MEET NOTES MEET WEEK The No. 3-ranked Utah gymnasts (7-0, 3-0 Pac-12) return home to compete against No. 21 Oregon State (8-3, 3-0 Pac-12) after a two-meet road swing. The meet will be aired on the Pac-12 Networks and ESPN 700 radio. IN THE RANKINGS With yet another season-high score, Utah is ranked No. 3 in the nation for the second-straight week and is the highest ranked team among Pac-12 programs. The Utes are ranked No. 4 on beam, No. 6 on floor, and No. 8 on vault and bars. Inside the top-25 individually for Utah, Kim Tessen is No. 7 on bars and No. 22 on vault. Cristal Isa is also individually ranked on beam and is No. 16. FOR THE FANS Today’s meet is Character Day and kids are encouraged to wear costumes and dress as their favorite character. There will be 10 characters on the concourse pre-meet interacting with fans. The first 2,000 kids will receive an exclusive Red Utah Utes cape. The meet will also be the Utah gymnastics alumni meet. Megan Marsden will be recognized for her incredible achievements as a Ute gymnast and legendary coach. QUICK STICKS • Utah has improved their team, bars, beam and floor scores in every outing this year through five meets. • The Utes posted the third-highest beam score in the nation this season against California last week. The 49.625 beam score that won the meet for Utah only ranks behind Minnesota’s 49.700 earned on beam and Florida’s 49.675. • Utah is one of just three teams in the nation this season to have scores of 197 or higher in at least four meets. • Utah handed Cal its first home loss of the season last Saturday. The Golden Bears had not lost in Haas Pavilion in nearly two years with the last loss coming on Feb. 10, 2018. Dating back to the beginning of the 2017 season, Cal had won 17 of 19 meets on their home floor. • Utah has hit 115-120 routines this season. Gymnasts who have hit every routine are Maile O’Keefe (19-19), Alexia Burch (11-11), Abby Paulson (11-11), Emilie LeBlanc (10-10), Sydney Soloski (10-10), Adrienne Randall (9-9), Cammy Hall (5-5) and Hunter Dula (4-4). • Individual winners this season are Kim Tessen (6), Paulson (4), Soloski (4), Cristal Isa (3), O’Keefe (3), Burch (2), Dula (1), LeBlanc (1) and Randall (1).
BEAM QUEENS Utah’s beam lineup scored its highest score of the season (49.625) and the third highest score of the year across the nation when it mattered the most. Utah and Cal were tied heading into the final rotation, and thanks to a trio of 9.95s and the lowest score of 9.875 left to be dropped, the Utes surged ahead of Cal’s floor set to win the top-15 matchup on the road. Emilie LeBlanc and Alexia Burch each earned 9.875s to set the tone. Maile O’Keefe continued the hot start and added a season-high 9.95. Following a 9.90 from Cristal Isa, a pair of 9.95-worthy routines from Adrienne Randall and Abby Paulson solidified the Ute win. The event score of 49.625 was just .025 shy of matching Utah’s all-time beam record of 49.650 recorded in the 1995 season. UNDERCLASSMEN STEPPING UP Of Utah’s 120 routines this season, Ute underclassmen have made up 52.5 percent of the routines. Utah’s beam lineup has had 20-of-30 routines (66.7 percent) belong to underclassmen, while floor has seen 18-of-30 routines (60 percent) performed by sophomores and freshmen. On bars, the 30 routines have been split 50-50. Freshman Abby Paulson has claimed four event victories through five meets, while sophomore Cristal Isa and freshman Maile O’Keefe have each earned three titles to add to the impactful sophomore and freshman classes. SHARING THE SPOTLIGHT Through five meets this season, Utah has seen nine different gymnasts earn an event victory. The Red Rocks have competed 12 gymnasts this year and the nine Utes stepping up to earn event victories exhibits the depth on the team. The nine Utes have accumulated 25 total event titles, led by Kim Tessen, who has six on the season, and Abby Paulson, who has claimed four. Against Arizona State, six different Red Rocks claimed event victories. This past week at Cal, Utah also had six different event winners, which included three Utes tying for the beam title with phenomenal 9.95 routines. UP NEXT Utah gymnastics will begin its next road stretch of the season with a top-five matchup against Pac-12 rival UCLA. The No. 3 Utes and No. 4 Bruins will meet on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. MT in Pauley Pavilion. The highly anticipated meet will be televised on ESPN2.

T
he most famous college gymnastics facility in the country, Utah’s Jon M. Huntsman Center has showcased more major collegiate gymnastics meets than any other venue. This year, the iconic venue is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The Huntsman Center has hosted a record nine national championships—one AIAW and eight NCAA Championships: 1981 (AIAW), 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1994, 1999 and 2007.Other gymnastics events making Huntsman Center appearances include the 1979 USGF World Championships Trials, the 1980 and ‘82 Championships of the USA, the 1993 World University Games Trials, 14 NCAA regional championships and two Pac-12 Championships. The Utes have averaged nearly 12,000 fans a meet since 1990 and over 14,590 a meet since 2010. Opened in 1969 on the southeast side of campus (elevation 4,657 feet), the 15,000-seat Huntsman Center is still in pristine condition. The facility underwent a $6 million renovation in the summer of 2014. The project included the installation of a super-grid ceiling structure, a state-of-the-art sound system, brighter and energyefficient LED lighting in the arena and concourse, a maple wood floor, and updated graphics wrapping the walls of the lower bowl and mid-level concourse. New videoboards were installed in the fall of 2017 at a cost of $4.1 million. Also calling the Huntsman Center home are
the Ute men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball teams. The Huntsman Center ranks third among the nation’s arenas for most NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games held (81), including the 1979 Final Four starring Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.
