About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, and Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. Ballet West has toured the world several times over, presenting the very best in American classical ballet.
willam christensen, founder of ballet west
Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City in 1963. Willam F. Christensen was the company’s first artistic director, co-founding the company together with Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen had established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah, and with the tireless assistance of Mrs. Enid Cosgriff, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. But this was not the first ballet company Willam Christensen founded. Along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. There, he went on to create the first full-length American productions of Coppélia, Swan Lake, and his evergreen production of The Nutcracker, which remains in Ballet West’s repertoire to this day. With 36 company members, 17 second company members, and a thriving academy that trains dancers of all ages, many of whom have gone on to professional careers with Ballet West and companies around the world, Ballet West ranks among the top professional ballet companies in America. Since its inception, the Company has had five artistic directors—its founder Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart, Jonas Kage, and currently Adam Sklute, each of whom has helped to build Ballet West’s unique and expansive profile. For more than 50 years, Willam Christensen and Ballet West have developed and influenced innumerable great artists in the ballet world. Some notable figures include Bart Cook, Finis Jhung, Jay Jolley, Victoria Morgan, Tomm Ruud, Michael Smuin, Richard Tanner, and Kent Stowell. With an eclectic and ever expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in the world of dance.

From the Artistic Director The past eighteen months have been so hard on all of us, but we at Ballet West were grateful to weather them, bringing you three live, carefully scaled-back performances during that time. Now with our “Back to Live” season, we are thrilled to offer the large scale grand productions for which Ballet West is known. In that spirit, we open the season with Ben Stevenson’s extravagant ballet production of Dracula, not seen here in Utah since 2011. It’s spooky and scary– slightly risqué, but safe for families, and filled with spectacular classical dance, music and theater. I look at it as perfect entertainment for America’s quickly emerging second-favorite holiday–Halloween. Ben Stevenson is arguably one of our greatest living story ballet choreographers and I like to describe his Dracula as a wild ride through the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. Ben has brilliantly adapted Bram Stoker’s dark tale to the ballet stage, modeling it after our beloved 19th century classics Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Giselle and using the music of Franz Liszt (a perfect choice) as arranged by John Lanchbery. We open with a classically based “White Act”–but instead of a corps of Swans, Willis or Shades, we have a corps de ballet of Dracula’s vampire wives reveling in their un-deadness as Dracula’s henchman, Renfield, ushers in his master’s next victim, Flora. In Act Two, we are introduced to the village below Dracula’s castle. The act is replete with happy peasant character dances, a beautiful grand pas de deux performed by our young lovers Fredrick and Svetlana, and finally a mad scene by poor, bitten Flora, culminating in the abduction of Svetlana by the fiendish Dracula. In Act Three, Dracula is vanquished in a sensational ending when Fredrick and the villagers storm the castle and expose the vampire to the sun. We have had a wonderful time sinking our teeth into this meaty choreography! My dancers have devoured their assignments with a ghoulish relish and are proud to join the glamorous vampire ranks of “Twilight” and “True Blood.” But Ben Stevenson’s Dracula is more than just theatrical entertainment and fun high jinks, it truly is a classical work that has challenged them physically and artistically, and as always, you can depend on Ballet West to bring you great theater and great art. If you enjoy the spectacle of this production, we hope you will join us for this entire season of blockbusters: the return of Mr. C’s beloved The Nutcracker, Michael Smuin’s rarely seen Romeo & Juliet, Nicolo Fonte’s 14
From the Artistic Director monumental Carmina Burana with the Ballet West premiere of Jerome Robbins massive, pulsating Glass Pieces, and finally, our Choreographic Festival, a celebration of world premieres. Thank you for joining us and welcome back to live! We’ve missed you! We will continue to take care of your health and safety as we bring you the joys of live theater.
Adam Sklute Artistic Director Ballet West Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and most recently Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives.

From the Executive Director How wonderful it feels to be back live in the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre! Though Ballet West has continuously performed and educated using every digital avenue during this pandemic, never have we felt more appreciative of the visceral, renewing experience that only live performances offer. I’m proud to be part of the Ballet West family, which has a deeply rooted commitment to this community through good times and difficult ones. Guided by the legacy of our founder, Willam Christensen, the Company has worked tirelessly to grow this art form by capturing new audiences but also by nurturing new talent and a lifelong appreciation for ballet. Our thriving Frederick Quinney Lawson Academy has expanded and grown exponentially over the years, attracting students from nearly every state in the country and many international students. Trainees are attracted to our highly reputable summer intensive programs and our year-round training in Salt Lake, Lehi, and Park City. We are thrilled to announce a new and improved location for our Summit County campus, just two miles north from the former Park City facility in a serene mountain environment that draws from its inspiring surroundings. Along with a new location, new leadership at the Peggy Bergmann Park City Campus has recently been announced with the appointment of Ballet West First Soloist Allison DeBona as Principal– continuing the highest level of comprehensive dance training in the region. Summit County is a hub for the arts, and we’re honored to help it grow by bringing Ballet West training to children and adults alike. Students of the Academy have access to unparalleled instruction from in-house and guest teachers, the opportunity to train alongside professional dancers from the main Company while also having the unique opportunity to perform with a dance organization that is recognized around the globe. Throughout these difficult months spurred by the pandemic Ballet West’s family of donors, volunteers, board, staff, Academy families and patrons have remained steadfast in their commitment to our remarkable Company. Their outpouring of support reinforces Ballet West’s integral role into Utah’s quality of life, into its fabric and in to its future. To that

From the Executive Director end, we roll out this exciting ballet filled with gorgeous dance, brilliant music and dazzling sets, costumes and stage effects. Welcome back to another exciting season with Ballet West!! Sincerely,
Michael Scolamiero Executive Director Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

Profiles BEN STEVENSON, O.B.E.
Choreographer and Artistic Director, Texas Ballet Theater A native of Portsmouth, England, Ben Stevenson, O.B.E. began his training at the Arts Education School in London. He appeared with the Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet and English National Ballet where, as a principal dancer, he performed leading roles in all the classics. During his professional career, Stevenson received numerous awards, including 3 gold medals at the International Ballet Competitions of 1972, 1982, and 1986. His contribution to ballet, as a dancer and choreographer, influences the art of ballet at an international level. In December of 1999, Queen Elizabeth II named Stevenson an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Ben is a recipient of the 2000 Dance Magazine Award and was recognized in 2018 by the Chinese government as an influential foreign expert across four decades during China’s Reform and Opening Up policy. He is celebrated as a Texas legend, winning the Texas Medal of Arts in 2005 for achieving greatness through his creative talents. Mr. Stevenson is one of the great storytellers of ballet. Known for creating splendor on stage, his choreography is both world-renowned and in high-demand across ballet companies world-wide. His full length works include: The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, The Nutcracker, Coppelia, Don Quixote, Peer Gynt, Dracula, The Snow Maiden, and Cleopatra.
FRANZ LISZT
Composer
Franz Liszt was a Hungarian virtuoso pianist and composer. He studied and played at Vienna and Paris, and for most of his early adulthood toured throughout Europe giving concerts. His virtuosity earned him approbations by composers and performers alike throughout Europe. His great generosity with both time and money benefited the lives of many people: victims of disasters, orphans and the many students he taught for free. He also contributed to the L.v. Beethoven memorial fund. His piano compositions include works such as his Piano Sonata in B minor, and two piano concertos, which have entered the standard repertoire. He also made many exuberant piano transcriptions of operas, famous symphonies, Paganini Caprices, and Schubert Lieder. As would be expected from a pianist-composer of Liszt’s virtuosity, many of his piano compositions are amongst the most technically challenging in the repertoire.
