From the Artistic Director Welcome to Ballet West’s The Little Mermaid! We are overjoyed to welcome you back to the theater! As we’ve come to appreciate over the past eighteen months, nothing matches the thrill of attending a live performance. While Ballet West has found ways to continue performing through the pandemic, we simply could not bring our audiences the grand scale productions we love to offer. Ballet is an amazing art form that encompasses dance, music, art, athletics, storytelling, as well as theater. It can transport us to another world, and it can take us away from the pressures of our daily lives. How wonderful it is to be able to extend this gift to even our youngest audience members. To move, engage and delight individuals of all ages is the motivation behind Ballet West’s Family Series events. Fine arts can play a critical role in a child’s development, enhanced when families enjoy them together. To inspire our many young audience members, we bring you one of the world’s great fairy-tales, The Little Mermaid in a condensed format that runs just over one hour including an intermission. Although ballet tells it’s own story through dance and pantomime, we have chosen to incorporate narration in Hans Christian Andersen’s timeless tale to add clarity to the action on stage. Recognizing the many Spanish speaking members of our community, we hope that Saturday evening’s Spanish narration reflects the sentiment we share that ballet is for everyone and everyone should feel welcome. Music is an important component of any ballet, and Leo Delibes’ exquisite composition, originally written for another, rarelyperformed 19th Century ballet, Sylvia, seemed the perfect choice. Choreographers Pamela Robinson-Harris and Peggy Dolkas have done a brilliant job bringing out the charm, humor and pathos that this score and the story invoke. Our design team has also created a spectacular world of undersea kingdoms, waves, ships and palaces. Performing this work are the wonderful, up-andcoming artists of Ballet West II and many talented students from all levels of our Ballet West Academy.
Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and most recently Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. 10
From the Artistic Director I hope you agree that the final result is a production filled with humor, sadness and beauty. Ballet West aims to create works that will remain fondly in your family’s memories for many years to come. I hope you find our production of The Little Mermaid to be one of them. Thank you for your patronage,
Adam Sklute Artistic Director Ballet West

From the Executive Director Welcome back to live performances with Ballet West! Though the company has continuously performed and educated using every digital avenue during this pandemic, how wonderful it feels to be back in the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre! Part of our Family Series, this production of The Little Mermaid is especially tailored to young children and new audience members who may feel less familiar with the art form. Using a classic and well-known story that has inspired the beautiful costumes and scenery you’ll see tonight, we hope it will underscore our message that ballet is for everyone, a timeless expression of the human spirit that can be enjoyed by alI. I am proud of our Ballet West family, especially our second company (Ballet West II), Training Division and Academy students for furthering this ideal onstage as well as in classrooms across the state. You will notice the many young dancers in this performance. Their skill level and professionalism reflect the ways in which our Frederick Quinney Lawson Academy has expanded and grown exponentially over the years, attracting students from nearly every state in the country and even many international students. Academy satellite locations can now be found in Lehi and Park City, and we are thrilled to announce a new location for our Summit County campus under the direction of Ballet West First Soloist Allison DeBona as Principal. Summit County is a hub for the arts, and we’re honored to help continue its growth by bringing Ballet West training to children and adults alike. Students of the Academy have access to renowned faculty and distinguished guest teachers, the opportunity to train alongside professional dancers from the main Company and enjoy the benefits of being associated with and performing alongside a dance organization that is recognized around the globe. During this pandemic, many arts organizations faced an uncertain future. However, our community made it clear that Ballet West is integral to Utah’s quality of life, to its fabric and to its future. We thank the many individuals, foundations, corporations, government officials, employees and volunteers who helped ensure that this company remained for future generations to enjoy. To that end, we roll out this exciting rendition of The Little Mermaid. Sincerely,
Michael Scolamiero Executive Director Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

THE LITTLE MERMAID 21-22 SEASON

Narrator: Far out in the ocean – where the water is as blue as the prettiest cornflower, as clear as crystal and very, very deep – there dwell the Sea King and all of his subjects. Narrator: Now, the Sea King had 6 beautiful daughters. The youngest was the prettiest of them all; her skin as clear and delicate as a rose petal and her voice as angelic as the sweetest songbird – but just like her sisters, she had no legs and her body ended in a fish’s tail. Abuela: “Cuando tiengas 15 años.” Grandmother: “When you have reached your 15th year”, Narrador: Dijo la abuela de la Sirenita. Narrator: Said the Little Mermaid’s Grandmother. Grandmother: “You will have permission to rise up out of the sea – to sit on the rocks in the moonlight, while great ships go sailing by – then…you will see the world and all who live in it. Narrator: None of the sisters longed so much for her turn to swim up to the surface of the ocean as much as the Little Mermaid – she who had the longest to wait and who was so quiet and thoughtful. Narrator: When the sisters rose up through the water, arm-in-arm; the Little Mermaid would stand quite alone, looking after them, ready to cry – only that mermaids have no tears. La Sirenita a los 10: “Si solo tuviera quince años” Little M @ 10: “Oh, if I were only fifteen years old,”
18
Narration Narrador: Dijo la Sirenita. Narrator: Said the Little Mermaid. Little M @ 10: “I just know that I would love the world up there and all who live in it.” Little M @ 10: “Do human beings live forever?” Narrador: La Sirenita preguntó a su abuela. Narrator: Asked the Little Mermaid to her grandmother. Little M @ 10: “Do they never die as we do here in the sea?” Grandmother: “Yes”, they must also die and their life is even shorter than ours. We sometimes live for 300 years; but when we cease to exist, we become the foam on the crests of the waves. Human beings, on the contrary have a soul which lives on forever. It rises up through the clear pure air beyond the glittering stars.” Narrator: The Little Mermaid had a statue of a prince and often she would daydream that one day he would fall in love with her. Little M @ 10: “Is there anything I can do to win an immortal soul – like human beings on land?” Abuela: “No,” Grandmother: “No,” Narrador: Su abuela respondió. Narrator: Replied her Grandmother. “ THE LITTLE MERMAID 21-22 SEASON
19
Narration Grandmother:“Not unless a man were to love you so much – that you meant more to him than anything in the world. Only then – would his soul become one with your body. Only then – could you obtain an immortal soul. But this can never happen….” La Sirenita a los 10: “Por qué, Abuela?” Little M @ 10: “Why, Grandmother?” Grandmother: “Because human beings have two legs – and you my dear – have a fish’s tail.” Narrador: Por fin, la Sirenita cumplió 15 años. Narrator: At last the Little Mermaid reached her 15th year. Sea King: “Well, now that you are all grown up,” Narrador: Dijo su padre. Narrator: Said her father. Sea King: “Allow me to adorn you like your sisters.” Narrator: And – he placed a wreath of white lilies in her hair. Narrator: Said her father, and away she rose as lightly as a bubble to the surface of the water.
Narrator: The sun was just beginning to set as she raised her head above the waves. The clouds were tinted with crimson and gold and through the glimmering twilight beamed the evening star in all its beauty. The sea was calm, the air was mild and fresh and the Little Mermaid relaxed on a large rock to watch the sea foam dance among the waves. Along came a sailing vessel and aboard it was a handsome prince. It was becoming late, yet the Little Mermaid could not take her eyes off the ship or the beautiful prince. The sea became restless – rain clouds darkened the sky and lightning appeared in the distance. A dreadful storm was approaching – the waves rose mountains high – the ship dove like a swan between them and then rose again on their lofty foamy crests. The Little Mermaid saw the Prince sink deep into the waves and he would have died had she not come to his assistance. She held his head above the water and let the waves take them safely ashore. Narrator: In the morning the storm had ceased – but of the Prince’s ship not a fragment could be seen. The Little Mermaid placed the Prince by a large rock, which she hid behind. She did not wait long before she saw a young maiden and her companions approach the spot where he lay. When the young maiden and her friends went to fetch help, the Little Mermaid came out from behind the rock. She kissed the Prince’s forehead and stroked back his wet hair – he seemed so much like the marble statue that she had back in her father’s castle. She kissed him again and wished that he might live. Little M @ 15: “I will give up everything for him,” Narrador: Dijo la Sirenita. Narrator: Said the Little Mermaid. Little M @ 15: “He on whom all my wishes depend – and in whose hands I should like to place the happiness of my life. I will go to the sea witch, of whom I have always been so afraid – but she can give me counsel and help.” THE LITTLE MERMAID 21-22 SEASON
21
Narrator: The Little Mermaid swam farther and farther away – and she watched as the young Maiden returned with help for the prince. She saw the Prince come to life and smile upon those who stood around him. But to the Little Mermaid, he sent no smile – he would never know that it was she who had saved him. This made her very sad so she dove sorrowfully down into the deep sea – making her way to the Witch’s Lair. Sea Witch: “I know what you want,” Narrador: Dijo la bruja del mar a la Sirenita. Narrator: Said the Sea Witch to the Little Mermaid. Sea Witch: “It is very stupid of you but you shall have your way – and in the end it will bring you great sorrow. You wish to get rid of your fish’s tail and to have two legs like human beings – so that the young prince may fall in love with you – so that you may gain an immortal soul. Well, I will prepare a potion for you. Tomorrow before sunrise you must swim up to land, lay down on the shore and drink it. Your tail will then disappear and shrink up into what human beings call legs. But think, for once your shape has become like a human being, you can no longer be a mermaid. And – if you do not win the love of the prince – the first morning after he marries another – your heart will break and you will forever become foam on the crest of the waves.” La Sirenita a los 15: Lo haré!” Little M @ 15: “I will do it!” Narrador: Dijo la Sirenita emocionada. Narrator: Said the Little Mermaid eagerly. “ 22
Narration Sea Witch: “But! I must also be paid – and it is not a trifle that I ask. You have the sweetest voice of any who dwell in the sea and you believe that you can charm the prince with it. But this voice you must give to me – the best thing you possess will be mine for the price of my potion.” La Sirenita a los 15: “Lo será!” Little M @ 15: “It shall be!” Narrator: Replied the Little Mermaid. Then the witch placed her left hand on the Little Mermaid’s throat and pulled her voice from it – and with her right hand she gave the mermaid the magic potion. Narrator: Quickly the Little Mermaid swam to the surface of the water and laid on the shore. As the sun rose she drank the potion – and then she became aware that her fish’s tail was gone and in its place were the prettiest pair of legs any young maiden could have. Narrator: The Prince asked her who she was and she looked at him sorrowfully with her deep blue eyes – but she could not speak. As the days passed, she loved the Prince more fondly – and he loved her – as one might love his little sister – but it never occurred to him to make her his wife. Suddenly there sounded a flourish of trumpets! Very soon it was said that the Prince must marry – and that the beautiful daughter of a neighboring king would be his wife. At last the Princess arrived and the Little Mermaid was obliged to acknowledge that she had never seen a more perfect vision of beauty. Her skin was delicately fair and beneath her long dark eye-lashes shone her laughing blue eyes. Prince: “It was you who saved my life when I lay dead on the beach.”

Narration Narrador: Dijo el Príncipe a la Princesa. Narrator: Said the Prince to the Princess. Principe: “Estoy tan feliz! Mi sueño se hizo realidad!” Prince: “Oh I am too happy! My fondest hopes are fulfilled!” Narrator: The Little Mermaid sighed and felt as if her heart were already broken. The Prince’s wedding would bring death to her – and she would change into the foam of the sea. As the wedding celebrations began to unfold the Little Mermaid felt a sharp pang pierce through her heart. She knew this was the last time she would ever see the Prince and breathe the same air with him. She had forsaken all for him – her kindred, her home, her beautiful voice – while he knew nothing of it. An eternal night, without a thought or a dream awaited her. She had no soul and now she could never win one. Narrator: The Little Mermaid fled the castle and ran to the place where she had once saved the Prince. Narrator: She saw her sisters rising out of the water but their long beautiful hair waved no more. Sisters: “We have given our hair to the Sea Witch to obtain help for you that you may not die tonight. She has given us a knife. Here it is; see it is very sharp. Before the sun rises you must plunge it into the heart of the Prince. As the warm blood spills upon your feet, they will grow together again forming a fish’s tail and you will once again become a mermaid. Haste then! Here he comes with his new bride. Either HE or YOU must die before sunrise! Please come back to us!”
24
Pero en cambio ella comenzó a levantarse del agua, flotando más alto y más alto, y ella escuchó una voz que decía: Narrator: Quickly, the mermaid hid so as not to be seen by the Prince and his bride, as they enjoyed the sunrise over the sea. In a short time, weary from the wedding celebrations, they fell asleep. The Little Mermaid came out of her hiding place and beheld the fair bride with her head resting on the Prince’s shoulder. She glanced at the sharp knife and again at the Prince. But she could not do what her sisters had asked of her. The knife trembled in her hand so she flung it as far as she could into the waves. Casting one more glance at the Prince, she threw herself into the sea thinking her body would dissolve into foam. But, instead she began to rise up out of the water, floating higher and higher—and she heard a voice say: Abuela: “Pobre Sirenita, has intentado con todo tu corazón hacer lo que estamos haciendo. Grandmother: “You poor Little Mermaid, have tried with your whole heart to do as we are doing. You have suffered and endured and raised yourself up to the spirit world by your good deeds. Thus, now may you obtain an immortal soul.” Narrator: And with a calmness of heart the Little Mermaid lifted her eyes towards the sun and for the very first time felt them filling with tears.
