About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, and Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. Ballet West has toured the world several times over, presenting the very best in American classical ballet.
willam christensen
Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City in 1963. Willam F. Christensen was the company’s first artistic director, co-founding the company together with Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen had established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah, and with the tireless assistance of Mrs. Enid Cosgriff, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. But this was not the first ballet company Willam Christensen founded. Along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. There, he went on to create the first full-length American productions of Coppélia, Swan Lake, and his evergreen production of The Nutcracker, which remains in Ballet West’s repertoire to this day. With 38 company members, 16 second company members, and a thriving academy that trains dancers of all ages, many of whom have gone on to professional careers with Ballet West and companies around the world, Ballet West ranks among the top professional ballet companies in America. Since its inception, the Company has had five artistic directors—its founder Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart, Jonas Kage, and currently Adam Sklute, each of whom has helped to build Ballet West’s unique and expansive profile. For more than 50 years, Willam Christensen and Ballet West have developed and influenced innumerable great artists in the ballet world. Some notable figures include Bart Cook, Finis Jhung, Jay Jolley, Victoria Morgan, Tomm Ruud, Michael Smuin, Richard Tanner, and Kent Stowell. With an eclectic and ever expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in the world of dance.

From the Artistic Director Welcome to Ballet West’s production of The Nutcracker generously brought to you by KSL-TV through the magic of BYUtv and Kaleidoscope Pictures. Ballet West is blessed to have the first full-length version of The Nutcracker in America. Choreographed by our founder Willam Christensen in 1944 when he was the Artistic Director of The San Francisco Ballet. “Mr. C” moved back to Utah in the early 1950s and he brought his production with him. Since then, and until this year, Ballet West has had a solid unbroken run of Mr. C’s The Nutcracker. At first, we were determined not to break our live run of this beloved Utah tradition, and we worked hard to create a modified version to give our artists, our musicians, our crew, and hundreds of children a chance to perform. We planned on calling it “After Christensen” and my amazing artistic staff retooled the production to incorporate proper social distancing and all the guidelines needed to produce a safe and healthy live theater experience for everyone while staying true to Mr. C’s vision. However, ultimately, live performances, this year became impossible. All of us at Ballet West, however, remained committed to bringing our public and the world, the joys of our uniquely American production of The Nutcracker and again we were blessed with this spectacular filming. Last season, 2019, was the 75th Anniversary of the premiere of Mr. C’s iconic ballet. To celebrate, we partnered with BYUtv who commissioned Kaleidoscope Pictures to film and edit the ballet for television. The result, this glorious film version, is so vibrant and full of life it is almost as if we are experiencing it live. The process of producing this film was quite an endeavor. Based on time, theater availability, and funding we actually did not film it during the December theater run but rather, we couldn’t get started until February – right smack in the middle of performing our huge production of Swan Lake. While rehearsing and performing Swan Lake our artists needed to keep prepared for their roles in The Nutcracker as well. All the children in the cast had to come back and prepare for the filming. Our orchestra had to maintain their work in two different massive Tchaikovsky scores, and hundreds of costumes had to be kept in tip top shape. Phenomenally, and with 17
From the Artistic Director hard work, our amazing crew took down the immense Swan Lake sets and put up the huge Nutcracker ones in two days while simultaneously redoing all the lighting plots. The Swan Lake production had to be stored in huge trucks right outside the Capitol Theater where we filmed. The brilliant Kaleidoscope team moved in with all their film rigging and cameras, and for two short days we shot the actual full performance twice and spent a whole day working on close-ups and special angles. Then, like the wind, everything came down in another two days and Swan Lake was put back up to present five more performances of that great classic ballet love tragedy. Then our team spent much of the summer and fall working closely with Kaleidoscope to properly edit all the film and music together. The result – this stupendous recording of Willam Christensen’s historic ballet. This has been such a complicated year for everyone, and performing arts groups are struggling to stay afloat during this difficult time. While we at Ballet West still have many challenges to surmount as we work to continue to bring you great art, we are grateful to have been given a gift of this elegant and highly produced filming. We are grateful to be given a platform to be able to share it with you, and we are grateful for each and every one of you – our beloved patrons. We hope that next year we can all come together in the theater to share the magic of Mr. C’s Nutcracker in person. There is nothing like a live theater experience, sharing the energy of over fifty musicians playing live, with nearly one hundred adult and child performers using the language of classical ballet to tell stories and create beauty. Until we can gather as a community again, we hope you and your family enjoy gathering to watch this glorious presentation of Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker. From all of us at Ballet West, we miss you, but know we will be together soon. Blessings to each and every one of you for a wonderful holiday season.
Adam Sklute Artistic Director Ballet West
Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and most recently Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives.

From the Executive Director Ballet West is proud to present this very unique and special presentation of The Nutcracker! In November, when the Company realized The Nutcracker would not continue its unrivaled place as the longest running production of this ballet in the United States--we were disappointed, to say the least. The Nutcracker is loved around the world, but Utahns know Ballet West’s version is special, as it is the very first full-length production staged in the United States by our founder, Mr. Willam Christensen. Recognizing the need to continue this holiday tradition, Ballet West quickly approached KSL-TV to air our iconic production and KSL enthusiastically agreed to air not one, but three primetime airings, commercial free and without charge to Ballet West. A total of four and half hours as a service to the community and to help Ballet West continues to leave me in awe! The irony is that for the first time in 65 years it seemed inevitable that no one would enjoy America’s first The Nutcracker, the most popular of all ballets. However, the reality is it will be more accessible to our community than ever. Indeed, thanks to KSL-TV’s downloadable app, it will be available to the world, free of charge! While this opportunity is very exciting, there is a stark reality for Ballet West. A large portion of our revenue for the entire year is derived from ticket sales of The Nutcracker. To ensure the future of this beloved and storied institution, we have launched a fundraising campaign to ensure a bright future for Ballet West. In hard times, this community has stepped up to support its arts organizations, and we are asking for your help now. Please go to www.balletwest. org and make a donation, large or small. Your contribution means so much to our artists, crew, musicians, and staff.

From the Executive Director For nearly 60 years Ballet West has entertained and educated Utah. Please ensure this community jewel continues its mission for many years to come. Warmest wishes to you and yours this holiday season. Sincerely,
Michael Scolamiero Executive Director
Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

THE NUTCRACKER 20–21 SEASON

THE STORY THE NUTCRACKER begins at the Stahlbaum home on Christmas Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their children, Clara and Fritz, are busy preparing for the evening festivities. The guests arrive, including Clara’s Godfather, Dr. Drosselmeyer. Dr. Drosselmeyer has fashioned a special gift for Clara, a Nutcracker designed in the form of a small soldier. Clara falls in love with her Nutcracker at once. That night, Clara is unable to sleep without one more look at her beloved Nutcracker. She tiptoes back into the living room and cradles it once more before falling asleep. She is not sure if she is dreaming or not, but before her eyes are huge mice playing in front of the Christmas tree that has grown to a tremendous size. The Nutcracker fights with the Mouse King and, in the heat of the battle, Clara takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse King. While he is distracted, the Nutcracker stabs him with his saber. After the battle, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a handsome prince and, grateful to Clara for saving his life, invites her to accompany him on a journey to the fabled Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. En route, they pass through the exquisite land of the Snow Queen and King. Act II begins in the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, where Clara is entertained by an array of divertissements, including Spanish, Arabian, and Chinese dancers, as well as Mother Buffoon, with her many children who appear from under her gigantic skirt. The evening concludes with the grand pas de deux performed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Following the pas de deux, Clara is whisked away with her prince in a sleigh, while waving goodbye to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her magical kingdom.

Profiles Willam F. Christensen
Choreographer, The Nutcracker
Recognized as one of the leading pioneers in American dance, Willam Christensen, known affectionately as “Mr. C,” played a key role in the artistic contributions to Utah and to the United States. Along with brothers Lew and Harold, Willam began his career with dance lessons from his uncle at the Christensen Academy in Brigham City, Utah. Together the brothers went on to a professional career in vaudeville, and then in 1937, established the oldest ballet company in the United States, the San Francisco Ballet. While with the San Francisco Ballet, Mr. C choreographed the first fulllength version of The Nutcracker ever performed in the United States. Christensen moved his family to Utah to nurse his wife’s ill health. In 1951, he founded the first ballet department at an American university, the University of Utah. Shortly thereafter, in 1953, he formed the University Ballet Theatre, the first ballet company ever incorporated into a university. Mr. C’s contributions to dance also include producing the first full-length version of Coppélia ever to be mounted by an American choreographer and producing the first full-length Swan Lake in the United States. In addition, Mr. C produced the first American Cinderella and his version of Stravinsky’s The Firebird. In 1963, Willam Christensen, in conjuction with Glenn Walker Wallace, founded Ballet West under the name Utah Civic Ballet. Willam served as Artistic Director for Ballet West, and, both under and following his direction, Ballet West has grown to become one of America’s leading ballet companies. After retiring as Artistic Director in 1978, Mr. C founded the Christensen Academy and continued teaching well into his 90’s. He served as special artistic advisor for Ballet West’s annual performances of The Nutcracker up until his death on October 14, 2001. Reporting on his death at the age of 99, the San Francisco Chronicle called him “the grandfather of American ballet.”

Profiles Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Composer, The Nutcracker
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) studied at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg, where George Balanchine later studied piano in addition to his studies in dance. Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular and influential of all romantic composers. His work is expressive, melodic, and grand in scale, with rich orchestrations. His output was prodigious and included chamber works, symphonies, and concerti for various instruments, as well as operas and works for the piano. His creations for ballet, composed in close partnership with Marius Petipa, include Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and The Sleeping Beauty.
