F ROM T H E A RT I S T IC DI R E CTOR
Welcome to our Annual Family Series program designed to give you and your entire family the experience of this glorious and athletic art form of ballet. We created this program as a way for you to introduce young ones to live theater and dance but in an environment that makes it accessible to everyone. In just over one hour and with a narrator to tell a beloved and well-known story it is our hope that we excite and inspire you with this unique performing art. For this year’s program I have chosen a revival of our hugely popular 2013 - Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp from the ancient stories of “The Tales of 1001 Arabian Nights.” These tales also included Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and The Seven Voyages of Sinbad. They were all part of the stories of Scheherazade, a story about a woman who had to tell tales to entertain a sultan in order not to be executed. As a child I loved these dramatic stories with their exotic locations and magic, so to bring Aladdin to life on stage I assembled a fantastic team. The choreography has been co-created by Ballet West Principal Ballet Mistress Pamela Robinson-Harris and former Ballet West Soloist Peggy Dolkas. The sets have been designed by Ballet West’s Vice President of Production and Artistic Operations, Michael Andrew Currey. And the costumes have been designed by Ballet West’s Director of Costume Production, David Heuvel. These people are all marvelously creative. They took my original concepts and moved them forward beyond my wildest dreams. The music is a compilation of different classical composers. The dancing is performed by Ballet West II, Ballet West Professional Training Division, and all levels of Ballet West Academy. And the narration also has been done “In the family” by our Ballet Mistress Jane Wood-Smith and our Executive Director, Scott Altman. The Aladdin they have created is magical, dramatic, beautiful and very funny. It is a perfect ballet for everyone and this program is a perfect opportunity for you and your family to take time, slow down (not for too long) and experience theater, art, music, and togetherness. I hope you and your family enjoy, because I couldn’t have wished for more if I had rubbed a lamp and asked a genie myself.

LEADERSHIP Adam Sklute BALLET WEST ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Since 2007 Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s repertoire and visibility with exciting company premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. Under Sklute’s leadership BW has toured extensively to leading American venues including three engagements at Washington DC’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; Chicago’s famed Auditorium Theater; and twice at New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival, to name a few. In 2009, BW graced the cover of Dance Magazine for the first time in 25 years and again was on the cover in 2013. The company has garnered numerous reviews and articles in such publications as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Dance Magazine, Ballet Review, and Pointe. Ballet West was the subject of the BBC Worldwide Production’s docu-drama television series Breaking Pointe that aired on The CW channel for two seasons. Sklute has introduced BW to renowned, contemporary choreographers such as Nicolo Fonte, Jiri Kylián, Mark Morris, and Twyla Tharp, while expanding the company’s Balanchine repertoire and adding early 20th century Diaghilev-era masterpieces. In addition, Sklute conceived and produced new versions of Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and Giselle. He developed BW’s wildly successful annual Family Series and Innovations programs. Sklute began his training with the Oakland Ballet and San Francisco Ballet schools and was with The Joffrey Ballet for twenty-three years rising from dancer to Associate Director. He was one of the last two artists personally chosen by Robert Joffrey for his company. Sklute has extensive television and film credits and is an Adjunct Professor at The University of Utah and a teacher, lecturer, coach, and judge for ballet worldwide.
