F ROM T H E A RT I S T IC DI R E CTOR Welcome to Ballet West’s 54th Season and my 10th anniversary! I am so pleased you are joining us for this spectacular season. My past 10 years with Ballet West have seen phenomenal growth and expansion of our organization on every level and I couldn’t be more excited by how far we have come. We are proud to represent Utah to the nation and the world as an arts ambassador to our great state. This entire season is comprised of some of my favorite classic and non-traditional works and this program is a perfect example of the type of elegance, versatility, and athletic daring that Ballet West is known for. We just finished a spectacular run of cutting edge works at New York’s Joyce Theater, and closed our charming Family Series ballet, Aladdin as danced by Ballet West II and students from the Ballet West Academy. Now it is on to our main Company for our season opener. We open with George Balanchine’s stunning, sparkling, and heart-warming masterpiece, Serenade, set to Tchaikovsky’s glorious Serenade for Strings. This work was Mr. Balanchine’s first creation in America in 1934. It is reported that during the creation process he never had the same number of dancers to work with so he choreographed on whoever was in the studio each day. As you watch it take note of some of the details. He only had 17 dancers— an odd number for ballet – but he brilliantly arranged them in perfect symmetry. In one rehearsal a woman entered late. In another a dancer fell down. In yet another someone’s hair came undone. Balanchine ingeniously incorporated all these “mishaps” into his final work. But one doesn’t need to know any of this to enjoy this spellbinding, abstract ballet. Its relationship to the music is so pure and elegant, the patterns so fascinating, and the underlying theme of love and loss so moving that Serenade never ceases to transport us with its ethereal beauty. I chose it to open the program as its heavenly beauty is the perfect foil for the earthly and dramatic world of Carmina Burana. In 1974, our Founder Willam Christensen, took an enormous risk when he presented our Salt Lake City community with John Butler’s production of Carmina Burana, a work that deals overtly with the battle between the sacred and the profane. The music, Carl Orff’s now iconic score, is an oratorio for chorus, solo singers, and dancers about 11th century monks who leave their monastery to experience the outside world around them. What they discover is a world of sensual pleasure, a world of great danger and hatred, but ultimately a world of great piety and soul. From these experiences, they return to their monastery with a greater understanding of humanity and the Lord. Carmina Burana initially shocked audiences, but it quickly grew to be the most requested non-full length ballet in Ballet West’s repertoire. For my 10th anniversary, I have asked our resident choreographer, Nicolo Fonte to create a brand new version of this powerful piece. Nicolo has great success with well known music and themes, he gets to the heart of what makes these works so iconic and illuminates them in new and unexpected ways.
14
Nicolo’s Carmina Burana takes place in a timeless realm. With 75 choristers on a scaffolding above the dancers singing directly out at the audience, and the soloists incorporated into the action alongside the dancers, he creates a world of movement and music that celebrates the darkness and the celestial light that are all part of this intense dance theater experience. With moments of intense passion and power, joyous levity and glorious spirituality, Nicolo, the singers, the orchestra, and the dancers take us on an unforgettable journey. It is indeed a remarkable season. Along with this new Carmina Burana we will also be presenting all new sets and costumes for Mr. C’s incomparable production of The Nutcracker; the revival of Sir Frederick Ashton’s glorious and hilarious classic Cinderella; a trip to St. George, Utah with our Works from Within; a spring program filled with fascinating and dynamic creations, including the rarely seen modern dance masterpiece Summerspace by Merce Cunningham with sets and costumes by the 20th Century Artist Robert Rauschenberg, Jiří Kylián’s heartbreaking Return to a Strange Land, and British choreographer David Bintley’s brilliant , funny, and sleek Shakespeare Suite – a series of vignette’s based on Shakespeare’s plays set in pop and contemporary dress to the jazz strains of Duke Ellington. The season finishes in May with our 2nd annual National Choreographic Festival, featuring guest companies from around the country – this year we celebrate women choreographers and companies run by women. I am excited to welcome our new Executive Director Michael Scolamiero who will be joining me as my business partner and oversee all the administrative aspects of Ballet West. I have been honored to act as CEO over the past year but I am excited to return my focus exclusively to the artistic product – the position Salt Lake City and Utah hired me for ten years ago. Thank you for your ongoing patronage. I hope you enjoy this program and the entire season. As always I am grateful for each and every one of you.
Adam Sklute Artistic Director
Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards including, Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and most recently Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives.

BALLET WEST NEWS
Michael Scolamiero Joins Ballet West company’s size, start an endowment, and fund new ballets. He also oversaw the planning and kickoff of a $25 million campaign to fund a new building for the Company. Under his leadership, the budget rose from $6.5 million to $11.3 million. Most recently, Scolamiero served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet, one of the nation’s largest ballet companies. During his tenure, the Company set records for contributed revenue, recorded operating surpluses of $2.6 million in two years, and reduced debt by more than $2 million. Ballet West is excited to announce Michael Scolamiero as the new Executive Director of the Company. The selection comes after an extensive six-month international search, led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. Scolamiero will collaborate with Artistic Director Adam Sklute who recently renewed his contract with Ballet West. “There was broad interest in the Ballet West position from admired industry professionals,” said Kaiser. “My goal was to find an administrator who is uniquely attuned to the specific long term artistic goals Adam and his team have set for themselves. Michael Scolamiero, with his successful tenure at some of the nation’s most beloved arts organizations, is just the person to help Adam fulfill his goals, and continue the sustainable growth of the Company.” Scolamiero was the Executive Director of Pennsylvania Ballet for 17 years where he led a successful $12 million campaign to boost the
16
“Michael’s skill set is exactly what Ballet West was seeking—a stellar record of donor relations, nonprofit governance, board development, and sustainability,” said Artistic Director Adam Sklute. “Michael is deeply respected in the dance industry and I am delighted to welcome him to Salt Lake City. I look forward to developing a strong business partnership so that together we can build Ballet West into the future.” In September 2016, Sklute took on the dual role of interim CEO and Artistic Director while he and the Board assessed the needs of the Company. “My time in this dual role allowed us as a team to analyze our phenomenal growth, and our future. It was this methodical look at strategies for advancing all aspects of the organization that led us to Michael.” Added Sklute, “I am grateful to relinquish the CEO position and return to the work I was hired by Ballet West to do ten years ago.” Scolamiero started last week, before the annual Ballet West Gala. “I am excited to move west and make Salt Lake City home,” said Scolamiero. “Utah is a place of exquisite natural beauty
with a deep cultural love of fine arts. For more than a decade, I’ve watched from afar as Ballet West exploded under Adam’s leadership. It is especially exciting to become part of an organization in the midst of a renaissance and on strong financial ground. The energy at Ballet West is exhilarating and I am energized and quite optimistic about the possibilities.” John Miller, Ballet West Board President said, “The search committee was dazzled by the
overall quality and quantity of candidates for this important role. In the end, I am thrilled to have Michael joining our team. He proved to be the apogee of temperament and talent we toiled to find. I look forward to introducing him to the community. Finally, I would like to thank Michael Kaiser for his guidance and all those who helped make this selection. It was an exhaustive search and I believe we found an ideal and impeccable Executive Director in Michael.”

Larsen Set to Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, this sweeping ballet was the first work created by Balanchine in America. It was originally created in 1934 as an exercise for the newly formed School of American Ballet. Serenade has since gone into the repertoire of companies around the world. Attendance was sporadic at those first rehearsals, so Balanchine, undaunted, made due with whomever he has in the moment and he incorporated random accidents such as a ballerina falling, a dancer arriving late and someone’s hair coming undone in to the final product, creating a ballet of exhilarating movement, lush musicality, and moving drama without telling an actual story. –Adam Sklute

IN FOCUS: CA R M INA BU R A NA
Lost and Found By Joshua Jones
The Carmina Burana’s journey from obscurity to Ballet West’s stage is as interesting as an Indiana Jones movie, filled with mystery and scandal. In 1803, in a dusty monastery in Bavaria, a librarian re-discovered a manuscript not seen since the 13th century. Later named the Carmina Burana, the manuscript contained 254 poems and dramatic texts. Believed to be the works of student and clergy, researchers date some of the texts back to the 11th century. Curators who started to transcribe the Latin, German, and French works were surprised to find irreverent, satirical, and sometimes risqué themes, abounding throughout the Carmina Burana.
28
In 1936, Carl Orff set 24 of the poems to music, quickly turning it into a popular piece of classical repertoire. Just over an hour long, the composition, has been featured in film, television, video games, and covered or sampled by Michael Jackson, and even Ozzy Osbourne. During World War II, Orff remained in Germany and continued writing music until his death in 1982, but he never found success again as he had with Carmina Burana. When John Butler first set Carmina Burana on dancers at the New York City Opera in 1959, it became an instant success, although it was sometimes controversial. Ballet West Founder Willam Christensen, first staged Butler’s Carmina Burana in 1974. Some audience members walked out, but those who stayed gave the piece a prolonged standing ovation. “When we went for the bow, the audience was going wild. It was intense, emotion and very powerful,” said Caldwell, Ballet Master and Archivist. Now, 43 years later, Bruce says Carmina Burana has been performed by Ballet West more than 100 times, making it one of the most popular pieces in the Company’s repertoire.

PROF ILE S George Balanchine CHOREOGRAPHER, SERENADE
George Balanchine is regarded as one of the foremost contemporary choreographers in the world of ballet. He came to America in 1933 and established the School of American Ballet in 1934. In 1948, Balanchine established the New York City ballet and presented its first program consisting of Concerto Barocco, Orpheus and Symphony in C. Balanchine served as ballet master for the New York City Ballet from 1948 until his death in 1983, choreographing the majority of the productions the company has introduced since its inception. An authoritative catalog of his works lists 425 works created by Balanchine in his lifetime. Balanchine’s style has been described as neoclassic. A gifted musician himself, his response to the Romantic Classicism was to de-emphasize the plot in his ballets, preferring to let “dance and music be the star of the show”. Nevertheless, tantalizing hints of a story color his works in such ballets as Apollo, Harlequinade, Liebesliede Waltzer and La Sonnambula. The New York City Ballet and School of American Ballet remain dedicated to the preservation of Balanchine’s ideals.
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky COMPOSER, SERENADE
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) studied at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg, where George Balanchine later studied piano in addition to his studies in dance. Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular and influential of all romantic composers. His work is expressive, melodic and grand in scale, with rich orchestrations. His output was prodigious and included chamber works, symphonies, and concerti for various instruments, operas and works for the piano. His creations for the ballet, composed in close partnership with Marius Petipa, include Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and The Sleeping Beauty.

She worked extensively with both George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins from 1974-1994, performing and creating over 40 soloist roles in their extensive repertory. Her principal roles covered a wide range of styles including ballets like Agon, Apollo, Swan Lake, Serenade, Dances at a Gathering, Afternoon of a Faun, Glass Pieces, Jewels, Chaconne, and Mozartiana. She has appeared numerous times on public television in Live from Lincoln Center as Titania in Balanchine’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Great Performances, and more recently in 2010 on PBS in American Masters- Jerome Robbins. PROF ILE S Nicolo Fonte CHOREOGRAPHER, CARMINA BURANA
Choreographer Nicolo Fonte is known for his daring and original approach to dance. His work has been noted by critics for a unique movement language as well as a highly developed fusion of ideas, dance, and design. Born in Brooklyn New York, Fonte started dancing at the age of 14. He studied at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York as well as at the San Francisco Ballet and New York City Ballet Schools while completing a Bachelor Degree of Fine Arts at SUNY Purchase. Upon graduation, he danced with Peridance in NYC and later joined Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Montreal, dancing in the works of Balanchine, Tudor, Kudelka and Spaniard Nacho Duato. Fonte subsequently joined Duato’s Compañia Nacional de Danza in Madrid and forged a strong identity in the Spanish company for seven years - for both his dancing and his choreography. En los Segundos Ocultos, (In Hidden Seconds), one of three ballets Fonte made for the Spanish company, was hailed as a breakthrough work of great impact with the poetic vision of a mature artist and indeed this ballet established his presence on the European dance scene. In 2000 Fonte retired from performing to devote himself full-time to his choreographic career. Since that time he has created or staged his ballets for The Dutch National Ballet, Houston Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Ballet West, Royal Ballet of Flanders, Stuttgart Ballet, The Australian Ballet, The Göteborg Ballet, The Finnish National Ballet, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theatre, The Perm Tchaikovsky Ballet, The Washington Ballet, Ballett Mainz, Ballett Nürnberg, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, TANZ Ensemble Cathy Sharp, North Carolina Dance Theatre, Tulsa Ballet, Ballet British Columbia, Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal and Queensland Ballet. Fonte received a Choo San Goh award for his 2002 collaboration with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Almost Tango, of which R.M. Campbell of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer wrote, “Fonte is a thinker, an architect who creates the new rather than reinvent the old. He is a master of manipulating space and creating relationships”. Almost Tango was also voted as one of Dance Europe’s “Best Premiere’s” when it was restaged for The Australian Ballet in 2004. From 2002 to 2006 Nicolo enjoyed an ongoing creative partnership with The Göteborg Ballet in Sweden, creating and staging numerous works that helped establish the company’s distinct profile. While in Göteborg he created his first full-length ballet, based on the life of Tchaikovsky. Widely acclaimed in the international press for Fonte’s marriage of narrative skill and a contemporary choreographic language, Re: Tchaikovsky appeared on the “Best of 2005” lists of both Ballett-Tanz and Dance Europe. Fonte has also played an important role in the ongoing development of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet as one of that company’s most popular guest choreographers. To date he has created eight highly successful works for ASFB that have toured throughout the US and overseas. Nicolo Fonte is currently the Resident Choreographer for Ballet West, in Salt Lake City, which began with the 2012-2013 season. He also became Resident Choreographer at Oregon Ballet Theatre beginning with the 2016 - 2017 season.

PROF ILE S Carl Orff COMPOSER, CARMINA BURANA
Orff studied at the Munich Academy of Music and with the German composer Heinrich Kaminski and later conducted in Munich, Mannheim, and Darmstadt. He edited some 17th-century operas and in 1937 produced his secular oratorio Carmina Burana. Intended to be staged with dance, it was based on a manuscript of medieval poems. This work led to others inspired by Greek theatre and by medieval mystery plays, notably Catulli carmina (1943; Songs of Catullus) and Trionfo di Afrodite (1953; The Triumph of Aphrodite), which form a trilogy with Carmina Burana. Orff’s Schulwerk, a manual describing his method of conducting, was first published in 1930. This system of music education for children, largely based on developing a sense of rhythm through group exercise and performance with percussion instruments, has been widely adopted. In 1924 in Munich he founded, with the German gymnast Dorothee Günther, the Günther School for gymnastics, dance, and music.

I N F O CUS: C A R M I NA BU R A NA W I T H S E R E NA DE
Speaking with Sklute By Joshua Jones
But, in the 70’s, this subject matter was a bit scandalous. Nevertheless, Mr. C, who was born and raised in Brigham City, Utah, understood the importance of this piece of art. He also understood the magnitude, excitement, and drama of the music and choreography of Carl Orff’s score. It is Ballet West’s most often-requested non full-length work. It is also the piece about which I receive the most complaints.
Artistic Director Adam Sklute sat down to answer a few questions about Carmina Burana, and what audiences can expect from Nicolo Fonte’s new creation. What is the Legacy of our current production of Carmina Burana? Of the many ballet versions of Carmina Burana, our most recent production, choreographed by John Butler, is probably the most-staged and well-known version. Mr. C brought it into the Ballet West repertoire in 1974. At that time, it was a very daring thing for him to do, because the subject matter is rather complicated. It is about monks slipping out of the monastery and leaving behind their sacred duties and reveling in a very human and profane way. During this production, the choir was placed throughout the box seats in the theater. They could then look down at the orchestra and the maestro conducting. It was quite a spectacle.
46
What makes Carmina Burana so beloved in Utah? Just listen to the music. It is so dynamic and exciting. Those first strains of Carl Orff’s O Fortuna with the chorus—they knock your socks off—you are ready to fall out of your chair within seconds of the first note. The score goes from extreme power and drama to extreme delicacy, purity, and simplicity. It takes many cues from early Stravinsky, while adding unique harmonies that are beautiful and bombastic. I think the drama of music, the drive of orchestral sound, and the excitement of dance are the reasons audiences are excited and inspired by it. Since you are staging Carmina Burana during your 10th Anniversary Season, what personal connection do you have to this piece? Mr. C received both incredible praise and backlash when he presented Carmina Burana. I thought, “What better way to begin my 10th Anniversary than with a piece that is so regularly requested?” I’m interested in inspiring audiences, giving them something they love, but also challenging them… I hope this production will do all three.
I also love and admire our Resident Choreographer Nicolo Fonte’s work. One of his great gifts, in my opinion, is his ability to reimagine the great classics. Few choreographers can re-envision the great dramatic works as Nicolo can. We’ve done many works with him now: his electrifying Rite of Spring, his fascinating Almost Tango, his brilliant Bolero. Each one shows his unique brand of musicality and movement. This will be very different, as Nicolo’s idea is to have a strong battle between the sacred and profane. It will not be obvious and nothing is
literal, but that is what I love about his work… it is both unexpected and inevitable. Why pair this with George Balanchine’s Serenade? The intensity, power, and profane--at times-subject matter needed to be paired with something that would both complement it, and be completely different. George Balanchine’s Serenade is one of the most serene, elegant, and classic works that we have in our repertoire, and I felt it was a perfect pairing.

BE PART OF THE LONGEST-RUNNING NUTCRACKER PRODUCTION IN AMERICA! Ballet West will premiere a brand new physical production of Willam Christensen’s beloved classic, The Nutcracker, during the winter of 2017. It will contain spectacular new sets, costumes, and special effects, while staying true to Mr. C’s delightful original choreography and Tchaikovsky’s world-renowned score. Donate as little as $25 and have your name (or the name of someone you love!) associated with this dazzling new production for the entirety of its projected 25+ year run. As a Nutcracker Campaign participant you will also have the opportunity to purchase a limited edition commemorative gift, hand crafted and designed by O.C. Tanner.
