F ROM T H E A RT I S T IC DI R E CTOR Dear Patrons, Welcome to the exciting and diverse opening program of our 2015/2016 Season – a program of some of my favorite things, which we’ve entitled Iconic Classics. Icon: a person or thing that is idolized. Classic: of enduring interest, quality, or style/ serving as a standard, model, or guide. Each of the ballets on this program is a work of classic choreography by some of the world’s most iconic choreographers. They epitomize the style of each of these revered creators and their unique approaches to dance, subject matter, and music. These works also hold great personal meaning for me. As a teenage ballet student they opened my eyes to the world of ballet, its power as theater, its athleticism mixed with grace, and its ability to make music visible. These ballets shaped my outlook and aesthetic in so many ways, so putting them together on one program feels like presenting you with a perfect three-course meal. Lets start with a delightful appetizer – Jerome Robbins’ and Leonard Bernstein’s charming 1944 Fancy Free. This was the first collaboration between these two American greats and the ballet became the inspiration for the Broadway Musical On The Town. It was created during World War II and tells the story of three sailors looking for fun in the big city on their one night off before returning to their ship. For me it was Bernstein’s score - so alive and full of charm, melding popular music idioms of the day with classic orchestrations, and Robbins’ amazing ability to make the most subtle details of theatricality and humor come to life in seemingly spontaneous ways that drew me in. It is full of joy, full of humor but there is an almost imperceptible feeling of ennui that fascinates me to this day. Almost as if we don’t know for sure what the fate of these young men is to be once they go off to war. The “main course” of this program, in my opinion, is Jiri Kylian’s 1980 masterpiece Overgrown Path to the haunting piano cycle On an Overgrown Path by composer Leos Janacek. The ballet is rich, complex and yet perfectly balanced. It is a poem on love and loss reflecting Janacek’s score which was written after the death of his daughter. I was in the audience for the American premiere of this spellbinding work when Kylian brought his company, the Netherlands Dance Theater, to the Met in New York in 1981 and I literally could not get out of my seat when it was over. The

14

F ROM T H E A RT I S T IC DI R E CTOR emotional intimacy, the sense of yearning and the depth of feeling that Kylian mines out of the simplest of gestures and his unique approach to dance – grounded in classical ballet but with earthy, organic, and an almost seamless flow, quickly made him one of my all-time favorite choreographers and now, nearly 35 years after seeing this work for the first time, its like a dream to be able to share it with my dancers and with you. No great meal would be complete without a great dessert. Something that compliments the other courses but leaves one feeling energized and fulfilled. This is George Balanchine’s Symphony in C. The score is the now famous symphony by George Bizet, which the composer wrote in 1855 at the age of 17. It was lost for many years and was not really rediscovered until Balanchine’s friend Igor Stravinsky brought it to his attention. Balanchine created this spectacular and demanding showstopper in 1947 for the Paris Opera Ballet under the title Le Palais de Cristal and in 1948 he reproduced it for his own New York City Ballet. Both premieres met with instant acclaim. The music is now classic and the ballet – legendary. The breathtaking speed and clarity it requires and the incredible technical demands it presents of all the dancers makes it a benchmark for some of the greatest companies in the world. Ballet West first presented this wonderful work in 1969 but this is the first time we will do it with its original cast of 50. After I first saw this ballet in my late teens, I ran and danced down the street all the way home. I don’t ask you to do the same but I hope it will invoke the same feelings. The one thing all three of these choreographers share is an innate sense of musicality. When I experience these works, the steps and situations seem inevitable, as if there was no other possible response to the music. Between the music, athleticism, dance, and storytelling of these works they are each in their own way complete pieces of theater. This is what makes these ballets classics. This is what makes these choreographers iconic. I hope you enjoy the program. I remain grateful to each and every one of you for your patronage. Thank You,

Adam Sklute Artistic Director Ballet West

F ROM TH E E X ECU TI V E DIR ECTOR I am very excited to welcome you to the opening production of Ballet West’s 52nd Season. This year, our repertoire continues to reflect the uniqueness of our Company, it is diverse, dazzling, and dramatic! As our prestige continues to grow at home and around the world, patrons have come to expect this pinnacle of talent from Ballet West, but this year, I’m certain that our productions will bring even higher acclaim. From Balanchine to Nijinsky, and the 60th Anniversary of The Nutcracker, the artistic staff and our dancers are taking intrepid steps to produce the most cutting-edge and exciting ballet in Utah, and beyond. From the administration staff, we’re also breaking new ground to introduce exciting initiatives that will ensure our art form is enjoyed by every age, throughout the state. We believe that ballet should be enjoyed by everyone, that the beauty and joy of this medium must be available to all who seek it, and it should be introduced to those who have no access to it. To this end, we’ve invested considerable resources in our Education and Community Outreach initiative, which will reach 110,000 students this year, in every part of Utah. We’re proud to say this is one of the largest ballet Outreach initiatives in the nation. For those closer to home, we’re introducing a new $20 performance ticket, available to all, as well as a deep military and student discount. To those who come and enjoy the experience, we’re inviting you to join our new Membership Program, which starts at $25 and allows anyone to be an insider at Ballet West. Membership comes with exclusives such a subscription to our quarterly magazine, a Membership card with offers from community partners, invitations to sneak peek events, and much more. Additionally, it allows patrons to be on the forefront of arts and culture, and to play a leading role at Ballet West. Another area in which I’m very excited to see expansion is the Ballet West Academy, one of the finest ballet schools in the country. Our recent foray to Thanksgiving Point and downtown Salt Lake City has opened hundreds of spaces for eager dancers to explore and embody this art form. As I’ve witnessed first-hand, ballet training improves the mind, body, and soul. And, because bettering these areas is good for everyone, we offer these classes to adults at three locations, where our community can drop-in and learn to breath, stretch, and work the barre. Again, our goal is to provide access to the art form for one and all, novice and aficionado alike. As we enter our fourth year of robust growth, I’d like to invite you to actively participate in your ballet Company, Ballet West. We truly have something for everyone. We hope you’ll join us. And don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to witness what is sure to be an exciting and magical year! Many Thanks,

Scott Altman Executive Director

LEADERSHIP

Adam Sklute ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, BALLET WEST & BALLET WEST ACADEMY

Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s repertoire, visibility, and overall outlook with exciting Company premieres, increased touring and public exposure, and greater focus on Ballet West Academy and Ballet West II. Under Sklute’s leadership Ballet West has toured extensively, appearing three times at Washington DC’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to sold out audiences; a weeklong engagement at New York City’s Joyce Theater; Chicago’s Auditorium Theater with two separate programs; twice at New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival; and twice at the Chicago Dancing Festival. The Company has also appeared at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, The Laguna Dance Festival, Aspen, CO, Dallas, TX, twice in Las Vegas, NV, Minneapolis, MN, and Victoria, BC. In 2009, Ballet West graced the cover of Dance Magazine for the first time in 25 years and again was on the cover in 2013. Under Sklute, the Company has garnered numerous reviews and articles in such publications as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Dance Magazine, Ballet Review, and Pointe to name a few. Ballet West was the subject of the BBC Worldwide Production’s docu-drama television series Breaking Pointe which aired for two seasons on The CW channel. Sklute has introduced Ballet West audiences to such renowned contemporary choreographers as Nicolo Fonte, Jiri Kylián, Mark Morris, and Twyla Tharp, among others, all while expanding the company’s Balanchine repertoire and adding early 20th century Diaghilev-era masterpieces. In addition to reintroducing lost elements of Christensen’s production of The Nutcracker and reconstructing his The Firebird, Sklute conceived and produced his own new versions of Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Giselle. Sklute has created wildly successful annual programmatic additions to the Season, including a Family Series and Innovations programs. All in all, in his eight years as Artistic Director, Sklute has introduced over thirty new works and nearly forty world premieres to Ballet West. A native of Berkeley, California, Sklute began dancing at the age of 16. His early training was at the Oakland Ballet and San Francisco Ballet schools. After only two years of formal study Sklute became one of the last two artists personally chosen by Robert Joffrey for The Joffrey Ballet. He danced with The Joffrey from 1985 to 2000 and then rose through the ranks to Associate Director in 2005. He became Artistic Director for Ballet West in 2007. Sklute has served on the boards of Chicago’s Dance for Life, Salt Lake Community College, School of the Arts Advisory Board; and the Salt Lake County Cultural Facilities Master Plan Advisory Board. He currently serves on the Board of the Gerald Arpino/Robert Joffrey Foundation. A finalist judge and international representative for numerous ballet competitions including the Youth America Grand Prix, Los Angeles’ Spotlight Awards, The International Ballet Competition, The Japan Grand Prix, and an adjudicator for the American College Dance Festival Association, Sklute was listed as one of the 25 Movers and Shakers of the Utah Arts Scene in 2007. In 2014 he was named one of Utah’s Enlightened 50 and he received the Utah National Guard’s Bronze Minuteman Award for outstanding service to Utah and the nation.

LEADERSHIP

Scott Altman BALLET WEST EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR THE ELIZABETH SOLOMON EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CHAIR

Scott Altman joined Ballet West as Executive Director in 2013, bringing with him nearly three decades of experience in nonprofit administration and performing arts. A respected industry leader, Altman has worked most of his career to advance the arts through entrepreneurial growth, fiscal sustainability, and by maximizing organizational achievements. Under Altman’s skilled leadership, Ballet West has experienced phenomenal expansion. With a concentrated focus on Ballet West Academy, the attendance of the school has grown 75 percent. The physical footprint has also increased significantly, with a new satellite location in Lehi, Utah at Thanksgiving Point, which opened in August, 2014. The Company is witnessing a true renaissance, unique for an organization in its 52nd year. In the last two years, under Altman, Ballet West has witnessed a 21 percent growth in ticket sales, vastly expanded touring schedule, robust growth in donor development, and a renewed and energized Board of Directors. In that time, Altman has been a guardian of the fiscal health of the organization, balancing the operational budget while establishing a robust cash reserve. Most recently, he facilitated a watershed campaign, the 12-month long “Million Dollar Challenge,” which completely eliminated $2.2 million in operational debt; the first time the Company had achieved the eradication of operational debt in 33 years. Upon his arrival at Ballet West, Altman helped negotiate financing and oversaw the construction of the Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre, which was completed in December of 2014. This beautiful new 55,000 square foot home for Ballet West, which is LEED-certified, provides space for studios, costume and administrative space, and is a beacon to the arts community in Utah, and beyond. Previous to Ballet West, Altman was the General Director of Phoenix-based Arizona Opera where, under his leadership, the company experienced unprecedented patron and audience development, and achieved financial stability by launching – and completing – an $8.5 million capital campaign. Altman also oversaw the design and construction of a spectacular new Opera Center in central Phoenix, which incorporated administrative, performance, production, education, and community space. Recently, Altman attended Stanford University’s Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders, an elite certificate program for nonprofit administrators. Altman is also the recipient of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Citation of Excellence Awards for 2007, 2008, and 2009. Professional activities include, among many others, serving as Regional and District Adjudicator for the Metropolitan Opera National Council, Altman has embedded himself in the community, and is a member of the Salt Lake Rotary, Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, Utah Nonprofits Association, and is a founder of the Ballet West Ballers, the official softball team of the Company. Prior to his roles in administration, Altman had a successful 20-year career as a professional singer and performed 37 opera roles internationally. Along his path to administration, he was also an adjunct professor of opera at Princeton University. Altman completed his Masters of Music degree at Manhattan School of Music in New York after receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the State University College at Purchase in Purchase, New York. He lives in Salt Lake with his wife and two sons.

CHOREOGRAPHERS Jerome Robbins CHOREOGRAPHER

Jerome Robbins is world renowned for his work as a choreographer of ballets as well as his work as a director and choreographer in theater, movies and television. His Broadway shows include On the Town, Billion Dollar Baby,High Button Shoes, West Side Story, The King and I, Gypsy, Peter Pan, Miss Liberty, Call Me Madam, and Fiddler on the Roof. His last Broadway production in 1989, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, won six Tony Awards including best musical and best director. Among the more than 60 ballets he created are Fancy Free, Afternoon of a Faun, The Concert, Dances At a Gathering, In the Night, In G Major, Other Dances, Glass Pieces and Ives, Songs, which are in the repertories of New York City Ballet and other major dance companies throughout the world. His last ballets include A Suite of Dances created for Mikhail Baryshnikov (1994), 2 & 3 Part Inventions (1994), West Side Story Suite (1995) and Brandenburg(1996). In addition to two Academy Awards for the film West Side Story, Mr. Robbins has received four Tony Awards, five Donaldson Awards, two Emmy Awards, the Screen Directors’ Guild Award, and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. Mr. Robbins was a 1981 Kennedy Center Honors Recipient and was awarded the French Chevalier dans l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur. Mr. Robbins died in 1998.

George Balanchine CHOREOGRAPHER

George Balanchine is regarded as one of the foremost contemporary choreographers in the world of ballet. He came to America in 1933 and established the School of American Ballet in 1934. In 1948, Balanchine established the New York City ballet and presented its first program consisting of Concerto Barocco, Orpheus and Symphony in C. Balanchine served as ballet master for the New York City Ballet from 1948 until his death in 1983, choreographing the majority of the productions the company has introduced since its inception. An authoritative catalog of his works lists 425 works created by Balanchine in his lifetime. Balanchine’s style has been described as neoclassic. A gifted musician himself, his response to the Romantic Classicism was to de-emphasize the plot in his ballets, preferring to let “dance and music be the star of the show”. Nevertheless, tantalizing hints of a story color his works in such ballets as Apollo, Harlequinade, Liebesliede Waltzer and La Sonnambula. The New York City Ballet and School of American Ballet remain dedicated to the preservation of Balanchine’s ideals.

CHOREOGRAPHERS Jiří Kylián, CHOREOGRAPHER

“I think that our task as choreographers is to search the extremities of our souls,” says Jiří Kylián. Since the early 1970s, the celebrated Czech choreographer, 63, has created 100 works – three-quarters for the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT). His creations draw inspiration from many different sources, combine elements from diverse art forms and defy categorisation. First smitten with the magic of circus, young Kylián started his studies as an acrobat. But, at the age of nine, he began training as a dancer at the Prague National Theatre ballet school. Six years later, in 1962, he was accepted at the Prague Conservatory and, in 1967-68, won a scholarship to London’s Royal Ballet School. There he met the influential choreographer John Cranko, who offered him a contract with the Stuttgart Ballet, and encouraged him to pursue his choreographic career. Kylián left Germany in 1975 to become the Artistic Co-Director of the Nederlands Dans Theater, for which he earlier created several pieces as guest choreographer. In 1978, following the success of his choreography Sinfonietta at the ”Festival of Two Worlds” in Charleston, South Carolina, he became NDT’s sole artistic director. Symphony of Psalms (also 1978) was the second significant creation of this time. This work had a decisive influence on any further development of the company, and on its international reputation. In the mid-1980s, Kyliáns work became more abstract, and is best represented by the series of his Black and White choreographies. His encounter with the Australian Aboriginals, which took place at that time, played a decisive role in his understanding of dance, as an important “corner stone” of our social structure, and an inevitable facet of our “artistic horizon.” Kylián marked NDT’s 35th anniversary by creating Arcimboldo (1994) for all three companies of NDT (each one of these companies employs dancers from different age groups). This unique and award winning three-dimensional company structure encompasses all phases of a dancer’s career (between the age of 17 and 70). Kylián stepped down as artistic director of NDT in 1999, and became resident choreographer until December 2009. Venerated for his choreographic work for dancers of all age groups, Kylián has received many honours, including the Nijinsky Award in Monaco, and the Legion d’Honneur of France. In 2008 he was distinguished with one of the highest royal honors, the Medal of the Order of the House of Orange given to him by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix from the Netherlands. In 2006, he co-created a film, CAR-MEN, which was choreographed and filmed in a devastated landscape of a surface coalmine in the Czech Republic.

Author, artist, teacher, coach, artistic director, producer, online media associate, office and project manager, ballet répétiteur - Mr. Houston has pursued many different directions since retiring from the stage, but his most satisfying over the years has been to raise four beautiful children in New York City with his beloved wife, Rita.

S TA G E R S Victoria Simon STAGER FOR SYMPHONY IN C

Victoria Simon was one of the first dancers selected by George Balanchine to re-stage his ballets. Now, as Ballet Mistress for the George Balanchine Trust, she has staged over 25 of the master’s ballets for more than 80 companies on every continent in the world. Her love for the ballets and respect for the choreography are evident in her stagings. With her eye for detail and her emphasis on musicality, she is one of the most sought after and respected re-creators of George Balanchine’s masterpieces. Simon began her study of ballet in New York City at the School of American Ballet prior to becoming an apprentice with the New York City Ballet at age 17. A few months later, she was invited to join the company, where she went on to become a Soloist before taking on the challenging role as Balanchine’s representative around the world.

The Painful Truth Pain is an unbidden guest, humanity’s shadow companion down through the ages. It is a despoiler of dreams and a thief. Chronic pain can appear suddenly in a person’s life, changing it forever. Dr. Lynn R. Webster puts a face on chronic pain through the lives of his patients, and provides an intimate view of what it is like Preprint to live with it. The Painful Truth will open your eyes to the world of those who are stigmatized and marginalized by our society and healthcare system. Yet the new book offers hope and a path forward for those willing to engage in a crusade against the human race’s primal enemy—pain.

“It is not often that you come across a book written by a physician that is filled with more than good advice; it is filled with compassion and understanding for people with pain. From his early childhood, Lynn Webster understood the torment of pain and the importance of just being there and accepting the person in spite of his or her pain. His accounts of his patients are heartfelt, and anyone with pain can relate to the struggles he so perceptively tells.” —Penney Cowan, founder and executive director, American Chronic Pain Association
