finals. Krystkowiak spent the next two seasons as the head coach at Montana. The Grizzlies were Big Sky champions in 2004-05, winning the conference tournament and earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. They appeared in the Big Dance in 2006 as well, earning an at-large bid and advancing to the second round with an upset victory over fifth-seed Nevada. It was UM’s first NCAA tournament win since 1975. Montana finished the season with a 24-7 record, after going 18-13 in Krystkowiak’s first season, losing to No. 1 seed Washington in the NCAA First Round. The only three-time Big Sky MVP in league history and two-time Academic All-American for Montana from 1982-86, Krystkowiak is still the school’s all-time career leader in points (2,017) and rebounds (1,105). He was selected in the second round (28th overall pick) of the 1986 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls and played in the league for nine years with San Antonio (1986-87), Milwaukee (1988-92), Utah (1992-93), Orlando (199394), Chicago (1994-96) and the Los Angeles Lakers (1996). Over his NBA career, he averaged 8.1 points and 4.1 rebounds a game with his best season in 1988-89 when he averaged 12.7 points and 7.6 rebounds a game for Milwaukee. Krystkowiak made the Dean’s List four times at Montana, including in 1996, when he completed the degree he began over a decade earlier in business administration. He graduated with honors, boasting a 3.5 grade point average. Krystkowiak and his wife Jan have five children, sons Cam, Luc, and Ben, along with twin daughters Samantha and Finley.

ASSISTANT COACHES players were named Academic All-Frontier Conference. Westminster led the nation with the most NAIA Scholar Athletes in back-to-back years from 2009-2011. Connor has been married to his wife Kathryn for over 25 years. He has a son, Jake, who will suit up for the Utes this season, as well as two daughters, Sydney and Cass.

Hill graduated from Eastern Washington in 2000 with a degree in education. He is married to Skye Lazaro of Hot Springs, Mont., and they have one son, Garrett.

TOMMY CONNOR Associate Head Coach

ommy Connor is in his sixth year as a Utah assistant coach under head coach Larry Krystkowiak. During the summer of 2014, Connor was elevated to the title of associate head coach. This is Connor’s second stint with the Utes, following four years as an assistant under the late Rick Majerus from 1994-97. Connor, a former Utah player (1986-88, 1990), returned to his alma mater after a very successful 12-year stint as the head coach at Westminster College (NAIA). Connor was a four-year starter for the Runnin’ Utes at point guard. After graduating with a B.S. in exercise and sport science, he spent three years as a graduate assistant and another four years as an assistant coach at Utah under Majerus. During his time on the bench, Connor helped guide Utah to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight as well as the NIT “Final Four”, while capturing four Western Athletic Conference championships. In a stellar 12-year career at Westminster, Connor led the Griffins to a 264-114 (.698) overall record, while proving even more dominant in Frontier Conference play with a 126-40 (.759) mark. Those numbers become more impressive when considering that Connor built the program from scratch after it was reinstated prior to the 1999-2000 season. Under Connor, Westminster posted 10 seasons with at least 20 wins, including nine straight from 2002-2011. The Griffins won seven regular-season Frontier Conference championships and two conference tournament titles. Connor was a five-time Frontier Conference Coach of the Year and his teams qualified for nine NAIA National Championship appearances. Connor coached 17 players to NAIA All-American status and had one NAIA National Player of the Year. The Griffins also had five players named Frontier Conference Player of the Year and saw 36 players earn all-conference honors. Westminster was also successful in the classroom as 44 players earned NAIA Scholar Athlete honors and 108 22

ANDY HILL Assistant Coach

ndy Hill is in his sixth year as an assistant coach with the Utes. He came to Utah from Montana, where he spent seven years in the same role, including two seasons under current Runnin’ Ute head coach Larry Krystkowiak. In his seven seasons at Montana, Hill helped the Grizzlies to three NCAA Tournament appearances, most recently in 2010, as well as a CBI bid in 2011. Montana also reached the Big Sky Conference Tournament championship game in four of his seven seasons. In Hill’s two years under Krystkowiak from 2004-06, Montana went 42-20 and earned an NCAA Tournament berth both years, advancing to the second round in 2006. Among Hill’s duties at Montana were assisting with scheduling of games, coordinating camps, oncourt coaching and recruiting. Additionally, he was instrumental in coordinating the annual coaching clinics and also worked closely with the fund-raising efforts of UM’s Roundball Club. Hill served as a graduate assistant coach during the 2003-04 season at Eastern Washington, which won the Big Sky Conference that year. While at EWU, Hill was involved in the promotion of the Eagles’ camps and assisted in recruiting as well. During the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons Hill served as an assistant at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho. In his two seasons, the Warriors advanced to consecutive NAIA National Tournaments. He was also an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., during the 2000-01 season.

DeMARLO SLOCUM Assistant Coach

eMarlo Slocum is now in his sixth year as an assistant coach with the Utes following a threeyear stint in the same position at Colorado State. In his now eight seasons overall at both Utah and CSU, Slocum has worked primarily with the guards and shared recruiting responsibilities. Before coming to Colorado State, Slocum served as an assistant coach at the University of Idaho. Prior to joining the Idaho Vandals, Slocum was the head coach of the Las Vegas Prospects AAU team for five years. During his tenure, the Prospects were ranked among the top five AAU teams on the west coast. Slocum has worked at various collegiate basketball development camps across America, as well as the West Coast All-Star Camp and the Adidas Superstar Camp. Slocum, a native of Las Vegas, also served one season as an assistant coach at Dixie State College before moving on to the University of Southern California to become the Trojans’ Director of Basketball Operations. In one season with USC, Slocum was in charge of on-campus recruiting, team travel, scouting and camp coordination. As a student-athlete, Slocum spent two years at Dixie State before playing his final two seasons at Georgia Southern, where he earned a degree in public recreation/kinesiology in 2001. During his junior season at Georgia Southern, he was the team’s second-leading scorer, before finishing fourth in scoring as a senior. Slocum just recently earned a master’s in educational leadership, receiving the degree from Grand Canyon University in the summer of 2016.

Jones played collegiately at Utah for two seasons (1993-94) and was part of the 1993 team that won the Western Athletic Conference regular season championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. hris Jones returns to the University of Utah, joining the men’s basketball program as the director of operations. A familiar face to the program, Jones previously served as the video coordinator for the Runnin’ Utes from 1995-97 under former head coach Rick Majerus. He later served as the director of ops during the 2004-05 season before making the move to the bench as an assistant coach from 2005-08. Jones was a member of the staff for Runnin’Ute teams that went to the NCAA second round in 1995, the Sweet 16 in ‘96 and 2005, the Elite Eight in ‘97. During that time, Utah had an 84-17 overall record and a 45-7 mark in WAC play, winning three regular-season championships. The Utes posted a 29-4 record in 1996-97, finishing the season ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press poll and No. 6 in the coaches poll. Jones helped develop All-Americans Keith Van Horn, Andre Miller and Michael Doleac. Jones spent the previous eight seasons as an assistant coach at Utah State where his primary duties included coaching the guards, as well as in-state recruiting. He was also in charge of a USU defense that led the Western Athletic Conference in points allowed four times in five years, and in field goal percentage defense for three out of five years. Jones began his coaching career in London as the head coach of Wurthing Bears from 1998-99 before spending three years as an instructor at Champions Athletic Academy. He then returned to the collegiate ranks as an assistant at Westminster College from

SCOTT McBYRNE Video Coordinator

cott McByrne is in his sixth year as the video coordinator for Utah men’s basketball. McByrne originally joined the Utes midway through the 2011-12 season after spending two seasons with the New Jersey Nets of the NBA. With the Nets, McByrne was an assistant video coordinator under head coach Avery Johnson from 2010-11 and an intern under previous head coach Lawrence Frank, from 2009-10. During the 2010-11 season McByrne also worked alongside current Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak, who was then an assistant coach with New Jersey. Other notable coaches McByrne has worked with include Popeye Jones, Del Harris, John Loyer, Sam Mitchell and Kiki Vandeweghe. McByrne is originally from Newtown, Pennsylvania, where he attended Council Rock High School South and was captain of the basketball team. He earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary social studies education from the University of Tampa in 2008.

revor Jameson is in his 18th year as an athletic trainer with the University of Utah. In 2008, he also accepted the position of director of sports medicine for the Utah athletic training program. His primary responsibility is working with the Runnin’ Ute basketball team. Before coming to Utah, Jameson spent four years as an assistant athletic trainer and instructor at DePauw University in Indiana. In addition to working with DePauw athletes, Jameson assisted in the development of the department’s CAAHEP accredited athletic training education program and provided clinical instruction for students. Prior to his appointment at DePauw, Jameson worked as a graduate assistant trainer at Indiana State University. Jameson received his master’s degree in athletic training from Indiana State in August of 1996 and earned the Outstanding Professional Award for his graduating class. Jameson received his bachelor’s degree in physical education and athletic training from Brigham Young University in 1995. He worked in the Cougar sports medicine department for over two years.

CHARLES STEPHENSON Strength Coach

harles Stephenson, who joined the Utah men’s basketball staff as the first basketball-specific strength coach in the program’s history, enters his fifth season with the Runnin’ Ute program. Stephenson brings nearly 25 years of experience as a strength coach at the collegiate level. Most recently, he was the strength coach for men’s basketball at North Carolina State from 1996-2011 and previously held the same position at Auburn from 1994-96. Prior to Auburn, he was an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Virginia from 1987-94. Stephenson earned his master’s degree in exercise physiology from UVA in 1989 and did his undergraduate work at the College of William & Mary, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. Stephenson and his wife, Diane, have four children, Tyler, Shea, Quinn and Carsyn.

Pac-12 Conference

Utah became a member of the Pac-12 Conference on July 1, 2011. Having earned the nickname “Conference of Champions,” the Pac-12 celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2015-16. The Pac12’s success is as evident in men’s basketball as any sport, where league teams have captured a record 16 NCAA Championships. The Pac-12 also lays claim to 38 NCAA Final Four appearances, 92 consensus All-Americans, 17 National Players of the Year, and 25 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame members. The Pac-12 has sent at least half of its teams on to postseason play 25 times in the last 27 years, with seven teams making the NCAA Tournament in 2016. During that time, 12 league players have garnered National Player of the Year or National Freshman of the Year honors.

Over the last nine years, 37 players from Pac-12 teams have gone on to become first round NBA Draft picks—including four in 2016. A total of 79 players have been selected since 2005. Below is a breakdown

Jakob Poeltl was named 2015-16 Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year, Jordan Loveridge and Brandon Taylor earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention, while Taylor also earned a spot on the Pac-12 AllDefensive Team. Poeltl earned a spot on the 10-person All-Pac-12 First Team, giving Utah a first-team selection three consecutive years following Delon Wright in 2014 and 2015. Poeltl led the conference with a .660 field goal shooting percentage, ranked second with 17.6 points per game and was third in the league with 9.1 rebounds per game.

Television Exposure

The 2016-17 Pac-12 Conference men’s basketball television package features 222 contests telecast to national and regional audiences. Pac-12 Conference controlled games include 151 games to be aired on the Pac-12 Networks (including eight Pac-12 Tournament games), 47 on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU (including three Pac-12 Tournament games), 20 games on FS1 and two each nationally on FOX and CBS broadcast networks. Additional appearances will be made through other conference television agreements and various in-season tournaments. All 30 of Utah’s regular season games will be televised this year with eight contests on the ESPN family of networks (ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU), four games on FS1/FOX, and 18 telecasts on the Pac-12 Networks. All of Utah’s games will also be streamed online via WatchESPN, FoxSportsGo, and Pac-12.com/live or the Pac-12 Now app.

Brandon Taylor Taylor Named Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Brandon Taylor was named the 2015-16 Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s basketball. A Pac12 All-Academic Team selection in both 2013-14 and 2014-15, Taylor maintained a 3.40 grade-point average as a psychology major at Utah. His senior year, Taylor earned Pac-12 All-Defensive Team and honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors while averaging 9.6 points and team-highs of 3.9 assists and 1.5 steals. #1 APR Rankings Utah basketball ranked first among Pac-12 members in the NCAA APR rankings released in 2016. The Utes had a perfect multi-year score of 1000 and earned a perfect single-year APR score of 1000 for a third straight year in 2015-16.

Classroom Champions

For everything the Runnin’ Utes have achieved on the court, they have been equally successful in the classroom. UTAH’S GREATEST TOP TEAMS AAU National Champions – 1916

After the Utes beat the defending national champion Olympic Club of San Francisco by 20 points on March 1 in Salt Lake City, a groundswell of support raised enough money to send the team to Chicago in search of a national title. The Utes defeated the Olympic Club again in the semifinals and took down the Illinois Athletic Club, 28-27, for its first national title and an 11-0 season.

NCAA Runner-Up – 1998

Utah took down defending national champion Arizona, 76-51, in the West Regional final and No. 1-ranked North Carolina, 65-59, in the national semifinals at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The Runnin’ Utes fell to Kentucky in the title game as a deep Wildcat team overcame a double-digit second half deficit. Utah, led by head coach Rick Majerus and All-Americans Andre Miller and Michael Doleac, tied the school record with 30 wins.

NCAA TOURNAMENT SUCCESS Final Four 1944, 1961, 1966, 1998

NCAA Champions – 1944

The Utes were invited to both the NIT and the NCAA Tournament at the end of the 1944 season, but chose the former. At the time, the NIT was a much better tournament financially. After Utah lost to Kentucky in the NIT first round, head coach Vadal Peterson received a phone call from the NCAA asking them to participate in their tournament as a late fill-in for Arkansas, which was involved in an automobile accident. The Utes quickly accepted and headed to Kansas City, where they beat Missouri and Iowa State to advance to the championship game back in New York’s Madison Square Garden. Utah defeated Dartmouth, 42-40 in overtime to win the title. A few days later in a Red Cross Benefit game, Utah defeated NIT champion St. John’s, 43-36.

NIT Champions – 1947

The Utes won the three games in the tournament by a total of seven points and took down Kentucky, 49-45, in the championship game. The starters from the 1947 NIT title team were (left to right) Wat Misaka, Fred Weidner, Arnie Ferrin, Vern Gardner and Leon Watson. Ferrin, Misaka and Dick Smuin were veterans of the ’44 NCAA Championship run but center Vern Gardner garnered tournament MVP honors. Fred Weidner also played a major part in the championship. 34

| RUNNIN’ UTES IN THE COMMUNITY

Runnin’ Ute players took part in the annual Fan Fest event last August at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

he Utah men’s basketball team makes dozens of public appearances each year and gives back to the Salt Lake City community in numerous ways. In the past few years, the Runnin’ Utes have taken part in Utah Athletics’ Fan Fest, the University of Utah Healthcare cancer awareness event, the Huntsman Cancer Center 5K, Fan Appreciation Night at the Campus Store, delivering season tickets to Utah fans, and helping U. students move into the dorms through the Runnin’ Utes Move U event. They have also recently taken part in the U.’s Employee Appreciation Day, a MUSS and student lunchtime event on campus, a Holiday Food Drive with the Utah Food Bank, Christmas gift deliveries with the Utah Foster Care Foundation, visiting the VA Hospital, and delivering sandwiches and water on a regular basis to the homeless in Salt Lake City.

Navy SEAL Training In close games and hostile environments, mental and physical toughness are critical for a team. With the goal of changing the team’s mindset, head coach Larry Krystkowiak has instituted some activities to the team’s offseason training regimen. The past three years during the offseason, the Utes went through a Navy SEAL training course in order to toughen them up while also improving the way in which they work together. The experience has created a catchphrase for the team that they plan to draw on throughout the season: “MUSSter Up.” The drills focused on cooperation, and one of the big takeaways from the training was a traditional military axiom: “Two is one and one is none.” 36

Embracing Expectations A talented and deep Ute men’s tennis team is aiming to make its first NCAA Tournament in 20 years.

In addition to the returning veterans, the Utes have added Joe Wolley, their top recruit from a year ago who becomes eligible, and Russian champion Svyatoslav Shainyan. The team has been supportive, encouraging, and has lifted each other up in difficult times. Even with the success of the fall, there are some aspects of the team’s play that Brateanu would like to improve on. “The only factor that will hold us back from getting to NCAAs this year is how we deal with some of the obstacles and challenges ahead. This team, if things go our way, is a team that can compete with anybody,” said Brateanu. “How we deal with a loss, how we deal with injury, that’s where the kind of grit and tenacity we have will show through. We’ve lost a lot of close matches to good teams, and we need to learn to be competitive and learn how to win in those types of matches. A lot of that has to deal with learning how to deal with adversity.”

ntering his third year as the head coach of the Utah men’s tennis program, former Ute player Roeland Brateanu looks to have this year’s team reach its full potential and continue their success from fall play. Utah returns a strong group of core players from a squad that went 17-10 last season, its best record since 1988. “My expectations are very simple: NCAAs,” Brateanu said. “The program hasn’t been there for 20 years. This is the most talented group we’ve had in a while, and they know what my expectations are as well. I think we are very deep. I really believe that every player on the team serves their purpose and serves their roll. With the talent we have this year, it is going to be very productive indeed.” Brateanu is expecting big things from sophomore David Micevski, sophomore Dan Little, and senior Parker McGuiness this season, and he believes they will be key pieces in the productivity of the team this year. “David Micevski, who is the highest returner from last year, is expected to play at the top of the lineup. It’s going to be a challenge for him, and we are looking forward to that challenge to see how he plays at the number one position. He is going to play against

the very best, and we expect him to finish the year nationally ranked,” Brateanu said. “Dan Little is our power player and our ace that we have in our hands. We are expecting a lot of great things from him. Parker McGuiness has had the best fall and the best semester of practice in his career. He has shown unbelievable leadership and he has also been one of the most dedicated on the team. We have high expectations for him this year, not only on the court but also in the leadership department. Those are the guys that you will see higher up in the lineup, and the guys I’m expecting big things from.” Also expect a productive season from juniors Santiago Sierra and Egbert Weverink. “Santiago is the most dedicated and committed player that we have on the team. He has the best results from the regional championships on the entire team. Unbelievable attitude, he is the type of guy that every coach wants on his team,” Brateanu said. “Egbert has tremendous potential, is a very hard worker, very organized individual, model student athlete. He is also our team captain. We’re trying to have him play big and have him be an offensive force. We are having him be less careful, more aggressive, and more go-getting out on the court. He is due for a tremendous break through. He is working way too hard to not be successful.”
